The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Pangi (Pangium edule Reinw) seed is known to be a poisonous material. However, it becomes safe for consumption after processing. This study determined the effect of village-level processing by the Obu Manuvu community of Marilog District, Davao City, Philippines on the antinutrient and nutritional composition of Pangi seeds. Processing methods involved washing with running water for about 15 s, boiling in water for 30 min, and soaking in flowing water in a nearby river overnight. Results showed that after processing, the levels of antinutrients such as cyanogenic glycosides and oxalates were reduced significantly (p < 0.05) by 99.15% and 78.23%, respectively. Further, the tannin content was also significantly reduced by 96.15%. The crude fat content significantly increased (p < 0.05) by about 54%. Crude ash and fiber decreased, while protein did not change significantly (p < 0.05). Minerals such as calcium and zinc increased (p < 0.05) by 221.43% and 64.39%, respectively while the iron and manganese levels remained unaffected. Findings of the study suggested that the processing method by the Obu Manuvu effectively reduces the level of antinutrients, thereby improving the edibility and safety of Pangi seeds. Further, the processing method improves the level of some nutrients, specifically crude fat, calcium, and zinc.

Embedding The Scientists: Civic Issues As Context For Teaching And Learning, Heather Lettner-Rust, Alix Dowling Kink, Edward Kinman, Joellen Pederson, Phillip Poplin
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
We teach science as a path to meaningful civic engagement in a participatory democracy and as a path that should be open to all; our concern lies in how the next generation of young citizens1 address challenging civic issues both by applying science to other contexts—public and civic—as well as communicating science to others—peers and the public. To that end, our article seeks to explain an interdisciplinary capstone course for our general education program that we developed to promote and support science learning and science communication by teaching in the context of important civic issues.

Stream Restoration Effectiveness In Mullins Creek In Fayetteville, Arkansas, Amadeo Scott
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Lotic waterways are vital for habitat, food, water, and flood protection, but urbanization poses a major threat to their integrity. Runoff from urban surfaces leads to pollution, flashiness, loss of biodiversity, and other symptoms, also known as Urban Stream Syndrome (USS). To combat USS, streams can be restored, but most restorations are not monitored so their long-term effectiveness is unknown. This study quantitatively evaluated a decade-old stream restoration in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to assess its effectiveness in combating USS and achieving set restoration goals, and to gain insights for future restoration projects. Restoration goals included decreasing erosion and sedimentation, increasing pool …
A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Sports Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Among Student Athletes At The University Of Alaska Anchorage, Emily J. Thompson
A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Sports Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Among Student Athletes At The University Of Alaska Anchorage, Emily J. Thompson
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Nutrition is essential for college athletes. However, many athletes may not meet nutrition recommendations for their specific sport due to a lack of knowledge or because they do not believe that proper nutrition is essential for their performance. To ensure that programs best meet the needs of athletes, it is important to understand athletes’ current knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) related to sports nutrition to improve nutritional awareness and elicit desired behavior change. The idea that improving KAB can lead to behavior change specific to nutrition is well-studied and has its foundations in social cognitive theory. However, there is a …

Barr and Kirkorian summarize decades of research about young children’s learning and transfer from screen media, offer a new theoretical model of factors involved in early multimedia learning, and suggest a future research agenda to study learning from commercial media products “in the wild” of everyday family life outside the lab. In this commentary, the authors offer background on the development of symbolic understanding and “pictorial competence” for young children’s learning from screen media and attempt to deepen the discussion of cognitive factors and individual differences that affect early learning.

Intergenerational Transmission Of Gendered Cultural Traditions And Environmental Stewardship Values Among Adirondack Hunters, Kaitlin S. Long
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Hunting is not simply a sport, but rather a culture that connects practitioners to each other, to the natural environment, and to those who have come before them and will continue the tradition long after they are gone. As a culture intertwined with the environment in which practices and traditions take place, hunting can act as a mechanism for both environmental conservation efforts and the performance of a particular type of ethics. This dissertation explores how hunting values and traditions are transmitted to new, more diverse generations of hunters, how hunters forge and maintain connections through hunting, and how hunting …
Identification Of Genes Conferring Resistance To 2-Amino-3-Methylimidazo [4,5-F] Quinoline Genotoxicity In Budding Yeast Using High-Throughput And Targeted Approaches, Michael J. Dolan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are potent carcinogenic agents found in charred read meat and cigarette smoke. We hypothesize that HAAs may contribute to red meat being a risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC). At present, few eukaryotic genes conferring resistance to HAAs have been identified. In this research, the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (budding yeast) was profiled using next-generation sequencing to identify genes conferring resistance to one such HAA, 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (IQ).CYP1A2 and NAT2 activate IQ to become a mutagenic nitrenium compound. Deletion libraries expressing human CYP1A2 and NAT2 or no human genes were exposed to either 400 or 800 …

Tye's Intentionalism: Representationalism & Bivalency Of Transparency, Ryan Skunda
Tye's Intentionalism: Representationalism & Bivalency Of Transparency, Ryan Skunda
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In this paper I examine the intentionalist theory of phenomenal consciousness articulated by the philosopher Michael Tye. Tye’s theory is also considered a representationalist theory, representationalism is a theory in the philosophy of mind that argues that we have internal representations in our mind that allow us to represent things that are in the world. Tye presupposes a connection between representationalism and intentionalism, which I challenge as part of my argument against him. I use his commitment to transparency and its bivalent nature to illustrate a conundrum for Tye and argue that an enactivist approach to phenomenal consciousness is superior …

