Glioblastoma (GBM), an adult-type diffuse grade 4 glioma (IDH wild type), is the most prevalent, aggressive, fatal, highly vascularized, malignant primary brain tumour in adults with a poor prognosis. Despite existing therapies such as surgical resection, radiation therapy and chemotherapy such as temozolomide (TMZ), patient survival remains largely unchanged over the last three decades. There is an urgent need for novel and effective therapeutic strategies that can overcome drug resistance, cross the blood brain barrier, and minimise off-target side effects that can negatively impact a patient's quality of life. The high failure rate of clinical trials is due to inefficient …

Impact Of Microwave Synthesis Time On The Shape Of Silver Nanostructures And Their Antibacterial Activity, Nhat Hieu Hoang, Van Nghia Nguyen, Thi Tho Nguyen, Thi Mong Diep Nguyen
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Silver is a well-known effective antibacterial and disinfectant material with relatively few side effects. Nanosilver derived from it, have strong antibacterial, antifungal and broad-spectrum antiviral properties. This study describes how the microwave synthesis durations of silver nanoparticles affect their shape, and the effect of the shapes of these nanoparticles on their antibacterial activity. The optical properties of the nanosilver were examined through UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The morphology of the grain was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the crystallinity of the nanosilver was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The antibacterial activities were assessed using bacterial pathogens Bacillus cereus and …

Mechanical Behavior And Physicochemical Modifications In Lignosulfonate-Treated Fique (Furcraea Andina) Fibers, Beatriz Dantas Lourenço Da Silva, Paula Lage Agrize, Betina Carvalho Veiga, Lucio Fabio Cassiano Nascimento, Camila Aparecida Abelha Rocha, Fábio De Oliveira Braga
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
One of the most frequent problems in biocomposites is the physical/chemical incompatibility between natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLF) and the matrix. Physical and/or chemical treatments are the most common approach to improve interface properties. Seeking for environmentally friendly treatments, lignosulfonates (LSs) have been considered for surface modification of NLF due to their amphiphilic properties. Thus, the objective of the present work is to evaluate the influence of sodium LS (SLS) treatment protocols in the properties and mechanical behavior of fique (Furcraea Andina) fibers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric (TGA) and spectroscopic (FTIR) analyzes were performed, as well as optical microscopy, …

Enhancing The Color Shade And Depth Of Linen Fabrics Dyed With Caesalpinia Sappan L. Wood Extract Using Metallic Salt Mordants, Thanika Hutakamol, Penwisa Pisitsak, Sarida Thongmee, Sinuntorn Srijanand, Thankamol Somrus
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
This study demonstrated natural dyeing of linen with a dye extracted from sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.). Four metallic salt mordants, namely (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2, CuSO4, SnCl2, and AlK(SO4)2, referred to as Fe, Cu, Sn, and Al, respectively, were used to improve the dyeing properties. The influences of the pH, dye concentration, mordant type and concentration, and mordanting technique on the dyeing properties were investigated. Dyeing without mordants resulted in a reddish-brown fabric; however, different mordants produced a variety of color shades. In general, the mordant containing Fe yielded the highest color strength, generating a dark gray color very close to black. …
Enforcing Soft Law In International Investment Arbitration, Vera Korzun
Enforcing Soft Law In International Investment Arbitration, Vera Korzun
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Drawing examples from international environmental law, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility, this Article examines the evolving role of international investment arbitration in the enforcement of non-binding soft law rules of international law. In doing so, the Article explains how investment tribunals can, and have been called upon to, interpret and, paradoxically, enforce soft law instruments. The Article calls for reevaluation of the nature of soft law and the role of investor-state dispute settlement in international rulemaking and enforcement. It also argues that for international environmental law and law on sustainable development, where the lack of an enforcement mechanism has …

"Variety": A Look At Several Genres, Ryan Dean Carlin
Honors Program Theses
This thesis was made to both explore the impact on a writer’s mind and thoughts that writing different genres could cause, as well as stretch the limits of creativity that any one writer can bring about. The following stories are the result of a single writer’s efforts. Following them will be the writer’s own observations about his approach as he wrote each, as well as any ways that the restrictions of the genre stumped his attempts at writing. Each work is no fewer than ten pages, and each story attempts to stretch the boundaries of writing and imagination through unique …
Developing The Lex Mercatoria, Tiong Min Yeo
Developing The Lex Mercatoria, Tiong Min Yeo
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The historical lex mercatoria, or law merchant, is said to have emerged from the customary practices of ancient and medieval seamen and traders who found themselves in need of a common set of rules to govern mercantile trade; rules which would be broadly applicable (and acceptable) to trading parties regardless of their places of origin. To the extent that such a body of legal rules did in fact exist, its significance derived from two main features: (1) its independence (since it was not promulgated by any one decision-maker or legislator, but was drawn from the established practice of the merchant …

