Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
Amidst the pandemic, millions of impoverished Filipinos lack sufficient access to sanitation services that protect them from bacterial infections. As such, this study endeavored to formulate a disinfectant spray of hydrogen peroxide and varying concentrations of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) essential oils to produce a maximally effective solution. Due to their natural origin, these essential oils were chosen for their extensive antibacterial properties, affordable price, and low toxicity levels. Six disinfectant spray solutions containing different concentrations of either essential oil were tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria through the agar disk diffusion method. After analyzing …

Systematic Literature Review Of Diffusion Coefficient Studies For Pharmaceutically-Active Compounds, Gerard Daniel L. Gonzales, Rachel Leah V. Luzano, David Bryan G. Unabia, Victoria Gail N. Vasco, Allan N. Soriano
Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
Pharmaceutically-active compounds (PHACs) such as analgesics, antibiotics, hormones, and antiseptics have been proven beneficial to human life as they can cure illnesses and increase life expectancy. However, heightened usage has led to their emergence in various bodies of water. This has negatively impacted humankind and the environment due to these compounds’ toxicity levels and adverse health effects on living organisms. Therefore, this systematic literature review evaluated the existing literature on the diffusion coefficients of various PHACs. The diffusion coefficient of these compounds serves as a parameter that measures their transport through hydrological mediums and is inversely proportional to molecular size. …

Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPDII) is caused by biallelic loss-of-function variants in pericentrin (PCNT), and premature coronary artery disease (CAD) is a complication of the syndrome. Histopathology of coronary arteries from patients with MOPDII who died of CAD in their 20s showed extensive atherosclerosis. Hyperlipidemic mice with smooth muscle cell-specific (SMC-specific) Pcnt deficiency (PcntSMC-/-) exhibited significantly greater atherosclerotic plaque burden compared with similarly treated littermate controls despite similar serum lipid levels. Loss of PCNT in SMCs induced activation of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and consequently upregulated the expression and activity of HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), the rate-limiting enzyme …

Voltage- And Calcium-Gated Membrane Currents Tune The Plateau Potential Properties Of Multiple Neuron Types, Curtis L Neveu, Paul Smolen, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Many neurons exhibit regular firing that is limited to the duration and intensity of depolarizing stimuli. However, some neurons exhibit all-or-nothing plateau potentials that, once elicited, can lead to prolonged activity that is independent of stimulus intensity or duration. To better understand this diversity of information processing, we compared the voltage-gated and Ca2+-gated currents of three identified neurons from hermaphroditic Aplysia californica. Two of these neurons, B51 and B64, generated plateau potentials and a third neuron, B8, exhibited regular firing and was incapable of generating a plateau potential. With the exception of the Ca2+-gated potassium …

The Drosophila eye is a powerful model system to study the dynamics of cell differentiation, cell state transitions, cell maturation, and pattern formation. However, a high-resolution single cell genomics resource that accurately profiles all major cell types of the larval eye disc and their spatiotemporal relationships is lacking. Here, we report transcriptomic and chromatin accessibility data for all known cell types in the developing eye. Photoreceptors appear as strands of cells that represent their dynamic developmental timelines. As photoreceptor subtypes mature, they appear to assume a common transcriptomic profile that is dominated by genes involved in axon function. We identify …

Plant Diversity Patterns Along Altitudinal Gradient In Understory Communities Of Darkesh Region, Bojnord, Iran, A. Arjmandi, H. Ejtehadi, F. Memariani, Mansour Mesdaghi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The ecotone region of Darkesh with an area of 22,500 hectares is located in the Irano-Turanian xeric-continental bioclimatic zone of Khorassan-Kopet Dagh. To investigate the plant diversity patterns of understory communities along three elevation classes of 1100-1600, 1600-2100, and 2100-2600 m, 187 plots were sampled randomly and abundance and cover of species were recorded using 4-m2 plots. Beta diversity and Hill indices were calculated by using R and PAST software. A total of 252 species were recorded including 31 perennial grasses. The most abundant grasses were Poa nemoralis, Poa bulbosa, Bromus sterilis, Brachypodium sylvaticum, and Dactylis glomerata subsp. glomerata …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Salinity stress is one of the most damaging stresses in crop plants. It reduces the productivity of the soil and makes it unsuitable for crop cultivation. Fodder crops are considered the best alternative in such uncultivable land. Using salinity-affected land for pasture development is the best alternative to utilize such lands. However, the extent of salinity tolerance varies among different grass species. In this study, Pearl millet Napier hybrids (PMN hybrid) and guinea grass varieties were studied for salinity tolerance in artificially created saline soils in the ratio of 13:7:1:2 (NaCl: Na2SO4: MgCl: CaSO4, …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Climate change has decreased rainfall in Southern Chile affecting the productivity of the grasslands that sustain the dairy and beef cattle industries. These grasslands are mainly mixtures of Lolium perenne L. and Trifolium repens L. Thus, we study the response on the establishment of a mixture of these two species to three levels of soil water content and two levels of nitrogen (N) fertilization. The trial was carried out in containers sowed in a complete randomized block´s design. Soil moisture measurements were taken daily. N fertilizations was applied at the establishment and every 60 days. Leaf appearance rate was measured …

