Speech Beyond The Binary: Some Acoustic-Phonetic And Auditory-Perceptual Characteristics Of Non-Binary Speakers, Brandon Merritt
Speech Beyond The Binary: Some Acoustic-Phonetic And Auditory-Perceptual Characteristics Of Non-Binary Speakers, Brandon Merritt
Departmental Papers (Speech)
Speech acoustics research typically assumes speakers are men or women with speech characteristics associated with these two gender categories. Less work has assessed acoustic-phonetic characteristics of non-binary speakers. This study examined acoustic-phonetic features across adult cisgender (15 men and 15 women) and subgroups of transgender (15 nonbinary, 7 transgender men, and 7 transgender women) speakers and relations among these features and perceptual ratings of gender identity and masculinity/femininity. Differing acoustic-phonetic features were predictive of confidence in speaker gender and masculinity/femininity across cisgender and transgender speakers. Non-binary speakers were perceptually rated within an intermediate range of cisgender women and all other …
Infidelity, Liability, And Violence, Jason Manning
Infidelity, Liability, And Violence, Jason Manning
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
Much criminal violence arises from conflict and is moralistic. The perpetrator is punishing someone for a perceived wrong. Liability refers to accountability for a wrong: Who exactly has to suffer punishment? Here I argue that violence arising from infidelity and sexual jealousy is a strategic research site for studying liability. When these matters trigger lethal violence, there is variation in who the perpetrator targets. Using detailed descriptions of US homicides, as well as the cross-cultural ethnographic literature, I describe and classify three patterns of liability: mate, rival, and dual. I conclude by suggesting sociological factors relevant to explaining these patterns …
Ecohydrology, Cultural Perceptions, And Recovery Of Freshwater Wetlands In A Heavily Managed Urban Aquifer, Jessica Ashley Balerna
Ecohydrology, Cultural Perceptions, And Recovery Of Freshwater Wetlands In A Heavily Managed Urban Aquifer, Jessica Ashley Balerna
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater wetlands provide essential ecosystem services that influence, and are influenced by, human perceptions and behaviors. I explore these feedbacks in the Tampa Bay region, which hosts numerous freshwater wetlands subjected to population increases, economic growth, and shifting management policies. These wetlands are embedded in urban and residential areas, where people can observe and respond to changes in wetland condition over time. I utilized long-term (1991–2018), high sample size (n=152) datasets to assess how wetland inundation responds to the interactive effects of climate variation and shifts in water conservation policies primarily related to cutbacks in groundwater extraction. As wetland ecosystem …
Evaluation Of A Story-Telling Approach To Educate Minority Populations About Inherited Cancer, Celestyn B. Angot
Evaluation Of A Story-Telling Approach To Educate Minority Populations About Inherited Cancer, Celestyn B. Angot
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Utilization of hereditary cancer genetic counseling and testing services is substantially lower among minority populations compared to white populations due, in part, to lower levels of awareness and knowledge. To help improve awareness, we designed a 7-minute video that uses storytelling to translate knowledge of genetic testing and hereditary cancer to individuals who have a personal history or family history of cancer. Consented participants were asked baseline questions about hereditary cancer and genetic testing, reviewed the video, and provided feedback on its content, understandability, and visual appeal during semi-structured interviews. Data were coded and analyzed to identify themes and determine …
Plantation Pasts, Plantation Futures: Resisting Zombie Water Infrastructures In Maui, Hawai'i, Kelly Kay, Chris Knudson, Alida Cantor
Plantation Pasts, Plantation Futures: Resisting Zombie Water Infrastructures In Maui, Hawai'i, Kelly Kay, Chris Knudson, Alida Cantor
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sugar plantations have fundamentally shaped water use in Maui, Hawai’i for over 100 years, with tremendous resulting impacts on ecosystems and Native Hawaiian communities. In this paper, we build on literature on the plantationocene and the political lives of infrastructure to examine plantation irrigation infrastructure. We center Maui’s vast water conveyance ditch system as a means of understanding how infrastructure continues plantation logics into the present, considering both the physical ditches themselves as well as the laws and politics which support continued water extraction. We also consider infrastructural futures, highlighting ongoing efforts of communities seeking water justice via infrastructural control.
Quranic Symbol And Its Impact On Abbasy's Poetry, Mehdi Abedi Jezzini
Quranic Symbol And Its Impact On Abbasy's Poetry, Mehdi Abedi Jezzini
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Quran and its contents are the main sources for poets to derive their pictures and subjects. The writer aims at analysis Quranic symbols & their appearance in Abbasy's poets, to conclude a kind of literary – analytic from the level of these symbols in Abbasy poetry. The main results of this research that is written according to analytic-descriptive method, reveal that most of these symbols been derived from Quran, don't overstep comparative aspects, because they have been plunged into poem and aren't resulting from poet experience, therefore they are insignificant from artistic point, but they have their historical & religious …
The Politics Of Waves: A Transnational And Cultural Surfing History Of Popoyo, Nicaragua, Jason R. Old
The Politics Of Waves: A Transnational And Cultural Surfing History Of Popoyo, Nicaragua, Jason R. Old
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the 1970s and 1980s, as surfers were carving out new international surf spaces around the globe, Nicaragua was on a much different trajectory—one that engendered the Sandinista guerrilla insurgency that deposed a four-decade-long, US-backed dictatorship in 1979. In response, the United States waged a decade-long, low-intensity counterinsurgency against the Sandinista government. While other surfing destinations were growing in popularity, notably neighboring Costa Rica, Nicaragua was, by most accounts, considered off-limits due to the conflict. In 1990, a watershed moment fostered an environment conducive to international tourism and foreign investment. The election of Violeta Barrios Torres de Chamorro ushered in …

