Consequences Of Childhood Maltreatment And Exposure To Community Violence: A Single-Moment And Longitudinal Trajectory Examination, Suzanne Charlotte Estrada
Consequences Of Childhood Maltreatment And Exposure To Community Violence: A Single-Moment And Longitudinal Trajectory Examination, Suzanne Charlotte Estrada
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Childhood adversity is one of the strongest predictors of long-term psychological, social, and physical negative life outcomes. Two subtypes of adversity, one perpetrated by someone in the home environment (i.e., childhood maltreatment, parental harshness) and the other perpetrated by someone in the community (i.e., exposure to community violence), are especially salient predictors of poor mental health and increased antisocial behavior. Research aimed at describing the occurrence of adversity often examines these subtypes separately. As a result, our understanding of the ways individuals experience adversity in the home and community and the long-term impact of co-occurring adversity is limited. Additionally, perhaps following …
Investigating The Synaptic Plasticity Mechanisms Underlying A Learned Behavioral Preference In C. Elegans, Joon Ha Lee
Investigating The Synaptic Plasticity Mechanisms Underlying A Learned Behavioral Preference In C. Elegans, Joon Ha Lee
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
A fundamental goal in neuroscience is to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate learned behavioral preferences, or memories. While modulation of synaptic connections has been well-established as a component of memory formation, there remains a critical lack in understanding of how specific molecular changes that alter synaptic physiology result in learned behaviors. In this thesis, I utilize the paradigm of learned thermal preferences and the connection between a sensory neuron (AFD) and its postsynaptic partner (AIY) in Caenorhabditis elegans to bridge this gap at the single-synapse level. I first characterize the neurotransmission requirements of this synapse and find …

