Federalism And Constitutional Hyper-Rigidity: A Comparative Analysis Of The Federalist Amendment Mechanisms Within The Australian And United States Constitutions, Amy Buckley Dec 2022

Federalism And Constitutional Hyper-Rigidity: A Comparative Analysis Of The Federalist Amendment Mechanisms Within The Australian And United States Constitutions, Amy Buckley

The Transnational Human Rights Review

The amendment mechanisms contained within the Australian and United States Constitutions, being Section 128 and Article V respectively, have many structural similarities. Both amendment mechanisms are purposed towards protecting federalism insofar as they require the achievement of more than just a simple constituent majority before a referendum proposal will succeed. In fact, the entrenchment of the Australian and United States ‘double’ and ‘super’ majority requirements respectively were specifically included as a protection for the federal distribution of power originally mandated within the Constitutions of each. Building upon that framework, if the Australian and American constitutional amendment mechanisms are purposed towards …

Mapping Of Freedom Of Information Requests (Foirs) For The Publication Of Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Contracts, Chiamaka Ojiako, Uchechukwu Ngwaba Dec 2022

Mapping Of Freedom Of Information Requests (Foirs) For The Publication Of Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Contracts, Chiamaka Ojiako, Uchechukwu Ngwaba

The Transnational Human Rights Review

Freedom of Information Requests (FOIRs) provide the window of access to COVID-19 vaccine supply contracts in times of crisis, yet for COVID-19 supply contracts, FOIRs have recorded limited success due to barriers which have either been legal, institutional, political or a combination of all of these. Despite State’s commitment to freedom of information and open contracting at both the national and international level, the urgency to procure vaccines led many countries to prioritize public health goals over protecting the public’s right of access to information. This empirical study examines freedom of information requests related to COVID-19 vaccine supply contracts to …

Background: Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia, causes a progressive and irreversible deterioration of cognition that can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, leading to suboptimal patient care. Methods: We developed a predictive model that computes multi-regional statistical morpho-functional mesoscopic traits from T1-weighted MRI scans, with or without cognitive scores. For each patient, a biomarker called “Alzheimer’s Predictive Vector” (ApV) was derived using a two-stage least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Results: The ApV reliably discriminates between people with (ADrp) and without (nADrp) Alzheimer’s related pathologies (98% and 81% accuracy between ADrp - including the early form, mild …

The process of identifying suitable genome-wide association (GWA) studies and formatting the data to calculate multiple polygenic risk scores on a single genome can be laborious. Here, we present a centralized polygenic risk score calculator currently containing over 250,000 genetic variant associations from the NHGRI-EBI GWAS Catalog for users to easily calculate sample-specific polygenic risk scores with comparable results to other available tools. Polygenic risk scores are calculated either online through the Polygenic Risk Score Knowledge Base (PRSKB; https://prs.byu.edu) or via a command-line interface. We report study-specific polygenic risk scores across the UK Biobank, 1000 Genomes, and the Alzheimer’s Disease …

Low total energy expenditure (TEE, MJ/d) has been a hypothesized risk factor for weight gain, but repeatability of TEE, a critical variable in longitudinal studies of energy balance, is understudied. We examine repeated doubly labeled water (DLW) measurements of TEE in 348 adults and 47 children from the IAEA DLW Database (mean ± SD time interval: 1.9 ± 2.9 y) to assess repeatability of TEE, and to examine if TEE adjusted for age, sex, fat-free mass, and fat mass is associated with changes in weight or body composition. Here, we report that repeatability of TEE is high for adults, but …

Effective Connectivity Is A More Promising Biomarker For Brain Health In Middle-Aged Adults Than Functional Connectivity: Bogalusa Heart Study, Kai Cheng Chuang, Sreekrishna R. Pillai, Lydia Bazzano, Owen T. Carmichael

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Background: Effective connectivity, the causal influence that functional activity in a source brain location exerts over functional activity in a target brain location, has the potential to provide richer information about brain networks than functional connectivity, which only quantifies activity synchrony between regions. However, head-to-head comparisons of effective and functional connectivity from functional MRI data are rare, especially among diverse cognitively healthy middle aged and older adults. Method: 100 Bogalusa Heart Study participants performed a Stroop task during functional MRI (Table 1). Effective connectivity and functional connectivity among 24 regions of interest (ROIs) previously identified as activated by this task …

Redox Phospholipidomics Analysis Reveals Specific Oxidized Phospholipids And Regions In The Diabetic Mouse Kidney, Allison Mccrimmon, Sydney Corbin, Bindesh Shrestha, Gregory Roman, Suraj Dhungana, Krisztian Stadler

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

While it is generally accepted that oxidative stress impacts the diabetic kidney and contributes to pathogenesis, there is a substantial lack of knowledge about the molecular entity and anatomic location of a variety of reactive species. Here we provide a novel “oxidative stress map” of the diabetic kidney – the first of its kind, and identify specific, oxidized and other reactive lipids and their location. We used the db/db mouse model and Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) mass spectrometry combined with heatmap image analysis. We analyzed a comprehensive array of phospholipid peroxide species in normal (db/m) and diabetic (db/db) kidneys using …

Predicting Clinical Outcomes Of Cancer Patients With A P53 Deficiency Gene Signature, Evelien Schaafsma, Eric M. Takacs, Sandeep Kaur, Chao Cheng, Manabu Kurokawa

