Does Central Executive Training And/Or Inhibitory Control Training Improve Emotion Regulation For Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder? A Randomized Controlled Trial, Nicole B. Groves, Elizabeth S.M. Chan, Carolyn L. Marsh, Fatou Gaye, Emma M. Jaisle, Michael J. Kofler Dec 2022

Does Central Executive Training And/Or Inhibitory Control Training Improve Emotion Regulation For Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder? A Randomized Controlled Trial, Nicole B. Groves, Elizabeth S.M. Chan, Carolyn L. Marsh, Fatou Gaye, Emma M. Jaisle, Michael J. Kofler

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Introduction: Approximately 48–54% of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have impairing difficulties with emotion regulation, and these difficulties are not ameliorated by first-line ADHD treatments. Working memory and inhibitory control represent promising intervention targets given their functional, if not causal, links with ADHD-related emotion dysregulation. Methods: This preregistered randomized controlled trial tested whether two digital therapeutic training protocols that have been previously shown to improve working memory (Central Executive Training [CET]) and inhibitory control (Inhibitory Control Training [ICT]) can improve emotion regulation in a sample of 94 children with ADHD aged 8–13 years (M = 10.22, SD = 1.43; 76% …

Environment-Specific Selection Alters Flowering-Time Plasticity And Results In Pervasive Pleiotropic Responses In Maize, Nicole E. Choquette, James B. Holland, Teclemariam Weldekidan, Justine Drouault, Natalia De Leon, Sherry Flint-Garcia, Nick Lauter, Seth C. Murray, Wenwei Xu, Randall J. Wisser

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

  • Crop genetic diversity for climate adaptations is globally partitioned. We performed experimental evolution in maize to understand the response to selection and how plant germplasm can be moved across geographical zones.
  • Initialized with a common population of tropical origin, artificial selection on flowering time was performed for two generations at eight field sites spanning 25° latitude, a 2800 km transect. We then jointly tested all selection lineages across the original sites of selection, for the target trait and 23 other traits.
  • Modeling intergenerational shifts in a physiological reaction norm revealed separate components for flowering-time plasticity. Generalized and local modes of …

Open-Source Benchmarking Of Ibd Segment Detection Methods For Biobank-Scale Cohorts, Kecong Tang, Ardalan Naseri, Yuan Wei, Shaojie Zhang, Degui Zhi Dec 2022

Open-Source Benchmarking Of Ibd Segment Detection Methods For Biobank-Scale Cohorts, Kecong Tang, Ardalan Naseri, Yuan Wei, Shaojie Zhang, Degui Zhi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In the recent biobank era of genetics, the problem of identical-by-descent (IBD) segment detection received renewed interest, as IBD segments in large cohorts offer unprecedented opportunities in the study of population and genealogical history, as well as genetic association of long haplotypes. While a new generation of efficient methods for IBD segment detection becomes available, direct comparison of these methods is difficult: existing benchmarks were often evaluated in different datasets, with some not openly accessible; methods benchmarked were run under suboptimal parameters; and benchmark performance metrics were not defined consistently. Here, we developed a comprehensive and completely open-source evaluation of …

A Constrained Adaptive Active Noise Control Filter Design Method Via Online Convex Optimization, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu Dec 2022

A Constrained Adaptive Active Noise Control Filter Design Method Via Online Convex Optimization, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In practical active noise control (ANC) applications, various types of constraints may need to be satisfied, e.g., robust stability, disturbance enhancement, and filter output power constraint. Some adaptive filters such as leaky LMS have been developed to apply required constraints indirectly. However, when multiple constraints are required simultaneously, satisfactory noise performance is difficult to achieve by tuning only one leaky factor. Another filter design approach that may achieve better noise control performance is to solve a constrained optimization problem. But the computational complexity of solving such a constrained optimization problem for ANC applications is usually too high even for offline …

Palliative Care Reduces Emergency Room Visits And Total Hospital Days Among Patients With Metastatic Hpb And Gi Cancers, Angelle A. Billiot, Denise M. Danos, Jenny Stevens, Katie M. Vance, Mary C. Raven, John M. Lyons Dec 2022

