Divergent Representations Of Africa: A Qualitative Analysis Of Georgia Social Studies Textbooks, Bailey A. Brown, Amber R. Reed Jan 2023

Divergent Representations Of Africa: A Qualitative Analysis Of Georgia Social Studies Textbooks, Bailey A. Brown, Amber R. Reed

Georgia Educational Researcher

The Georgia Department of Education has clearly defined standards for learning about Africa in the seventh grade. However, there exists great variation in how textbooks present this material and address these standards. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, we assess the presentation of Africa in three widely used Georgia social studies textbooks. We document and analyze coverage of Africa across Georgia’s seventh grade world studies learning domains. Our research demonstrates: 1) that, despite widespread calls for decolonization of education and strengthening of multicultural education, Euro-American perspectives on Africa are still prevalent; 2) textbooks vary widely on how they choose to …

Plant Sentience? Between Romanticism And Denial: Science, Miguel Segundo-Ortin, Paco Calvo Jan 2023

Plant Sentience? Between Romanticism And Denial: Science, Miguel Segundo-Ortin, Paco Calvo

Animal Sentience

A growing number of non-human animal species are being seriously considered as candidates for sentience, but plants are either forgotten or explicitly excluded from these debates. In our view, this is based on the belief that plant behavior is hardwired and inflexible and on an underestimation of the role of plant electrophysiology. We weigh such assumptions against the evidence to suggest that it is time to take seriously the hypothesis that plants, too, might be sentient. We hope this target article will serve as an invitation to investigate sentience in plants with the same rigor as in non-human animals.

Masking Vulnerability: Including Ppe As A Covered Service In Health Insurance, Mary Leto Pareja Jan 2023

Masking Vulnerability: Including Ppe As A Covered Service In Health Insurance, Mary Leto Pareja

Nebraska Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the shared vulnerability inherent in the human condition, prompting a collective recognition of our physical susceptibility to infectious diseases. While great strides have been made in combating COVID-19 through vaccinations and treatments, a portion of the population remains profoundly vulnerable due to health conditions that make the disease more dangerous, that limit vaccine efficacy, or that prevent vaccination altogether.

This article explores a path forward by proposing a solution within health benefit plans—encompassing both private health insurance and public health benefits. Specifically, the article advocates for a coverage mandate for over-the-counter personal protective equipment (PPE) …

Downstream Interests In Agriculture: The Clean Water Act’S Failure To Adequately Address Nonpoint Source Pollution, Christopher Berg Jan 2023

Downstream Interests In Agriculture: The Clean Water Act’S Failure To Adequately Address Nonpoint Source Pollution, Christopher Berg

Nebraska Law Review

Agricultural runoff is a major source of nonpoint pollution in the U.S., where portions of fertilizer are carried away as runoff before polluting navigable waters. Commercial fertilizers containing heavy concentrations of nitrate and phosphate are the dominant source of nonpoint pollution. In 1972, the Clean Water Act (CWA) was implemented to protect navigable waters from discharges of point source pollutants. However, currently there are only limited provisions regarding nonpoint source pollution. Instead, regulation is left to the states through a variety of voluntary management programs. To properly address nonpoint source pollution, the CWA needs additional amendments that focus on more …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized linguistically by gradual loss of repetition and naming skills resulting from left posterior temporal and inferior parietal atrophy. Here, we sought to identify which specific cortical loci are initially targeted by the disease (epicenters) and investigate whether atrophy spreads through predetermined networks. First, we used cross-sectional structural MRI data from individuals with lvPPA to define putative disease epicenters using a surface-based approach paired with an anatomically fine-grained parcellation of the cortical surface (i.e., HCP-MMP1.0 atlas). Second, we combined cross-sectional functional MRI data from healthy controls and longitudinal …

Masks, Misinformation, And Making Do: Appalachian Health-Care Workers And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Wendy Welch Jan 2023

Masks, Misinformation, And Making Do: Appalachian Health-Care Workers And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Wendy Welch

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

The firsthand pandemic experiences of rural health-care providers—who were already burdened when COVID-19 hit—raise questions about the future of public health and health-care delivery.

This volume comprises the COVID-19 pandemic experiences of Appalachian health-care workers, including frontline providers, administrators, and educators. The combined narrative reveals how governmental and corporate policies exacerbated the region’s injustices, stymied response efforts, and increased the death toll.

Beginning with an overview of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its impact on the body, the essays in the book’s first section provide background material and contextualize the subsequent explosion of telemedicine, the pandemic’s impact on medical education, and …

Articles

Empirical interdisciplinary research has explored the role of spatial ability in STEM learning and achievement. While most of this research indicates that fostering spatial thinking in educational contexts has the potential to positively impact students’ enrollment and performance in STEM subjects, there is less agreement on the best approach to do so. This article provides an overview of various types of effective spatial interventions and practices in formal or informal educational contexts, including targeted training of STEM-relevant spatial skills, spatialized curricula embedded in schools, integrated STEM practices addressing students’ use of spatial skills, and spatial activities in informal STEM education. …

A Comparison Of Virtual Vs. Traditional Cycling Exercise On Perceived Duration And Exercise Enjoyment, Kyle W. Reason

