Using Extreme Pedagogy Toenhance Entrepreneurship Education, Dave Silberman, Herman Aguinis, Rob E. Carpenter Dec 2022

Using Extreme Pedagogy Toenhance Entrepreneurship Education, Dave Silberman, Herman Aguinis, Rob E. Carpenter

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

We address the ongoing concern that entrepreneurship education (EE) is not preparing students sufficiently well for jobs in the 21st-century. We argue that many criticisms leveled against EE for not effectively addressing the entrepreneurial skills gap are due in part to EE’s emphasis on the roles of specific stakeholder groups separately (i.e., universities and their leaders, instructors, students, potential employers) rather than a shared focus on developing valuable graduates. Stated differently, there are competing and conflicting “ownerships” over the entrepreneurial skills gap. We enhance current pedagogical methods by offering a learning innovation called extreme pedagogy. Extreme pedagogy takes …

Diet And Disturbance: Seaside Sparrow Resource Use Driven By Oiling And Hurricane Isaac, Allison M. Snider, Andrea Bonisoli-Alquati, Anna A. Pérez-Umphrey, Stefan Woltmann, Philip C. Stouffer, Sabrina S. Taylor Dec 2022

Diet And Disturbance: Seaside Sparrow Resource Use Driven By Oiling And Hurricane Isaac, Allison M. Snider, Andrea Bonisoli-Alquati, Anna A. Pérez-Umphrey, Stefan Woltmann, Philip C. Stouffer, Sabrina S. Taylor

Faculty Publications

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) disaster led to extensive oil deposition in Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, followed two years later by Hurricane Isaac. These disturbances led to changes in saltmarsh invertebrate communities, potentially affecting higher-level predators and the saltmarsh food web. Seaside Sparrows (Ammospiza maritima) are ubiquitous, year-round residents of the coastal saltmarsh affected by the DWH spill, where they consume diverse invertebrates and may be considered an indicator species for the ecosystem’s integrity. We used DNA metabarcoding to evaluate prey consumed by Seaside Sparrows to understand how sparrows responded to residual contamination from the DWH oil spill and ecosystem disturbance …

Use Of Modeling To Support Students’ Learning Of Energy Concepts, Delaney Carone, Ashley Perkins Dec 2022

Use Of Modeling To Support Students’ Learning Of Energy Concepts, Delaney Carone, Ashley Perkins

Honors Theses

This paper presents a method for teaching energy concepts to children to children. By implementing modeling and the predict-observe-explain method, teachers can greatly improve critical thinking skills and abstract conception capacity in young students. The main focus of this lesson is based on the disciplinary core idea of Energy, and specifically on 4-PS3-1: Use evidence to construct an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object (NGSS Lead States, 2012). Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standard 4.PS3.1, the lesson gives examples of activities and tips on how teachers can teach students to explain how …

Larval Ecology Of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus): New Insights From Otolith Microstructure, Biotic, And Abiotic Analyses From The Gulf Of Mexico And Mediterranean Sea, Estrella Malca

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT), Thunnus thynnus, spawn in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and the Mediterranean Sea (MED). Spawning occurs within narrow temporal and environmental parameters. Efforts to characterize growth of ABT in wild conditions revealed a wide range of growth variability during the early life stages. This series of studies examined potential biotic and abiotic influences of larval growth from seven ABT cohorts, and identified several key drivers of growth for this commercially valuable species. A detailed investigation of larval dynamics using otolith microstructure was conducted as follows. First, companion growth curves and stable isotope analysis from the same …

Assessing Broad-Scale Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease Intervention Activities In Southeast Florida, Usa, Kathryn Toth

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Reef-building corals are crucial to the long-term existence of Caribbean coral reef ecosystems, providing both direct and indirect, local and global, ecological, economic, and social benefits. Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) is endemic in southeast Florida first appearing in 2014 and present in 2022. Effective in situ disease intervention treatments using antibiotic paste stop disease progression ~ 90% of the time. Between May 2019 and April 2022, 1,037 corals, >85% of which were Montastraea cavernosa, were treated during disease intervention dives in southeast Florida. This study investigated intervention activities over three years in an effort to make them more …

Recent Data Suggest Rural America Is Growing Again After A Decade Of Population Loss, Kenneth M. Johnson Dec 2022

Recent Data Suggest Rural America Is Growing Again After A Decade Of Population Loss, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this data snapshot, author Kenneth Johnson reports that after a decade of population loss, rural America gained population between 2020 and 2021 because migration gains offset a growing excess of deaths over births due to COVID-19. Between 2010 and 2020, nonmetropolitan (rural) America lost population for the first time in history because more people left rural areas than moved to them and because the excess of births over deaths dwindled. Yet, the latest Census Bureau population estimates document renewed population gains in nonmetropolitan America between April 2020 and July 2021. In fact, the rural population gain exceeded that in …

Interlocking Directorates: How Interpersonal Relationships Build Corporate Boards, Matthew A. Forrester Dec 2022

Interlocking Directorates: How Interpersonal Relationships Build Corporate Boards, Matthew A. Forrester

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In an inductive network analysis research design, this dissertation seeks to understand the influence of the interlocking directorate networks on the selection of directors. Its intent is to understand both what the individual and organizational factors are and how those factors influence selection. A practice-inspired method was developed heavily influenced by my two decades within the United States Intelligence Community to create a common network structure to define an individual director’s relationship to a board in a given year. Then using manual approaches, I developed the networks of directors that form interlocking directorates from that network structure. I analyzed these …

Chemical Control And Understanding Of Horizontal Gene Transfers, Drug-Resistance Development, And Filament And Biofilm Formation, Yuchen Jin Dec 2022

Chemical Control And Understanding Of Horizontal Gene Transfers, Drug-Resistance Development, And Filament And Biofilm Formation, Yuchen Jin

Dissertations - ALL

Biofilms formed by microbes on surfaces are the sources for persistent infectious diseases and environmental problems. The mechanism and details of how antibiotics promote biofilm formation is largely unknown. For instance, it not clear what stages of biofilm growth are promoted to proceed faster than without antibiotics, what phenotypes of bacteria form in an antibiotic-promoted biofilm, and what different biofilm compositions and structures are caused by the presence of antibiotics. Among other effects, antibiotics can cause bacteria to form filaments of living bacteria. Here, we conduct a real-time study of the adherence of bacteria and antibiotic-induced filamentous bacteria on surfaces …

Efforts Towards The Asymmetric De Novo Synthesis Of Lanostanes And Euphanes, Htoo Tint Wai Dec 2022

Efforts Towards The Asymmetric De Novo Synthesis Of Lanostanes And Euphanes, Htoo Tint Wai

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Tetracyclic triterpenoids are ubiquitous in nature and biology, with members displaying a wide range of medically relevant properties and occupying rather distinct regions of chemical space. Members of this large class include well-known steroid hormones and sterols as well as structurally interesting subclasses such as lanostanes and euphanes, among others. Comprised of the tetracyclic skeleton with three stereodefined quaternary centers at ring-junction positions, lanostanes and euphanes present synthetic challenges that are different from those encountered in efforts targeting the structurally less complex steroid hormones. Lanostanes, in particular, stand as a historically important class of compounds as significant attention has been …