Palliative Care Reduces Emergency Room Visits And Total Hospital Days Among Patients With Metastatic Hpb And Gi Cancers, Angelle A. Billiot, Denise M. Danos, Jenny Stevens, Katie M. Vance, Mary C. Raven, John M. Lyons

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Palliative care services (PCS) have improved quality of life for patients across various cancer subtypes. Minimal data exists regarding PCSfor metastatic hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. We assessed the impact of PCS on emergency department visits, hospital admissions, and survival among these patients. Patients with metastatic HPB and GI cancer referred to outpatient PCS between 2014 and 2018 at a single institution were included. We compared the demographics, outcomes, and end-of-life indicators between those who did and did not receive PCS. The study included 183 patients, with 118 (64.5%) having received PCS. There were no significant differences in age, …

Acetyl-Coa-Mediated Autoacetylation Of Fatty Acid Synthase As A Metabolic Switch Of De Novo Lipogenesis In Drosophila, Ting Miao, Jinoh Kim, Ping Kang, Hideji Fujiwara, Fong-Fu Hsu, Hua Bai

2020-Current year OA Pubs

De novo lipogenesis is a highly regulated metabolic process, which is known to be activated through transcriptional regulation of lipogenic genes, including fatty acid synthase (FASN). Unexpectedly, we find that the expression of FASN protein remains unchanged during

Critical Race Theory, Natural Rights, And The Fate Of Liberalism, Landon Hooley Dec 2022

Critical Race Theory, Natural Rights, And The Fate Of Liberalism, Landon Hooley

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Is critical race theory compatible with liberalism? I argue that it is not, and that natural rights theory, liberalism's rational core, ought to be preferred as the primary framework to create public policy and understand the law. Critical race theory (CRT) has outgrown its original design as a legal critique and become a political worldview, although it is not developed enough to constitute an ideology or philosophy. It has inspired various organizations and movements that expand upon its principles and propose ideals and policies that conflict with the current constitutional liberal order. Many conflicts between natural rights theory and critical …

A Hug For Humanity: Metamodernism And Masculinity On Television In Ted Lasso, Kennedy Lesley Koford

Theses and Dissertations

The Apple TV+ sports comedy Ted Lasso has been a hit among fans, who flock to the show and its positive messages. The show offers a refreshing tone, one that promotes positivity and optimism even when faced with the reality of a cynical world. By using the analytical perspective of metamodernism to understand its popularity, scholars and fans alike can gain a deeper understanding of core message of the show, which mimics the oscillation between the cynical and the sincere. Fundamental scholars in the emerging study of metamodernism, such as Robin Van Den Akker, Timotheus Vermeulen, and Alison Gibbons will …

Understanding Cnc Capacity Through Production Time Estimation, Kaitlin Bluhm Dec 2022

Understanding Cnc Capacity Through Production Time Estimation, Kaitlin Bluhm

Honors Theses

Landscape Forms is a high-end outdoor furniture company. This thesis was completed at the Landscape Forms woodshop located in Kalamazoo, MI. Landscape Forms initially reached out regarding their CNC machines being the bottleneck and it was determined that the current product standards and capacity of the CNC machines at Landscape Forms were not accurate. This causes issues when planning and scheduling their incoming orders. During this thesis, two tools were developed over the course of two semesters. The first tool helped to create accurate product standards for their CNC machines depending on the different product types and second, a CNC …

Industry 4.0, Zachary Zeitler Dec 2022

Industry 4.0, Zachary Zeitler

Honors Theses

The ultimate goal of this project is to automate quality control processes on various machines which include 3D printers, welders, routers, CNCs, and more. Using the “Digital Twin” approach, we want to automate monitoring, data collection, data analysis, and corrective action. Our involvement begins with building a new piece of software that can perform two specific functions and collect data from cameras. We are not attempting to analyze the data, make corrective action, or design a final version of the physical attributes. Our software provides the user with the ability to capture an image set or a 3D scan and …
