Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to better understand how first-generation Brazilian immigrants to Utah’s Salt Lake and Utah Valleys perceive, preserve, and transmit their identity. With this purpose in mind, I hope to add to the previous studies and discussion of identity in the Brazilian diaspora in the United States. The study focuses on the question: How do first-generation Brazilians living in Utah and Salt Lake Valleys perceive their own identities? Additionally, it seeks to answer the following subquestions: How is identity preserved among first-generation Brazilian immigrants to Utah and Salt Lake Valleys and where and how is identity …

Parent Involvement In Elementary Schools, Abbey Koessel
Parent Involvement In Elementary Schools, Abbey Koessel
Masters Projects
According to research, the lack of parent involvement in elementary schools can have long-term effects on things like student engagement and overall academic success. This issue becomes more prevalent in high needs, low SES schools as parents face more difficulties and obstacles when trying to be involved. This project uses Joyce Epstein’s framework and related research to develop interventions meant to increase and encourage parent involvement in different ways. There will be a focus on family-school partnerships and communication, parent workshops, and school-based involvement opportunities. Through the implementation of this project, it is hoped that parent engagement increases and student’s …

Redesigning An Effective Pathway To Consumer Loyalty For Sustainable Competitive Advantage, Stephen P. Panczak
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The qualitative case study aimed to study the impact of leadership behaviors on delivering hospitality frontline employee services to customers to sustain consumer loyalty and gain a sustainable competitive advantage in the South Florida hospitality and tourism industry. The flexible design allowed the researcher to develop specific research questions while focusing on the problem statement, which addressed the potential inability of U.S. business leaders in service-related industries to gain customer loyalty, resulting in the possible loss of competitive advantage for the organizations. The researcher selected a highly successful South Florida luxury hotel resort, and twenty-nine professionally diversified participants were interviewed …
Thomas Jefferson: Slavery, Education, And The Public Mind, Brendan Lenahan
Thomas Jefferson: Slavery, Education, And The Public Mind, Brendan Lenahan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Thomas Jefferson’s autobiography reveals his continual struggle against slavery and his frustration at the resistance of the “public mind” in Virginia, predominantly composed of slave-owning aristocrats. Despite vocal condemnations of slavery, attempts to translate his anti-slavery stance into formal documents faced significant resistance from the society he aimed to change. Even within the House of Burgess, Jefferson's support for a bill allowing individual slave owners to free their slaves was met with contempt. His draft of the Declaration of Independence, condemning the King for slavery, was revised by delegates, impeded by both northern financiers of the slave trade and southern …

A Model For Biblical Worldview Development In Non-Denominational Christian Young Adults: A Dissertation-In-Praxis, Calvin Perry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The ideas of worldview and worldview development have not been around long but have been a matter of interest and understanding in the non-denominational area of Christianity, along with the field of scholarly research. Organizational theories play a major role in the development of all individuals. The purpose of this dissertation-in-praxis study was to test and apply a theoretical model for biblical worldview development among non-denominational Christians, ages 24-29. A qualitative method was employed using an applied research design following a deductive research approach. A worldview model was created to help understand the worldview perspective of participants. In qualitative research, …

Europe As A Celebrated Community Of Culture. The Council Of Europe’S Art Exhibitions In The 1950s, Lefteris Spyrou
Europe As A Celebrated Community Of Culture. The Council Of Europe’S Art Exhibitions In The 1950s, Lefteris Spyrou
Artl@s Bulletin
Born as part of a Europe-building process in the aftermath of WWII, the Council of Europe emerged, during the 1950s, as the leading intergovernmental organisation for cultural cooperation in Europe. This paper examines the Art Exhibitions held under its auspices in different western-European cities between 1954 and 1961. Presenting in chronological order the major artistic movements in Europe from the Renaissance to 1914, the exhibitions were quite successful in terms of public attendance, and became the most important institutional initiative in visualising the idea of European unity based on a shared cultural heritage.
The New World Debate And The 18th-Century Images Of America That Brought Europe Together, Catherine Dossin
The New World Debate And The 18th-Century Images Of America That Brought Europe Together, Catherine Dossin
Artl@s Bulletin
The New World Debate offers a privileged site to reconstruct and study Europe’s self-image in the 18th century. Taking on Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes, Voltaire’s Alzire et les Americains, and De Pauw’s Recherches philosophiques sur les Américains, this paper traces the process through which Europe elaborated a Eurocentric view of the world organization through a paternalistic, usually benevolent but always contemptuous, relation to America that would come to define Europe’s colonial expansion of the 19th century and make colonialism an essential, yet uncomfortable, dimension of Europe’s modern identity.
Fashioning Europe: Identity And Dress In Early Modern Costume Books, Emilia Olechnowicz
Fashioning Europe: Identity And Dress In Early Modern Costume Books, Emilia Olechnowicz
Artl@s Bulletin
This article aims to demonstrate how early modern costume books attempted to define the identities of Europeans. They presented a system of social stratifications, describing the presumed differences between people of various origins, age, gender, and, above all, social position. The existence of these differences was presented as part of an order not only social and political but also moral and religious. On closer inspection, however, it becomes apparent that these differences had as much to do with actual cultural disparities between people as with the different perspectives and attitudes of the authors of the individual books.

Inscribing Violence: Quantifying The Impact Of World Heritage Site Inscription On Direct And Structural Violence., Anne Chance
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
The World Heritage Program and nomination process have undergone considerable criticism regarding their impact on host nations. These critics have often described violence as an unintended side-effect of heritage sites, but this research has lacked a systematic analysis of types of violence associated with the inscription of sites. The background to this study explores the application of Galtung’s Triangle of Violence, which considers the symbiotic dynamics of cultural violence, structural violence, and direct violence. In so doing, I constructed the Measures of Structural Violence matrix by which to examine direct and structural violence in states that host heritage sites.

Reclaiming Indigenous History: Pyroepistomology And Social Justice, Paulette Steeves

The Indigenous past of the Americas has been fabricated to fit into neoliberal time frames of imagined “New Worlds". The past remains a tool of dis-empowerment created by American archaeologists to keep Indigenous civilizations as “infantile” on a global scale. In the Americas, the deep Indigenous past prior to 12,000 years before the present has been aggressively denied for over a century. Anthropologists’ denial of the deep Indigenous past of the Americas, has cleaved Indigenous people’s links to their homeland and created them as recent immigrants to the Americas, on a global scale of human history. Yet, Indigenous oral traditions …

Student Research
There are two main focuses of this paper: to address the care that AD patients in countries with few healthcare resources receive and to explore the experiences of familial caregivers who care for these patients. This thesis will investigate issues including access to the education required to administer informed care, who is ultimately responsible for caring for AD patients in countries with few health facilities, and the lack of resources that is apparent in countries that do not have AD specialists or clinics. This paper will pinpoint the root issue in treating AD patients globally to serve as the first …