Dartmouth Scholarship

The tumor suppressor p53, encoded by the TP53 gene, is mutated or nullified in nearly 50% of human cancers. It has long been debated whether TP53 mutations can be utilized as a biomarker to predict clinical outcomes of cancer patients. In this study, we applied computational methods to calculate p53 deficiency scores (PDSs) that reflect the inactivation of the p53 pathway, instead of TP53 mutation status. Compared to TP53 mutation status, the p53 deficiency gene signature is a powerful predictor of overall survival and drug sensitivity in a variety of cancer types and treatments. Interestingly, the PDSs predicted clinical outcomes …

Needs-Based Standards Of Practice For The Use Of Forensic Genetic Genealogy In Investigations Of Violence Toward Marginalized Victims, Anthony Redgrave

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to identify strategies by which forensic genetic genealogy can be applied to cases of unidentified decedents who are from marginalized populations. Three research questions guided this study: (1) What is each affected group most concerned about regarding the use of forensic genetic genealogy to identify marginalized unidentified decedents or perpetrators of violent crime against marginalized group members?, (2) How have the past experiences of individuals in the affected groups contributed to their stance on the use of forensic genetic genealogy?, And (3) How do stakeholders’ opinions on the use of forensic genetic …

Self-Regulation In The Learning Experiences Of School Choice Students, Melody Lynn Schmidt Dec 2022

Self-Regulation In The Learning Experiences Of School Choice Students, Melody Lynn Schmidt

Dissertations

This study explores self-regulation in the learning experiences of school choice students who have attended a traditional public school and a charter public school. Research shows self-regulation is a form of non-cognitive executive functioning characterized by many observable traits children employ in their learning environments. Self-regulation development in the learning investments students make relates to school mobility, social identity, and connectedness while navigating their learning amid school changes (Golden, 2017; Langenkamp, 2016). School mobility may impact students by lowering self-regulation and increasing school dropout through compromised social identity and connectedness (Jdaitawi, 2015; Rumberger & Larson, 1998). Understanding the distinction between …

Nong Gu

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

(513 - 581 CE) had been a court official in the Southern Liang dynasty and wrote palace style poetry before he was confined to the non-Sinitic Norther Zhou dynasty. Despite the respect he received from its officials and nobles, he wrote his internal conflict, distress, and forthcoming resign into his poetry and prose, including “Shangxin fu” 傷心賦 (Rhapsody on a Broken Heart), “Xiaoyuan fu” 小園賦 (Rhapsody on a Small Garden) , and “Kushu fu” 枯樹賦 (Rhapsody on a Withered Tree) which he wrote during the first three years of his confinement as a diplomatic envoy.

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Lok Man Lee Dec 2022

Lok Man Lee

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

(Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial) is considered a Confucians classic difficult to read. Scholars have adopted three basic methods of interpretation: (1) to break the texts into paragraphs; (2) to illustrate the ceremonies; (3) to explain the etiquette rules. In addition, scholars of different historical periods have also researched unsystematically on the writing style of This article examines Qing-dynasty scholar Wu Tinghua’s 吳廷華 (1682 -1755) annotations to the writing techniques of Yili in his Yili zhang ju (Analysis of the Book of Etiquette and Rites), including textual variation, words’ sequence, hint, pre-narration, indicating the hidden, omission, …

Background: Spot form net blotch (SFNB) caused by the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Pyrenophora teres f. maculata (Ptm) is an economically important disease of barley that also infects wheat. Using genetic analysis to characterize loci in Ptm genomes associated with virulence or avirulence is an important step to identify pathogen effectors that determine compatible (virulent) or incompatible (avirulent) interactions with cereal hosts. Association mapping (AM) is a powerful tool for detecting virulence loci utilizing phenotyping and genotyping data generated for natural populations of plant pathogenic fungi. Results: Restriction-site associated DNA genotyping-by-sequencing (RAD-GBS) was used to generate 4,836 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) …

The rice water weevil, Oryzophagus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an economically important pest of flooded rice paddies throughout South America, and species with similar life histories are present in many rice-producing regions globally (collectively referred to here as RWWs). Plant resistance is a key strategy for management of RWWs; however, the mechanisms responsible for rice resistance to RWWs are poorly understood. We investigated morphoanatomical and biochemical plant traits potentially involved in rice resistance to O. oryzae. Resistance-associated traits were characterized in two cultivars, ‘Dawn’ (resistant) and ‘BRS Pampa CL’ (‘Pamp’ = susceptible), which were selected from among six cultivars on …

Background: Orbivirus-induced hemorrhagic diseases cause high mortality in wild and captive white-tailed deer in North America. The role of different Culicoides species in Orbivirus transmission outside of areas of intensive animal production has not been established. At our study location, bluetongue virus (BTV) RNA-positive female Culicoides debilipalpis pools have been detected annually since 2012 when BTV transmission was noted in a captive deer herd. Identifying specific larval habitats of suspected vectors at active transmission sites is crucial both for identifying the source of the vectors and for subsequently planning intervention actions. Since C. debilipalpis larvae are known to develop in …

Insecticide application for vector control is the most controversial component of a public health program due to concerns about environmental and human health safety. One approach to overcome this challenge is the use of environmentally benign active ingredients. Among the most promising emerging strategies are attractive toxic sugar baits. Sugar alcohols—naturally occurring molecules safe for human consumption but potentially toxic to insects when ingested, have received increased attention for use with this approach. For this study, we screened the toxicity of four different sugar alcohols on several mosquito species, a biting midge, and a filth fly. Sugar alcohol mortalities exceeded …
