The Effect Of L-Citrulline Supplementation On Blood Pressure: An Updated Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Vraj Amin

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States and has remained as the leading cause of death. Large Mendelian randomization studies have found significant correlations between high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (CVD). In fact, high blood pressure is the single most important independent risk factor for CVD. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of L-citrulline on blood pressure to determine whether it could be advised as an effective treatment for high blood pressure. L-citrulline is a naturally occurring amino acid that readily converts to L-arginine within the human body. L-arginine …

The Relationship Between Task-Induced Stress And Time Perception, Annamarie Brosnihan Jan 2023

The Relationship Between Task-Induced Stress And Time Perception, Annamarie Brosnihan

Honors Undergraduate Theses

A distortion of time is often reported under the presence of stress or threatening stimuli, for instance motor vehicle accidents or near-death experiences. There is a lack of research on the complexity of time distortion under stress; thus, the present study aimed to explore the relationship between stress and time perception. Given the challenges associated with producing a stress response in a laboratory setting, difficult tasks have been previously used to produce a stress response, such as anagram tasks. However, it remains unknown whether experiencing time pressure while completing a stressful task can also influence time distortion. To investigate this, …

Speciesism In Childhood: An Exploration Of Children's Attitudes Toward Nonhuman Animals, Hannah C. Knotts Jan 2023

Speciesism In Childhood: An Exploration Of Children's Attitudes Toward Nonhuman Animals, Hannah C. Knotts

The Effects Of Head-Centric Rest Frames On Egocentric Distance Perception In Virtual Reality, Yahya Hmaiti Jan 2023

The Effects Of Head-Centric Rest Frames On Egocentric Distance Perception In Virtual Reality, Yahya Hmaiti

Honors Undergraduate Theses

It has been shown through several research investigations that users tend to underestimate distances in virtual reality (VR). Virtual objects that appear close to users wearing a Head-mounted display (HMD) might be located at a farther distance in reality. This discrepancy between the actual distance and the distance observed by users in VR was found to hinder users from benefiting from the full in-VR immersive experience, and several efforts have been directed toward finding the causes and developing tools that mitigate this phenomenon. One hypothesis that stands out in the field of spatial perception is the rest frame hypothesis (RFH), …

Cilia are microtubules-based, hair-like structures extending from the surface of cells. Cilia can be found in various parts of the body, including the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Olfactory cilia, which are specialized immotile cilia located on the olfactory sensory neurons of the nasal cavity, are responsible for detecting and transmitting signals related to the sense of smell. Primary cilia, another type of immotile cilia that are present solitary in almost all mammalian cells, have emerged as crucial cell antennae that can sense extracellular chemical and mechanical signals. Although numerous studies have demonstrated that dysfunctions of primary …

Epigenetic Regulation During The Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Cardiomyocytes, Nan Yang Jan 2023

Epigenetic Regulation During The Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Cardiomyocytes, Nan Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, constituting a quarter of total deaths. A major reason behind the high mortality of heart disease is the low regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes (CMs), which carry out the contractile function of the heart. Lineage- specific differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into CMs provides a promising therapeutic strategy. However, current methods suffer from challenges in generating mature and homogenous CMs in sufficient quantities for practical application. Moreover, little is known about the underlying epigenetic regulations in CM differentiation, which is essential during the establishment and maintenance of cell identity …

Yellow fever virus (YFV) is a reemerging global health threat, driven by several factors, including increased spread of the mosquito vector and rapid urbanization. Although a prophylactic vaccine exists, vaccine hesitancy, supply deficits, and distribution difficulties leave specific populations at risk of severe YFV disease, as evidenced by recent outbreaks in South America. To establish a treatment for patients with severe YFV infection, we tested 37 YFV-specific monoclonal antibodies isolated from vaccinated humans and identified two capable of potently neutralizing multiple pathogenic primary YFV isolates. Using both hamster and nonhuman primate models of lethal YFV infection, we demonstrate that a …

Feature Selection In High-Dimensional Space With Applications To Gene Expression Data, Nishan Pantha Jan 2023

Feature Selection In High-Dimensional Space With Applications To Gene Expression Data, Nishan Pantha

Theses

Recent years have seen rapid growth in high-dimensional datasets. Most existing machine learning (ML) algorithms fail in high-dimensional settings where many features could be redundant. A critical process of feature selection is thus applied in such a setting that helps in identifying the most relevant features while removing redundant ones. With the increase in high dimensionality, one is also faced with problems of efficiency and interpretation in performing such selection methods. Therefore, this thesis proposes a “novel” feature selection framework that uses an ensemble of interpretable ML algorithms to perform feature selection and the ranking of final features. Finally, this …

The Problem Of Habitual Offender Laws In States With Felony Disenfranchisement, Daniel Loehr Jan 2023

The Problem Of Habitual Offender Laws In States With Felony Disenfranchisement, Daniel Loehr

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Habitual offender laws operate to increase the sentence of an individual if that person already has a felony conviction. At the same time, many people with felony convictions cannot vote or run for office due to felony disenfranchisement laws. Thus, habitual offender laws target a formally disenfranchised group—people with felony convictions. That creates an archetypal political process problem. As John Hart Ely argued, laws that target a formally disenfranchised group are tainted and deserve heightened constitutional scrutiny. When reviewing habitual offender laws under the Eighth Amendment, however, courts have applied the opposite of heightened scrutiny—they have applied an extreme form …

Restorative Justice Diversion As A Structural Health Intervention In The Criminal Legal System, Thalia González Jan 2023

Restorative Justice Diversion As A Structural Health Intervention In The Criminal Legal System, Thalia González

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

A new discourse at the intersection of criminal justice and public health is bringing to light how exposure to the ordinariness of racism in the criminal legal system—whether in policing practices or carceral settings—leads to extraordinary outcomes in health. Drawing on empirical evidence of the deleterious health effects of system involvement coupled with new threats posed by COVID-19, advocates and academics have increasingly called for race-conscious public health-driven reforms to carcerality in the United States. Recognizing the significance of health to carceral reform, the initiation of a health justice grounded lexicon in criminal justice has opened the doorway to new …