Relationship Between Treatment Comorbidities And Hiv Viral Suppression Among People Who Live With Aids In Johannesburg., Nwogo Immaculata Ekeji, Tolulope A. Osoba, Hebatullah Tawfik, Mehdi Agha
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
HIV has globally infected over 37.9 million people, of which 28.2 million (73%) are on antiretroviral treatment, and 66% of those on treatment are virally suppressed. In South Africa, however, low rate of viral suppression (47%) among people living with HIV is a major health problem that has continued to fuel HIV prevalence. A cross-sectional quantitative research design was used to investigate the relationship between treatment comorbidities and viral suppression among HIV-infected adults aged 18–49 who were diabetic, had cancer, or tuberculosis in Johannesburg. HIV Care Continuum formed the theoretical framework for this research. An existing HIV-infected patient de-identifiable dataset …
Dialogic Reciprocity And Contemplative Mentorship, Beth Connors-Manke
Dialogic Reciprocity And Contemplative Mentorship, Beth Connors-Manke
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
While widely recognized as an important part of education, mentorship is rarely taught as a pedagogical practice. In my article, I theorize mentorship philosophically and contemplatively by considering Martin Buber’s (1937) understanding of the I-Thou meeting. I also offer a taxonomy of mentorship, arguing that mentorship can recognize students’ personhood and prefigure the I-Thou encounter. My final sections offer praxis-oriented discussions on listening and grading as a way to prepare students for intersubjective encounters.
The “Science Of Social Justice”: An Interdisciplinary Theoretical Framework Grounded In Neuroscience, Education, And Anthropology Towards Healing Intergenerational Trauma, Sará King
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
The Science of Social Justice (SSJ) is a theoretical framework for healing intergenerational trauma which stems from the impact of the historical and lived embodied experience of systemic oppression. It explores the theoretical assertion that social justice and well-being are one and the same thing. This paper explores neuroeducational and anthropological research on the relationship between empathy, emotions, and awareness to analyze how embodied and contemplative practices such as yoga and meditation are examples of awareness-based interventions that can serve as the means of promoting embodied social justice. In this paper the Systems-Based Awareness Map (SBAM) is introduced as a …
Rising Up Rooted: Black Wisdom As Emancipatory Contemplative Practice For Resilience, Healing, And Liberation, Shelly P. Harrell
Rising Up Rooted: Black Wisdom As Emancipatory Contemplative Practice For Resilience, Healing, And Liberation, Shelly P. Harrell
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
Black wisdom is offered as a transformative, liberatory, and healing resource with particular applications for disrupting the five dynamics of oppression—dehumanization, disconnection, destruction, delusion, and disempowerment. Cultural wisdom is a key element of emancipatory contemplative practice which intentionally centers strategies for decolonizing inner life. The integration of Black wisdom into contemplative practices can provide an ancestral and experiential connection to a sense of belonging and “home,” as well as establish an empowering foundation from which personal and collective liberation can flourish. Black wisdom can be incorporated into contemplative practice through cultural expressions (music, African proverbs and symbols), applications that utilize …
Mindfulness And Indigenous Knowledge: Shared Narratives About Reconciliation And Decolonization In Teacher Education, Karen Ragoonaden, Tina Fraser, Ross Hoffman, Brenda Hebert
Mindfulness And Indigenous Knowledge: Shared Narratives About Reconciliation And Decolonization In Teacher Education, Karen Ragoonaden, Tina Fraser, Ross Hoffman, Brenda Hebert
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
This article discusses how shared narratives about mindfulness practices and Indigenous knowledge advance the reconciliation and the decolonization of Teacher Education curricula. We, the authors, experienced the beneficial impact of our personal mindfulness practices in nurturing and cultivating the harmonious balance of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the self. Within the context of the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action (2015), we observed the connections between mindfulness practices and local and place-based teachings of First Nation and Métis First Peoples in Northern British Columbia and in the Interior of British Columbia, Canada. Our experiences are informed by …
Music Listening As A Contemplative Practice In The College Classroom, Vanessa Cornett
Music Listening As A Contemplative Practice In The College Classroom, Vanessa Cornett
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
Music listening, a cultural practice most college students have in common, is well suited to mindfulness because music only occurs in linear time as it unfolds moment by moment. When students learn to listen mindfully to music or other external stimuli, they can begin to listen more attentively and objectively to their own thoughts. Cultivating the skill of external listening can help improve the skill of internal listening, thereby encouraging greater self-awareness. This paper describes the contemplative practices and experiences of students enrolled in two undergraduate liberal arts courses integrating music and mindfulness. The intent is to share, with other …

