Algorithms For Compression Of Electrocardiogram Signals, Yuliyan Velchev Dec 2022

Algorithms For Compression Of Electrocardiogram Signals, Yuliyan Velchev

Books

The study is dedicated to modern methods and algorithms for compression of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. In its original part, two lossy compression algorithms based on a combination of linear transforms are proposed. These algorithms are with relatively low computational complexity, making them applicable for implementation in low power designs such as mobile devices or embedded systems. Since the algorithms do not provide perfect signal reconstruction, they would find application in ECG monitoring systems rather than those intended for precision medical diagnosis.

This monograph consists of abstract, preface, five chapters and conclusion. The chapters are as follows: Chapter 1 — Introduction …

The Advancement Of Surrealism: Navigating The Logical Implications Of Surrealism In Poetry Through Time, Brandon Hemsworth

Honors Projects

Surrealism is a complex medium of artistic expression that has persisted through the modern and postmodern time periods and into the contemporary. This project attempts to shine light on the importance of Surrealism by researching the rational implications of its irrational nature. I approached this question in two separate manners: One in a research perspective and one in a creative perspective. This project includes my research on the advancement of Surrealism and 15 poems that I have composed in reflection of Surrealism, Modernism, Postmodernism, the contemporary, and Anti-Realism. The conclusions of this project have important implications that have a common …

I performed a vocal recital as part of my final requirements towards my Music Education degree and developed an additional program including research on the works I performed. The program consisted of biographies for composers Haydn, Schumann, Fauré, Obradors, and Beach, additional context on specific songs, and translations of songs not sung in English. I created this program in order to provide more detailed information for audience members who were interested in further enrichment or had particular curiosity for any performed works. This recital was a culmination of my efforts in the vocal department of the School of Music throughout …

Bedside Nurse Shift Length: Evidence-Based Intervention On Nursing Burnout, Natalie Suzanne Medina Bsn, Kristen Morreale Bsn, Bryanna Whitehurst Bsn

MSN Capstone Projects

With the aging baby boomer population, employee burnout, and lack of quality medical training, the United States is facing one of the most detrimental nursing shortages in history. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Health and Human Services projected the demand for nurses to be much higher than the actual number of employed registered nurses through 2030. Since 2016 the nursing population was widely composed of nurses between 25 to 34 years old. After the global pandemic hit, the number of nurses in that age group declined by 5.2 percent, and nurses aged 35 to 44 have reduced by …

Changing Hand-Off Communication In The Pacu Setting, Alisa M. Berndt

MSN Capstone Projects

Through extensive research on the importance of hand off communication in the PACU setting a correlation between patient safety and hand off report was found. Lack of a standardized hand off communication report in the PACU setting may lead to compromised patient safety and negative patient outcomes. In year 2021- 2022, the PACU there had several occurrences of miscommunication that were considered “near misses” in their incident reporting system. The objective of this capstone project is to investigate if utilizing a standardized hand off communication tool to guide healthcare professionals when transferring patient care to the next provider will mitigate …

Nurses are a critical part of healthcare and make up the largest section of healthcare professionals in the United States. According to the World Health Organization (2020), there are approximately 29 million nurses and midwives globally. The increasing need for nurses is not a new discovery. According to the American Association of College of Nurses, more registered nursing jobs will be available through 2022 than any other profession in the United States. The number of nurses leaving the workforce each year has been growing steadily from around 40,000 in 2010 to nearly 80,000 in 2020. Nursing burnout is a known …

Reducing Suicide Reattempts With A Telephone Follow Up Program, Bailey Breaux

MSN Capstone Projects

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Most people can say they know at least one person who has committed suicide or has considered suicide. The number of deaths continues to rise, and they aren’t stopping anytime soon. Many of these patients visit emergency rooms around the country seeking help for their depression and suicidal ideation. Some are brought into the emergency department following a suicide attempt and their visit only predicts another one happening in the near future. Some hospitals around the globe has tried to stop this recurrence of suicide reattempts by …

Standard Deviations Of Mr Signal Intensities Show A Consistent Trend During Imaging Follow-Ups For Glioblastoma Patients When Corrected For Non-Biological Heterogeneity Due To Hardware And Software Variation, Subhendra N. Sarkar, Rafael Rojas, Evans Lespinasse, Xiang Fu Zhang, Ruth Zeron

