Futures On Dry Ground: Anthropology And Coastal Planning, Theodore Hilton, Sheehan Moore
Futures On Dry Ground: Anthropology And Coastal Planning, Theodore Hilton, Sheehan Moore
Publications and Research
Around the world, governments, industry, and other actors are creating plans to save coasts from environmental crisis. Louisiana is one prominent example: levees and other measures protect oil and gas infrastructure from inundation as the wetlands buffer rapidly erodes—in large part due to that same industry. The state’s primary answer to land loss is a $50 billion Coastal Master Plan. To illuminate such responses in Louisiana and globally, this article reviews emerging literature and frames an anthropology of coastal planning around three themes: (1) novel orientations toward time and space, (2) the reproduction of power and capital in the name …
Predator Feeding Rates May Often Be Unsaturated Under Typical Prey Densities, Kyle E. Coblentz, Mark Novak, John Delong
Predator Feeding Rates May Often Be Unsaturated Under Typical Prey Densities, Kyle E. Coblentz, Mark Novak, John Delong
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Predator feeding rates (described by their functional response) must saturate at high prey densities. Although thousands of manipulative functional response experiments show feeding rate saturation at high densities under controlled conditions, it remains unclear how saturated feeding rates are at natural prey densities. The general degree of feeding rate saturation has important implications for the processes determining feeding rates and how they respond to changes in prey density. To address this, we linked two databases—one of functional response parameters and one on mass–abundance scaling—through prey mass to calculate a feeding rate saturation index. We find that: (1) feeding rates may …
Characterisation Of Selected Microbes In Terrestrial And Simulated Extraterrestrial Habitats: Human Health And Environmental Applications, Daniel Joseph Keaney
Characterisation Of Selected Microbes In Terrestrial And Simulated Extraterrestrial Habitats: Human Health And Environmental Applications, Daniel Joseph Keaney
Theses
The rapid development of the Space industry and associated technologies over the past decade is leading to the inevitable consideration of establishing human-based colonies on extra-terrestrial bodies such as the moon and Mars. With Mars being the focus of not only this body of work, but current New Space Age travel (NASA and SpaceX), a significant issue posed by Martian colonists includes establishing a safe and sustainable food source. Owing to its constantly evolving prehistoric landscape, the soils of Mars are contaminated with sodium perchlorate, a water-soluble salt that is toxic to humans, leftover from once inferred brine seeps that …
Modelling White Matter Pathology And Establishing A Novel Ex-Vivo Platform For Drug Identification In Neuroinflammation, Verity Mitchener
Modelling White Matter Pathology And Establishing A Novel Ex-Vivo Platform For Drug Identification In Neuroinflammation, Verity Mitchener
Peninsula Medical School Theses
White matter (WM) makes up a critical component of the CNS, composed primarily of myelinated axons. Herein, axons and the myelin sheath form a dynamic and communicative axo-glial unit which acts to regulate and support axonal function. The myelin sheath not only electrically insulates axons allowing for rapid and efficient axonal conduction and complex neuronal circuitry but also supports axonal viability. The loss or dysregulation of the myelin sheath is detrimental to axons as well as overall brain function. Furthermore, this is a key hallmark, not only, of classical WM diseases including multiple sclerosis but also is observed in brain …

Adoption Of Climate Smart Agricultural Technologies Among Smallholder Farmers In Semi-Arid Ghana, Mohammed Tiyumtaba Shaibu, Rose Afful, Daniel Nukpezah, Mohammed Shaibu, Darlington Sibanda
All Rsif Scholars' Publications
The evidence of climate change and variability in semi-arid Ghana is glaring and the adverse impact is being felt mostly by smallholder farmers because of their over dependence on agriculture for livelihood and subsistence. As a solution to building the resilience of the smallholder farmers, the Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) concept was introduced a decade ago by the Food and Agriculture Organization, guided by three key principles of adaptation to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions reduction and promotion of food security. The paper sought to assess the level of awareness of climate smart agriculture practices and the respective rate of …
Closing The Modern Irish Municipal Wastewater Phosphorus Cycle, Ciaran O’Donnell
Closing The Modern Irish Municipal Wastewater Phosphorus Cycle, Ciaran O’Donnell
Theses
Phosphorus (P) is an essential life-supporting nutrient for which there is no substitute. P naturally cycles within nature. Modern farming practice and food production have altered the natural P cycle. Successive crop harvests remove P from the soil as crops and transport them to urban areas to feed the population. To replace P removed from the soil through these crop harvests, mineral P fertilisers are applied to the soil to sustain crop production. Mineral P fertilisers are derived from finite phosphate rock. The European Union does not have an indigenous supply of phosphorus rock, which poses a significant issue for …

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental organic pollutants known to have detrimental health effects. Using a mouse model, we previously demonstrated that PCB126 exposure before and during pregnancy and throughout the perinatal period adversely affected offspring glucose tolerance and/or body composition profiles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the glucose tolerance and body composition of offspring born to dams exposed to PCB126 during the nursing period only. Female ICR mice were bred, and half of the dams were exposed to either vehicle (safflower oil) or 1 µmole PCB126 per kg of body weight via oral gavage on postnatal …
Propaganda For War & International Human Rights Standards, Evelyn Aswad
Propaganda For War & International Human Rights Standards, Evelyn Aswad
Faculty Articles
Shortly after Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union (EU) began suspending Russian state-sponsored media outlets from broadcasting within the EU because they were spreading propaganda for war. The EU also required social media companies to remove user speech containing the banned broadcasts and prohibited search engines from displaying content from those outlets in search results. The EU's General Court upheld the outlets' suspension as consistent with both European human rights norms and the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which contains a mandatory prohibition on propaganda for war in Article 20(1). …