Disclosing The Ministerial Exception, Stefan M. Mcdaniel
Disclosing The Ministerial Exception, Stefan M. Mcdaniel

From the Article
The Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed the existence of the so-called "ministerial exception" religious organizations' constitutionally based immunity from employment discrimination suits brought by their ministers but declined to provide a clear test for which employees count as "ministers." The Court's reticence is frustrating but understandable. A narrow definition might wrongfully burden or interfere with religion generally, privilege some religions over others, or increase friction in a society riven by ethical disagreements. A broad definition might privilege religious over non-religious employers or facilitate evasion of generally applicable law, contrary to compelling public policies and the vital interests …
Banning Autonomous Weapons: A Legal And Ethical Mandate, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Banning Autonomous Weapons: A Legal And Ethical Mandate, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Journal Articles
From the Introduction
The ongoing debate over the law and ethics of lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) reflects two very different perspectives. One sees the development of such weapons as an essential part of national security that depends on a strong military in possession of the latest weapons technology. If legal or ethical norms impede staying ahead in the race for new weapons, those norms need to be reinterpreted or modified. The other perspective maintains that security depends first and foremost on robust respect for legal principles that are derived from fundamental moral principles. Such principles are not subject to …

Justice Breyer And The Establishment Clause: Notes On "Appeasement," "Legal Judgment," And "Divisiveness", Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
Stephen G. Breyer served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States for nearly three decades. And yet, during his long career and notwithstanding his wide-ranging interests, he never authored a majority opinion resolving a dispute about the meaning of that Amendment’s Establishment Clause. Nevertheless, Justice Breyer’s writings and record regarding the no-establishment rule are distinctive in at least three ways.
First, there is the fact that he did not vote uniformly with his more secularist colleagues in divided Establishment Clause cases. That is, he often resisted the stricter applications of the no-establishment rule endorsed by …

Earth's Critical Zone (CZ), the near-surface layer where rock is weathered and landscapes co-evolve with life, is profoundly influenced by the type of underlying bedrock. Previous studies employing the CZ framework have focused primarily on landscapes dominated by silicate rocks. However, carbonate rocks crop out on approximately 15% of Earth's ice-free continental surface and provide important water resources and ecosystem services to ∼1.2 billion people. Unlike silicates, carbonate minerals weather congruently and have high solubilities and rapid dissolution kinetics, enabling the development of large, interconnected pore spaces and preferential flow paths that restructure the CZ. Here we review the state …

In the 21st century, the effects of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) have been significantly reduced in individuals due to the development of antiretroviral therapies (ARTs). However, the growing epidemic of polysubstance use (PSU) has led to concern for the effects of PSU on HIV-seropositive individuals. To effectively treat individuals affected by HAND, it is critical to understand the biological mechanisms affected by PSU, including the identification of novel markers. To fill this important knowledge gap, we used an in vivo HIV-1 Transgenic (HIV-1 Tg) animal model to investigate the effects of the combined use of chronic methamphetamine (METH) and oxycodone …

Maternal opioid use poses a significant health concern not just to the expectant mother but also to the fetus. Notably, increasing numbers of children born suffering from neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) further compounds the crisis. While epidemiological research has shown the heightened risk factors associated with NOWS, little research has investigated what molecular mechanisms underly the vulnerabilities these children carry throughout development and into later life. To understand the implications of in utero and post-natal opioid exposure on the developing brain, we sought to assess the response to one of the most common pediatric injuries: minor traumatic brain injury …

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in women worldwide. It has surpassed lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer-related death. Breast cancer brain metastasis (BCBM) is becoming a major clinical concern that is commonly associated with ER-ve and HER2+ve subtypes of BC patients. Metastatic lesions in the brain originate when the cancer cells detach from a primary breast tumor and establish metastatic lesions and infiltrate near and distant organs via systemic blood circulation by traversing the BBB. The colonization of BC cells in the brain involves a complex interplay in the tumor microenvironment (TME), …