Impact Of Level Of Use On Plant Vigor And Weight Of Festuca Humilior And Calamagrostis Vicunarum, T. Edson, L. Aguirre, E. R. Flores
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Tussock grasslands of Festuca humilior and Calamagrostis vicunarum cover a significant extension of the central Andes of Peru, constituting a plant association highly appreciated by cattle ranchers. The objective of this research was to estimate the cumulative impact of the level of use of the key grasses Festuca humilior and Calamagrostis vicunarum on plant height, vigor, and weight. This study was conducted in a humid grassland of regular condition located at 4186 masl in the Puna ecoregion. The variables evaluated were: plant height, basal and canopy diameter and plant weight. The experiment lasted two years in which individual plants from …

The Dragon Is Not An Allegory: Reading Tolkien’S Monsters In Medieval Contexts, Cait Coker, Ruthann Mowry
Journal of Tolkien Research
In his letters, J.R.R. Tolkien stated both that he considered LOTR “a fundamentally religious and Catholic work” (no. 172) but that he considered the work “built on or out of certain ‘religious’ ideas, but is not an allegory of them (or anything else)” (no. 283). However, Tolkien was also a medievalist, and understood that texts always contained a multitude of readings as documentary objects that were kept and used in specific ways. Creatures and imagery contained in medieval books provided
information to the reader, as when bestiaries explicate fauna with attributes both real and metaphysical. They thus combine fiction and …

Tolkien's Tevildo - Of Fables, Rings And Cats, Polina Svadkovskaia
Tolkien's Tevildo - Of Fables, Rings And Cats, Polina Svadkovskaia
Journal of Tolkien Research
The article explores Tolkien's process of deconstructing two medieval beast fable narratives in his creation of Tevildo, Prince of Cats, whereby he strategically aligns the feline with malevolence. It further posits that the magic of the One Ring is presented preliminarily in The Tale of Tinúviel in two forms: Tevildo's golden collar and the enchantment he uses to control other cats. Tevildo is thus endowed with tokens of villainy reminiscent of Sauron's: however, the cat fails at projecting fear due to the underlying moralistic element of the story and the fragmentation of the magic his power relies upon.
From Classical To Medieval: A Reflection On Bats In Tolkien’S Works, Fiammetta Comelli
From Classical To Medieval: A Reflection On Bats In Tolkien’S Works, Fiammetta Comelli
Journal of Tolkien Research
This paper intends to analyse the representation and narrative function of the bat in Tolkienian cosmology, in Middle-earth and beyond. Although, at first glance, it appears to be a secondary animal, it actually proves to be a constant and, as we will attempt to highlight, a significant presence. Along with diachronic survey of classical, medieval and, in part, Gothic literature sources - which allows us to reconstruct the formation of a precise West European negative imagery of the animal, to which Tolkien refers - we will then attempt to argue how the bat is often employed as a mirror image, …
The Deer-Maid Motif In The Children Of Húrin, Kris Swank
The Deer-Maid Motif In The Children Of Húrin, Kris Swank
Journal of Tolkien Research
The story of Túrin Turambar goes back to the end of the First World War, and Tolkien continued to work on it through the 1950s. Later versions repeatedly describe Túrin’s sister Niënor figuratively—as or like—a hunted deer, especially after her enchantment by the dragon Glaurung. Tolkien identified Sigurd the Volsung, Oedipus, and the Finnish Kullervo as sources for Túrin, however, the motif of a maiden enchanted as a deer does not derive from those sources. The Irish story of Oisín’s mother, Sadhbh or Saav, who was transformed into a fawn by an evil druid, shares several analogous …
Sam's Song In The Tower: The Significance Of 'Merry Finches' In J.R.R. Tolkien's _Lord Of The Rings_, Jane Beal Phd
Sam's Song In The Tower: The Significance Of 'Merry Finches' In J.R.R. Tolkien's _Lord Of The Rings_, Jane Beal Phd
Journal of Tolkien Research
In The Lord of the Rings, Samwise Gamgee climbs the Tower of Cirith Ungol to try to rescue his master and friend, Frodo Baggins, who has been taken captive by Orcs. When Sam is near despair because he cannot find Frodo, Sam sings a song that makes reference to “merry finches.” What is the significance of this phrase in his lyrics? To answer this question, my essay first explores J.R.R. Tolkien’s ornithological knowledge, especially of finches in England, which is readily demonstrated from a letter he wrote to his son, Christopher Tolkien (July 7, 1944), about his observations of bullfinches …

"Tolkien's Eagles: Aves Ex Machina", Deidre Dawson
Journal of Tolkien Research
Many studies of Tolkien’s Eagles have emphasized their role as a narrative device (the deus ex machina) or spiritual symbol and have focused primarily on their intervention in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This essay argues for a more comprehensive interpretation, and demonstrates that the Eagles function as essential characters throughout Tolkien’s legendarium, beginning with the earliest stories. The importance of eagles in mythology, folklore and literature is highlighted to show how Tolkien combined his deep knowledge of these subjects with his attention to the biology and anatomy of actual eagles to create his own …
Of Foxes, Dancing Bears, And Wolves, John Rosegrant
Of Foxes, Dancing Bears, And Wolves, John Rosegrant
Journal of Tolkien Research
When in “On Fairy-stories” Tolkien expressed his Faërian wish to understand the proper speech of animals, he was longing to relate with animals in a way that combined communion with them and respect for their separate natures. But the exuberance with which Tolkien expressed this wish changed over time. His early writings are rampant with talking animals and other forms of human-animal condensation in which the animals nevertheless retain their own agency; later in life he grew uneasy with what he now believed to be unrealistic and un-Catholic formulations. Nevertheless, the Faërian wish was so important to him that he …
