A Statistical Approach To Designing And Conducting Studies In Translation Studies (Ts), Alalddin T. Al-Tarawneh
A Statistical Approach To Designing And Conducting Studies In Translation Studies (Ts), Alalddin T. Al-Tarawneh
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Within Translation Studies (TS), the prevalent research method is qualitative. However, investigating the translation process and outcome has seen an increase in the importance of quantitative methods. This poses a challenge as many TS scholars lack familiarity with these techniques. This article suggests a solution by outlining an effective approach to quantitative research and emphasizing key aspects of such research to address this issue. The critical component of quantitative studies is explicit research designs, which can be created through several steps to ensure thorough and accurate results. Consideration must be given to defining the sample and population under study, as …

Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the complex dynamics between avatars and in-game advertising, probing how virtual representations influence consumer behavior within digital environments. It delves into the psychological interplay between self-perception and avatar embodiment, suggesting that while younger users may treat avatars as accessories showcasing personal interests, adults tend to opt for idealized selves, affecting their interaction with and responsiveness to virtual marketing. The study contemplates the avatar’s function as both a consumer and influencer in the expanding metaverse, considering the escalating integration of branded items in games. It also highlights potential shifts in consumption patterns as digital and physical realities converge. …

The Financial Implications Of Specialization, Diversification, Or Alternative Enterprises On Small Farms: Evidence From Tennessee, Aditya R. Khanal, Renu Ojha
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
In response to survival challenges, small farms in the United States undertake decisions to minimize downside risk or maximize gross revenue. Using primary survey data of small farms in Tennessee, we examined farmers’ strategic decisions on specialization or other forms of diversification and estimated the impacts of these decisions on farm financial performance. We found that farmer’s age, farmland holdings, use of a smartphone in farm-related activities, and off-farm work significantly influenced these strategic decisions. Our multinomial endogenous switching regression estimates suggested that small farms could attain significantly higher performance, around 45% higher gross farm income and a 30% higher …
Using Remote Sensing To Determine Riparian Resilience In Beaver Dammed Versus Un-Dammed Corridors Following Whiplash Weather, Sophie Charlotte Valérie Aubry
Using Remote Sensing To Determine Riparian Resilience In Beaver Dammed Versus Un-Dammed Corridors Following Whiplash Weather, Sophie Charlotte Valérie Aubry
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Beaver complexes slow and store water allowing for riparian growth which in turn fosters biodiversity, retains carbon, and enhances resistance to fires and drought. Given the benefits associated with beaver complexes and the potential they have for climate mitigation, California hopes to reintroduce beavers and restore their habitat throughout the state. However, the impact of high peak flow events on beaver complexes and their adjacent riparian corridors is less understood and requires more documentation at various spatial scales. To better understand the potential beavers may have as climate change mitigators it is important to understand beaver complex resiliency following a …
The Effects Of Different Seeding Rates On Nitrogen Acquisition In Pea–Wheat Intercropping, Aybegün Ton, Erik Steen Jensen
The Effects Of Different Seeding Rates On Nitrogen Acquisition In Pea–Wheat Intercropping, Aybegün Ton, Erik Steen Jensen
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Intercropping may improve the use of environmental resources in low-input agricultural systems compared to sole crops and it is possible that risk may be reduced in intercropping, leading to more stable yields and weed control. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of seeding rate of a normal leafed cultivar and a semileafless pea cultivar (Pisum sativum L.) grown as sole crops, cultivar mixture, and in double and triple intercrops with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on competitive dynamics, yield and use of nitrogen sources from soil, and symbiotic N2 fixation. A randomized complete blocks experiment …
Soil Burn Severity And Environmental Covariate Effects On Soil Health Two Years Postfire In The Sierra Nevada, Julie A. Lewis
Soil Burn Severity And Environmental Covariate Effects On Soil Health Two Years Postfire In The Sierra Nevada, Julie A. Lewis
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Wildfires have been steadily increasing in both size and severity in recent decades. This global trend is most evident in California, especially the North Coast and Sierra Nevada. Although these trends are rising, there is little known about the effects of these wildfires on forest soils. Soil is the 2nd largest C sink on the planet, and the largest terrestrial bank. Without understanding the implication of rising wildfire severities on these soils, we cannot understand how to help protect this resource in the future. Due to the rapid increase in wildfire size and intensity, there is little known about the …