Publications and Research

Introduction: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has a poor prognosis in spite of advanced MRI guided treatments today. Routine MRI using conventional T1 or advanced permeability based MRI of GBM often does not adequately represent changing tumor phases or overall survival. In this work, region of interest (ROI) based tissue MR standard deviation (SD) is demonstrated as an important MRI variable that could be a potential biomarker of GBM heterogeneity and radioresistance. Materials and methods: MRI characterization is often qualitative and lacks reproducibility. Using standardized MRI phantoms we have normalized retrospective records of 12 radioresistant GBM patients that underwent radiation therapy (RT) …

An Integrative Review: The Experiences Of Stress, Burnout, And Compassion Fatigue By Ambulatory Care Nurses, Rajean Adams Dec 2022

An Integrative Review: The Experiences Of Stress, Burnout, And Compassion Fatigue By Ambulatory Care Nurses, Rajean Adams

Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

Abstract

Aim: One aim of this integrative review is to highlight workplace issues outpatient (ambulatory care) nurses experience, related to stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Another aim is to bring awareness to and discuss recently implemented tools and strategies to help alleviate these manifestations.

Background: Stressors in the outpatient setting date back to the 1970s when psychologist Herbert Freudenberger mentioned the burnout he experienced while in a Free Clinic. In modern-day, half of nurses experiencing workplace burnout, confess to feeling emotional exhaustion. Various studies discuss the challenges nurses endure in the inpatient setting, but only a few focus on ambulatory …

Nursing Considerations For Post-Traumatic Amnesia After A Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah Grant Dec 2022

Nursing Considerations For Post-Traumatic Amnesia After A Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah Grant

Senior Honors Theses

A period known as post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) often follows a traumatic brain injury (TBI). PTA is characterized by anterograde and retrograde amnesia, confusion, disorientation, and agitation. The duration and severity of PTA is a key indicator of the long-term prognosis after a TBI, so proper assessment and nursing care of a PTA patient is crucial. TBIs range from mild to severe, but primarily affect the fronto-temporal lobes. In PTA, both neural lesions and white matter damage within the parahippocampal region can cause PTA. A nurse must perform a thorough assessment of a TBI patient, but, since PTA is a key …

Discrimination Of Normal And Cancerous Human Skin Tissues Based On Laser-Induced Spectral Shift Fluorescence Microscopy, A Niazi, A Ehtesham, Et Al. Dec 2022

Discrimination Of Normal And Cancerous Human Skin Tissues Based On Laser-Induced Spectral Shift Fluorescence Microscopy, A Niazi, A Ehtesham, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

A homemade spectral shift fluorescence microscope (SSFM) is coupled with a spectrometer to record the spectral images of specimens based on the emission wavelength. Here a reliable diagnosis of neoplasia is achieved according to the spectral fluorescence properties of ex-vivo skin tissues after rhodamine6G (Rd6G) staining. It is shown that certain spectral shifts occur for nonmelanoma/melanoma lesions against normal/benign nevus, leading to spectral micrographs. In fact, there is a strong correlation between the emission wavelength and the sort of skin lesions, mainly due to the Rd6G interaction with the mitochondria of cancerous cells. The normal tissues generally enjoy a significant …

Peninsula Dental School

Abstract Background Dental caries in childhood is a burden on the daily lives of children and their families, and associated with poor oral health in adulthood. In England, dental caries is the most common reason for young children to be admitted to hospital. It is believed that most tooth extractions (due to decay) for children aged 10 years and under, could be avoided with improved prevention and early management. National public health policy recommendations in England include specific oral health initiatives to tackle tooth decay. One of these initiatives is delivered as part of the Healthy Child Programme and includes …

Study Of Carbon Nanotube Embedded Honey As A Resistive Switching Material, Md Mehedi Hasan Tanim, Brandon Sueoka, Zhigang Xiao, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, natural organic honey embedded with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied as a resistive switching material for biodegradable nonvolatile memory in emerging neuromorphic systems. CNTs were dispersed in a honey-water solution with the concentration of 0.2 wt.% CNT and 30 wt.% honey. The final honey-CNT-water mixture was spin-coated and dried into a thin film sandwiched in between Cu bottom electrode and Al top electrode to form a honey-CNT based resistive switching memory (RSM). Surface morphology, electrical characteristics and current conduction mechanism were investigated. The results show that although CNTs formed agglomerations in the dried honey-CNT film, both switching …
