“Before I Am Quite Forgot": Women’S Critical Literary Biography And The Future, Susan Carlile
“Before I Am Quite Forgot": Women’S Critical Literary Biography And The Future, Susan Carlile
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
“‘Before I am Quite Forgot’: Women’s Critical Literary Biography and the Future” extends the conversation about literary “worth” in the twenty-first century as it still judges and ignores women authors of the past. Specifically, this essay explores the role of women’s literary historical biography as a primary marker of worth and as a means of shaping legacy. I also discuss my (perhaps more non-traditional) experience—both my personal circumstances and particular material conditions—writing the critical biography Charlotte Lennox: An Independent Mind. Without a substantial biography that shows the scope of Lennox’s mind, her significant corpus, and her interventions in literary history …
Reconceptualizing Citation Practices As “Feminist Memory”, Lc Santangelo
Reconceptualizing Citation Practices As “Feminist Memory”, Lc Santangelo
Feminist Pedagogy
Relying on feminist theory, this Original Teaching Activity foregrounds citation as celebration, rather than chore, to encourage students to rethink previous assumptions. In all, the lesson hopes to show students that citation connects scholars to one another and therefore merits our careful attention, at the same time it makes visible preconceived notions that limit how we define "scholarship."

Walking Self-Portraits: Scores For Creative Exploration Of Space, Jody Stokes-Casey, Catalina Hernandez-Cabal, Ahu Yolaç
Feminist Pedagogy
In this original teaching activity, participants work from a set of movement and mark-making scores to explore three dimensions of experience—memory, intervention, and collectivity—in dialogue with art, museum space, and one another.
A Short History Of The Holmes County, Ohio, Amish Directory And Genetics Research, Harold Cross
A Short History Of The Holmes County, Ohio, Amish Directory And Genetics Research, Harold Cross
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
In this first-hand account, Harold “Hal” Cross, a researcher instrumental in the dawning of Amish genetic/demographic studies, recounts his memories of early projects and the development of the first Amish directories. Interest in Amish genetics emerged in the 1960s, as Cross, then a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, informed Victor A McKusick, Professor of Medicine, about the potential for studying genetic disease among the Amish. Cross, working under McKusick’s direction, then collaborated with Amishman Ervin Gingerich of Holmes County, OH, in completing the first full-size household-level Amish directory in 1965. The effort was financed in part …

Subjectivity In The Lancaster Amish Community Study Of 1940-42: 'Economic Conquest' In Loomis’S Diary And Rosinow’S Photographs, Elizabeth Bennett
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
The American Farm Community Study (1940), funded by the USDA’s Bureau of Agricultural Economics, was a social investigation that sought to determine why some rural communities thrive while others fail. To conduct the Study, the Bureau sent social scientists to six rural communities across the country to investigate and document the most and least “stable” American communities. Geographer Walter Kollmorgen, sociologist Charles Loomis, and photographer Irving Rusinow documented the Old Order Amish of Lancaster County, PA, as the “most stable” community in the Study. In Lancaster, the men found a people thriving in the midst of english neighbors still economically …

In 1967: An Ethnography Of The Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Old Order Mennonites, John Caughey
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This study is an overview of the culture of the Pennsylvania Old Order Mennonites of the Groffdale Conference. It is based on the six months of anthropological field work I carried out in Lancaster County in the spring and summer of 1967. Oriented by ethnographic emphasis on the world view, conceptual system, key concepts, and basic practices that characterized the community during that period, it explores Old Order Mennonite religion, farming, family, community, and relations with outsiders. Based on conversations and interviews with a variety of Old Order Mennonite farmers, particularly intensive interviews with one key participant and his family, …

