Increasing Equitable Access To Care: Implementation Of Universal Palliative Care Screening In The Intensive Care Unit, Sarah Weaver
Increasing Equitable Access To Care: Implementation Of Universal Palliative Care Screening In The Intensive Care Unit, Sarah Weaver
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: At a small community hospital in Virginia, there is an absence of standardized screening processes for identifying intensive care unit (ICU) patients with unmet palliative care needs, contributing to delayed and unequitable access to palliative care consultations.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was “In adult ICU patients, how does implementing a palliative care screening tool upon ICU admission, as compared to standard ICU admission protocol, affect palliative care consultations within an 8-week time frame?"
Evidence: This project was guided by consensus reports from the World Health Organization and the Centers to Advance …

Managing soils to retain new plant inputs is key to moving toward a sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Management practices, like diversifying and perennializing agroecosystems, may affect the decomposer organisms that regulate how new residue is converted to persistent soil organic matter. Here we tested whether 12 years of diversifying/perennializing plants in agroecosystems through extended rotations or grassland restoration would decrease losses of new plant residue inputs and, thus, increase retention of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in soil. We tracked dual-labeled (13C and 15N), isotopically enriched wheat (Triticum aestivum) residue in situ for 2 years as it decomposed in three …
The Use Of Inertial Measurement Unit For The Characterization Of Multiple Functional Movement Patterns In Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability, Seunguk Han
Theses and Dissertations
Patients with a history of lateral ankle sprain (LAS) may experience different levels of mechanical and/or sensorimotor deficits following their injuries. Although various factors, such as structural damage, sensorimotor adaptation, perceived instability, swelling and/or pain, can develop and perpetuate the condition of chronic ankle instability (CAI), most previous CAI research on biomechanics has considered all patients with CAI as a homogeneous group. Recent research has clustered patients with CAI into six distinct movement patterns during a maximal jump-landing/cutting task. This approach could motivate clinicians to develop appropriate rehabilitation programs for each patient with CAI depending on their movement patterns. However, …
Assessing Perceptions Of Student Engagement And Teaching Effectiveness In A Concept-Based Nursing Curriculum, Jennifer B. Drexler
Assessing Perceptions Of Student Engagement And Teaching Effectiveness In A Concept-Based Nursing Curriculum, Jennifer B. Drexler
Dissertations
Educators are continuously searching for ways to increase teaching effectiveness and improve student outcomes for nursing programs across the country. Educational research historically has focused on student engagement and teaching effectiveness separately, and while there is a connection that is presumed between the two in the literature, it is not clearly stated. An important factor in improving student outcomes and teaching effectiveness is the impact of student engagement on learning and the consideration of environmental factors beyond the classroom. The focus of this research is to determine how teaching effectiveness affects student engagement, and what the level of engagement of …
Cross-Cultural Adaptation And Validation Of Lung Cancer Screening Health Belief Scale, Fang Lei
Cross-Cultural Adaptation And Validation Of Lung Cancer Screening Health Belief Scale, Fang Lei
Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the third prevalent disease among Chinese Americans. Lung cancer screening with low dose computed tomography is an effective method to detect lung cancer. Compared to chest X-ray, low dose computed tomography can reduce the mortality rate of lung cancer by 20% in the high-risk smokers. Since 2013, lung cancer screening has been recommended by most health organizations and covered both by private and public insurances. However, the uptake rate of lung cancer screening is still low in the US, and there are few studies on lung cancer screening among Chinese …
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
Communication ETDs
The model minority myth (MMM) is predicated on stereotypical perceptions of Asian Americans as subservient high-achievers who comply with the ideologies of meritocracy, whiteness, and capitalism. However, South Asian American (SAA) activists and community organisers, the focus of this study, are working to confront and abolish racist, heterosexist, and other exclusionary injustices, policies, and practices. This dissertation seeks to understand the historical influences of the MMM, the challenges SAA activists and organisers face, and the communication strategies they use to negotiate the MMM through their activism. Oral history methods and critical thematic analysis are used to elicit and analyse personal …

We examine the 4 recognized varieties of Penstemon scariosus that constitute a complex of related taxa that share overlapping morphological characters: namely varieties albifluvis, cyanomontanus, garrettii, and scariosus. Modern taxonomic descriptions and associated keys are not in complete agreement on how to clearly delineate these varieties. It is particularly important to understand the taxonomic circumscription of variety albifluvis, since it is being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act. To address the taxonomic position of taxa in this species complex, we examine the genetic structure of 66 accessions of P. scariosus, representing the …

