The QCD axion is a leading dark matter candidate that emerges as part of the solution to the strong 𝐶𝑃 problem in the Standard Model. The coupling of the axion to photons is the most common experimental probe, but much parameter space remains unexplored. The coupling of the QCD axion to the Standard Model scales linearly with the axion mass; therefore, the highly motivated region 0.4–120 neV, corresponding to a GUT-scale axion, is particularly difficult to reach. This paper presents the design requirements for a definitive search for GUT-scale axions and reviews the technological advances needed to enable this program.

Literature Review On Water Desalination Plant Production And Brine Disposal Methods, Grace Kollars
Literature Review On Water Desalination Plant Production And Brine Disposal Methods, Grace Kollars
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Water scarcity is an issue all around the world because people have a lack of clean and available drinking water. One way this issue can be eased and people can have more access to water is implementing water desalination plants around the world. Since most of the water on earth cannot be drunk, there are ways to turn the over abundance of salty waters we have on this planet into fresh, drinkable water to ease the water insecurity. There are many methods out there that can be used for water desalination, most of them involving membrane technologies. The most efficient …

Agentive Intertextual Insertions: (Re)Presentation Of Albinism In Nwelezelanga: The Star Child’S Subtext, Spemba E. Spemba
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The relationship between African traditional healers (sangomas) and persons with albinism is contradictory. Sangomas are rumoured to fuel the narrative that body parts of persons with albinism have magical powers, and so can be harnessed and used by quick wealth-seekers. That narrative has claimed lives and agency of many albinos. There is, however, an emerging trend for sangomas to revert this narrative through media. A good example is Unathi Magubeni, a South African practicing sangoma, who has authored the novel: Nwelezelanga: The Star Child (2016), on the topic. Borrowing from critical ideas on intertextuality, disability studies and agency, this study …

Censorship In Schools: Reading's Position In The Landscape Of Policy Creation, Rachel Beckham
Censorship In Schools: Reading's Position In The Landscape Of Policy Creation, Rachel Beckham
Honors Theses
Censorship is not new to current issues. It has affected authors and speakers for centuries, but it is especially prevalent today, especially in schools. Teachers and librarians are often challenged for the materials they choose to provide to students. Concerned parents object to the materials for containing sexual content, profanity, or LGBTQ+ characters or themes. This study aims to answer the question, “What role, if any, do books containing controversial topics serve in the literature classrooms of today’s students?” To answer this question, the author of this study conducted a literary analysis on the top three most banned books of …

Cello In Film And Television Music, Annastasia M. Yoshida
Cello In Film And Television Music, Annastasia M. Yoshida
Composition/Recording Projects
Throughout the ages, the cello has had a specific role in symphonies, operas, musicals, and pop concerts. In the last century, one of the fastest-growing music practices has been soundtracks to film and television shows. String instruments and specifically the cello hold an integral role within this type of music. In this project I present a study on the use of the cello in film and television show music, using eight representative soundtrack cues. In this project, I seek to do an extensive study of the use of cello within film and TV show music. I have chosen a selection …
Spatial Validation Of Agent-Based Models, Kristoffer Wikstrom, Hal T. Nelson
Spatial Validation Of Agent-Based Models, Kristoffer Wikstrom, Hal T. Nelson
Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper adapts an existing techno–social agent-based model (ABM) in order to develop a new framework for spatially validating ABMs. The ABM simulates citizen opposition to locally unwanted land uses, using historical data from an energy infrastructure siting process in Southern California. Spatial theory, as well as the model’s design, suggest that adequate validation requires multiple tests rather than relying solely on a single test-statistic. A pattern-oriented modeling approach was employed that first mapped real and simulated citizen comments across the US Census tract. The suite of spatial tests included Global Moran’s I, complemented with bivariate correlations, as well as …

Movin Past Obstacles: Implementing A Nurse-Led Mobility Intervention During A Pandemic, Mary Hook, Sarah Glowinski, Linsey Steege, Barbara King
Nursing
Background: Older adults are at risk for losing their ability to ambulate independently during hospitalization due to multiple barriers that limit walking. “MOVIN” (Mobilizing Older adult patients Via a systems-based INtervention), a multicomponent nurse-led mobility intervention, achieved promising pilot results and was funded as a clinical trial in July 2020. The study aimed to implement MOVIN and monitor the change in nurse behaviors and unit culture before, during and after the 14-week intervention period. The challenge was to maintain the integrity of the intervention in the face of many COVID-19 challenges.
Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial design was used …

Developing And Utilizing Novel Biofluid N-Glycan Profiling Methods For The Classification Of Suspicious Mammogram Findings, Calvin Blaschke
Developing And Utilizing Novel Biofluid N-Glycan Profiling Methods For The Classification Of Suspicious Mammogram Findings, Calvin Blaschke
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Biofluids are a great source of biomarkers because they reflect the immune and metabolic status of cells throughout the body and can be collected non-invasively. Changes in the levels and compositions of N-glycans released from serum and plasma glycoproteins have been assessed in many diseases across many large clinical sample cohorts. Assays used for N-glycan profiling in these fluids currently require multiple lengthy processing steps, thus diminishing their potential for use as standard clinical diagnostic assays. In response to this need for rapid, simple, and high-throughput biofluid analysis, a novel slide-based biofluid profiling platform was developed for the detection of …

Theses and Dissertations
A well-known result in spectral graph theory states that if a graph has an equitable partition then the eigenvalues of the associated divisor graph are a subset of the graph's eigenvalues. A natural question question is whether it is possible to recover the remaining eigenvalues of the graph. Here we show that if a graph has a Hermitian adjacency matrix then the spectrum of the graph can be decomposed into a collection of smaller graphs whose eigenvalues are collectively the remaining eigenvalues of the graph. This we refer to as a complete equitable decomposition of the graph.
Psychological Distress Mediates The Relationship Between Health And Satisfaction With Daily Marital Interactions: A Daily Diary Assessment, Stephanie L. Richardson
Psychological Distress Mediates The Relationship Between Health And Satisfaction With Daily Marital Interactions: A Daily Diary Assessment, Stephanie L. Richardson
Theses and Dissertations
Literature has often connected the variables of physical health, mental health, and romantic relationship satisfaction or quality. However, there has yet been any evidence of a mediating relationship. The purpose of this study is to test for mediation of satisfaction with daily marital interactions on physical symptoms through psychological distress. The data is from the Life and Family Legacies Daily Experiences Study and includes 191 older couples over the course of 14 days. Multilevel dyadic models were estimated for both the same-day data as well as lagged data. Indirect effects between the variables were significant, but not for the lagged …

Autonomic Responses During Animated Avatar Video Modeling Instruction Of Social Emotional Learning To Students With Adhd: A Mixed Methods Study, Jesse D. Rhodes
Theses and Dissertations
For those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), social interactions involving high levels of face-to-face interaction can raise stress levels and emotional dysregulation. Using animated avatar video models may mitigate potential emotional dysregulation while learning social skills in these populations. This study examined autonomic data of adolescents aged 7-13 diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), n=5 during avatar animated video modeling (AAVM) of social and emotional skills. This was a replication study with the addition of biofeedback data collection and a change of population. Participants were given three Nearpod training modules with AAVM and multiple-choice quizzes on self-awareness, social …
