Vulnerable Road User Mobility Assistance Platform (Vru-Map), Justin Owens, Andrew Miller Dec 2022

Vulnerable Road User Mobility Assistance Platform (Vru-Map), Justin Owens, Andrew Miller

Center for Advanced Transportation Mobility

This report documents the development of a prototype Vulnerable Road User Mobility Assistance Platform (VRU-MAP), a novel effort to conceptualize and develop a navigation solution directed toward the needs of people with disabilities (PWD). PWD represent about 15% of the world’s population and disproportionately face barriers to transportation, which represents a critical component to daily life, relative to people without disabilities. One barrier to transportation is the lack of dedicated walking navigation solutions; while smartphones and other GPS implementations have made walking directions from location to location nearly universally obtainable, these generally do not provide routing that takes into account …

A Cradle-To-Gate Life Cycle Assessment Of American Hops In The Craft Beer Supply Chain, Carson Bristol Dec 2022

A Cradle-To-Gate Life Cycle Assessment Of American Hops In The Craft Beer Supply Chain, Carson Bristol

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

The hop industry represents a culturally and economically significant industry in the United States due to the product’s significant role in the beer industry, but little is known about the environmental impacts associated with hop production. There exists a significant lack of specific research quantifying the emissions contribution of hop production, and the work that has been done lacks consensus in the scientific community. In an effort to overcome this, this study conducts a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) of aroma hop production broken into four phases, beginning with propagation of seedlings by tissue culture and ending with packaged T-90 …

Faculty and Student Publications

Adults with diabetes frequently experience diabetes related distress, which is associated with negative health outcomes. Family members are commonly involved in patients’ diabetes self-management. However, family involvement can have helpful and/or harmful effects on patients’ diabetes outcomes. Use of interpersonal strategies to regulate negative emotions may play a role in patients’ interactions with family members and experience of diabetes distress. This study examined the influences of interpersonal emotion regulation and family and friend involvement on diabetes distress among 373 adults with type 2 diabetes. Two separate three-step sequential linear regression models were used to test the main and interactive effects …

Faculty and Student Publications

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are important molecular processes that regulate organismal responses to different stresses. Ubiquitination modification is not only involved in human health but also plays crucial roles in plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. In this study, we investigated the ubiquitination proteome changes in the salt-tolerant sugar beet monomeric additional line M14 under salt stress treatments. Based on the expression of the key genes of the ubiquitination system and the ubiquitination-modified proteins before and after salt stress, 30 min of 200 mM NaCl treatment and 6 h of 400 mM NaCl treatment were selected as time points. …

Gentlewomen Of The Jury, Vivian N. Rotenstein, Valerie P. Hans Dec 2022

Gentlewomen Of The Jury, Vivian N. Rotenstein, Valerie P. Hans

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article undertakes a contemporary assessment of the role of women on the jury. In 1946, at a time when few women served on U.S. juries, the all-male Supreme Court opined in Ballard v. United States: “The truth is that the two sexes are not fungible; a community made up exclusively of one is different from a community composed of both; the subtle interplay of influence of one on the other is among the imponderables.” Three-quarters of a century later, women’s legal and social status has changed dramatically, with increased participation in the labor force, expanded leadership roles, and the …

Litigation, Referendum Or Legislation? The Road To Becoming The First In Asia To Institutionalize Same-Sex Marriage, Tzu-Chiang Huang Dec 2022

Litigation, Referendum Or Legislation? The Road To Becoming The First In Asia To Institutionalize Same-Sex Marriage, Tzu-Chiang Huang

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

In the pursuit of same-sex marriage, advocates in each country evaluate the appropriate decision-making process for addressing this highly disputed issue—litigation, legislation, or referendum. The choice may be partially based on the institutional advantages of each approach, but more importantly, the choice is also conditioned by the legal and political context of each country, such as the authority of the court, the framing of public opinion, and the dynamics between movement and countermovement. Uniquely, all three decision-making processes are involved in the course of the institutionalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan. This Article, focusing on the experience in Taiwan, examines …

Censorship, Pandemic, And The Field Of Power: The Death And Revival Of A Chinese War Epic, Zhaoxi Liu Dec 2022

Censorship, Pandemic, And The Field Of Power: The Death And Revival Of A Chinese War Epic, Zhaoxi Liu

Communication Faculty Research

This case study examines the dramatic change of fortune of the Chinese war epic “The Eight Hundred”. The movie was censored in 2019 during China’s celebration of the country’s 70th anniversary but became the market-saving hero in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Through the lens of Bourdieu’s theory of the field of cultural production, this study argues that the movie’s changing fate is essentially the change of its political, symbolic and economic capitals, under different field conditions. The subfield of commercial films in China is subject to the control of political and economic forces in the field …

Non-Localized Physical Processes Can Help Speed Up Computations, Be It Hidden Variables In Quantum Physics Or Non-Localized Energy In General Relativity, Michael Zakharevich, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2022

Non-Localized Physical Processes Can Help Speed Up Computations, Be It Hidden Variables In Quantum Physics Or Non-Localized Energy In General Relativity, Michael Zakharevich, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

While most physical processes are localized -- in the sense that each event can only affect events in its close vicinity -- many physicists believe that some processes are non-local. These beliefs range from more heretic -- such as hidden variables in quantum physics -- to more widely accepted, such as the non-local character of energy in General Relativity. In this paper, we attract attention to the fact that non-local processes bring in the possibility of drastically speeding up computations.