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation in non-tidal swamp is severely constrained by abiotic stresses, i.e., submerged stress in the vegetative phase and drought stress in the generative phase. The development of rice varieties that have dual-tolerant to those abiotic stresses can improve adaptability and increase productivity. Efforts to obtain adaptive varieties under those abiotic stress conditions are being carried out by selecting the parents and crossing them, and has resulted in the population of BC1F1. The research was carried out on April – June 2021 at greenhouse of the Agriculture Faculty, Sriwijaya University. The study aimed to evaluate the growth …

A Review Of The Role Of Pollination On The Yield Of Cocoa Plant, Dani, Dewi Nur Rokhmah
Jurnal Kultivasi
Yield of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) plant, in form of cocoa seeds, is produced through the process of sexual reproduction. Pollination plays an important role in the successful formation of cocoa fruit and seeds. In addition, number of ovules per ovary, degree of self-incompatibility, and xenia effect are also affected the final yield. Those characters are determined by genetic factors. Cocoa flowers that are not pollinated fall within 24 hours and fail to develop into fruits and seeds. Pollination intensity up to a certain level showed a significant effect on increasing the percentage of fruit formation and the number of …

“And There The Pagans Reigned”: Epideictic, Shared Appreciation, Social History, Stephen Schloesser
“And There The Pagans Reigned”: Epideictic, Shared Appreciation, Social History, Stephen Schloesser
History: Faculty Publications and Other Works
John W. O’Malley, S.J. highlighted the “pagan” origins of the texts recovered from classical antiquity by Renaissance humanists. Although these ancient writers had no relationship to either the Jewish or Christian religions of the Book, their writings were nevertheless valued for offering wisdom and moral insights. Thanks to the epideictic rhetorical genre, shared appreciation across boundaries was emphasized. However, O’Malley also avoided rigidity or literalism in applying principles of the past to contemporary circumstances. Ancient documents are one kind of source; the “social history” in actual practice and application of those documents is another kind of source. This essay surveys …

Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma (PSCC) is associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV). The immunohistochemical (IHC) test for p16INK4a (p16) is highly correlated with HR-HPV expression in other SCCs. To investigate whether the expression of p16 IHC or HR-HPV is associated with survival in PSCC, we conducted a single institution analysis of 143 patients with a diagnosis of PSCC and, available tissue were tested for p16 IHC staining patterns, histological subtype, tumor grade, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) by an experienced pathologist. HR-HPV status using the Cobas PCR Assay or the RNAScope high-risk HPV in situ hybridization kit were also assessed. Patient …

Evaluation Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium Thin Films With Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Jeff Serfass
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Fuel Cells using solid oxides for the electrolyte material, or Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), can operate at high temperatures and have many benefits when compared to other electrolyte material-based fuel cells. SOFCs can, however still have problems when operating at these high temperatures. (~1,000 degrees Celsius) At high temperatures, the SOFC electrolyte resistivity goes up making the ionic conductivity decrease and therefore a loss of performance. The inclusion of low level Yttria to Zirconium Oxide (the electrolyte material) has been known to help reduce the resistivity at high operating temperatures. In this study, a series of Yttria stabilized Zirconium …

We examined how temporal expectations influence preference reversals in a delay of gratification task for rats based on a hypothesis of Rachlin (2000), who suggested that preference for a larger-later reward may shift in favor of a smaller-immediate reward as a result of changes in when that larger reward is expected. To explore Rachlin’s hypothesis, we pre-exposed two groups of rats to the delays associated with a larger-later reinforcer from a delay of gratification task. One group experienced the delays as a function of their choices in an intertemporal choice task and the other group experienced delays yoked from the …

Tobacco and alcohol use are heritable behaviours associated with 15% and 5.3% of worldwide deaths, respectively, due largely to broad increased risk for disease and injury1,2,3,4. These substances are used across the globe, yet genome-wide association studies have focused largely on individuals of European ancestries5. Here we leveraged global genetic diversity across 3.4 million individuals from four major clines of global ancestry (approximately 21% non-European) to power the discovery and fine-mapping of genomic loci associated with tobacco and alcohol use, to inform function of these loci via ancestry-aware transcriptome-wide association …

The Little Boy Who Became a Cow is a retelling of an age-old Korean folktale. My adaptation tells the story of a stubbornly selfish boy who lacks respect for his mother. One morning his mother breaks a jar of milk after she is unable to open the lid. They argue after he overtly ignores his mother’s request for help cleaning up the mess. She forces him to head to the nearby farm to get some fresh milk where his selfish ways lead him to steal a magical mask that turns him into a cow. He, in his bovine form, is …
