Planet-Oriented Design: A Proposal For New Ethical Transitions In Design Education, Martin Tironi, Marcos Chilet
IASDR Conference Series
We live through a socio-environmental, socio-political and socio-technical crisis that forces us to ask ourselves urgent questions about our planet. The article explores the need to transition from human-centred design to forms of design with a terrestrial vision. Based on the experience of the School of Design of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, it explores the potential of Planet-Oriented design as an articulator of new practices and a new ethic of teaching and doing design. The recent social phenomena - such as the Chilean social uprising of 2019 - added to the planetary crises in which we live opened …

Expanding The Boundaries Of Service Design To Assist Re-Design The Short-Term Strategy For Sustainable Development, Tong Liu, Cai Jun
IASDR Conference Series
Service design (SD) has been used into variety of projects such as policy making and marketing innovation. In this work, we present SD as a sustainable strategy to assist decision making within organization requiring that designers and staffs are co-working. Incorporating a perspective focused on how the user’s need is understood by increasing satisfaction to improve the quality of service process, will help team to better understand how SD can be a holistic tool to re-design the brand image. Methodologies derived from design method are discussed through a case study demonstrates the progressive actions of transforming design insights to practical …

Designer's position and authority have long been challenged. However, “Design” has only recently stated responsibility for its direct impact on social structures (Escobar, 2017; Fry, 1999; Maze, 2019). Among many new “Designs”, there is an emerging decolonizing design movement in which members pursue ontological change rather than additive diversifying measures that would only uphold and sustain colonial institutions and systems. This paper focuses on design critiques related to Design’s ability to perpetuate coloniality. Starting from our lived experiences, we expand on how Design alienates different worldviews by promoting, appropriating, and erasing the subaltern population. Following that, we present our methodological …

In a wide range of networked societies, going digital is a dynamic social phenomenon that brings risks exposure to unsafe media. This article studied the knowledge of issues related to unsafe media through demographic and social perspectives. It aims to understand the digital lifestyle and ways to mitigate the risk of unsafe media for women in the digital world. This quantitative research-based study collected data from 541 questionnaires completed by female digital denizens, and the data were analyzed using statistical methods.
In the context of unsafe media, the research found that population of women in the digital world can divided …

Objectives
Little is known about how physical contact at birth and early caregiving environments influence the colonization of the infant gastrointestinal microbiome. We investigated how infant contact with caregivers at birth and within the first 2 weeks of life relates to the composition of the gastrointestinal microbiome in a sample of U.S. infants (n = 60).
Methods
Skin-to-skin and physical contact with caregivers at birth and early caregiving environments were surveyed at 2 weeks postpartum. Stool samples were collected from infants at 2 weeks, 2, 6, and 12 months of age and underwent 16S rRNA sequencing as a proxy …

Annual Student Research Poster Session
The Trasimeno Regional Archaeological Project (TRAP) is a long-term regional archaeological project focused on the exploration of the Castiglione del Lago territory on the West Side of Lago Trasimeno. The 2023 season involved the excavation of a new site, dubbed the Belvedere site, situated within the town of Castiglione del Lago, Italy, an area of interest due to a visible Roman structure protruding from the earth. With the unique opportunity of working with this new site and the innovations in archaeology that have developed in recent years, this summer’s research focused on the production of digital 3D and 360º content …

Reshaping Global Supply Chain: The Us-China Trade War, China’S Zero Covid Policy, And Vietnam’S Trade Boom, Karan Mahato, Guangjun Qu
Annual Student Research Poster Session
The escalating tensions between the United States and China, together with the stringent Zero Covid policy enforced by the Chinese government, have been actively reshaping global supply chains in the past several years. Our project is positioned to examine these two effects on Vietnam's trade engagement. To facilitate our investigation, we compiled export and import data of Vietnam's top 20 trading partners, spanning monthly and yearly intervals. We then explore potential correlations between the US-China trade war, China's lockdown policy, and the trade surge witnessed in Vietnam. Our empirical findings indicate: [a] Both the US-China trade war and China's Zero …

The visual performance of Al- Sayyida Nafisa Mosque Square in Cairo is analyzed in this paper. The aim of the present study is to derive a proposed evaluation model that service as a tool for evaluating the visual performance of religious urban open spaces. The research also tries to reach the best visual basics and criteria which support the design and planning process that must be taken in consideration when dealing with the religious urban open spaces. Research results showed that legibility, identity, determinants, aesthetics consistency, sense of nature, and supplements of urban open space help in enhancing the visual …

Grounding History Instruction: Engaging Place And Scale Through Iterative Local Inquiry Design, Megan Vangorder
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Teaching local history is often an afterthought in the high school history classroom. It is difficult to find enough instructional time to incorporate local stories and there are often gaps in resource development and approach from a local lens. This article seeks to help teachers articulate a locally driven inquiry approach. Using Illinois as the local framework and the C3 Inquiry Design Model as the tool, teachers can begin to map out how to implement the competing mandates to promote disciplinary skill development, demonstrate content expertise using state mandated units of study, drive student-oriented history, and foster civic competence all …

Synthesizing Sentience: Integrating Large Language Models And Autonomous Agents For Emulating Human Cognitive Complexity, Jay Ratican, James Hutson, Daniel Plate
Faculty Scholarship
The paper aims to present a novel methodology for emulating the intricacies of human cognitive complexity by ingeniously integrating large language models with autonomous agents. Grounded in the theoretical framework of the modular mind theory-originally espoused by Fodor and later refined by scholars such as Joanna Bryson—the study seeks to venture into the untapped potential of large language models and autonomous agents in mirroring human cognition. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, exemplified by the inception of autonomous agents like Age in GPT, auto GPT, and baby AGI, underscore the transformative capacities of these technologies in diverse applications. Moreover, empirical studies …

From Patriarchal Stereotypes To Matriarchal Pleasures Of Hybridity: Representation Of A Muslim Family In Berlin, Rahime Özgün Kehya Dr
Journal of Religion & Film
Sinan Çetin’s blockbuster Berlin in Berlin (1993) is a Turkish-German co-production. In contrast to certain representational tendencies with German orientalism or Turkish occidentalism, it deconstructs the intersectional structures of migration, religion, and gender. The portrayal of religion in films about Turkish-German labour migration is a kind of cultural narcissism often projected into national cinema by denigrating the faith of the other and glorifying one’s own religion. However, perspectives at such intersections are critical and require sensitivity in filmmaking, as films can create prejudice or help build peaceful relationships around these sensitive issues. The paper employs discourse analysis in linking Derrida’s …
Nonprofit Organizations And Arts Education In A Rural Community, Elise Lael Kieffer
Nonprofit Organizations And Arts Education In A Rural Community, Elise Lael Kieffer
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The connection between public administration and nonprofit administration has been in existence since ancient times, when individual volunteers (the predecessors of a formal nonprofit sector) met humanitarian needs to which the government was unwilling or unable to attend. Addams (1910) formalized this intersecting relationship during her time working in Chicago’s slums with refugees. Pandey & Johnsons (2019) drew connections between public administration, public policy, and nonprofit management. They concluded that discoveries in one of those domains should necessarily be applied to the others. They advised that continued research should draw explicit connections across those sectors and highlighted examples of the …
