Mobile Health Technology Development: Adaptations For Children And Adolescents With Autism, Caroline Emerson

Honors College Theses

Mobile health technology is a growing health resource that is usually designed for the general population. The existing literature on children and adolescents with autism suggests that their experience with mobile health technology may differ from the general population due to the coexisting conditions and social determinants of health related to autism. These differences can impact the anticipated effectiveness of mobile health technology. The goal of this qualitative study was to learn more about the experience of children and adolescents with autism with mobile health technology by interviewing health care providers, individuals who have autism, and parents of children with …

Behavioral Phenotypes Revealed During Reversal Learning Are Linked With Novel Genetic Loci In Diversity Outbred Mice., Jared R Bagley, Lauren S Bailey, Leona H. Gagnon, Hao He, Vivek M. Philip, Laura G Reinholdt, Lisa M Tarantino, Elissa J Chesler, James D Jentsch

Faculty Research 2023

Impulsive behavior and impulsivity are heritable phenotypes that are strongly associated with risk for substance use disorders. Identifying the neurogenetic mechanisms that influence impulsivity may also reveal novel biological insights into addiction vulnerability. Our past studies using the BXD and Collaborative Cross (CC) recombinant inbred mouse panels have revealed that behavioral indicators of impulsivity measured in a reversal-learning task are heritable and are genetically correlated with aspects of intravenous cocaine self-administration. Genome-wide linkage studies in the BXD panel revealed a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 10, but we expect to identify additional QTL by testing in a population with …

Put Mahanoy Where Your Mouth Is: A Closer Look At When Schools Can Regulate Online Student Speech, Courtney Klaus Dec 2022

Put Mahanoy Where Your Mouth Is: A Closer Look At When Schools Can Regulate Online Student Speech, Courtney Klaus

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note proposes a way to approach online student speech in three different contexts: cyberbullying, online threats, and other kinds of incendiary speech. Each approach is informed by a combination of lower court precedent, historical trends, and Supreme Court dicta to piece together when exceptions to online student speech protection may apply. Each analysis provides an explanation of how Tinker can and should be used to justify school discretion over particular kinds of online speech. Part I provides the history behind how the First Amendment has been used to protect public school student speech and discusses the unique issues the …

Assessing Selective Export Of Fluorescent Ssa4 Reporters, Caroline Firmin, Rebecca Adams Dec 2022

Assessing Selective Export Of Fluorescent Ssa4 Reporters, Caroline Firmin, Rebecca Adams

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

The process of creating proteins from mRNA is necessary for cell viability. Importantly, the proteins that are generated are differentially regulated so that the cell makes specific proteins in response to its environment. For example, mRNA is selectively exported during stress conditions to allow response to this stress. During heat shock at 42°C, in which proteins are denatured, the gene SSA4 encodes a selectively transported protein chaperone that allows refolding of denatured proteins. This study sought to explore the mechanisms of this selective export. To do this, I analyzed the expression of a fluorescent reporter wherein GFP is expressed with …

Literacy Coaching For Instructional Change In Guided Reading: Navigating Form And Function, Denise N. Morgan, Celeste C. Bates, Robin Griffith

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this research was to examine how one teacher’s guided reading instruction evolved while engaged in a job-embedded professional development experience across the school year. The teacher taught and debriefed multiple guided reading lessons per visit with a literacy coach. The authors employed qualitative methods to analyze the transcripts from interviews and pre- and postconferences, written reflections, and field notes from the lessons. Findings demonstrate that the teacher shifted from being hyper-focused on the form of guided reading to the actual function of guided reading. Initially, she concentrated on text level, time and planning, and management, which the …

Mongo Beti Et La Fabrique De L’Écrivain Africain, Romuald Fonkoua Dec 2022

Mongo Beti Et La Fabrique De L’Écrivain Africain, Romuald Fonkoua

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article analyses the correspondence between Mongo Beti, and his editor, Les Éditions Africaines or Présence Africaine, from the early 50s to 90s. At the beginning of his writer life, Mongo Beti was confronted conditions of publication in French postcolonial era. Because of the political ideology of decolonization that presided over his creation, Présence Africaine (both Revue and publishing Company) seems to have not taking in account the real meaning of writing in French colonial country, the ambitions of young black African writer in the new era and the representation of African literature for him. Through his constant criticism on …

Perdurer In Absentia, Armelle Cressent Dec 2022

Perdurer In Absentia, Armelle Cressent

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The purpose of this text is to address questions surrounding institutionalization of African knowledge. By wondering what remained of him when his mother died and by explicitly asking historians to look towards Akometam, Mongo Beti forces his reader to reconsider the diagnosis of intellectual sterility applied to African societies “without literacy”. He also suggests avenues for epistemological consideration by identifying a vulnerable spot in the transmission of African knowledge which is the inability of the young generation of African intellectuals to embrace the philosophical legacy of their predecessors. Finally it highlights the decisive role played by Odile Biyidi-Awala in the …

Mongo Beti Et La Condition Humaine En Afrique, Hervé Tchumkam Dec 2022

Mongo Beti Et La Condition Humaine En Afrique, Hervé Tchumkam

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Although the importance of history in Mongo Beti’s work is well established, research is less prolific on the vision that this Cameroonian writer had of the future of the African people. Yet his work, inspired by everyday life and anchored in the immediate history of the African continent, is strewn with precise reflections on the future of the Black world. The present article explores in Beti’s critical and literary production the foundations of an “omniprésent présent” (François Hartog, Régimes d’historicité, 2003) which highlights another obsession, that of a dream of self-determination and prosperity for the African peoples. By drawing …

Mongo Beti, L’Idéologie Paysanne Et L’Environnement Rural, Étienne-Marie Lassi Dec 2022

Mongo Beti, L’Idéologie Paysanne Et L’Environnement Rural, Étienne-Marie Lassi

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article examines the ideological aspect of the representation of the rural environment in Mongo Beti’s works. It analyses the presuppositions or implicit ideas that underlie the fictionalization of the countryside in order to elucidate the author’s representation of the peasants. It comes to the conclusion that the idea of a new rurality put forward in Mongo Beti’s writing results from the author’s ambivalent attitude towards the peasants : even though he takes their side against the (post)colonial political and economic powers, he decries their cultural and technical backwardness.
