Epidemiology Of Human Hookworm (Necator Americanus) Infection In Rural Ghana: Investigating Host-Parasite Factors That Mediate Infection, Savanna Randi Jan 2023

Epidemiology Of Human Hookworm (Necator Americanus) Infection In Rural Ghana: Investigating Host-Parasite Factors That Mediate Infection, Savanna Randi

Public Health Theses

Abstract

Introduction: Hookworms are soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) that cause significant morbidity in high-risk populations, posing a global health concern in locations of rural poverty [1-5]. While there have been ventures by the World Health Organization to eliminate hookworms in Africa by 2030, there is variability in the effectiveness of current chemotherapy regimens. Studies have shown that benzimidazole anthelmintics have reduced effectiveness, and people living in endemic areas are quickly reinfected [6]. Critical gaps remain in understanding parasite-host interactions within communities, further challenging successful disease control. A study initiated in 2022 investigated the epidemiology of human hookworm infection in Beposo, Ghana. …

Missing The Forest For The Trees: The Causes Of The Obesity Epidemic, Acree Mcdowell Cook Jan 2023

Missing The Forest For The Trees: The Causes Of The Obesity Epidemic, Acree Mcdowell Cook

Public Health Theses

Arguably the most pressing public health issue in the United States today is the obesity epidemic, which has affected children, adolescents, and adults alike. A lack of longitudinal research on distinct factors related to obesity in different groups has made addressing the epidemic difficult. Many lifestyle and environmental factors, including nutrition, sleep, stress, the gut microbiome, screen time, and marketing, are all related to obesity, but many of these factors are also related to each other. The current study investigates these systemic relationships, presents a hypothesis on the complementary causes of obesity, and contributes to contemporary longitudinal research by investigating …

Characterizing Populations Living Near Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Implications For Health Equity And Environmental Justice, Leah Salzano Jan 2023

Characterizing Populations Living Near Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Implications For Health Equity And Environmental Justice, Leah Salzano

Public Health Theses

Current literature has highlighted that concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOS) are associated with adverse health outcomes among populations living in close proximity to the farms and that, in certain states, vulnerable populations may be disproportionately exposed to CAFOs. However, none of the existing studies have assessed the sociodemographic makeup of areas highly exposed to CAFOs across a diverse geographic range. Using locations of CAFOs across six states with robust operations, we conducted logistic regression models assessing the likelihood of high exposure vs. low exposure at the census tract level for each 10% increase in sociodemographic variables (percent unemployed, percent minority, …

Examining The Impacts Of Stress And Negative Affect On Eating And Weight Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis, Taylor Spadory

Public Health Theses

Overweight and obesity have become incredibly pressing public health issues in the United States. Rising rates of prevalence pose grave risks to population health and underscore the need for a greater understanding of the underlying mechanisms that contribute to increased eating and weight gain. While stress and negative affect (NA) have been recognized as possible predictors, the literature is inconsistent and experimental studies have produced mixed results. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive quantitative meta-analysis to assess the prospective effects of stress and NA on eating and weight outcomes, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We …

From Theory To Practice: Zoonotic Spillover, One Health And The Role Of Local Indigenous Communities, Pranav Prabhu Savanur Jan 2023

From Theory To Practice: Zoonotic Spillover, One Health And The Role Of Local Indigenous Communities, Pranav Prabhu Savanur

Public Health Theses

This paper discusses the impact of zoonotic spillovers on public health and the need for a One Health approach to preventing future pandemics. Zoonotic spillovers occur when pathogens are transmitted from animals to humans, facilitated by anthropogenic land changes, migration or trade, increased human-animal contact, and poor biosafety. However, anthropogenic land use change is the primary driver for zoonotic spillovers. Most emerging infectious diseases in humans are of zoonotic origin, and the impact of these spillovers on public health is significant. The paper emphasizes the need to prevent spillover events for primary pandemic prevention, which requires a coordinated and collaborative …

Measurement Of Fluid Movement Throughout The Brain Via Multiple Magnetic Resonance Imaging Techniques During High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, Jack W. Beaty Mr

Dissertations and Theses

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive method of neuromodulation with applications in neuroscience, clinical care, and biomedical engineering. tDCS has been well established as a safe method of applying low amplitude current between two or more electrodes to alter excitation thresholds and neuroplasticity. Recently, in-vitro and clinical studies have suggested that DC stimulation can induce a transient, polarity-specific, effect of increased water exchange across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The electroosmotic effect, the proposed phenomenon driving water exchange, is a biophysical response of charged ions moving across an oppositely-charged surface, i.e., the tight junction, when subjected to an electric …