It's Harder Than It Looks: How Students Identify Original Research Articles In An Undergraduate Biology Course, Alyssa Russo, Amy Jankowski
It's Harder Than It Looks: How Students Identify Original Research Articles In An Undergraduate Biology Course, Alyssa Russo, Amy Jankowski
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Biology students must develop a foundational understanding about the role information plays in the scientific research process. Key to this is understanding that original research articles are the primary method of communicating findings from original scientific research. We analyzed data from an information literacy tutorial and worksheet integrated in a core undergraduate biology course to investigate how students identify original research articles. Our results suggest that students conceptually comprehend original research, but they need practice at identifying original research articles in real time and benefit from librarian feedback when they are actively searching for and selecting articles.

A Case-Finding Protocol For High Cardiovascular Risk In A Primary Care Dental School—Model With Integrated Care, Amazon Doble, Raul Bescos, Robert Witton, Shabir Shivji, Richard Ayres, Zoë Brookes
Peninsula Dental School
Background: National Health Service (NHS) strategies in the United Kingdom (UK) have highlighted the need to maximise case-finding opportunities by improving coverage in non-traditional settings with the aim of reducing delayed diagnosis of non-communicable diseases. Primary care dental settings may also help to identify patients. Methods: Case-finding appointments took place in a primary care dental school. Measurements of blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol, glucose and QRisk were taken along with a social/medical history. Participants with high cardiometabolic risk were referred to their primary care medical general practitioner (GP) and/or to local community health self-referral services, and followed up …