Induction Of Protective Immunity In The Respiratory Tract With Ricin Toxin Immune Complexes, Lindsey Elizabeth Tolman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Ricin toxin (RT) is generated in the seeds of Ricinus communis. The highly potent toxin is comprised of two subunits, RTA and RTB. RT enters cells using RTB before RTA separates itself and inactivates the ribosome, inducing cell stress, inflammation, and eventual death. RT is particularly damaging in the respiratory tract, where intoxication induces an inflammatory cytokine storm.Though there are currently no therapeutics for RT intoxication, our group has generated and characterized a wide variety of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against RT. Among the top candidates in our collection are the IgGs PB10 and SylH3. Previous studies have demonstrated their exceptional …

Non-Invasive Focused Ultrasound Treatment To Improve Depressive-Like Behavior In A Hemi-Parkinsonian Rat Model, Huda Rehman
ALL - Honors Theses
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which there is a depletion of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Symptoms include those that are motor, such as tremors and rigidity, along with symptoms that are nonmotor, such as depression. Depression in Parkinson’s disease is seen in up to 50% of PD patients, and is often treated with traditional antidepressants, with varying levels of efficacy. In this research project, focused ultrasound was used as a non-pharmacological and non-invasive treatment to improve depressive-like behavior in a hemi-Parkinsonian rat model. To induce a hemi-Parkinsonian phenotype in rats, stereotaxic surgeries …

Inhibition Of Venom Gland V-Atpase Proton Pumps And Their Role In Snake Venom Acidification And Storage, Samuel Kerwin
Inhibition Of Venom Gland V-Atpase Proton Pumps And Their Role In Snake Venom Acidification And Storage, Samuel Kerwin
Master's Theses
Venomous snakes are capable of storing venom for years while maintaining functionality upon injection, with no known harmful impact to their own physiology; however, the mechanisms behind this are poorly understood. Several major components of venom, most notably SVMPs, are autolytic when active, suggesting the presence of an inhibitory environment during storage to preserve venom functionality. It is hypothesized that the venom gland is continuously acidified by vacuolar rotary proton pump mechanisms (V-ATPases) localized in mitochondria-rich cells found in small concentration within the venom gland secretory epithelium, keeping the venom inert at a pH of 5.4-5.6 during the production/storage period. …

Dna Barcoding Indicates Multiple Invasions Of The Freshwater Snail Melanoides Tuberculata Sensu Lato In Florida, Lori Tolley-Jordan, Michael A. Chadwick, Jimmy K. Triplett
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Melanoides tuberculata sensu lato (Thiaridae) are polymorphic female-clonal snails of Asian and African origins that have invaded freshwaters worldwide, including those in Florida. Although the snails have been documented in Florida for at least 70 years, no studies have investigated whether the observed distribution is due to a single introduction or multiple independent invasions. Here, cytochrome oxidase I was used to measure genetic diversity within and among sites in Florida and compare genetic diversity between Florida and other regions of the world. We also examined the relationship between shell morphology and haplotype diversity to determine if shell morphs can serve …

Background: Alterations in DNA methylation (DNAm) have been reported to be a mechanism by which bariatric surgeries resulted in considerable metabolic improvements. Previous studies have mostly focused on change in DNAm following weight-loss interventions, yet whether DNAm prior to intervention can explain the variability in glycemic outcomes has not been investigated. Here, we aim to examine whether baseline DNAm is differentially associated with glycemic outcomes induced by different types of weight-loss interventions. Methods: Participants were 75 adults with severe obesity who underwent non-surgical intensive medical intervention (IMI), adjustable gastric band (BAND) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) (n = 25 each). …

Objective analytical identification methods are still a minority in the praxis of paleobiological sciences. Subjective interpretation of fossils and their modifications remains a nonreplicable expert endeavor. Identification of African bovids is a crucial element in the reconstruction of paleo-landscapes, ungulate paleoecology, and, eventually, hominin adaptation and ecosystemic reconstruction. Recent analytical efforts drawing on Fourier functional analysis and discrimination methods applied to occlusal surfaces of teeth have provided a highly accurate framework to correctly classify African bovid tribes and taxa. Artificial intelligence tools, like computer vision, have also shown their potential to be objectively more accurate in the identification of taphonomic …

Digital Archives: How Western Newspapers Frame Our Remembrance Of The Gezi Park Protest, Nihar Sreepada, Ahmet Aksoy
Faculty Publications
We analyze the coverage of the Gezi Park protests by two major Western newspapers - The New York Times and The Guardian - through the lens of media framing, rhetoric, and collective memory. We argue that these digital archives frame Turkey's Gezi Park protests as a challenge to an authoritarian government by promoting the themes of unrest as a conflict of ideologies, oppression of citizens, and the park as a site of memory. In a concluding section, we focus on the significance of digital archives as repositories of collective memory and the role of media framing in shaping these reconstructions …

Does Social Organization, Litter Size, Sexual Dimorphism, And Phylogeny Influence Multiple Paternity In Mammals?, Madison Roberts
Honors Theses
Animal social systems are complex and the dynamics of one component could influence the dynamics of another. The aim of this literature search research was to determine the interrelatedness between mammalian social organization and mating system, two components of social systems. The mating system was represented by multiple paternity, the number of litters with more than one father, as genetic analysis tells which individuals reproduced with who. Variables that might influence multiple paternity amongst extant mammalian species included in this study are variable social organization, male social organization, mean litter size, sexual dimorphism, and phylogenetics. Analysis was conducted using 56 …
