Remembering Clem Klaphake, Don Paseka

Nebraska Bird Review

Clement (Clem) Klaphake passed away on December 30, 2022, from complications of Parkinson’s disease, which he struggled with for several years. He was born in Melrose, Minnesota, in 1943 and grew up working on his parents’ dairy farm, which included the usual menagerie of other farm animals typical of that time. Perhaps it was the routine of milking twice a day, seven days a week, or the impressive scar on his leg from a boar tusk, but Clem was destined to leave the farm and become a life-long educator. ... After getting his degree in 1971, Clem was hired to …

Ascat Wind Estimation At 2.5 Km Resolution Supported By Machine Learning Rain Detection, Joshua Benjamin Kjar Dec 2022

Ascat Wind Estimation At 2.5 Km Resolution Supported By Machine Learning Rain Detection, Joshua Benjamin Kjar

Theses and Dissertations

The Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) is a C-band scatterometer designed to be less sensitive to rain contamination than other higher frequency scatterometers. However, the radar backscatter is still affected by rain which increases error during wind estimation. The error can be reduced in rainy conditions by combining a rain backscatter model with the existing wind only (WO) backscatter model to perform simultaneous wind and rain (SWR) estimation. I derive and test several 2.5 km resolution rain backscatter models for ASCAT data which are used with the WO model to estimate the near surface winds. Various rain models optimal for different purposes …

Investigating Preservation Of Stable Isotope Ratios In Subfossil Deep-Sea Proteinaceous Coral Skeletons As Paleo-Recorders Of Biogeochemical Information Over Multimillennial Timescales, Danielle S. Glynn, Kelton W. Mcmahon, Owen A. Sherwood, Thomas P. Guilderson, Matthew D. Mccarthy

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Paleoproxy records in deep-sea proteinaceous coral skeletons can reconstruct past ocean conditions on centennial to millennial time scales. Commonly recovered subfossil specimens could potentially extend these archives through the Holocene. However, protein matrix stability and integrity of stable isotope proxies over multi-millennial timescales in such specimens have never been examined. Here we compare amino acid (AA) composition together with bulk and AA compound-specific carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes in live-collected and subfossil (∼9.6–11.6 kyrs BP) Kulamanamana haumeaae deep-sea coral specimens from the central Pacific to understand the effects of long-duration benthic oxic exposure on primary coral chemistry. We find …

Form From Color: Color Generated Form, Kyra Vreeland

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

Form From Color: Color Generated Form evaluates the ability of color to be a three-dimensional and architectural space creator. While complex in history and connotations, color within this capstone is assigned a theoretical characteristic by which forms are generated from color solely. The produced results suggest that color can be a form generator and can have more spatial applications in design. This capstone has the mode of inquiry of a Creative Artistic Inquiry.

There are three series of tests within this capstone. All of which are based on Johannes Itten’s belief that primary colors correspond with primary shapes. The first …

Identity And Placemaking Of Modern Roman Piazzas: Case Study Analysis Of Piazza San Cosimato, Piazza Testaccio, And Piazza Cavour, Lauren Lamker

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

The more we understand the patterns of how people use space, the better we will be able to forecast the outcomes of new public space initiatives. Studying public life can be done in a similar way to how meteorologists can fairly accurately describe the weather (Gehl 2013, 2). The goal of this analysis is to better understand the patterns evident in these successful spaces so that more similar spaces can be developed in the future. Can exemplary public spaces be used to forecast new projects? Rome has a high density of successful public spaces, and this case study will focus …

Tracer Techniques Used To Analyze Spatial And Temporal Processes Controlling Groundwater And Near Surface Water Contribution To The Ruby River In The Upper Ruby River Valley, Mt., Max-Henry Nelson

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Stable water isotopes, δD and δ18O as well as specific conductance (SC) are often used as chemical tracers, or water fluxes, to understand basin hydrological processes including precipitation, groundwater recharge, groundwater-surface water interactions. In understanding the behavior of isotopes in a natural system, quantitative models can be produced to identify volumes and sources of groundwater recharge or losses as well as how groundwater pumping and surface water irrigation affects groundwater storage and discharge. The overarching questions are: i) what are the current spatial and temporal processes controlling groundwater and surface water, ii) what are the major sources of water and …

Metal casting is used widely throughout the manufacturing industry, where detection of imperfections is an important aspect of the overall casting process. This work proposes a system based on wireless signal propagation at radio frequency could be used to develop a model for defect detection of a metal part. A proof of concept was constructed of the proposed system to detect the presence of metal inside the propagation channel. The dielectric properties of the sandcasting media were observed, as well as losses and time-delays due to the introduction of a metal object. The measurement setup was validated using set lengths …

Cerebrospinal Fluid Drainage For Prevention Of Spinal Cord Ischemia In Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Surgery-Pros And Cons, Hesham Ellauzi, Harendra Arora, John A. Elefteriades, Mohammad A. Zaffar, Rama Ellauzi, Wanda M. Popescu Dec 2022

Cerebrospinal Fluid Drainage For Prevention Of Spinal Cord Ischemia In Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Surgery-Pros And Cons, Hesham Ellauzi, Harendra Arora, John A. Elefteriades, Mohammad A. Zaffar, Rama Ellauzi, Wanda M. Popescu

Internal Medicine Articles

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) carries a risk of spinal cord ischemia (SCI) which exerts a devastating impact on patient's quality of life and life expectancy. Although routine prophylactic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage is not unequivocally supported by current data, several studies have demonstrated favorable outcomes. Patients at high risk for SCI following TEVAR likely will benefit from prophylactic CSF drains. However, the intervention is not risk free, and thorough risk/benefit analysis should be individualized to each patient.
