Emotional Labor In Front-Facing Jobs In University Settings, Khushboo Jain Dec 2023

Emotional Labor In Front-Facing Jobs In University Settings, Khushboo Jain

Student Theses and Dissertations

This research aims to investigate how employees in front-facing/public-oriented positions engage in and experience the effects of emotional labor. Emotional labor is the unpaid, frequently unseen work a person must perform to manage their emotions for other people (Resnick, 2021). This kind of labor can manifest in multiple settings such as the workplace and interpersonal relationships. Emotional labor is often a problem in organizations because there is more focus on how the employee is representing them in customer interactions than the employee’s well-being. During face-to-face or voice-to-voice interactions with customers, employees are required to express proper emotions as a job …

Tiny Machine Learning For Underwater Image Enhancement: Pruning And Quantizaition Approach, Dr Khaled Nagaty, The British University In Egypt, Andreas Pester Dr

Computer Science

Many people have expressed an interest in underwater image processing in a variety of fields, including underwater vehicle control, archaeology, marine biological studies, etc. Underwater exploration is becoming an increasingly important element of our lives, with applications ranging from underwater marine and creature research to pipeline and communication logistics, military use, touristic and entertainment use. Underwater images suffer from poor visibility, distortion, and poor quality for a variety of causes, including light propagation. The major issue arises when these images must be captured at depths greater than 500 feet and artificial lighting needs to be provided. Efficient algorithms and models …

Alnus Viridis Ssp. Fruticosa Modulates Local Conditions To Influence Intra And Interspecies Growth, Jackson W. Drew Dec 2023

Alnus Viridis Ssp. Fruticosa Modulates Local Conditions To Influence Intra And Interspecies Growth, Jackson W. Drew

Biological Sciences

The Arctic is warming rapidly due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Concurrent with warming, some Arctic plant communities have transformed from short statured evergreen and graminoid shrub tundra to tall deciduous shrubs in recent decades. As warming continues, plant-plant interactions will likely change and influence future community composition. Alnus viridis ssp. fruticosa (Siberian alder) is rapidly expanding across Arctic regions and is particularly important because Siberian alder is the Arctic's only large N-fixing shrub, may alter N-cycling to further influence both C-cycling and community composition as it spreads. This dissertation addressed two main questions to better understand how Arctic deciduous …

Microplastics In Spotted Seal Stomachs From The Bering And Chukchi Seas In 2012 And 2020, Alexandria Sletten Dec 2023

Microplastics In Spotted Seal Stomachs From The Bering And Chukchi Seas In 2012 And 2020, Alexandria Sletten

Biological Sciences

Microplastics pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems across multiple trophic levels. Spotted seals (Phoca largha) are piscivorous and occupy one of the higher trophic positions in the Bering and Chukchi seas, putting them at risk of ingesting microplastics through prey. This project aimed to determine if microplastics are present in the stomachs of spotted seals harvested for subsistence purposes and compare their presence spatially between two harvest locations, Gambell and Shishmaref, AK. Microplastics are predicted to increase in the Arctic over time due to climate warming and subsequent deposition of microplastics from melting sea ice. Therefore, we examined stomachs …

Avian Divergence And Speciation Across Beringia Examined Using Comparative Mitogenomics, K. A. Collier Dec 2023

Avian Divergence And Speciation Across Beringia Examined Using Comparative Mitogenomics, K. A. Collier

Biological Sciences

Accurate knowledge of divergence and speciation processes is critical for understanding key aspects of biodiversity. As a well-known, speciose group of vertebrates, an increased understanding of how birds diverge and speciate allows us to better manage extant avian diversity and understand how it develops over time. Additionally, birds often exhibit complex and variable patterns of divergence, resulting in complexes of taxonomic uncertainty. Filling gaps in our knowledge of divergence across time and space increases our ability to correctly identify and understand not just avian diversity but clade-level patterns in speciation processes. These higher-order findings give us tools to compare and …

Smoke Without Fire: Wildfire Smoke Affects Phenolic Composition Of Wild Blueberry Fruits (Vaccinium Uliginosum), Laura G. Weingartner Dec 2023

Smoke Without Fire: Wildfire Smoke Affects Phenolic Composition Of Wild Blueberry Fruits (Vaccinium Uliginosum), Laura G. Weingartner

Biological Sciences

Wildfire smoke can induce changes in plant growth, phenology, and chemical composition. The frequency and intensity of wildfires have increased over the last thirty years in Alaska, and smoke has the potential to affect important wild fruit plants, such as bog blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum L.), a food source for many Alaskans and wild animals. We exposed bog blueberry plants to wood smoke at different stages in fruit development: early-season when the plants were flowering ("early-smoked"), mid-season when fruits were unripe ("mid-smoked"), and late-season when fruits were fully ripe ("late-smoked"). We measured anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and total phenolics in the ripe fruits, …