Advancing Black Youth Justice And Healing Through Contemplative Practices And African Spiritual Wisdom, Michelle C. Chatman
Advancing Black Youth Justice And Healing Through Contemplative Practices And African Spiritual Wisdom, Michelle C. Chatman
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
Enduring constructs of inequity seem to perpetually devalue Black youth, casting them as insignificant and disposable. Critical contemplative pedagogy can help us disrupt the damaging narratives and systems that impede youth thriving, while also awakening us to a deeper knowing of justice. In this reflective essay, I offer a reimagining of Black youth through the use of contemplative practices and West African cultural wisdom.
Markets As Legal Constructions, Gregory Brazeal
Markets As Legal Constructions, Gregory Brazeal
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Since at least the late 1970s, popular political and economic debates in the United States have often been framed in terms of a choice between “government” and “the market.” In addition, debates have often assumed that “the market” is associated with freedom while government “regulation” or “interference in the market” constitutes oppression.
This article begins by making the familiar observation that the distinction between “government” and “the market,” at least when taken at face value, makes no sense. Even idealized laissez-faire markets are creatures of the state and its market-structuring laws, including criminal law and the laws of property, contracts, …

Hiv Stalks Bodies Like Mine: An Autoethnography Of Self-Disclosure, Stigmatized Identity, And (In)Visibility In Queer Lived Experience, Steven Ryder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines self-disclosure of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status within the context of communication between long-standing friends. For the purposes of my study, I define this type of friendship as those who have known me for at least two years and with whom I communicate regularly. These are friends who tend to know a variety of personal details about me, ranging from superficial to private and trivial to essential. I use autoethnography to ground the study in my lived experience. By doing so, I present intimate accounts of my communication with others across my lifespan to function as background …

Many Rivers, One Ocean: An Initiative For Contemplative Study And Practice, Deborah Kipps-Vaughan, Jared Featherstone, Edward Brantmeier, Marsha Mays-Bernard, Kimberly Duvall, Shari Scofield
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
Contemplative practices, with their intentions toward well-being, authentic relationships, and deep learning, are beneficial to a community. Therefore, a sense of responsibility exists for universities to explore avenues for developing a culture of contemplative inquiry. This article describes a process embarked upon by members of a large state university community in their intentional pursuit to develop a more pervasive contemplative community on campus. Several faculty and staff with well-established personal practices in mind-body exercise, meditation, and mindfulness were motivated, within their respective professional roles, to incorporate contemplative work in classrooms and programs. Such integration is increasingly common at universities of …
Exploring Intentions And Outcomes In A Contemplative Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Aaron John Godlaski
Exploring Intentions And Outcomes In A Contemplative Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Aaron John Godlaski
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
Contemplative practices are becoming increasingly present in college classrooms, yet structured studies of the processes and outcomes experienced by students are still quite limited. In this study, I explore change processes within a group of undergraduate students experiencing meditation for the first time as part of a 3-week course on Buddhist philosophy. The following is a qualitative analysis of pre- and post-course focus group interviews with students. The results indicate that intentions at the outset of the course play a key role in deciding how students subsequently approach and experience practice. This early trajectory affects their maintenance of practice as …
Soulfulness As An Orientation To Contemplative Practice: Culture, Liberation, And Mindful Awareness, Shelly P. Harrell
Soulfulness As An Orientation To Contemplative Practice: Culture, Liberation, And Mindful Awareness, Shelly P. Harrell
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
Soulfulness is introduced here as an orientation to contemplative practice that centers a synergistic integration of the psychological, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of soul (deepness, aliveness, authenticity, and a healing/transformative resource) to inform the design and implementation of culturally attuned methods. Soulfulness is characterized by themes emerging from diasporic African cultural influences and inspired by an African American cultural sensibility. These themes include an ethos of interconnectedness, a relational/communal sensibility, the centrality of spirituality, creativity and improvisation, a holistic orientation to human experience, emotional expressiveness, resilience and overcoming adversity, and struggles for liberation in the context of historical and ongoing …

A Pedagogy Of Well-Being: Introducing Mindfulness To First-Year Access Students, Karen Ragoonaden
Journal of Contemplative Inquiry
This article examines the impact of introducing mindfulness practices to an Access (developmental) course aimed at first-year students. As a pathway to well-being, the cultivation of mindfulness supports the harmonious balance of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the self. An ancillary aim of this qualitative study is to examine the similarities between mindfulness practices and traditional teachings of First Nation, Inuit and Métis First Peoples of Canada. Using precepts from the Medicine Wheel of Learning, the content of a developmental course entitled University 101 was adapted to incorporate Indigenous traditions of teaching and learning. Acknowledging this holistic …
