Examining The Role Of Solitary Drinking In Alcohol Misuse And Functional Impairment Among Post-9/11 Veterans In The Context Of Ptsd, Brooke E. Buckley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Post-9/11 veterans are at increased risk for developing PTSD and alcohol misuse. Many studies have examined the relationship between PTSD, alcohol misuse, and functional impairment and a few studies have examined the context in which drinking takes place. However, research has yet to examine solitary drinking in the context of PTSD. Using prospective data, the study tested the following hypotheses in a sample of post-9/11 veterans with PTSD via regression analyses: greater severity of PTSD would predict more time spent drinking alone (as a proportion of all drinking occasions), as would greater alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences, and a higher …
Experimental And Computational Analysis Of Aerogels And Aerogel-Composites Under Different Environmental Conditions For Biomedical And Space Applications, Sagar Ghimire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Aerogels are highly porous and lightweight materials with a unique combination of physical and chemical properties that can be customized to fit the parameter space desired, for the application at hand. The number of applications that have enlisted the use of aerogels have grown substantially in recent years ranging from biomedicine to aerospace. This work investigates the interaction of aerogels and aerogel composites with its environment namely interaction with two types of incident waves: pressure waves and UV radiation. In the first case, the effect of aerogel porosity and stiffness on ultrasound wave propagation in an aqueous and a non-aqueous …

Study Design: The study design used was a retrospective cohort. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine if intraoperative improvements in sagittal alignment on the operating table persisted on postoperative standing radiographs. Summary of Background Data: Cervical sagittal alignment may be correlated to postoperative outcomes. Since anterior cervical discectomy and fusions (ACDFs) can restore some cervical lordosis through intervertebral grafts/cages, it is important to understand if intraoperative radiographic measurements correlate with persistent postoperative radiographic changes. Materials and Methods: Patients undergoing elective primary ACDF were screened for the presence of lateral cervical radiographs preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. Patients were …
The Symbolic Politics Of Same-Sex Marriage Legalization, Kaden Sinning
The Symbolic Politics Of Same-Sex Marriage Legalization, Kaden Sinning
Honors Projects
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, many commentators highlighted increasing resistance to the ruling. Some observed typical public backlash, but others noted targeted LGBTQ rights bills from state legislators. While much of the scholarly literature suggests that public backlash is short-lived and tends to resolve toward Supreme Court doctrine, less clear is the impact of state legislative efforts following judicial decisions. To help clarify this discrepancy, this research examines the effect of Obergefell on state bill proposals. I argue that Obergefell acts as a trigger for state legislators to …

Lower-Income Countries’ Ongoing Quest For International Tax Justice: A Case Study Of The Oecd’S Tax Allocation Proposal, Okanga Ogbu Okanga, Kim Brooks
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The viability of our international tax system hinges on two things: (1) safeguarding the effective flow of international activities and (2) ensuring that countries can adequately collect tax on the income derived from those activities. Each of these fundamentals relies on a defensible/fair allocation of taxing rights between countries with competing tax jurisdiction (inter-nation equity).
The recent Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)-led multilateral effort to transform international tax rules to ensure that countries can adequately tax multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in the global digital economy (OECD proposal) has reignited inter-nation equity conversations. Although important to all countries, inter-nation …

Confederate Statues In University Opinion Newspaper Articles: An Analysis Of Themes And Attachment, Jamie Nicole Knopf
Confederate Statues In University Opinion Newspaper Articles: An Analysis Of Themes And Attachment, Jamie Nicole Knopf
Dissertations and Theses
Many have asked for Confederate monuments' removal while others argue that they should remain or be recontextualized. Knopf analyzed themes found in Southern university student newspapers on the monument issue and how the statues related to community attachment. Using thematic analysis, Knopf identified six themes across the articles, and found that both removal and recontextualization arguments refer to the ideology behind the statues and the impacts this can have on students. Instances of attachment were used in both removal and recontextualization articles.

Standardization Of A Latent Blood Visualizer Based Upon Dna Degradation, Kailey M. Van 'T Hoff
Standardization Of A Latent Blood Visualizer Based Upon Dna Degradation, Kailey M. Van 'T Hoff
Honors Projects
Latent blood visualizers have been used in forensic science since 1937 beginning with Luminol. These visualizers through different types of reactions react with trace amounts of blood that cannot be seen with the naked human eye. These different reactions produce color that can then be seen by examiners. The four types of latent blood visualizers that were compared is luminol, leuco crystal violet, fluorescein, and bluestar. Luminol and bluestar use chemiluminescence, fluorescein uses florescent, and leuco crystal violet uses oxidation to react with iron in hemoglobin. At crime scenes when blood is detected which includes with the blood visualizers the …

Toxicity And Effectiveness Of A New Two-Part Underwater Adhesive For Coral Restoration, Matthew Rojano
Toxicity And Effectiveness Of A New Two-Part Underwater Adhesive For Coral Restoration, Matthew Rojano
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
As coral cover decreases around the world due to disease, bleaching events, and anthropogenic effects, coral restoration projects become increasingly important. A crucial part of many coral restoration projects is the attachment of corals to substrates in nurseries or reef substrates during outplanting. The effective anchoring of transplants is a critical phase in coral restoration and the adhesive used for attachment is crucial. Commonly used adhesives have several drawbacks: there are long mixing times, low substrate adhesion, and lengthy hardening times. To address these issues and provide an effective alternative for coral restoration activities, a new two-part Mixed Adhesive was …
