A Quality Improvement Initiative: Addressing Workplace Violence Toward Nurses To Promote A Culture Of Safety In An Inpatient Psychiatric Facility, Ernestina Danso

DNP Scholarly Projects

This quality improvement initiative aimed to address workplace violence against nurses in inpatient psychiatric facilities and promote a culture of safety. The QI project involved 27 participants, including inpatient psychiatric nurses and mental health counselors from Cahill 4 and 7 West units at the Cambridge Campus. The primary objective was to identify challenges that hindered the effective utilization of the Broset Violence Checklist (BVC) tool for referring patients to sensory modulation rooms.

Pre- and post-intervention surveys were conducted to assess participants' self-reported knowledge and barriers to BVC and sensory room utilization. Educational sessions covering workplace violence, debriefing techniques, and the …

Gaping Gaps In The History Of The Independent State Legislature Doctrine: Mcpherson V. Blacker, Usurpation, And The Right Of The People To Choose Their President, Mark Bonhorst, Michael W. Fitzgerald, Aviam Soifer

Mitchell Hamline Law Review

The so-called independent state legislature doctrine was the jurisprudential heart of the effort by former President Trump and allies to overturn the 2020 presidential election and was featured in the briefs for Texas v. Pennsylvania. The idea that state legislatures might have power to intervene against the popular vote for the electoral college helped animate the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Frighteningly, at the very end of the 2021 Term, the Supreme Court accepted review of a North Carolina case—Moore v. Harper—in which Republican Party legislators invoked the independent state legislature doctrine to contend that state legislators …

Early Childhood Teachers’ Perspectives On Their Responses To Children’S Challenging Behaviors, Dr. Sharon Denise Scallion Jan 2023

Early Childhood Teachers’ Perspectives On Their Responses To Children’S Challenging Behaviors, Dr. Sharon Denise Scallion

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe problem that was the focus of this study was the high rate of suspensions and expulsions of preschool children enrolled in independently funded childcare centers in Texas, and the lack of understanding of preschool teachers’ response to children’s challenging behavior. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore preschool teachers’ perspective on how they handle children’s challenging behaviors, and what inclines teachers toward suspending or expelling children from independently funded childcare centers. Liu’s theory of children’s externalizing behavior provided the conceptual framework for the study. Ten preschool teachers from urban, independently funded childcare centers in Texas were …

Rome & Her Greatest Theatric: The Controversies Of Emperor Nero, Zoie A. Dean Jan 2023

Rome & Her Greatest Theatric: The Controversies Of Emperor Nero, Zoie A. Dean

Tenor of Our Times

Emperor Nero was the last of the four Julio-Claudian emperors and has been considered to be one of worst emperors of Rome. The Roman scholars and Christians historians were some of his greatest foes, and the only ones left to tell his story. This paper takes a second look at these ancient sources and addresses what modern scholars have discovered about the true nature of Nero. Though he has been painted as clueless and childlike, in reality, Nero was much more cold and calculated than anyone had gave him credit for.

Human Rights And Divine Holiness, Kevin Vallier Jan 2023

Human Rights And Divine Holiness, Kevin Vallier

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Theists commonly hold that God endows humans with rights. Standard explanations draw on natural law theory or divine command theory. However, the natural law account does not give God a central role in explaining our rights, and the divine command account does not assign human nature a significant explanatory role. A successful theistic explanation of human rights must meet three conditions: (1) God must directly explain human rights; (2) human nature must also directly explain human rights; (3) this dual contribution must explain why morality forbids rights violations by grounding the deontic reasons associated with rights. I propose a holiness …

To better understand reproductive physiology of humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae that reside in Hawai’i and Alaska, enzyme immunoassays were validated for both progesterone and testosterone in free-ranging and stranded animals (n = 185 biopsies). Concentrations were analyzed between different depths of large segments of blubber taken from skin to muscle layers of stranded female (n = 2, 1 pregnant, 1 non-pregnant) and male (n = 1) whales. Additionally, progesterone metabolites were identified between pregnant (n = 1) and non-pregnant (n = 3) females using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Progesterone concentrations were compared between juvenile (i.e., sexually immature), lactating, and …

The Impact Of Cannabidiol In Patients With Early Psychosis: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Sreeja Kodali

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

We aimed to study the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in out-patients with early psychosis on clinical metrics of psychosis and cognition and on psychophysiological electroencephalogram (EEG) metrics of psychosis. Adult outpatient subjects with a primary psychotic disorder within approximately five years of psychosis onset were enrolled in a four-week, two-period, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial (clinicaltrials.gov NCT02504151). Subjects were randomized in a one-to-one ratio to receive either CBD (oral 800 mg/day) or placebo in the first of two treatment periods in a randomized, double-blind manner. Primary outcome measures assessed were psychosis symptoms measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS); …

Almajiri Health; A Scoping Review On Disease, Health Literacy And Space For Participatory Research, Muzzammil Imran Muhammad