Dissertations

We compared perceived duration, ratings of enjoyment and RPE between virtual vs. standard cycling. Participants completed a VO2 peak test and four counterbalanced trials (two 20-min, two 40-min) one at each duration on the interactive Expresso bike (EXP) and a workload matched trial on a Velotron (VEL). Acute RPE were assessed every 5-min. Perceived duration (min) and exercise enjoyment were assessed 15-min post. No significant differences were found for perceived duration between trials (SDE 23.9 ± 8.4; SDV 27.1 ± 9.6; LDE 40.0 ± 12.1; LDV 38.9 ± 10.8). For long duration expresso (LDE) RPE-overall were significantly lower at 25, …

Comprehensive Genomic Characterization Of Cronobacter Sakazakii Isolates From Infant Formula Processing Facilities Using Whole-Genome Sequencing, Zeinab E.Mousavi, Leonard Koolman, Guerrino Macori, Séamus Fanning, Francis Butler, University College Dublin

Articles

Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic pathogen linked to outbreaks in powdered infant formula (PIF), primarily causing meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to characterize 18 C. sakazakii strains isolated from PIF (powdered infant formula) manufacturing plants (2011–2015). Sequence Type (ST) 1 was identified as the dominant sequence type, and all isolates carried virulence genes for chemotaxis, flagellar motion, and heat shock proteins. Multiple antibiotic resistance genes were detected, with all isolates exhibiting resistance to Cephalosporins and Tetracycline. A significant correlation existed between genotypic and phenotypic antibiotic resistance. The plasmid Col(pHAD28) was identified in the isolates recovered from …

Johnson V. M’Intosh: 200 Years Of Racism That Runs With The Land, Sheila Simon

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The United States Supreme Court case of Johnson v. M’Intosh is a foundation of property law in the United States. It established the United States government as the only possible buyer of land from people native to the continent. As the only possible buyer, the United States government had the power to negotiate a low purchase price. The bargain basement purchases are at the root of title for most of the property in the western half of the country. The case also forms an early and critical component of many property law textbooks. The case can be used to introduce …

The Major Questions Doctrine And The Threat To Regulating Emerging Technologies, Johnson, Walter G., Tournas, Lucille M. Jan 2023

The Major Questions Doctrine And The Threat To Regulating Emerging Technologies, Johnson, Walter G., Tournas, Lucille M.

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

Emerging technologies offer the potential to improve health and quality of life but also pose notable risks to safety, wellbeing, and equity. Law and technology scholarship posits that robust policy and regulatory strategies in the public interest are required to manage these complex benefits, risks, and uncertainties. At the same time, the Supreme Court in its recent jurisprudence appears eager to revitalize nondelegation legal norms, especially through the major questions doctrine—a shifting administrative law doctrine that increasingly appears to act as a clear statement rule when interpreting statutory grants of authority to regulatory agencies. This article argues the major questions …

Tlr4 Adjuvanted Vaccine Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Virulence Factor, Pf Bacteriophage, Induces Increased Immunoglobulin Response And Highly Mutated Antigen-Specific B-Cell Receptors, Valery Cristina Roman-Cruz

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is listed as a priority 1 pathogen by the World Health Organization. Although this Gram-negative bacterium is ubiquitous and can naturally be found in the environment, it is opportunistic. P. aeruginosa has a wide range of host immune evasion strategies; one such strategy is the establishment of biofilms. Pf bacteriophage, a P. aeruginosa virulence factor, can strengthen the integrity of biofilms and can also misdirect the host immune response from an appropriate anti-bacterial response to an anti-viral response. Previous studies have established that antibodies against Pf bacteriophage can enhance clearance of P. aeruginosa infections. Next generation adjuvants such …

A Biophysical Approach To Modeling Elevational Range Shifts In Colorado Mammal Communities, Ryan T. Mahar Jan 2023

A Biophysical Approach To Modeling Elevational Range Shifts In Colorado Mammal Communities, Ryan T. Mahar

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Species geographic ranges are shifting in the face of contemporary climate warming, and documenting range shifts is crucial to our understanding of the underlying drivers mediating movement in geographic range limits. Studies on elevational range shifts with climate change are beginning to accrue within the literature, though observed shifts are idiosyncratic and difficult to predict. Some species may respond to warming temperatures by shifting their range limits upslope, where temperatures are cooler owing to the adiabatic lapse rate. However, species may also respond to warming temperatures in an elevation-dependent manner: if changes in snow depth expose overwintering organisms to colder …

Life After Ice: Ecology Of Mountain Lakes Across Glacial And Elevation Gradients, Joseph William Vanderwall Jan 2023

Life After Ice: Ecology Of Mountain Lakes Across Glacial And Elevation Gradients, Joseph William Vanderwall

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Conceptual models of primary succession in lakes often do not match with empirical data. New lakes arising in mountain regions due to the loss of alpine glaciers offer an opportunity to study newly forming lakes. In addition to the loss of alpine glaciers, mountain lakes are currently experiencing rapid changes, including increased vegetation cover, variable snowpack, and increased nutrient deposition. In this dissertation, I used glacial and elevation gradients to investigate the ecology and biogeochemistry of early lakes and how they may change through time. The first chapter details the glacial gradient and shows that early lakes dominated by glacial …