Model-Based Estimation Of Juvenile Salmon Spatial Ecology In The Eastern Bering Sea, Alaska, Lilian Hart Dec 2023

Model-Based Estimation Of Juvenile Salmon Spatial Ecology In The Eastern Bering Sea, Alaska, Lilian Hart

Fisheries

Quantitative descriptions of juvenile salmon spatial ecology during the marine phase of their lifecycle are needed to help direct conservation efforts and uncover latent relationships between juvenile salmon and their environment. The NOAA Fisheries Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) program contributes to the conservation of species in the marine waters off of the coast of Alaska by identifying areas of particular importance to reproduction and growth. Salmon EFH definitions have not yet been updated using the species distribution modeling approach taken most recently in defining Alaska groundfish and crab EFH. Current EFH definitions for Alaskan salmon are geographically broad, do not …

Eavesdropping On Killer Whales: Distribution, Calling Rates, And Acoustic Abundance Of Fish-Eating And Mammal-Eating Killer Whales In The Gulf Of Alaska, Hannah J. Myers Dec 2023

Eavesdropping On Killer Whales: Distribution, Calling Rates, And Acoustic Abundance Of Fish-Eating And Mammal-Eating Killer Whales In The Gulf Of Alaska, Hannah J. Myers

Marine Biology

The widespread loss of apex consumers in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems throughout the world has precipitated profound trophic cascades and switches to different ecological states. However, conserving top predators can deliver broad biodiversity benefits and improve ecosystem resiliency. Effective conservation and management policy is predicated on a species' distribution and abundance in a given area and time. In this dissertation, I provide new insight into killer whale (Orcinus orca) distribution, vocal behavior, and abundance in the Gulf of Alaska using passive acoustic monitoring and advance long-term monitoring capacity for this species. First, I describe the year-round spatiotemporal distribution and …

Volcanic Gas Quantification Under Suboptimal Conditions, D. Skye Kushner Dec 2023

Volcanic Gas Quantification Under Suboptimal Conditions, D. Skye Kushner

Geosciences

Volcanic gas emissions are challenging to quantify. Achieving high confidence in gas composition, column concentrations, and emission rates acquired using remote sensing techniques is thought to require optimal atmospheric conditions. These conditions are often not met, creating a reluctance to preform measurements under non-ideal atmospheric conditions with inherent uncertainty about how useful those measurements may be. In the case of volcanic eruptions, the hazardous nature of the volcanic plume creates an environment where it is often not safe to collect measurements. This dissertation presents three projects which aim to constrain the quantity of two specific volcanic gases, mercury (Hg) and …

Making Space For Adolescents Of Refugee Background In Public Libraries, Danielle S. Dejonge Dec 2023

Making Space For Adolescents Of Refugee Background In Public Libraries, Danielle S. Dejonge

Masters Projects

Refugee adolescents go through multiple transitions that affect identity while settling in their new country of relocation. The ability to recognize the complexity of identity in a healthy way is fostered by safe spaces of belonging that encourage agency. Libraries, as spaces already effectively serving diverse populations including refugee youth, have the resources to be a safe space for these adolescents. One resource that has been trending in libraries is a makerspace. Makerspaces offer multimodal activities, whether they be arts-based or STEM-based, that not only encourage critical thought, but also allow for development of belonging and agency for healthy dynamic …

The Effect Of Cold Exposure And Activity On Skeletal Muscle Physiology: A Study Of Human And Animal Models, Michelle M. Johannsen Dec 2023

The Effect Of Cold Exposure And Activity On Skeletal Muscle Physiology: A Study Of Human And Animal Models, Michelle M. Johannsen

Biological Sciences

Environmental factors and physical activity have the potential to modulate skeletal muscle physiology in beneficial ways. Cold exposure and endurance exercise, specifically, may improve aerobic capacity and atrophy resistance. I utilized three models to examine the effect of cold exposure and activity level on skeletal muscle physiology: quantitation of body composition and energy expenditure estimates in humans participating in a transmountain race, comparative proteomic analysis of skeletal muscle in hibernating and summer active American black bears (Ursus americanus), and an experimental study of the combined effects of cold exposure and endurance training on white adipose tissue, and gastrocnemius and soleus …

Effects Of Desformylflustrabromine On Compulsive-Like And Social Behaviors In Mouse Models Of Ocd And Autism, Isaac Van Flein

Biological Sciences

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) share a number of similar deficits, including altered cholinergic activity in the central nervous system (CNS), manifestation of repetitive, restricted, and compulsive-like patterns of behavior, and frequent co-morbid presentation. Desformylflustrabromine is a novel positive allosteric modulator of α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which has recently been shown to be able to reduce compulsive-like behavior in a non-induced mouse model of OCD. In this study, I attempted to replicate the compulsive-like behavior-reducing effects of desformylflustrabromine in the mouse model of OCD, as well as expose the model to a novel assessment; social behavior, as …

Collegiate Sport Chaplaincy: Problems And Promise, Steven Waller, Lars Dzikus, Robin Hardin