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Introduction

Almajirai are male children who leave the care of their parents to learn the Qur’an and study Islam under the tutelage of a Mallam or Imam at a Tsangaya. Almajiranci refers to the system of education based on this relationship between almajiri and mallam, and which was the dominant mode of education in precolonial Hausaland – Northern Nigeria and Southern Niger. This system remains widespread and popular in both countries. In recent years, discourse around almajirai has featured prominently in media from and about this region, and has associated almajiranci with non-participation in formal education, abuse, poverty, and underdevelopment. …

Toll-Like Receptors 2/4 Directly Co-Stimulate Arginase-1 Induction Critical For Macrophage-Mediated Renal Tubule Regeneration, Natnael Beyene Doilicho Jan 2023

Toll-Like Receptors 2/4 Directly Co-Stimulate Arginase-1 Induction Critical For Macrophage-Mediated Renal Tubule Regeneration, Natnael Beyene Doilicho

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Following kidney injury, macrophages that have infiltrated the kidney undergo a transition from an initial proinflammatory state to a pro-reparative one characterized by the expression of arginase-1 (Arg 1), mannose receptor (Mrc1) and macrophage scavenger receptor-1 (Msr1). Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is an essential tubular-cell-derived determinant of the pro-reparative phenotype. However, it remains unclear what additional, if any, signals macrophages are integrating to maximally induce arginase-1.

Hypothesis: (1) The addition of cellular debris as a tubular cell cast mimetic will augment Arg1 expression in GM-CSF stimulated bone marrow derived macrophages; (2) Toll-like-receptors 2/4 transduce the debris signal from (1) …

Beta-Catenin Nuclear Transport In Wnt Signaling: Kap-Beta2/Transportin Mediates Nuclear Import Of Beta-Catenin Via A Py-Nls Motif In A Ran Gtpase Dependent Manner, Woong Y. Hwang Jan 2023

Beta-Catenin Nuclear Transport In Wnt Signaling: Kap-Beta2/Transportin Mediates Nuclear Import Of Beta-Catenin Via A Py-Nls Motif In A Ran Gtpase Dependent Manner, Woong Y. Hwang

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Wnt signaling is essential for embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis; mutations in Wnt pathway components are major drivers of multiple diseases especially cancer. β-catenin is a key effector in this pathway that translocates into the nucleus and activates Wnt responsive genes. However, due to our lack of understanding of β-catenin nuclear transport, therapeutic modulation of Wnt signaling has been challenging. Here, we took an unconventional approach to address this long-standing question by exploiting a heterologous model system, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which contains a conserved nuclear transport machinery. In contrast to prior work, we demonstrate that β-catenin accumulates …

Relationship Between Parental Attachment And Cyberbullying Within The Homeschooling Community, Jason King Jan 2023

Relationship Between Parental Attachment And Cyberbullying Within The Homeschooling Community, Jason King

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cyberbullying has been a focus of research and societal concern since the advent of the internet. Both perpetrators and victims of cyberbullying experience significant adverse effects including depression, anxiety, internalizing and externalizing problems, suicidal ideation, and suicide. Despite the broad understanding of the impact of cyberbullying on mental and physical health, research has not prioritized the exploration of cyberbullying within the homeschooled population. The purpose of this quantitative survey design was to identify the characteristics and relationships between cyberbullying victimization and perpetration, attachment security, and religiosity in homeschooled adolescents. Using a framework of Bowlby’s attachment theory, the Parental Attachment Questionnaire, …

Nutrient Pollution And Chlorophyll-A As A Precursor To Harmful Algal Blooms And Cyanotoxins In Rehabilitated Machado Lake, California, Michael E. Shiang Jan 2023

Nutrient Pollution And Chlorophyll-A As A Precursor To Harmful Algal Blooms And Cyanotoxins In Rehabilitated Machado Lake, California, Michael E. Shiang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Algal blooms result in the formation of cyanotoxic conditions in a freshwater lake causing severe detrimental impacts to community and public health. Nitrogen, phosphorous, and ammonia stimulate the growth of phytoplankton biomass and algae, as measured by chlorophyll. This retrospective quantitative research study, grounded in the socioecological model, examined the relationship between nutrient pollutants and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) that forecast harmful algal blooms, a precursor to cyanotoxins. A former impaired lake, Machado Lake in California, provided an ideal setting to assess relationships among nutrient indicators and Chl-a post-lake rehabilitation. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were performed to determine if a relationship …

Decolonizing Equal Sovereignty, Rosa Hayes Jan 2023

Decolonizing Equal Sovereignty, Rosa Hayes

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In Shelby County v. Holder, 570 U.S. 529 (2013), the Supreme Court announced that a tradition of equal sovereignty among the states prohibits unwarranted federal intrusions into state sovereignty and invoked this newly created doctrine to strike down Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act. Scholarly critiques in Shelby County’s immediate aftermath debated the constitutional validity of the Court’s equal sovereignty reasoning and warned of the dire threat the VRA’s effacement posed to voting rights—concerns that recent litigation have vindicated.

But other recent litigation suggests that, abstracted from its problematic and consequential origins, equal sovereignty may be deployed …
