It is considered a well-established fact that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a robust, inverse predictor of the risk of experiencing an atherosclerotic cardiovascular (ASCVD) event.[i] Whereas, low HDL-C characterizes an atherogenic dyslipidemia that reflects adverse lifestyle choices, impaired metabolism, and increased cardiovascular risk.[ii]

Ariba Inc. and Commerce One Inc. (C1), two bellwethers with e-entrepreneurship in the e-commerce field, provided business-to-business (B2B) spend management and supply chain services. After having been wiped out by the devaluation of the stock market that followed the dot-com era, C1 is extinct today. Having faced the same market condition and serious competition, innovative Ariba had a different path and was acquired by SAP in 2012. Nowadays, SAP Ariba (formerly known as Ariba) is the largest digital B2B network on the planet. Why did Ariba survive whereas C1 collapsed? The authors explore the external (hidden costs, high-priced software, hurtful …

Pharmacotherapy For Opioid Use Disorder In Mississippi, Amanda Michelle Whitacre
Pharmacotherapy For Opioid Use Disorder In Mississippi, Amanda Michelle Whitacre
Doctoral Projects
The opioid epidemic is affecting Mississippi’s young to middle-aged adult population in a profound way. Pharmacotherapy for opioid use disorder (OUD) is the gold standard treatment. Despite the FDA-approved evidence-based treatment of pharmacotherapy for OUD, rural areas often lack providers available who will initiate and provide maintenance of this life-saving medication. For this doctoral project, a 36-question survey was developed based on a preliminary literature review. The survey was disseminated to advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in the family and psychiatric specialties across Mississippi to assess the barriers to APRNs filling the gap in pharmacotherapy prescribing for OUD. A continuing …

Background
Physical activity (PA), diet, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are related to maternal and infant health, but interventions to improve these outcomes are needed in diverse pregnant women with elevated weight.
Methods
Health In Pregnancy and Postpartum (HIPP) was a randomized controlled trial. Women who were pregnant (N=219, 44% African American, 56% white) with overweight or obesity but otherwise healthy were randomized to a behavioral intervention grounded in Social Cognitive Theory (n=112) or to standard care (n=107). The intervention group received an in-depth counseling session, a private Facebook group, and 10 content-based …

The central nervous system (CNS) exerts a strong regulatory influence over the cardiovascular system in response to environmental demands. Floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) is an intervention that minimizes stimulation from the environment, yet little is known about the autonomic consequences of reducing external sensory input to the CNS. We recently found that Floatation-REST induces a strong anxiolytic effect in anxious patients while paradoxically enhancing their interoceptive awareness for cardiorespiratory sensations. To further investigate the physiologic nature of this anxiolytic effect, the present study measured acute cardiovascular changes during Floatation-REST using wireless and waterproof equipment that allowed for concurrent measurement …

Bacteria can adapt in response to numerous stress conditions. One such stress condition is zinc depletion. The zinc-sensing transcription factor Zur regulates the way numerous bacterial species respond to severe changes in zinc availability. Under zinc sufficient conditions, Zn-loaded Zur (Zn2-Zur) is well-known to repress transcription of genes encoding zinc uptake transporters and paralogues of a few ribosomal proteins. Here, we report the discovery and mechanistic basis for the ability of Zur to up-regulate expression of the ribosomal protein L31 in response to zinc in E. coli. Through genetic mutations and reporter gene assays, we find that Zur achieves the …

A Subspecies-Level Database Of Amazonian Bird Distributions, With Inferences On Suture Zones And Conservation, Marco Antonio Rego
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Amazonia has the largest and most biodiverse tropical forest on the planet. However, the distributions of its species are still poorly understood, even for well-studied vertebrates such as birds. Available distribution maps for Amazonian birds often lack accuracy in delimiting the area where species occur. Existing distributional information for Amazonian birds is often limited to species-level level taxonomy, even though many Amazonian bird subspecies represent biological species. Here, I investigate the geographic distributions of 4,148 bird taxa (species and subspecies) using museum scientific specimens as the primary source of data. To build the data base I use more than 600,000 …