Situating The Corrido In Diego Rivera’S Murals At The Ministry Of Public Education, Calla Flood Tardino

Dissertations and Theses

On the top floor of Diego Rivera’s colossal mural cycle at the Ministry of Public Education, the artist painted a matte red banner with the lyrics of revolutionary ballads, known as corridos. Although there is a great amount of scholarship surrounding Rivera and his murals at the Ministry of Public Education, there is a gap in literature about the inclusion of the corrido banner and its significance. By building on the scholarship from art historians (Mary Coffey, Dafne Cruz Porchini, Anna Indych-López), historians and ethnomusicologists (Cati de los Ríos, Maria Herrera-Sobek, Jose Limón, Américo Paredes, Michael Denning), and scholars …

Effects Of The Otx2ecr2 Enhancer & Prox1 Overexpression In Murine Retina Development, Erick J. Subillaga Jan 2023

Effects Of The Otx2ecr2 Enhancer & Prox1 Overexpression In Murine Retina Development, Erick J. Subillaga

Dissertations and Theses

There is a large subset of retinal progenitor cells that upregulate the OTX2 gene in the developing retina of the mouse. OTX2 is a homeobox transcription factor important for the development of photoreceptors and bipolar cells. If OTX2 is knocked out, photoreceptors and bipolar cells fail to differentiate. In order for OTX2 to be activated in certain retinal populations, it requires the activity of an enhancer called OTX2ECR2. Past studies demonstrated that retinal progenitor cells that had activity of OTX2ECR2 turned into horizontal cells, which require OTX2 for cell genesis and survival, and photoreceptors which require OTX2 for cell …

Interaction Of Adhd Severity And Neighborhood-Level Ses On Preschoolers’ Risk For Obesity At School-Age, Ramya V. Jayanthi

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) oftentimes emerges during the preschool years. School-age children with ADHD are at an increased risk for obesity as compared to their non-ADHD peers, but it is unknown if this risk is observed in younger children. Socioeconomic status (SES) is negatively related to both ADHD and obesity, but how SES interacts with ADHD to affect later obesity is unknown. This study aimed to examine if preschool ADHD diagnosis and severity interacted with neighborhood-level SES to increase risk for overweight/obesity and greater growth in BMI at school-age. We hypothesized that ADHD severity/diagnosis would be associated with greater growth …

This study examined exposure to two types of potentially traumatic events (racial discrimination …

Immigrant Risk, Self-Discontinuity, And The Role Of Nostalgia, Leila Talhouk Jan 2023

Immigrant Risk, Self-Discontinuity, And The Role Of Nostalgia, Leila Talhouk

Dissertations and Theses

Background: There are conflicting theories and data about immigrants’ health in the host country (e.g., immigrant risk vs. paradox), which have encouraged researchers to examine more nuanced factors related to immigration to clarify these inconsistencies. This two-part study aimed to shed light on these discrepancies by investigating psychoanalytic concepts that have not yet been empirically tested. The study focuses on immigrant self-discontinuity, a migration- induced disruption in one’s sense of self-sameness and unconscious sense of going-on-being, manifesting in moments of disorientation, disorganization, or dissociative-like experiences. There is no adequate instrument to measure this construct; as such, Part 1 of the …

Auditory Processing Deficits In Msh2-Ko Mice Are Linked To Aberrant Inhibitory Neuron Function In The Thalamic Reticular Nucleus, Sadia N. Rahman Jan 2023

Auditory Processing Deficits In Msh2-Ko Mice Are Linked To Aberrant Inhibitory Neuron Function In The Thalamic Reticular Nucleus, Sadia N. Rahman

Dissertations and Theses

DNA repair mechanisms are crucial for both cellular development and function. One highly conserved DNA repair factor is Mut-S Homolog 2 (Msh2), which corrects base-base mismatches and insertion/deletion loops. In humans, defects in this repair pathway are linked to diseases that have severe neurological pathologies. These include Lynch syndrome, Huntington’s disease and demyelination of the corpus callosum. The fundamental role of Msh2 in brain function is unknown. Using an Msh2-/- mouse model we began an exploration of its impact on the processing of sensory information, a crucial function to an animal’s survival. The goal of this …

Ultrastructural Correlates Of Axons And Synapses Belonging To Different Circuits In Ferret Primary Visual Cortex, Anjelique Sawh Jan 2023

Ultrastructural Correlates Of Axons And Synapses Belonging To Different Circuits In Ferret Primary Visual Cortex, Anjelique Sawh

Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this study was to determine differences in distinctive layers of mammalian primary visual cortex through analysis of their ultrastructural characteristics. Characterizing brain circuitry using 3-dimensional reconstruction of electron microscopy images, and subsequent ultrastructural analysis of axonal populations provides us with a better understanding of the connectivity of the neural circuits. By quantifying ultrastructural differences in axonal processes such as synaptic densities, types of synapses and their post-synaptic densities (PSDs), mitochondrial volumes, synaptic vesicle aggregates, dendritic targets, and bouton volumes, we aimed to understand whether differences in anatomical specializations among different cortical layers could underlie differences in function …

Assessment Of Material Properties In Bone Surrounding Microdamage, Niovi Dollas Jan 2023

Assessment Of Material Properties In Bone Surrounding Microdamage, Niovi Dollas

Dissertations and Theses

Bisphosphonates [BPs] are the mainstay for osteoporosis treatment. They suppress bone resorption/remodeling, preventing bone loss. However, BPs also suppress the beneficial bone remodeling that replaces microscopically damaged bone that occurs from normal mechanical wear-and-tear or fatigue, leading to impaired tissue material properties and in some instances atypical femoral fractures.

In these studies, we assessed the effects of acute fatigue, fatigue induced remodeling, and fatigue microdamage with remodeling suppression using the clinical BP, alendronate [ALN], on local bone material properties. Studies were performed on cortical bone sections from rat ulnae into which fatigue damage had been introduced in vivo. Rat …

Analysis Of Chemical Elements In Basalts Using Mislabeled Data, A Machine Learning Approach, Jenifer Vivar

Dissertations and Theses

Scientists use basalt chemistry to discriminate among different tectonic settings. There are well-known chemical elements used to classify tectonic settings. An exploration of new features is done using Logistic Regression and Random Forest to discover any new elements of interest. The models were used with other tools, such as recursive feature elimination and permutations, to increase reliability. Among the scarcely explored chemical elements are Terbium (Tb), Holmium (Ho), Samarium (Sm), and Erbium (Er). The data used for the exploration contained many outliers. Therefore, an ensemble model was created to explore the location and composition of such outliers. The ensemble was …

Mechanically Driven In Vivo Osteocyte Ca2+ Signaling: Aging And Pharmacologic Effects, James Padgett Jan 2023

Mechanically Driven In Vivo Osteocyte Ca2+ Signaling: Aging And Pharmacologic Effects, James Padgett

Dissertations and Theses

Bone’s ability to respond and adapt to mechanical loading declines significantly with age which is a major contributor to bone fragility. It is widely accepted that osteocytes are the key cells responsible for orchestrating the development of the “ideal” skeleton. This ability is attributed to osteocyte’s role as the primary mechanosensing cell that is responsible for maintaining the skeleton’s integrity throughout life. Recent work from our laboratory has shed light into how osteocytes respond to mechanical loading in vivo. The breakthrough approaches that enabled these discoveries were development of: (1) the first ever reporter mouse model with a genetically encoded …

Interventions That Move: Characterizing The Language Of Therapist Responses To High Patient Arousal, Karen Tocatly

Dissertations and Theses

The Referential Process (RP) is defined as a set of functions (Arousal, Symbolizing, and Reflecting/Reorganizing) that describe the rendering of subsymbolic experience into verbal, symbolized form (Bucci, 2021). Movement through the RP — beginning with the subsymbolically-dominated Arousal function — has been tied to multiple theoretical and clinical understandings of therapeutic progress and personality change (Bucci, 2013; Mariani et al., 2013). The present exploratory study seeks to identify whether certain therapist language features are linked to the facilitation of patients’ movement from Arousal to Symbolizing. Using treatment transcripts from the RP Group Data Base, cases of high patient Arousal were …

Scaling And Scalar Analysis As A Framework For Research On Teacher Learning, Lara J. Handsfield

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This paper argues for scalar analysis as a framework for understanding negotiations of competing ideological demands and power relationships in teacher learning. Two illustrative examples are presented, including video data of a student teacher (Camille) attempting to integrate multimodal and digital literacy practices into their instruction, and a research interview between Lara and Camille. Drawing on research in both literacy studies and applied linguistics, the illustrative scalar analyses move beyond linguistic understandings of discourse to also include embodied discourse and materiality as central to understanding complexities of teaching and teacher learning. Implications are presented for research and practice.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a staple food for many households in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and also contributes to the gross domestic product (GDP). However, the maize yields reported in most SSA countries are very low and this is mainly attributed to biotic and abiotic stresses. These stresses have been exacerbated by climate change which has led to long periods of drought or heavy flooding and the emergence of new biotic stresses. Few reports exist which compile the biotic stresses affecting maize production in SSA. Here, five major biotic stresses of maize in Kenya are presented which are attributed to …