The Plain Anabaptist People At Mid-Century (1930-1969) / In Memoriam, Cory Anderson, Steven Reschly
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
With volume 11, JAPAS now enters its second decade of publication. For those keeping count, Volume 10 included only one issue, for this editor needed a short sabbatical after a decade of leadership. In this issue, we focus on a recent past—the plain people at mid-century (roughly 1930-70)—that is slowly becoming a more distant past. Those experiencing this era are largely aged or have passed on, and in this issue, we spend time reviewing the historical documents, research and data, and autobiographies they have left. The Uncomfortable Subjectsituating Cultural Relativism And Conservative Movements In Indonesia, Ibnu Nadzir
The Uncomfortable Subjectsituating Cultural Relativism And Conservative Movements In Indonesia, Ibnu Nadzir
Antropologi Indonesia
sense of rejection toward other groups, whether based on ethnicity, religion, or any other identity markers, has always been a delicate matter for an anthropologist. Departing from the premise of cultural relativism, anthropologists are trained to empathize with their research subjects. However, similar empathy could not easily be exercised to research subjects whose conservative views contradict cultural relativism. The dilemma might explain why research on hate, racist groups, is relatively rare in anthropology or social sciences in general. Even if anthropologists are able to sympathize with the point of view of such groups, the research presentation poses another problem: how …

Berdamai Dengan Keterbatasan Epistemologis: Dilema Metodologis Pada Riset Etnografi Di Ranah Virtual, Febi Rizki Ramadhan
Antropologi Indonesia
Following the proliferation of digital media usage, the world has seen an increasing amount of digitally-mediated lives in everyday contexts. While anthropological scholarship has started to address this ever-growing subject, anthropologists are mainly preoccupied with human engagements in virtual worlds that have their own tangible and embodied sense of spatiality (e.g., online role-playing and gaming communities). In so doing, anthropologists have yet to comprehensively delve into online practices in more disembodied and intangible networked environments like Facebook. In this article, I examine methodological challenges faced by anthropologists who study online communities in such disembodied worlds. I draw on my ongoing …
“Is This Anthropological Enough?” Reflection On Ethnographic Fieldwork And Limitations Of The Body, Sari Damar Ratri, Hestu Prahara
“Is This Anthropological Enough?” Reflection On Ethnographic Fieldwork And Limitations Of The Body, Sari Damar Ratri, Hestu Prahara
Antropologi Indonesia
This article reflects on the troubling aspects of an ethnographic method that helps to maintain anthropology as a discipline of the privileged. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how people interact socially. Although much ethnographic fieldwork is situated in settings that require face-to-face interactions, the pandemic has made the prospect of future fieldwork in the same manner uncertain. Learning from the current physical distancing, we discuss ethnographic methods that center on possibilities and limitations of the body as a tool of inquiry. We reflect on the possibilities of conducting ethnographic fieldwork when the body as a corporeal entity is undergoing physical …

Arsip Sebagai “Mata Ketiga:” Hikayat Rezim Pangan Di Kalimantan, Rio Heykhal Belvage
Antropologi Indonesia
This paper is based on an archival study in the context of river agroecosystem change in Central Kalimantan. Based on several sources of archives, there’s a thing which significantly affected the changes in the water system in Kalimantan, namely a food regime which started in early 20th century. The discovery leads to three things. First, there is an intense relationship between food regime and knowledge regime that contributes to environmental damage. Second, there is a sustained bias behind the government's food policy since colonial to current post-colonial period. Lastly, there is perpetual failure of the food regime. Under the food …

Mulyawan Karim (2021), "Di Rumah Panjang; Pergulatan Hidup Dan Cinta Orang Dayak Iban", Dave Lumenta
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This is a book review of Di Rumah Panjang: Pergulatan Hidup dan Cinta Orang Dayak Iban authored by journalist-anthropologist Mulyawan Karim. This is a popularly-written ethnographic account on the Iban of West Kalimantan based on the author's travels in 1993/94 and 2018. As the body of literature on the Iban on the Indonesian side is generally small, this monograph is the first of its kind written in Indonesian. What Mulyawan Karim has achieved in thematically positioning his book is in exploring personal life struggles and even love stories, two important themes of everyday life that are arguably absent from the …