Background: The correct timing of insulin administration in diabetic patients admitted to the hospital is important for the prevention of transient and serious glycemic deviations that could lead to negative patient outcomes. In November 2021, a South Florida Hospital identified an area of opportunity for quality improvement related to the process of subcutaneous insulin administration. In addition to bar code scanning, manual verification of the insulin dose by the primary nurse and another nurse was required prior to administration. Patients were experiencing delays in the timing of their insulin dose and nurses were reporting frustration with the process. Methods: The …

The Jesús María River basin in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, is located at the intersection of Nearctic and Neotropical regions in the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) in western Mexico. Because of its biological importance, the basin is considered a terrestrial priority region (RTP-059) by CONABIO, the institution responsible for inventorying Mexican biodiversity. Several vegetation types occur in this relatively small area (cloud and tropical forests, conifer forests, subtropical scrub). However, the area has been undersampled because of its difficult access and topographic complexity. Based on our own collections, review of museum specimens, and literature records, we recorded 92 species …

Ideological Extremism, Conspiratorial Thought, And Support For Authoritarianism In The United States, Sophie N. Martino
Honors Theses
Since the nation’s founding, Americans have tended to take democracy for granted. People see democracy as a given, believing that adherence to democratic values will persist. However, in the past few election cycles, there has been a trend in support for authoritarianism in the United States – not just with political leaders and figures, but also with individuals susceptible to authoritarian values and signals. This thesis seeks to address this apparent threat of authoritarianism in the United States, delving into possible factors that play a role in the growing support for authoritarian attitudes among Americans. I believe that two phenomena …

The use of nonhuman animals in research has long been a source of bioethical and scientific debate. We consider the oversight and use of nonhuman animals in chimeric research. We conducted interviews with twelve members of embryonic stem cell research oversight committees, nine members of institutional animal care and use committees, and fourteen scientists involved in human–nonhuman-animal chimeric research in different areas of the United States. Interviews addressed animal welfare and conceptual issues associated with moral status and humanization of nonhuman animals that contain human cells. Our findings suggest that concepts of enhanced moral status and consciousness are not very …
Novel Patterns For Nucleosome Positioning: From In Vitro To In Vivo, David Andrew Bates
Novel Patterns For Nucleosome Positioning: From In Vitro To In Vivo, David Andrew Bates
Theses and Dissertations
The fundamental unit of chromatin is the nucleosome, which consists of a core of eight proteins wrapped by DNA. This core is composed of four pairs of histone proteins: H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. The DNA wraps around the protein core ~1.7 times, facilitating compaction of DNA length in the cell. Further, the location of nucleosomes makes genomic elements encoded in the DNA, such as promoters or enhancers, accessible or inaccessible to RNA polymerase and transcription factors. Thus, where nucleosomes are located (or positioned), can play a major role in transcription or other cellular processes. Additionally, histone proteins are frequently …

Coming to the third structural reform: investment rates have lingered around 15 per cent of GDP in the last decade thus constraining the rate of growth. Savings rates are dismally low for a variety of reasons. Private household consumption expenditure is relatively high, and fiscal deficits are high, lowering the national savings rate by at least five percentage points. Publicsector borrowing from the banks crowds out private-sector credit for fixed capital, financial intermediation is weak and access to finance is limited. The footprint of the government has to be reduced and the tax-to-GDP ratio raised to 15 per cent of …

Voices From The Field: A Critical Incident Study Of Teachers' Perspectives On What Helps And Hinders The Implementation Of Behavior Intervention Plans In The Classroom, Emily Anne Cragun
Theses and Dissertations
Student problem behavior continues to be a major issue in schools for both teachers and students. Teachers often feel they are not provided with enough resources to help them manage this problem behavior. Students who engage in problem behavior tend to struggle socially and academically. When classified with an emotional disturbance, students are especially at risk due to the severity of the problem behavior they exhibit (Brauner & Stephens, 2006). This study examined how function-based interventions can help both teachers and students better manage the effects of problem behavior. There are several factors believed to hinder the effectiveness of function-based …
