Trait Impulsivity And Acute Alcohol Responses As Markers Of Binge Drinking In Young Adults, Holley Jamison Jan 2023

Trait Impulsivity And Acute Alcohol Responses As Markers Of Binge Drinking In Young Adults, Holley Jamison

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Impulsivity, tolerance to alcohol-induced motor impairment, and high sensitivity to alcohol-induced disinhibition each have empirical support as markers of alcohol-related problems. However, research on alcohol response and personality-based markers of risk have remained largely independent lines of research. This dissertation examined how individual differences in these well-established markers may interact to additively contribute to heavy drinking.

Participants were 96 young adults (21-33 years old). with no history of AUD. They self-reported their drinking habits over the prior 90 days, and behavioral tasks measuring disinhibition and motor impairment were administered on two separate days following two alcohol doses (active [0.65 g/kg] …

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The 2021 Supreme Court Term ended with a bang, yielding blockbuster cases making headlines. But what of the rest of the cases? This is the first major paper to examine the “Trump effect,” meaning the influence of three Justices appointed by President Trump who all share a “unified” judicial philosophy. In a two-year project, starting from 2020, when Justice Barrett ascended to the Court, to the end of June 2022, this article reviews 124 cases and over 300 opinions. There is both good and bad news for the court’s new “unified” judicial philosophy. History and text are both upwardly mobile …

Modifying Lysosomal Cholesterol Or Potassium Channel Activity Prevents Silica-Induced Inflammation, Rebekah Louise Kendall Jan 2023

Modifying Lysosomal Cholesterol Or Potassium Channel Activity Prevents Silica-Induced Inflammation, Rebekah Louise Kendall

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Chronic inflammation contributes to a number of diseases, driven by NLRP3 inflammasome activity and the lack of resolution. Silicosis is one such disease, brought on by the unresolved inflammation caused by inhaled crystalline silica particles of sufficiently small size. These particles are taken up by alveolar macrophages to protect the fragile alveolar spaces. Silica particles interact with phagolysosomal membranes through nearly free silanol moieties and disrupt the lipid order of the lysosomal membrane thereby causing permeabilization. This permeabilization (LMP) leads to the release of proteases including Cathepsin B that promote the assembly and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. The inflammasome …

Insights From The Environment: Unveiling Methodological Biases And The Impacts Of Beavermediated Environmental Variation On Amphibian-Parasite Dynamics, Leah Marie Fischer Jan 2023

Insights From The Environment: Unveiling Methodological Biases And The Impacts Of Beavermediated Environmental Variation On Amphibian-Parasite Dynamics, Leah Marie Fischer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Environmental variation plays an important role in shaping patterns of parasite and pathogen infections within ecosystems and populations. Effective management of wildlife diseases hinges on the detection of parasites and pathogens, followed by the identification of trends in infections that can be used for predicting their spread and implementing control measures. Beavers are ecosystem engineers and keystone species that serve as important sources of environmental variation. In North America, beavers are promoted for the conservation of imperiled taxa like amphibians which are facing declines driven by habitat loss, parasites, and pathogens. Beavers create diverse habitats that attract amphibians, but these …

Comparison Of Mediterranean Diet Adherence Across Scoring Systems In U.S. Adults, Meghan Pendleton Jan 2023

Comparison Of Mediterranean Diet Adherence Across Scoring Systems In U.S. Adults, Meghan Pendleton

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by high intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil, and seafood; moderate intake of dairy, lean proteins, and alcohol; and low intake of red meat and sweets. This pattern consistently correlates with health benefits in epidemiological research, which uses numerous scoring systems to measure diet adherence. No withinpopulation system comparisons have been conducted in the U.S. to understand how differences in system constructs may impact adherence measurement. This study used food intake data from a U.S. sample of 72 older adults to calculate scores with the Alternative Mediterranean Diet Scale, Mediterranean Diet Scale, Pyramid-Based Mediterranean …

Phytase Supplemented Diets Do Not Reduce The Abundance Of Cyanobacteria And Common Offflavor Compounds In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Chrysops X M. Saxatilis) Aquaculture Ponds, Kevin K. Schrader, Bartholmew W. Green, Steven D. Rawles, Matthew E. Mcentire Jan 2023

Phytase Supplemented Diets Do Not Reduce The Abundance Of Cyanobacteria And Common Offflavor Compounds In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Chrysops X M. Saxatilis) Aquaculture Ponds, Kevin K. Schrader, Bartholmew W. Green, Steven D. Rawles, Matthew E. Mcentire