"Mama Lima"; The Significance Of Women’S Role In Protecting Nature, Nurture, And Culture In Banda Islands, Muhammad Farid, Juul Sadée
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The historiography of Banda has paid little attention to the existence of women. Stories involving women are mainly about romance, family, and suffering. In reality, the existence of “Mama Lima” (groups of five women) is very strong in the Banda tradition (adat). They are the carriers of knowledge and tradition, a consequence of matriarchy. They determine the content and implementation of adat ceremonies like Buka kampong, forming the set of social norms and customary law of the community. Mama Lima groups are a living example of women throughout the ages who have played a significant …
Indonesia’S Women; Diversity And Dynamics, Anke Niehof
Indonesia’S Women; Diversity And Dynamics, Anke Niehof
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The study of Indonesian women inevitably involves methodological questions, a prime one being whether Indonesian women as a category form a meaningful object of study. In edited volumes on Indonesian women, the contributions usually form a mosaic of different kinds of Indonesian women, defined by variables such as ethnicity, class, residence, or historical time. This raises questions about diversity and difference and the applicability of specific findings to Indonesian women in general. Taking as a point of departure that it is useful to treat Indonesian women’s studies as one field of study, I explore these issues in relation to women’s …

Depiction Restoring Women’S Power Through Eatery Names, Ajar Pradika Ananta Tur, Arini Sabrina, Azelin Mohamed Noor, Yashinta Farahsani, Ida Puspita, Muhammad Hafiz Kurniawan
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Empowering women entails bolstering their mentality and state of mind, as patriarchy is founded not only on sexuality. Addressing a married woman with the name of her husband or first son is claimed to be a sign of respect. Woman’s public inclusion is also still considered undervalued, which is shown in the way they name eateries. This study, which unfolds eatery names in Yogyakarta Municipality in Indonesia and Malacca in Malaysia, two places with identical historical backgrounds, analysed women’s efforts to increase their bargaining position in society through the naming of their eateries. Although two eateries do place women in …
Minangkabau Mothers And Daughters In Contemporary "Rantau" Society; Regaining Power With Modified Matrilineal Principles And Patriarchal "Rantau" Norms, Mina Elfira
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The action of pai marantau (emigrating) is usually associated with the Minangkabau, the world’s largest matrilineal society, and one of the most fervently Islamic societies in Indonesia – the country with the largest Muslim population in the world. Once, it was mainly men who migrated, but more recently, women have also been emigrating. One consequence of emigrating from the matrilineal heartland in West Sumatra is that women lose some of the privileges conferred by the matrilineal adat, especially those pertaining to inheritance. Using qualitative fieldwork methods and Kandiyoti’s theory of the patriarchal bargain (1988), this paper explores how these …

The Applicability Of The Postmortem Submersion Interval Estimation Formula For Human Remains Found In Subtropical Aquatic Environments, Kara L. Dicomo
The Applicability Of The Postmortem Submersion Interval Estimation Formula For Human Remains Found In Subtropical Aquatic Environments, Kara L. Dicomo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the past decade, several attempts have been made to standardize a method for estimating postmortem submersion intervals (PMSI); however, the majority of these studies have focused on data from a temperate climate which cannot be taken as representative of large portions of the globe. Thus, there are large portions of the earth in which the methodology from these studies may not be able to accurately estimate PMSI which has the potential to leave investigators in these other climatic zones at a disadvantage. This presentation presents a case study into the applicability of two Total Body Scoring Systems (TADS) utilized …

Doings With Land: Process And Participation Through Indigenous-Led, Experiential Education In Saqáanpa (The Snake River In Hells Canyon), Clark Shimeall
University Honors Theses
In our rapidly unraveling world, the re-centering of Indigenous ways of being and knowing is more important than ever. This re-centering is based in cultural revitalization and transmission within Indigenous communities, and these processes are intimately tied to relationship with Land. This writing describes the "doing" of an Indigenous-led experiential educational program for Nez Perce and Cayuse descended youth -- the Saqáanma School -- which was conducted via whitewater raft on pik'uunin (the Snake River) through saqáanpa (Hells Canyon) in July 2021. The complex exchanges between people, culture, and Land embodied in this project are examined through Barker and Pickerill's …