BACKGROUND: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive lung cancer subtype that is associated with high recurrence and poor prognosis. Due to lack of potential drug targets, SCLC patients have few therapeutic options. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) provide an interesting repertoire of therapeutic molecules; however, the identification of miRNAs regulating SCLC growth and metastasis and their precise regulatory mechanisms are not well understood.
METHODS: To identify novel miRNAs regulating SCLC, we performed miRNA-sequencing from donor/patient serum samples and analyzed the bulk RNA-sequencing data from the tumors of SCLC patients. Further, we developed a nanotechnology-based, highly sensitive method to detect microRNA-1 (miR-1, …

Poor visualization of polyps can limit colorectal cancer screening. Fluorescent antibodies to mucin5AC (MUC5AC), a glycoprotein upregulated in adenomas and colorectal cancer, could improve screening colonoscopy polyp detection rate. Adenomatous polyposis coli flox mice with a Cdx2-Cre transgene (CPC-APC) develop colonic polyps that contain both dysplastic and malignant tissue. Mice received MUC5AC-IR800 or IRdye800 as a control IV and were sacrificed after 48 h for near-infrared imaging of their colons. A polyp-to-background ratio (PBR) was calculated for each polyp by dividing the mean fluorescence intensity of the polyp by the mean fluorescence intensity of the background tissue. The mean 25 …

Membrane-associated mucins (MAMs) are proposed to play critical roles at the ocular surface; however, in vivo evidence has been lacking. Here we investigate these roles by phenotyping of a Muc4 KO mouse. Histochemical analysis for expression of the beta-galactosidase transgene replacing Muc4 revealed a spiraling ribbon pattern across the corneal epithelium, consistent with centripetal cell migration from the limbus. Depletion of Muc4 compromised transcellular barrier function, as evidenced by an increase in rose bengal staining. In addition, the corneal surface was less smooth, consistent with disruption of tear film stability. While surface cells presented with well-developed microprojections, an increase in …

Aberrantly expressed onco-mucin 16 (MUC16) and its post-cleavage generated surface tethered carboxy-terminal (MUC16-Cter) domain are strongly associated with poor prognosis and lethality of pancreatic (PC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). To date, most anti-MUC16 antibodies are directed towards the extracellular domain of MUC16 (CA125), which is usually cleaved and shed in the circulation hence obscuring antibody accessibility to the cancer cells. Herein, we establish the utility of targeting a post-cleavage generated, surface-tethered oncogenic MUC16 carboxy-terminal (MUC16-Cter) domain by using a novel chimeric antibody in human IgG1 format, ch5E6, whose epitope expression directly correlates with disease severity in both cancers. …

Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and can potentially prevent IBD through microbial-derived metabolites, making it a promising therapeutic avenue. Recent evidence suggests that despite an unclear underlying mechanism, red cabbage juice (RCJ) alleviates Dextran Sodium Sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Thus, the study aims to unravel the molecular mechanism by which RCJ modulates the gut microbiota to alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice. Using C57BL/6J mice, we evaluated RCJ's protective role in DSS-induced colitis through two cycles of 3% DSS. Mice were daily gavaged with PBS or RCJ until the endpoint, and gut microbiota composition …

Background
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by exposure to traumatic events in an individual’s life. Patients with PTSD are also at a higher risk for comorbidities. However, it is not well understood how PTSD affects human health and/or promotes the risk for comorbidities. Nevertheless, patients with PTSD harbor a proinflammatory milieu and dysbiotic gut microbiota. Gut barrier integrity helps to maintain normal gut homeostasis and its dysregulation promotes gut dysbiosis and inflammation.
Methods
We used a mouse model of repeated social defeat stress (RSDS), a preclinical model of PTSD. Behavioral studies, metagenomics analysis of the …

Carotid body pathophysiology is associated with many cardiovascular-respiratory-metabolic diseases. This pathophysiology reflects both hyper-sensitivity and hyper-tonicity. From both animal models and human patients, evidence indicates that amelioration of this pathophysiological signalling improves disease states such as a lowering of blood pressure in hypertension, a reduction of breathing disturbances with improved cardiac function in heart failure (HF) and a re-balancing of autonomic activity with lowered sympathetic discharge. Given this, we have reviewed the mechanisms of carotid body hyper-sensitivity and hyper-tonicity across disease models asking whether there is uniqueness related to specific disease states. Our analysis indicates some commonalities and some potential …