Tenascin-C: A Regulator Of Venous Remodeling Following Aortocaval Fistula Creation, Luis Gonzalez
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) represents a growing medical problem globally with a high burden to patients. In the United States alone more than 740,000 individuals have ESKD and are primarily dependent on hemodialysis for treatment. For patients who require hemodialysis, arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) are the preferred mode of vascular access due to their superior patency rates and reduced infection rates when compared to grafts or catheters. However, the lifespan of an AVF is limited by several complications, which includes neointimal hyperplasia (NIH) and thrombosis. Loss of AVF patency at 1-year ranges ~40-50%. Successful AVF maturation is characterized by venous wall …
Specters Of Degradation: Poverty And Uplift In Modern Political Thought, Chris Anthony Chambers
Specters Of Degradation: Poverty And Uplift In Modern Political Thought, Chris Anthony Chambers
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation traces the imprint of Adam Smith on modern political theories of poverty and uplifting the poor to provide an original account of the surprising synergies between conservative, liberal, and radical perspectives on redressing poverty. Offering the first manuscript-length study of poverty and the poor in the history of political thought since the 2000s, it examines how claims about the degradation of the poor have paradoxically animated while limiting ideas of uplift and perfectibility. I show how, by focusing on the moral condition of the poor and effects of poverty, conservatives, liberals, and radicals alike reproduced hateful stereotypes about …
Bacterial Cell Surface Characterization By Phage Display Coupled To High-Throughput Sequencing, Casey Grun
Bacterial Cell Surface Characterization By Phage Display Coupled To High-Throughput Sequencing, Casey Grun
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Antimicrobial resistance is a looming threat that reflects the remarkable capacity of bacteria to adapt and change in response to selective pressures. The versatile pathogen P. aeruginosa is a model case---already intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics, it can establish decades-long chronic infections, during which it evolves to survive antimicrobial treatment and evade host defenses. Many changes occur on its cell surface, a key location for both virulence and antibiotic resistance, but our technologies for studying these adaptive phenotypes are limited. Here we combined phage display with high-throughput DNA sequencing to create a high throughput, highly multiplexed technology for surveying bacterial …
Chromatin Expansion Microscopy Reveals Nanoscale Organization Of Transcription And Chromatin, Mark Pownall
Chromatin Expansion Microscopy Reveals Nanoscale Organization Of Transcription And Chromatin, Mark Pownall
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Nanoscale chromatin organization regulates gene expression. While chromatin is dramatically reprogrammed during zygotic genome activation (ZGA), the organization of chromatin regulatory factors during this universal process remains unclear. Here, we developed chromatin expansion microscopy (ChromExM) to visualize chromatin, transcription, and transcription factors in vivo. ChromExM of embryos during ZGA revealed how the pioneer factor Nanog interacts with nucleosomes and RNA Polymerase II (Pol II), providing direct visualization of transcriptional elongation as string-like nanostructures. Blocking elongation led to more Pol II particles clustered around Nanog, with Pol II stalled at promoters and Nanog-bound enhancers. This led to a new model termed …
The Role Of Dietary Fats In Driving Atherosclerosis, Zenan Wang
The Role Of Dietary Fats In Driving Atherosclerosis, Zenan Wang
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number one killer of people worldwide, of which coronary heart disease, which is mainly due to atherosclerosis, is the main contributor to death. Nonetheless, the etiology of atherosclerosis remains poorly understood. It is universally accepted that dietary fat influences atherosclerosis, however, the role of specific fats is not well-understood. Despite the widely-held perception that saturated fats drive atherosclerotic CVDs while monounsaturated fats are protective, there have been numerous studies from human and mice that do not fit with this prevailing narrative. Thus, despite the importance of dietary fats in CVDs, the exact effects remain controversial …
Modifying The Surface Topography Of Pegylated Nanoparticles Based On Bottlebrush Block Copolymer For Drug Delivery Applications, Julian Grundler
Modifying The Surface Topography Of Pegylated Nanoparticles Based On Bottlebrush Block Copolymer For Drug Delivery Applications, Julian Grundler
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The clinical translation of nanomedicines has been closely tied to the development ofnovel drug delivery techniques. In particular, nanoparticle formulations promise to improve the pharmacokinetics, selective accumulation at the target site, and intracellular delivery of therapeutics. Extensive research efforts have identified structure-function relationships between nanoparticle physicochemical properties (e.g. size, charge, surface functionalization) and biological fate. However, studying the biological impact of nanoparticle surface topography still remains a challenge due to the limited spatial control of conventional nanoparticle surface coatings based on hydrophilic linear polymers including poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In this dissertation, we investigated a novel method to precisely control the …
Computational Study Of The Mechanism Of Attention In Cortical Information Coding, Xiang Wang
Computational Study Of The Mechanism Of Attention In Cortical Information Coding, Xiang Wang
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The animals’ visual perception of natural scenes is influenced by both the external condi-tions of the environment and the internal states. External conditions include the contrast of the stimulus, the crowding of distractors and the complexity of visual features. Internal states include the level of arousal, the deployment of attention, and the goal of behavior. An important and extensively studied internal state is selective attention, which is thought to be critical in solving visual perception problems by increasing the saliency of the attended ob-jects against the background. Electrophysiological studies have indicated attentional modu-lation of single neurons along the hierarchy of …
Outbreak Dynamics Of Emerging Sars-Cov-2 Variants In Human And Animal Populations, Rebecca Lynn Earnest
Outbreak Dynamics Of Emerging Sars-Cov-2 Variants In Human And Animal Populations, Rebecca Lynn Earnest
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic is characterized by cycles of SARS-CoV-2 viral variant emergence followed by surges of infections and deaths. In the United States, the most notable variants to date are Alpha (B.1.1.7), Delta (B.1.617.2 and AY.x sub-lineages), and Omicron (BA.1, BA.2, BA.4, BA.5, and various sub-lineages). Pandemic response evolved along with the virus, raising three overarching research questions with each new variant that correspond to the chapters of this dissertation. When a new variant emerges, how is it different from the previously dominant variant(s) in circulation? The set of mutations that define a SARS-CoV-2 variant can affect viral properties such …
Mind Perception In Moral Judgment, Madeline G. Reinecke
Mind Perception In Moral Judgment, Madeline G. Reinecke
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Humans face a series of moral puzzles. We have to determine who (or what) matters, morally speaking. Of all the potential creatures we could care about, who should we care about? Some such judgments come easily: Babies and young children, for example, seem obvious candidates for having moral rights and deserving our protection from harm. Family and friends also seem to enjoy special moral value. Yet other determinations seem less obvious. Does an unborn fetus have the same value as a two-year-old? Does the family dog count just as much as a human relative—or is it true that humans always …

After The Criminal Justice System, Benjamin Levin
After The Criminal Justice System, Benjamin Levin
Washington Law Review
Since the 1960s, the “criminal justice system” has operated as the common label for a vast web of actors and institutions. But as critiques of mass incarceration have entered the mainstream, academics, activists, and advocates increasingly have stopped referring to the “criminal justice system.” Instead, they have opted for critical labels—the “criminal legal system,” the “criminal punishment system,” the “prison industrial complex,” and so on. What does this re-labeling accomplish? Does this change in language matter to broader efforts at criminal justice reform or abolition? Or does an emphasis on labels and language distract from substantive engagement with the injustices …