A Grounded Theory Study Of The Grief Process In Women Who Experienced Perinatal Loss Prior To 1980, Tina L. Saunders
A Grounded Theory Study Of The Grief Process In Women Who Experienced Perinatal Loss Prior To 1980, Tina L. Saunders
Dissertations
Approximately one million women suffer from perinatal loss (PL) in the United States annually. Societal and provider knowledge and attitudes about the psychological effects of PL and the need for care and support have improved significantly since the 1980s. Anecdotal evidence indicates that experiencing PL still affects women decades later; however, its impact on their grief process and long-lasting effects has not been researched. These narratives are vital to informing support and care. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical framework describing grief processes and long-lasting effects on women experiencing PL before 1980.

Working Paper No. 84, Designing The Future: The Influence Of Lloyd J. Reynolds On American Product Innovation, Bander Qadan
Working Papers in Economics
This research inquiry shall explore how critical advances in American design products and consumerism can be traced back to the late Lloyd J. Reynolds and the silent yet powerful influence he has had on a generation of students, such as the innovative pioneer, Steve Jobs. Lloyd J. Reynolds was a renowned calligrapher and teacher at Reed College. The inquiry is structured chronologically, leading to Apple's 2022 valuation of about two trillion dollars. Four significant areas shall be examined to trace this trajectory. Firstly, the paper examines the effects of calligraphy/typography on Lloyd J. Reynolds. Secondly, it delves into Steve Jobs’ …

Generative Phonology Models Of Universal Grammar: Constraint-Based Optimality Theory As Opposed To The Rule-Based Spe Model, Ahmed Hamid Abdulrazzaq
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Current linguistic theory presumes languages to be essentially similar because individuals have a genetic inclination to acquire language. Linguists strive to create a model of this abstract universal grammar that captures the core commonalities among different languages while allowing room for all the subtle differences that naturally occur in human speech. This all-encompassing theory of universal grammar would accurately distinguish between possible grammars and impossible grammars. This paper examines the main tenets of the two major generative phonology models of universal grammar: SPE’s Generative Phonology theory representing rule-based, derivational universal grammar models, and Optimality Theory as a representative of constraint-based …
Initial Understanding Of Public Stigma Against Childhood Cancer Survivors, Nele Loecher
Initial Understanding Of Public Stigma Against Childhood Cancer Survivors, Nele Loecher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As childhood cancer survival rates climb to new records, it is increasingly important to focus on improving the psychological wellbeing of survivors living years beyond their diagnosis. One potential contributor to psychological distress for childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) is stigma. The fear of stigma can lead to CCSs concealing their identity as a CCS, which in turn can strain workplace and intimate relationships, creating a strain on CCSs’ social and work life. Additionally, the internalization of negative stereotypes or rejection of falsely positive stereotypes around cancer can exacerbate psychological distress. To establish what stereotypes and stigma CCS might be contending …

Choosing To Come Back: Second-Generation Egyptians Returning As Social Change Agents, Hajar Khalil
Theses and Dissertations
Research has found that upon visiting their parents’ homeland, second-generation immigrants were able to gain a better understanding of where they came from, allowing them to reflect upon their own lives in respect to their family history (Marschall, 2017). Some researchers call this journey the ‘self-awakening’ or ‘searching-self’ journey (Christou, 2003). The aim of this research is to understand the process of second-generation Egyptians return journey to their parent(s)’ homeland in order to create social change. The two main questions posed are: 1) How do second-generation Egyptians construct their narrative identity, and 2) How do they conceptualize themselves as social …

Language Borrowing Among Syrians Speaking Arabic In The United States: Arabization Of English Words, Joanne Stephen
Theses and Dissertations
Immigration to the United States from different Arab countries have been occurring for the past couple of centuries. Arabs from many countries are still migrating to different States in America. Getting adapted to a whole new place, new culture, and especially a new language could be difficult. Cultural and language contact in some cases causes what is called “language borrowing”. This study identified and examined different words that Syrian Arabic speakers in the United States of America borrow from the English language and arabize them. This study investigated the different approaches that native Arabic speakers follow in order to adapt …
