AIM: To assess real-world management of patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within an integrated delivery network.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of adults newly diagnosed with HCC from January 2014 to March 2019. Overall survival and treatment journey were assessed over the entire available follow-up period per patient.
RESULTS: Of the 462 patients, 85% had ≥1 treatment. The 24-month overall survival rate (95% CI) from first treatment was 77% (72-82%). Majority of Child-Pugh class A (71%) and B (60%) patients received locoregional therapy first. Half (53.6%) of the patients with liver transplantation first were Child-Pugh class C …

Purpose/Objective(s): Recent research efforts utilizing knowledge-based treatment planning for the prediction of 3D radiation dose distributions from planning structure sets have achieved positive results. Most ongoing efforts to generate deliverable plans from the predicted doses rely on full inverse optimizations using dose-volume histogram (DVH) objectives derived from these doses. In this study, we aim to leverage deep learning (DL) to rapidly generate machine delivery parameters for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) from predicted desired doses.
Materials/Methods: Data of 50 previously treated patients at our institution with prostate adenocarcinoma who received definitive radiotherapy were retrospectively obtained. All plans were generated with …

Purpose/Objective(s): Machine learning (ML), a type of artificial intelligence (AI) technology that uses a data-driven approach for pattern recognition, has been shown by numerous research studies to be beneficial for tasks across healthcare. In this study, we aim to characterize the commercial availability of oncology-specific AI/ML applications in the clinic by performing a detailed analysis of such devices that were approved/cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Materials/Methods: A list of 343 AI/ML-enabled medical devices that were approved or cleared by the FDA up to June 2021 was published by the agency, and this list was used to …

Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea) is one of the fastest declining songbirds breeding in North America. The Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee support approximately 17% of the global breeding population of Cerulean Warblers at the southern end of their breeding range. In 2009, a survey conducted from 1994–2000 was reestablished on a plot in Frozen Head State Natural Area, Morgan County, Tennessee, to assess long-term trends in density of this species. Cerulean Warbler breeding densities fluctuated annually but did not show significant changes at Frozen Head State Natural Area from 1994–2015, in contrast to longterm range-wide and regional population trends. We also …

The interest and use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology for workplace learning has been increasing and is projected to increase further based insights from scholarly literature, industry reports, and interviews with organization and learning leaders. We present and discuss perceived affordances, limitations, and future directions of VR learning based on interviews with 21 workplace learning leaders across sectors and industries. Perceived affordances include: (1) simulation of dangerous or difficult real life scenarios, (2) interpersonal and leadership skill development, (3) affordability, (4) data and assessments, (5) social learning, and (6) bridging the real and virtual. On the other hand, perceived limitations …

Characterizing aquifer heterogeneity is paramount for accurate flow and transport modeling. In this work, we present a new approach for statistical analysis of hydraulic properties in continuous pumping tomography tests of a phreatic aquifer. The method entails determining equivalent hydraulic conductivity (Keq), specific storage (Ss,eq), and specific yield (Sy,eq) at many locations in the field and then calculating statistical moments of the equivalent properties, assuming they are random space variables. Equivalent properties are defined as the ones pertinent to a homogeneous aquifer for which the head time …
New Jump Operators On Equivalence Relations, John D. Clemens, Samuel Coskey
New Jump Operators On Equivalence Relations, John D. Clemens, Samuel Coskey

We introduce a new family of jump operators on Borel equivalence relations; specifically, for each countable group Γ we introduce the Γ-jump. We study the elementary properties of the Γ-jumps and compare them with other previously studied jump operators. One of our main results is to establish that for many groups Γ, the Γ-jump is proper in the sense that for any Borel equivalence relation E the Γ-jump of E is strictly higher than E in the Borel reducibility hierarchy. On the other hand, there are examples of groups Γ for which the Γ-jump is not proper. To establish properness, …

Crowdlending platforms are becoming an increasingly prominent alternative funding channel for marginalized entrepreneurs to traditional financing. We examine whether the gender bias generally seen in conventional funding channels extends to the funding of female-led ventures in online platforms and how this potential bias affects service businesses. Our analysis of the KIVA crowdlending platform suggests that while online crowdlending platforms exert a democratizing influence on the funding of female entrepreneurial ventures, female-led service businesses were less able to get financing, mainly for larger loan amounts and longer loan terms. Our findings have significant implications for female entrepreneurs working for marginalized/social causes.

Scholars theorize racial apathy is one form contemporary white racial prejudice takes. Racial apathy signals not caring about racial inequality. Invoking intergroup contact theory, we hypothesize interracial contact would predict less racial apathy among whites. To test our hypothesis, we analyze survey data from white teenagers participating in the 2003 National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR). We find interracial contact matters and its inclusion improves model fit over and above previously specified correlates. Specifically, interracial friendship and dating, and having a different race mentor predict the tendency to care about racial equality. Furthermore, any interracial contact and a count …

In this study, propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted to examine differences in the effectiveness of research mentor training (RMT) implemented using two modes-face-to-face or synchronous online training. This study investigated each training mode and assessed participants' perceived gains in mentoring skills, ability to meet mentees' expectations, and overall quality of mentoring, as well as intention to make changes to their mentoring practices. Additional factors that may contribute to participant outcomes were also examined. In total, 152 mentors trained using a synchronous online platform and 655 mentors trained in in-person workshops were analyzed using the PSM method. Mentors were matched …

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Changes in the educational sector are essential, particularly for improving the quality of teaching and learning. This study, therefore, intends to explore the teacher preparation practices and how they are shaped by educational reforms. Hence, both empirical and theoretical studies were reviewed. Furthermore, this research study employed a systematic review approach on 42 articles published in a range of 15 years from 2007-2022, in order to explore teacher-preparation practices and how they are shaped by educational reforms. The paper highlights educational reforms and it illustrates those factors that shape educationreform outcomes. It portrays educators, not as individuals with the mandate …

Background: Hyperglycemia contributes to cardiovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes. We confirmed that high glucose (HG) induces endothelial dysfunction and cerebral ischemic injury is enlarged in diabetic mice. Stem cell-released exosomes have been shown to protect the brain from ischemic stroke. We have previously shown that endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs)-released exosomes (EPC-EXs) can protect endothelial cells from hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) and HG-induced injury. Here, we aim to investigate the effects of EPC-EXs on astrocytes under H/R and HG-induced injury and whether miR-126 enriched EPC-EXs (miR126-EPC-EXs) have enhanced efficacy. Methods: EPC-EX uptake and co-localization were measured by fluorescent microscopy using …