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Sport chaplaincy has been evolving since the latter half of the twentieth century, and many professional teams and professional organizations utilize the services of chaplains. Several licensing and credentialing organizations do train chaplains, counselors and mentors, but they are not necessarily aimed at sport chaplains. Chaplains have become more prominent in collegiate athletics as well and as such several training programs have developed for collegiate sport chaplains. Collegiate institutions, parachurch organizations and nonprofit faith-based organizations offer the programs that do exist. However, in collegiate athletics there is no governing body that oversees the training requirements or qualifications of chaplains. This …

To understand well-being from an American Indian perspective, I used an indigenous model, Secatero’s (2009) four Well-Being Concepts, which include physical, social, mental, and spiritual aspects, as the conceptual framework for my study. The participants in my study described well-being as identity, beliefs, values, relationships, perseverance, and financial stability. They were developing a sense of well-being as …

Stable Complexity: Verbal Inflection In Prominent And Frequent Environments, Lukas Denk Dec 2023

Stable Complexity: Verbal Inflection In Prominent And Frequent Environments, Lukas Denk

Linguistics ETDs

Despite presenting challenges for speakers, complex linguistic features such as lexically conditioned inflection (LCI) persist across different languages. LCI forms part of not entirely predictable paradigms which require lexeme-specific knowledge to master. Moreover, LCI remains one of the oldest morphological phenomena in certain languages. Previous research has linked the persistence of such complexity to language-external factors like geographic and social circumstances of speech communities.

This dissertation delves into the question whether language-internal properties are associated with the distribution of inflectional complexity. LCI is compared with other inflectional paradigms across 41 genetically and geographically distant languages. The study shows that LCI …

The Generational Journey Of Racial Reconciliation: A Call For Tender Hearts And Continuing Conversation Through A Servant-First Life Of Leadership, Michael T. Von Behren Dec 2023

The Generational Journey Of Racial Reconciliation: A Call For Tender Hearts And Continuing Conversation Through A Servant-First Life Of Leadership, Michael T. Von Behren

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the polarized context of today’s society ideological differences on how to address issues of race funnel the angst from riot-stricken streets into school board meetings, sour social media posts, and cancel both careers and friendships. This article examines the critical critique of what has been called third wave anti-racism contrasting this critique with foundational tenants of critical race theory. Servant-leadership is presented as a preferred alternative leading to continuing conversation with tender hearts, which choose to remember the abuses of the past while seeking renewed reconciliation for the sake of future generations.

Self-Transcendence: Servant-Leadership And The Doorway Of Life, Ryan Schmidt Dec 2023

Self-Transcendence: Servant-Leadership And The Doorway Of Life, Ryan Schmidt

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert Greenleaf speaks of his relationship to Robert Frost’s poem Directive as a symbol in understanding servant-leadership, offering meaning for others in their reconciliation of who and where they are on life’s inward journey. Reflecting on my personal journey, in searching for a higher purpose and identifying what needs changing, a closer examination into the learnings inspired by my family is exposing the limitations in my predisposed self-orientation approach to leadership and challenging my relationship to a life of meaning. My inward desire to become a better person is opening my heart towards an other-orientation approach to serving, and towards …

Sections of the paper include an overview …

Self-Forgiveness, Servant-Leadership, And Religious Volunteers In A Juvenile Incarceration Setting, Terri Jane Stewart Dec 2023

Self-Forgiveness, Servant-Leadership, And Religious Volunteers In A Juvenile Incarceration Setting, Terri Jane Stewart

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Engaging volunteers with religious backgrounds in a juvenile incarceration setting leads to encountering white saviorism (Raypole, 2021, para. 4) and white evangelicalism as expressed through the theology of these volunteers and their racial demographic. Additionally, white evangelicalism used the language and values of Christian nationalism (Boston, 2021). Servant-leadership is an antidote to white Christian nationalism and can balance the inequalities of relationships between volunteer and incarcerated youth. Specifically, self-forgiveness as a practice of servant-leadership and of incarcerated youth can lead to healing from white Christian nationalism and healing from a criminal background.

Servant-Leadership In The Military: An Investigation Of Servant-Leadership Among Technical Sergeants In The United States Air Force, Tracey M. Richardson, Matthew P. Earnhardt, Tori Morris, Steven M. Walker

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-Leadership, developed by Greenleaf (1970), is a leadership theory which prioritizes the follower. Greenleaf contended that putting others first as leaders could lead to a change in society. Patterson (2003) developed a model from Greenleaf’s theory which identified several attributes of the Servant-Leadership model including agapao love, humility, altruism, vision, trust, empowerment, and service. In the military, researchers have used Patterson’s construct to conclude that Servant-Leadership does exist in the military. Though some research involving Servant-Leadership and the military has been conducted, there is a dearth in the literature. In the United States Air Force, leadership development for Non-Commissioned Officers …
