Auxiliary Features-Guided Super Resolution For Monte Carlo Rendering, Qiqi Hou, Feng Liu
Auxiliary Features-Guided Super Resolution For Monte Carlo Rendering, Qiqi Hou, Feng Liu
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper investigates super-resolution to reduce the number of pixels to render and thus speed up Monte Carlo rendering algorithms. While great progress has been made to super-resolution technologies, it is essentially an ill-posed problem and cannot recover high-frequency details in renderings. To address this problem, we exploit high-resolution auxiliary features to guide super-resolution of low-resolution renderings. These high-resolution auxiliary features can be quickly rendered by a rendering engine and at the same time provide valuable high-frequency details to assist super-resolution. To this end, we develop a cross-modality transformer network that consists of an auxiliary feature branch and a low-resolution …

Spontaneous Collapse As A Prognostic Marker For Human Blastocysts: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Kate Bickendorf, Fang Qi, Kelli Peirce, Jay Natalwala, Vincent Chapple, Yanhe Liu
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
STUDY QUESTION: Is spontaneous collapse (SC) by human blastocysts a prognostic factor in IVF treatment? SUMMARY ANSWER: SC in human blastocyst is associated with reduced euploid embryo and pregnancy rates. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: SC of the human blastocyst is a phenomenon that was revealed relatively recently following the clinical application of time-lapse monitoring in IVF laboratories. The ploidy and clinical prognosis of affected blastocysts are still poorly understood, with inconsistent reports. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses on this topic are currently absent in the literature but its potential as a marker of embryo viability holds great clinical value. In this …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objectives: Observational studies consistently demonstrate that physical activity is associated with elevated cognitive function, however, there remains significant heterogeneity in cognitive outcomes from randomized exercise interventions. Individual variation in sleep behaviours may be a source of variability in the effectiveness of exercise-induced cognitive change, however this has not yet been investigated. The current study aimed to (1) investigate the influence of a 6-month exercise intervention on sleep, assessed pre- and post-intervention and, (2) investigate whether baseline sleep measures moderate exercise-induced cognitive changes. Methods: We utilised data from the Intense Physical Activity and Cognition (IPAC) study (n = 89), a 6-month …

Attaining The Right To Environment Through Environmental Impact Assessment, Umair Saleem
Dissertations & Theses
The thesis discusses the interconnection between the right to environment and environmental impact assessment (EIA), elaborating their depth and collective potential to effectively address most – if not all – of the complex and interconnected environmental challenges.
Firstly, the thesis explores the evolution of the environmental laws from the year 1900 and provides a unifying synthesis of the diverse environmental components, obligations, rights, and principles within international, regional, and national environmental laws. Secondly, it identifies the right to environment as a unifying and holistic right that integrates these environmental concepts and encapsulates comprehensive environmental protection. Thirdly, it provides a comparison …

Stay Out Of My Head: Neurodata, Privacy, And The First Amendment, Wayne Unger
Stay Out Of My Head: Neurodata, Privacy, And The First Amendment, Wayne Unger
Washington and Lee Law Review
The once science-fictional idea of mind-reading is within reach as advancements in brain-computer interfaces, coupled with advanced artificial intelligence, produce neurodata—the collection of substantive thoughts as storable and processable data. But government access to individuals’ neurodata threatens personal autonomy and the right to privacy. While the Fourth Amendment is traditionally considered the source of privacy protections against government intrusion, the First Amendment provides more robust protections with respect to whether governments can access one’s substantive ideas, thoughts, and beliefs. However, many theorists assert that the concept of privacy conflicts with the First Amendment because privacy restricts the flow of information …
Constitutional Resilience, Shannon M. Roesler
Constitutional Resilience, Shannon M. Roesler
Washington and Lee Law Review
Since the New Deal era, our system of constitutional governance has relied on expansive federal authority to regulate economic and social problems of national scale. Throughout the twentieth century, Congress passed ambitious federal statutes designed to address these problems. In doing so, it often enlisted states as regulatory partners—creating a system of shared governance that underpins major environmental statutes, such as the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. These governance structures remain important today as we seek to adapt our laws and institutions to the serious disruptions of climate change. But recent Supreme Court decisions challenge this long-established …
Preparing For The Flood: Virginia Local Governments' Stormwater Management Liability, James E. Davidson
Preparing For The Flood: Virginia Local Governments' Stormwater Management Liability, James E. Davidson
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
This Note explains that modern interpretations of Virginia Code § 15.2-970 have made Virginia municipalities immune to tort suits arising from the negligent maintenance of stormwater systems. Due to the Virginia Supreme Court’s holdings in Livingston v. Virginia Department of Transportation and other inverse condemnation suits, localities may be found liable when their stormwater management decisions cause property damage. However, following the Court’s holding in AGCS Marine Insurance Co. v. Arlington County, which prevented inverse condemnation claims arising from municipal negligence, residents are still unlikely to find legal redress for negligent stormwater management that results in property damage. Therefore, this …