Graph Approach To Uncertainty Quantification, Hector A. Reyes, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2022

Graph Approach To Uncertainty Quantification, Hector A. Reyes, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional analysis of uncertainty of the result of data processing assumes that all measurement errors are independent. In reality, there may be common factor affecting these errors, so these errors may be dependent. In such cases, the independence assumption may lead to underestimation of uncertainty. In such cases, a guaranteed way to be on the safe side is to make no assumption about independence at all. In practice, however, we may have information that a few pairs of measurement errors are indeed independent -- while we still have no information about all other pairs. Alternatively, we may suspect that for …

Systems Approach Explains Why Low Heart Rate Variability Is Correlated With Depression (And Suicidal Thoughts), Francisco Zapata, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2022

Systems Approach Explains Why Low Heart Rate Variability Is Correlated With Depression (And Suicidal Thoughts), Francisco Zapata, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Depression is a serious medical problem. If diagnosed early, it can usually be cured, but if left undetected, it can lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior. The early stages of depression are difficult to diagnose. Recently, researchers found a promising approach to such diagnosis -- it turns out that depression is correlated with low heart rate variability. In this paper, we show that the general systems approach can explain this empirical relation.

An Argument In Favor Of Piecewise-Constant Membership Functions, Marina Tuyako Mizukoshi, Weldon Lodwick, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Theoretically, we can have membership functions of arbitrary shape. However, in practice, at any given moment of time, we can only represent finitely many parameters in a computer. As a result, we usually restrict ourselves to finite-parametric families of membership functions. The most widely used families are piecewise linear ones, e.g., triangular and trapezoid membership functions. The problem with these families is that if we know a nonlinear relation y = f(x) between quantities, the corresponding relation between membership functions is only approximate -- since for piecewise linear membership functions for x, the resulting membership function for y is not …

Will Nanotechnology Bring In The Judgement Day?, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2022

Will Nanotechnology Bring In The Judgement Day?, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

There are many current and prospective positive aspects of nanotechnology. However, while we look forward to its future successes, we need to keep our eyes open and be prepared for what will really be a future shock: that quantum computing – an inevitable part of nanotechnology – will enable the future folks to read all our encrypted messages and thus, learn everything that we wanted to keep secret. This will be really the Judgement Day, when all our sins will be open to everyone. How we will react to it? Will this destroy our civilization? Let us hope that the …

Effects And Outcomes Of Different Laboring Positions And The Influence From Societal Norms, Amberlyn Heskett Dec 2022

Effects And Outcomes Of Different Laboring Positions And The Influence From Societal Norms, Amberlyn Heskett

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background

Within labor and delivery, every birth is different. Alarmingly, the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate, including death during labor, among developed countries (World Health Organization, 2022). Many maternal deaths may be preventable.

In the U.S., the use of forceps, vacuum-assisted birth, episiotomies, and emergency C-sections are common for women during childbirth. Even though some laboring positions may assist birthing more than others, there often is resistance to allowing various positions due to outside influences, including societal norms, hospital management, and healthcare professional training. Women in labor are vulnerable and look to their nurses for support during the …

Strategies For Reducing Vascular And Bleeding Risk For Percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device-Supported High-Risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, George W. Vetrovec, Amir Kaki, Jason Wollmuth, Thom G. Dahle Md Dec 2022

Strategies For Reducing Vascular And Bleeding Risk For Percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device-Supported High-Risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, George W. Vetrovec, Amir Kaki, Jason Wollmuth, Thom G. Dahle Md

Articles

In patients at high risk for haemodynamic instability during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), practitioners are increasingly opting for prophylactic mechanical circulatory support, such as the Impella® heart pump (Abiomed, Danvers, MA, USA). Though Impella-supported high-risk PCI (HRPCI) ensures haemodynamic stability during the PCI procedure, access-related complication rates have varied significantly in published studies. Reported variability in complication rates relates to many factors, including anticoagulation practices, access and closure strategy, post-procedure care and variations in event definitions. This article aims to outline optimal strategies to minimize vascular and bleeding complications during Impella-supported HRPCI based on previously identified clinical, procedural and postprocedural …

Eureka: Euphemism Recognition Enhanced Through Knn-Based Methods And Augmentation, Sedrick Scott Keh, Rohit Bharadwaj, Emmy Liu, Simone Tedeschi, Varun Gangal, Roberto Navigli

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

We introduce EUREKA, an ensemble-based approach for performing automatic euphemism detection. We (1) identify and correct potentially mislabelled rows in the dataset, (2) curate an expanded corpus called EuphAug, (3) leverage model representations of Potentially Euphemistic Terms (PETs), and (4) explore using representations of semantically close sentences to aid in classification. Using our augmented dataset and kNN-based methods, EUREKA was able to achieve state-of-the-art results on the public leaderboard of the Euphemism Detection Shared Task, ranking first with a macro F1 score of 0.881.

Rare Gems: Finding Lottery Tickets At Initialization, Kartik Sreenivasan, Jy Yong Sohn, Liu Yang, Matthew Grinde, Alliot Nagle, Hongyi Wang, Eric Xing, Kangwook Lee, Dimitris Papailiopoulos

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Large neural networks can be pruned to a small fraction of their original size, with little loss in accuracy, by following a time-consuming “train, prune, re-train” approach. Frankle & Carbin [9] conjecture that we can avoid this by training lottery tickets, i.e., special sparse subnetworks found at initialization, that can be trained to high accuracy. However, a subsequent line of work [11, 41] presents concrete evidence that current algorithms for finding trainable networks at initialization, fail simple baseline comparisons, e.g., against training random sparse subnetworks. Finding lottery tickets that train to better accuracy compared to simple baselines remains an open …