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Freshwater fish grown in earthen ponds in the southeastern United States can acquire “earthy” and “musty” taints due to the bioaccumulation of the cyanobacteria metabolites geosmin and 2-methyisoborneol (MIB) in the fish flesh and result in unmarketable fish. Dense cyanobacteria communities occur because nutrient inputs (phosphorus) are high in fish production ponds due to high feed application rates. In this study, hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops x M. saxatilis) grown in earthen ponds was offered one of the six diets including diets supplemented with phytase to reduce phosphorus input to the pond and the subsequent intention of …

Performance Of Phytase-Treated Fishmeal-Free And All-Plant Protein Diets In Pond Production Of Market Sized Hybrid Striped Bass, Bartholomew W. Green, Steven D. Rawles, T. Gibson Gaylord, Kevin K. Schrader, Matthew E. Mcentire, Carl D. Webster

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We determined if ideal protein (IP) fishmeal-free (FMF) or all-plant protein (PP) diets of available ingredients satisfied production needs of hybrid striped bass (HSB; Morone chrysops x M. saxatilis) grown to market size in ponds managed according to industry practices, and if phytase (Phy) superdosing (20,000 FTUs) could alleviate inorganic phosphorus supplementation. An off-the-shelf commercial feed (COM), an IP control diet containing 16% fishmeal (FM), and four IP test diets with or without phytase superdosing (FMF, FMF + Phy, PP, PP + Phy) were evaluated. Inorganic phosphorus was excluded from phytase treated diets. Hybrid striped bass (averaging 344 …

Seeking A Common Theme: A Study Of Ceramic Effigy Artifacts In The Pre-Hispanic American Southwest And Northern Mexico Using Computer Image Pattern Recognition And Phylogenetic Analysis, Lee Roger Tallier Jr.

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Effigy artifacts are found throughout the Pre-Hispanic American Southwest and Northern Mexico (PHASNM), as well as in other cultures around the world, with many sharing the same forms and design features. The earliest figurines within the PHASNM were partial anthropomorphic figurines made from fired clay, dating to between A.D. 287 and A.D. 312 (Morss 1954:27). They were found in a pit house village of Bluff Ruin in the Forestdale Valley of eastern Arizona, and they appeared to be associated with the Mogollon culture. The temporal range of the samples examined in this study is from approximately 200 A.D. to 1650 …

Does Behavioral Synchrony Extend To Robots? Children’S Sharing, Mentalizing, And Social Attributions To Synchronous Others, Sarah E. Sweezy Jan 2023

Does Behavioral Synchrony Extend To Robots? Children’S Sharing, Mentalizing, And Social Attributions To Synchronous Others, Sarah E. Sweezy

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Behavioral synchrony, or the act of keeping rhythm with others, has many implications on children’s interactions with others, from prosocial behaviors to feelings of affiliation with synchronous people. However, little is known about how behavioral synchrony applies to non-human entities. From robots leading movement-based learning in classrooms or being engaged in cultural settings, a new series of questions arise for how children view synchronizing with non-human others. The current study aimed to investigate how broadly synchronization effects would extend in a child sample: Are behavioral synchrony effects limited to synchronizing with humans or do they extend to social agents (e.g., …

Variation In Body Composition In Deer Mice: The Biogeography And Ecophysiology Of Energy Allocation, Cole Joseph Wolf Jan 2023

Variation In Body Composition In Deer Mice: The Biogeography And Ecophysiology Of Energy Allocation, Cole Joseph Wolf

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Body composition, the percent of lean and fat mass, is a snapshot of an individual’s energetic state at a moment in time. Wild organisms should allocate energy to optimize fitness, so tracking changes in body composition provides a window into how priorities may shift throughout the year or across environments. While seasonal variation in body composition is wellcharacterized in systems such migrating birds (Scott et al. 1994) and hibernating mammals (Hellgren 1998), much less is known about how this trait varies across species ranges and thus how organisms modify their body composition and to meet local environmental challenges. For my …

The First Translocation Of Bighorn Sheep In California: A Critical Review Of The Activities Of William Franklin Frakes, Vernon C. Bleich, Glenn W. Sudmeier, Michael W. Wolter, Richard A. Weaver

Human–Wildlife Interactions

In the absence of verification, historical aspects of wildlife management or conservation sometimes have become established in the literature and persisted therein for decades; in other situations, serendipitous discoveries have corrected information that earlier had been treated as factual. In some cases, efforts to vet historical accounts have been ongoing for many years; such is the case involving William Franklin Frakes, an American rancher, naturalist, adventurer, and author, who captured and translocated bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in California, USA, near the turn of the twentieth century. In this review, we provide information that substantiates the majority of Frakes’s …

Receptor-Interacting Protein 1 And 3 Kinase Activity Are Required For High-Fat Diet Induced Liver Injury In Mice, Xiaoqin Wu, Rakesh K Arya, Emily Huang, Megan R Mcmullen, Laura E Nagy