Knocking On Europe's Door: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The European Response To The 2015 Refugee Crisis And The Ukrainian Refugee Crisis, Jacob J. Mckim
Global Studies Senior Capstone
Europe is, and has long been at the center of refugee reception for many areas of the world due to its geographical position and general security. However, the European response to refugees has varied drastically in different situations. This paper examines the European response to both the 2015 Refugee Crisis and the Ukrainian Refugee Crisis. The focus being on what factors, whether political, racial, or religious, has led for some individuals to be received more favorably in Europe than others. Through examining this, the conditions for successful and long-lasting refugee reception hopefully be more clearly seen.

Intrinsic tracers, such as stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen, are common dietary markers that accumulate in the muscle tissue of consumers and can be used to determine the dietary sources and trophic positions of consumers. The aim of this study was to assess regional variation in the trophic ecology of wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) using bulk stable isotopes. Muscle biopsies of wahoo were collected from four regions in the western Atlantic Ocean: the eastern Gulf of Mexico, western Gulf of Mexico, Northwest Atlantic Ocean, and Caribbean Sea. Muscle tissue δ13C and δ15N values for wahoo ranged …
The Role Of Intercultural Communication In Recruiting And Retaining Student-Athletes: A Phenomenological Study On Understanding The Sociocultural Aspects Of Building Non-Revenue Teams In Intercollegiate Sport, Eva Rouser
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Recruiting and retaining student-athletes at NCAA Division I and II member institutions is difficult. However, the coaches of non-revenue-producing sport have developed communication measures to assist in successfully fielding teams of culturally unique individuals that build an ingroup culture to compete despite limiting factors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the lived experience of non-revenue-producing sporting coaches’ intercultural communication methodical variations in interactions with student-athletes as each coach adapts exchanges to serve as relationship-building elements to balance cultural norms with the acceptance of unfamiliar cultural behaviors. Relevant themes emerged from the data gathered during participant interviews, …

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
Prior research underscores a need for applying theoretical frameworks to understand the factors influencing diverse populations’ organic food purchase intentions. The objectives of this study are threefold. First, we evaluate the applicability of the information–motivation–behavioral skills model for predicting organic food purchase intention in adults with chronic conditions. Second, we examine the indirect effects of organic food knowledge, attitudes toward organic food purchase, and subjective norms on purchase intention through self-efficacy. Third, we examine whether these indirect effects are moderated by gender and educational attainment. Data were collected from Indian adults with chronic conditions using a self-administered questionnaire. The results …

Stephen J. Gould’s prophetic piece, “The Golden Rule: A Proper Scale for Our Environmental Crisis”, noted that, “Patience enjoys a long pedigree of favor”, which he elaborated, “usually involves a deep understanding of the fundamental principle… rarely grasped in daily life – the effects of scale.” Scientists observe changes incessantly, in dimensions and time, from microscopic conditions of cellular biology to the inconceivable distances of galaxies and their influences on Earth.

BACKGROUND: Patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) aims to assist with tailoring decisions to an individual patient's needs. Patient-generated health data (PGHD), including physiologic measurements captured frequently by automated devices, provide important information for PC CDS. The volume and availability of such PGHD is increasing, but how PGHD should be presented to clinicians to best aid decision-making is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: Identify best practices in visualizations of physiologic PGHD, for designing a software application as a PC CDS tool.
METHODS: We performed a scoping review of studies of PGHD dashboards that involved clinician users in design or evaluations. We included only …
Redefining “No Evidence Of A Breach” In Election Security, Yunsieg P. Kim
Redefining “No Evidence Of A Breach” In Election Security, Yunsieg P. Kim
SMU Law Review Forum
For legal purposes, we rightly understand the lack of evidence to mean a lack of existence. For example, many candidates in the 2022 elections baselessly claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. But, absent evidence of systemic fraud, the law correctly determines that President Biden was duly elected. If the law entertained any outlandish assertion regardless of evidentiary support, accusers could peddle whatever claims they please, forcing the accused to disprove them. Similar to the legal understanding of “no evidence,” many appear to believe that no evidence of a security breach in our voting equipment indicates no breach. For …