Where Neutrality Stops And Reality Begins: Why Considering Identity Is Vital To Lead And Class Counsel Selection, Melissa Mortazavi
Where Neutrality Stops And Reality Begins: Why Considering Identity Is Vital To Lead And Class Counsel Selection, Melissa Mortazavi
Faculty Articles
When courts consider a choice of class or lead counsel in multidistrict litigation ("MDL') or class action suits, they often follow the idea of a neutral partisan model. Such a model idealizes lawyer conduct as a blank conduit for client interests. In theory, lawyers should be able to bring their legal expertise absent any personal experiences, individualized identity, and morality outside of practice. But the reality is that neither lawyers nor their clients can fully divorce their identities or moral viewpoints from the legal system. This Essay argues that an identity-blind choice of class or lead counsel, grounded in a …

Impact Of A Respiratory Health Program On Attitudes, Knowledge, And Behaviors Related To Respirator Use In Farmers And Ranchers, Rebecca White
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Background: Studies show an association between agricultural occupational hazards and respiratory illnesses. Personal protective equipment (PPE) has protective effects, but limited education and inadequate respiratory protection are common among agricultural workers.
Methods: A demographic questionnaire and two pre-intervention surveys were initially administered to farmers and ranchers. The surveys measured attitude, knowledge, and behaviors related to respiratory safety and PPE practices. Pulmonary function testing, educational handouts, and respirator fit testing was provided in a variety of settings, and one N95 mask was given to each participant. Two surveys were distributed 3 months post-intervention.
Results: The pre- and post-intervention surveys were matched …

Marine Science Faculty Publications
Air-cushion (AC) packaging has become widely used worldwide. ACs are air-filled, dual plastic packaging solutions commonly found surrounding and protecting items of value within shipping enclosures during transit. Herein, we report on a laboratory assessment employing ACs as a microalgal photobioreactor (PBR). Such a PBR inherently addresses many of the operational issues typically encountered with open raceway ponds and closed photobioreactors, such as evaporative water loss, external contamination, and predation. Using half-filled ACs, the performance of microalgal species Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloropsis oculata, and Cyclotella cryptica (diatom) was examined and the ash-free dry cell weight and overall biomass productivity determined …

Background: Prior sexual trauma (ST) is associated with greater risk for posttraumatic stress disorder after a subsequent traumatic event; however, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain opaque. We investigated longitudinal posttraumatic dysfunction and amygdala functional dynamics following admission to an emergency department for new primarily nonsexual trauma in participants with and without previous ST.
Methods: Participants (N = 2178) were recruited following acute trauma exposure (primarily motor vehicle collision). A subset (n = 242) completed magnetic resonance imaging that included a fearful faces task and a resting-state scan 2 weeks after the trauma. We investigated associations between prior ST and several …

Statistical Discrimination, Sonja Starr
Statistical Discrimination, Sonja Starr

The Supreme Court has emphatically and repeatedly rejected efforts to justify otherwise-illegal discrimination against individuals by resort to statistical generalizations about groups. But practices that violate this principle are pervasive and largely ignored or even embraced by courts, lawyers, and law scholars. For example, many health care fields, in seeming contravention of antidiscrimination statutes, make use of explicitly racialized diagnostic algorithms that make it harder for Black patients to access care than non-Black patients with identical symptoms. Moreover, the justice system itself has embraced numerous similar practices, including demographic and “sociocultural” adjustments of intellectual-capacity assessments for defendants facing the death …

Efficacious Answers To The Non-Pro Rata Workout, Vincent Buccola

he lack of comprehensive response to a recent wave of non-pro rata refinancing transactions poses theoretical as well as practical puzzles. Most market participants seem to think that workout negotiations at least presumptively ought to treat creditors in a bond or a loan facility equally. Yet more than two years after it became clear that debtors would consider non-pro rata deals, and despite evidence that clever advisors might be able to circumvent contractual changes addressed to a specific non-pro rata transactional form, no effort to ensure equal treatment generally has taken hold. Why not?
This essay offers an optimistic account …

What Do Law Professors Believe About Law And The Legal Academy?, Eric Martinez, Kevin Tobia
What Do Law Professors Believe About Law And The Legal Academy?, Eric Martinez, Kevin Tobia
Articles
Legal scholarship is replete with debates about competing legal theories: textualism or purposivism; formalism or realism; natural law or positivism; prison reform or abolition; universal or culturally specific human rights? Despite voluminous literature about these debates, great uncertainty remains about which views experts endorse. This Article presents the first dataset of American law professors’ views about legal theory. A study of over six hundred law professors reveals expert consensus and dissensus about dozens of longstanding debates.
Law professors also debate questions about the legal academy. These include descriptive questions: Which subjects (for example, constitutional law) and methods (for example, law …

Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Insect Pathogens: Implications For Plant Reproduction, Wilnelia Recart Gonzalez, Rover Bernhard, Isabella Ng, Katherine Garcia, Arietta E. Fleming-Davies
Biology: Faculty Scholarship
Despite extensive work on both insect disease and plant reproduction, there is little research on the intersection of the two. Insect-infecting pathogens could disrupt the pollination process by affecting pollinator population density or traits. Pathogens may also infect insect herbivores and change herbivory, potentially altering resource allocation to plant reproduction. We conducted a meta-analysis to (1) summarize the literature on the effects of pathogens on insect pollinators and herbivores and (2) quantify the extent to which pathogens affect insect traits, with potential repercussions for plant reproduction. We found 39 articles that fit our criteria for inclusion, extracting 218 measures of …