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: The RIP1-RIP3-MLKL-mediated cell death pathway is associated with progression of non-alcohol-associated fatty liver/steatohepatitis (NAFL/NASH). Previous work identified a critical role for MLKL, the key effector regulating necroptosis, but not RIP3, in mediating high fat diet-induced liver injury in mice. RIP1 and RIP3 have active N-terminus kinase domains essential for activation of MLKL and subsequent necroptosis. However, little is known regarding domain-specific roles of RIP1/RIP3 kinase in liver diseases. Here, we hypothesized that RIP1/RIP3 kinase activity are required for the development of high fat diet-induced liver injury.

METHODS:Rip1K45A/K45A and Rip3K51A/K51A kinase-dead mice on a C57BL/6J background and their littermate …

The secretory enzyme human ribonuclease 1 (RNase1) is involved in innate immunity and anti-inflammation, achieving host defense and anti-cancer effects; however, whether RNase1 contributes to adaptive immune response in the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unclear. Here, we established a syngeneic immunocompetent mouse model in breast cancer and demonstrated that ectopic RNase1 expression significantly inhibited tumor progression. Overall changes in immunological profiles in the mouse tumors were analyzed by mass cytometry and showed that the RNase1-expressing tumor cells significantly induced CD4+ Th1 and Th17 cells and natural killer cells and reduced granulocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells, supporting that RNase1 favors an antitumor …

Sound Speed Estimation For Distributed Aberration Correction In Laterally Varying Media, Rehman Ali, Trevor M Mitcham, Melanie Singh, Marvin M Doyley, Richard R Bouchard, Jeremy J Dahl, Nebojsa Duric Jan 2023

Sound Speed Estimation For Distributed Aberration Correction In Laterally Varying Media, Rehman Ali, Trevor M Mitcham, Melanie Singh, Marvin M Doyley, Richard R Bouchard, Jeremy J Dahl, Nebojsa Duric

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Spatial variation in sound speed causes aberration in medical ultrasound imaging. Although our previous work has examined aberration correction in the presence of a spatially varying sound speed, practical implementations were limited to layered media due to the sound speed estimation process involved. Unfortunately, most models of layered media do not capture the lateral variations in sound speed that have the greatest aberrative effect on the image. Building upon a Fourier split-step migration technique from geophysics, this work introduces an iterative sound speed estimation and distributed aberration correction technique that can model and correct for aberrations resulting from laterally varying …

Integrating Comorbidity Knowledge For Alzheimer's Disease Drug Repurposing Using Multi-Task Graph Neural Network, Ko-Hong Lin, Kang-Lin Hsieh, Xiaoqian Jiang, Yejin Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a multifactorial disease that shares common etiologies with its multiple comorbidities, especially vascular diseases. To predict repurposable drugs for AD utilizing the relatively well-investigated comorbidities' knowledge, we proposed a multi-task graph neural network (GNN)-based pipeline that incorporates the corresponding biomedical interactome of these diseases with their genetic markers and effective therapeutics. Our pipeline can accurately capture the interactions and disease classification in the network. Next, we predicted drugs that might interact with the AD module by the node embedding similarity. Our candidates are mostly BBB permeable, and literature evidence showed their potential for treating AD pathologies, …

INTRODUCTION: Improved therapies for glioblastoma (GBM) are desperately needed and require preclinical evaluation in models that capture tumor heterogeneity and intrinsic resistance seen in patients. Epigenetic alterations have been well documented in GBM and lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1/KDM1A) is amongst the chromatin modifiers implicated in stem cell maintenance, growth and differentiation. Pharmacological inhibition of LSD1 is clinically relevant, with numerous compounds in various phases of preclinical and clinical development, but an evaluation and comparison of LSD1 inhibitors in patient-derived GBM models is lacking.

METHODS: To assess concordance between knockdown of LSD1 and inhibition of LSD1 using a prototype inhibitor in …

Sart-3 Functions To Regulate Germline Sex Determination In C Elegans, Tokiko Furuta, Swathi Arur

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Caenorhabditis elegans gene sart-3 was first identified as the homolog of human SART3 ( S quamous cell carcinoma A ntigen R ecognized by T -cells 3). In humans, expression of SART3 is associated with squamous cell carcinoma, thus most of the studies focus on its potential role as a target of cancer immunotherapy (Shichijo et al. 1998; Yang et al. 1999). Furthermore, SART3 is also known as Tip110 (Liu et al. 2002; Whitmill et al. 2016) in the context of HIV virus host activation pathway. Despite these disease related studies, the molecular function of this protein was not revealed until …