Why Sigmoid Transformation Helps Incorporate Logic Into Deep Learning: A Theoretical Explanation, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional neural networks start from the data, they cannot easily handle prior knowledge -- this is one of the reasons why they often take very long to train. It is desirable to incorporate prior knowledge into deep learning. For the case when this knowledge consists of propositional statements, a successful way to incorporate this knowledge was proposed in a recent paper by van Krieken et al. That paper uses the fact that a neural network does not directly return a truth value, it returns a real value -- in effect, the degree of confidence in the corresponding statement -- from …

Effects Of Structure, Salience, And Working Memory On L2 Processing Of English Past Participles By L1 Thai Learners, Supakit Thiamtawan, Nattama Pongpairoj
PASAA
This study examined the effects of working memory (WM), structure, and salience on the processing of English relative clauses (RCs) and participial reduced relative clauses (PRRCs) by L1 Thai learners. Salience in this research is the phonological alterations required for irregular verbs to inflect into the past participial form. The study included two types of irregulars with different salience levels. Seventy advanced L1 Thai learners took a reading span task and a self-paced reading task to assess their WM level and processing of past participial forms. The hypotheses proposed that WM, structure, and salience would influence online processing (reading times) …

Background: Glyphosate is one of the most heavily used pesticides in the world, but little is known about sources of glyphosate exposure in pregnant people living in agricultural regions.
Objective: Our objective was to evaluate glyphosate exposure during pregnancy in relation to residential proximity to agriculture as well as agricultural spray season.
Methods: We quantified glyphosate concentrations in 453 urine samples collected biweekly from a cohort of 40 pregnant people in southern Idaho from February through December 2021. We estimated each participant’s glyphosate exposure as the geometric mean (GM) of glyphosate concentrations measured in all samples (average n = 11 …
Preventing Undeserved Punishment, Marah Stith Mcleod
Preventing Undeserved Punishment, Marah Stith Mcleod
Notre Dame Law Review
Defendants should not be punished more than they deserve. Sentencing scholars describe this precept against undeserved punishment as a consensus norm in American law and culture. Yet America faces a plague of mass incarceration, and many sanctions seem clearly undeserved, often far exceeding an offender’s culpability or the seriousness of an offense. How can a society committed to desert as a limitation on legitimate sanctions allow such undeserved punishments?
Critics argue increasingly that our focus on what offenders deserve is itself part of the problem. They claim that the notion of desert is too amorphous, malleable, and arbitrary to limit …

Inference Of Admixture Origins In Indigenous African Cattle., Kwondo Kim, Donghee Kim, Olivier Hanotte, Charles Lee, Heebal Kim, Choongwon Jeong
Faculty Research 2023
Present-day African cattle retain a unique genetic profile composed of a mixture of the Bos taurus and Bos indicus populations introduced into the continent at different time periods. However, details of the admixture history and the exact origins of the source populations remain obscure. Here, we infer the source of admixture in the earliest domestic cattle in Africa, African taurine. We detect a significant contribution (up to ∼20%) from a basal taurine lineage, which might represent the now-extinct African aurochs. In addition, we show that the indicine ancestry of African cattle, although most closely related to so-far sampled North Indian …

Despite recent advances in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), there has been limited success in targeting surface antigens in AML, in part due to shared expression across malignant and normal cells. Here, high-density immunophenotyping of AML coupled with proteogenomics identified unique expression of a variety of antigens, including the RNA helicase U5 snRNP200, on the surface of AML cells but not on normal hematopoietic precursors and skewed Fc receptor distribution in the AML immune microenvironment. Cell membrane localization of U5 snRNP200 was linked to surface expression of the Fcγ receptor IIIA (FcγIIIA, also known as CD32A) and correlated …