Biology Student Scholarship
This data is from a public science project conducted by Sophie O'Shei (Gonzaga '24) investigating pollinator diversity in and around Gonzaga's campus. Photos of plants and pollinators were submitted using iNaturalist, an online platform and app that allows users to upload photos of animals, plants, insects, etc. and identifies their species using AI. It also tracks where photos were taken. Users were then able to go through uploaded images and suggest what species they identify in the photo, which can confirm or correct the AI's identification.
The project started during Earth Week 2023, giving students, staff, and other members …

Using Industry Sector Entropy To Predict Economic Community Disaster Resilience: Real-World Verification From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thomas Brindle
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an opportunity for disaster science researchers to gain insight into the underlying nature of community resilience through comparing the socioeconomic effects of government action to a common threat across urban population centers of varying economic compositions. For example, the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on employment related to public health mitigation efforts in the leisure and hospitality sector of Las Vegas, NV, during the onset of the pandemic were well publicized. In comparison, other population centers of similar size but with different economic sector composition varied in the degree to which employment were affected, …

Novel Strategies In Antithrombotic Therapy: Targeting Thrombosis While Preserving Hemostasis, Martha M. S. Sim, Semekidus Shiferawe, Jeremy P. Wood
Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications
Antithrombotic therapy is a delicate balance between the benefits of preventing a thrombotic event and the risks of inducing a major bleed. Traditional approaches have included antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, require careful dosing and monitoring, and all carry some risk of bleeding. In recent years, several new targets have been identified, both in the platelet and coagulation systems, which may mitigate this bleeding risk. In this review, we briefly describe the current state of antithrombotic therapy, and then present a detailed discussion of the new generation of drugs that are being developed to target more safely existing or newly identified …

The Role Of Cross-Reactive Immunity To Emerging Coronaviruses: Implications For Novel Universal Mucosal Vaccine Design, Wael Alturaiki
The Role Of Cross-Reactive Immunity To Emerging Coronaviruses: Implications For Novel Universal Mucosal Vaccine Design, Wael Alturaiki
Saudi Medical Journal
Host immune response to coronaviruses and the role of cross-reactivity immunity among different coronaviruses are crucial for understanding and combating the continuing COVID-19 outbreak and potential subsequent pandemics. This review paper explores how previous exposure to common cold coronaviruses and more pathogenic coronaviruses may elicit a protective immune response against SARS-CoV-2 infection, and discusses the challenges posed by some variants of concern that may escape current vaccines. It also highlights the need for a mucosal universal vaccine that can induce long-term protection against current and emerging coronaviruses by leveraging cross-reactive immunity. We propose a novel mucosal universal vaccine that consists …

Compensating For Effects Of Autotomy On Locomotion In Stink Bugs (Halyomorpha Halys), Lilian C. Jubb
Compensating For Effects Of Autotomy On Locomotion In Stink Bugs (Halyomorpha Halys), Lilian C. Jubb
Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal
Autotomy is the voluntary release of an appendage, typically to avoid predation or entrapment. Autonomy of a single leg can have minimal effects on locomotion in arthropods with more than six legs. Hexapods, however, use a double-tripod gait which is completely disrupted with the loss of a single leg, thus locomotor performance should be greatly reduced leading to lower survival. Autotomy is so costly to locomotion that some insects regenerate a lost limb in a subsequent molt leading to reduced investment in other important functions (e.g. reproduction). Autotomy persists in adult hexapods with no opportunity for regeneration, which suggests some …

The Lord's Providence To Work Evil For Good - Genesis 50:15-21, Elisabeth Nieshalla
Biblical Studies Student Projects
Genesis, the great first book of the Bible, concludes with a redemptive and reconciliatory scene between Joseph and his brothers that strikes the heart of those. Joseph had endured much hardship at the hands of his brothers, having been sold by them into Egyptian slavery and then thrown into prison when he was falsely accused of sexual assault by Potiphar’s wife. Through it all, however, he remained faithful to God and was entrusted with authority over all of Egypt to lead them through a famine that would have otherwise devastated the entire region. This scene in Genesis 50 testifies to …

Public Relations Student Projects
Because the goal of this campaign is to promote Grant County assets, initial research sought to assess communication throughout the county, gather insight on the impact of churches, and accumulate information on how to best retain its college students. Research also sought to identify the personas of Grant County residents to discover their values and beliefs. Additional research helped determine the most appealing assets, including churches and nonprofits, universities, parks and venues, events, and affordable living. Additionally, a survey was conducted to understand why students who attend colleges in Grant County choose to leave the county upon graduation.