Candidate Signatures Of Positive Selection For Environmental Adaptation In Indigenous African Cattle: A Review., Sumaya Kambal, Abdulfatai Tijjani, Sabah A E Ibrahim, Mohamed-Khair A Ahmed, Joram M Mwacharo, Olivier Hanotte
Faculty Research 2023
Environmental adaptation traits of indigenous African cattle are increasingly being investigated to respond to the need for sustainable livestock production in the context of unpredictable climatic changes. Several studies have highlighted genomic regions under positive selection probably associated with adaptation to environmental challenges (e.g. heat stress, trypanosomiasis, tick and tick-borne diseases). However, little attention has focused on pinpointing the candidate causative variant(s) controlling the traits. This review compiled information from 22 studies on signatures of positive selection in indigenous African cattle breeds to identify regions under positive selection. We highlight some key candidate genome regions and genes of relevance to …

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the first reported human oncogenic virus and infects more than 95% of the human population worldwide. EBV latent infection in B lymphocytes is essential for viral persistence. Glycoprotein gp42 is an indispensable member of the triggering complex for EBV entry into B cells. The C-type lectin domain (CTLD) of gp42 plays a key role in receptor binding and is the major target of neutralizing antibodies. Here, we isolated two rabbit antibodies, 1A7 and 6G7, targeting gp42 CTLD with potent neutralizing activity against B cell infection. Antibody 6G7 efficiently protects humanized mice from lethal EBV challenge and …

Written Communication From Pharmacy Benefit Managers: Is It Helpful?, Lily G. Cessna, Lynne J. Goebel
Internal Medicine
Introduction: Physicians are experiencing greater burnout due to excessive time spent on paperwork. Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) are adding to this problem by sending excessive mail to physicians. This study examined these mailed communications to determine their frequency and if the physician acted upon them. We hypothesized that few of these mailings would be helpful to the physician.
Methods: From July 2021 to May 2023, we collected all written communications from PBMs to a single geriatrics outpatient physician. We sorted this information by specific PBM, by communication category, if it resulted in an intervention, and if communications were repeated.

Microbial colonization plays a direct role in host health. Understanding the ecology of the resident microbial community for a given host species is thus an important step for detecting population vulnerabilities like disease. However, the idea of integrating microbiome research into conservation is still relatively new, and wild birds have received less attention in this field than mammals or domesticated animals. Here we examine the composition and function of the gut microbiome of the endangered Galapagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) with the goals of characterizing the normal microbial community and resistome, identifying likely pathogens, and testing hypotheses of structuring forces for …

The Status And Prospects Of Phytoremediation Of Heavy Metals, Aniruddha Acharya, Enrique Perez, Miller Maddox-Mandolini, Hania De La Fuente
Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences
The release of heavy metals into the agricultural soil and waterbodies has been accelerated due to anthropogenic activities. They are not usually required for biological functions thus, their accumulation in biological system poses serious threat to health and environment globally. Phytoremediation offers a safe, inexpensive, and ecologically sustainable technique to clean habitats contaminated with heavy metals. Though several plants have been identified and used as a potential candidate for such phytoremediation, the technique is still at its formative stage and has been mostly confined to laboratory and greenhouses. However, recently several field studies have shown promising results that can propel …

Compression clothes are marketed to relieve anxiety and decrease hyperactivity in children with autism. However, few studies have examined the impact of compression for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, nine children with autism were observed during Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy sessions while wearing compression clothing. The participants were randomly assigned to wear compression clothing for either their first five sessions or their last five sessions. Videos of the therapy sessions were reviewed and each child’s “off task” behavior was identified in the following domains: motor, verbal, and visual. In addition, frequency of the child’s repetitive behaviors …

One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. We further tested for conmycorrhizal density dependence (CMDD) to test for benefit from shared mutualists. We found that the strength of CDD varies systematically with mycorrhizal …
