Minority Rights, Governing Regimes, Or Secular Elites: Who Benefits From The Protection Of Religious And Anti-Religious Speech By The U.S. Supreme Court And European Court Of Human Rights?, Thomas Keck, Nathan T. Carrington, Claire Sigsworth
Political Science - All Scholarship
This paper draws on new data regarding judicial decisions involving religious and anti-religious expression to map the political beneficiaries of judicial empowerment. In particular, the paper assesses the extent to which free expression decisions issued by the U.S. Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) have favored claimants who are religious majorities, religious minorities, or secular elites. We find the U.S. doctrine relatively more libertarian and the ECtHR doctrine relatively more secularist, but that both bodies of case law extend regular and substantial rights protection to religious minorities.

A Survey Of Mental Wellbeing And Stress Among Dental Therapists And Hygienists In South West England, Georgia Hallett, Robert Witton, Ian Mills
Peninsula Dental School
Introduction Mental health and wellbeing of the dental team has been brought into sharp focus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this renewed interest, there has been longstanding issues with poor mental health and wellbeing in the dental profession for some time. While there is some evidence that documents poor mental wellbeing amongst dentists, there appears to be a lack of evidence concerning dental care professionals. Aims To explore the level of mental wellbeing and stress amongst dental hygienists and therapists (DHTs) in South West England. Method An online survey was distributed to DHTs in South West England via two professional …

One of the surgical treatments for pelvic sarcoma is the restoration of hip function with a custom pelvic prosthesis after cancerous tumor removal. The orthopedic oncologist and orthopedic implant company must make numerous often subjective decisions regarding the design of the pelvic surgery and custom pelvic prosthesis. Using personalized musculoskeletal computer models to predict post-surgery walking function and custom pelvic prosthesis loading is an emerging method for making surgical and custom prosthesis design decisions in a more objective manner. Such predictions would necessitate the estimation of forces generated by muscles spanning the lower trunk and all joints of the lower …

A significant body of literature has been generated related to the detection of measurable residual disease (MRD) at the time of achieving complete remission (CR) in patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL). However, due to the indolent nature of the disease as well as reports suggesting long-term survival in patients treated with a single course of a nucleoside analog albeit without evidence of cure, the merits of detection of MRD and attempts to eradicate it have been debated. Studies utilizing novel strategies in the relapse setting have demonstrated the utility of achieving CR with undetectable MRD (uMRD) in prolonging the …

Advanced prostate malignancies are a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men, in large part due to our incomplete understanding of cellular drivers of disease progression. We investigate prostate cancer cell dynamics at single-cell resolution from disease onset to the development of androgen independence in an in vivo murine model. We observe an expansion of a castration-resistant intermediate luminal cell type that correlates with treatment resistance and poor prognosis in human patients. Moreover, transformed epithelial cells and associated fibroblasts create a microenvironment conducive to pro-tumorigenic immune infiltration, which is partially androgen responsive. Androgen-independent prostate cancer leads to significant diversification of …

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific disorder attributed to deficient extravillous trophoblast (EVT) invasion into the uterus, but the mechanism of EVT invasion remains unclear. In this study, we found significantly elevated expression of microRNA 21 (miR21), which negatively regulates trophoblast invasion and migration, in preeclamptic placentae. Whole-genome RNA sequencing revealed that PPP2R2B, which encodes PP2A Bβ, and the Hippo pathway are downstream targets of miR21. The effects of miR21 on trophoblast mobility were abolished in LATS1T1079A/S909A and YAP-5SA mutants. Moreover, we found that PP2A Bβ dephosphorylates LATS1 via direct protein-protein interactions and thus modulates the phosphorylation and subcellular distribution …

The cancer metastasis process involves dysregulated oncogenic kinase signaling, but how this orchestrates metabolic networks and signal cascades to promote metastasis is largely unclear. Here we report that inhibition of glutamate dehydrogenase 1 (GDH1) and ribosomal S6 kinase 2 (RSK2) synergistically attenuates cell invasion, anoikis resistance, and immune escape in lung cancer and more evidently in tumors harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-activating or EGFR inhibitor-resistant mutations. Mechanistically, GDH1 is activated by EGFR through phosphorylation at tyrosine 135 and, together with RSK2, enhances the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) activity via CaMKIV signaling, thereby promoting metastasis. Co-targeting RSK2 and GDH1 …

Fracture Toughness Of Electrospun Fibrous Mats, Annabella Mascot
Fracture Toughness Of Electrospun Fibrous Mats, Annabella Mascot
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Fiber reinforced composite hydrogels have become a popular material used in tissue engineering in recent years due to their robust nature under tension and biocompatibility qualities [1]. However, little is known of the fracture mechanics of the fiber reinforcements themselves (which are typically created of Electrospun materials, a process in which a high voltage differential is applied to a polymer solution, creating a jet of nanofibers that collect into a mat- like material) [2]. This study provides ana analysis of the fracture toughness of two Electrospun materials: one created from a 100 bloom strength gelatin solution, and one created from …

Asian Powers And A Transitioning Gulf Order, Jonathan Fulton

The Gulf regional security complex is shaped by intense competition between regional states and US military preponderance. American security cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council member states has sustained a status quo that has allowed the Asian countries studied in this Special Issue – China, India, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea – to advance their interests without significant contributions to regional stability. As the US signals intentions to reduce its security commitments to the region, the perception of hegemonic retreat will influence the external partnerships Gulf states choose as well as the regional policies that these Asian countries will adopt. …
Medical And Socioeconomic Predictors Of Psychosocial Functioning In Pediatric Hydrocephalus, Vanessa Wall
Medical And Socioeconomic Predictors Of Psychosocial Functioning In Pediatric Hydrocephalus, Vanessa Wall
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrocephalus can impact all areas of health, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning. Etiology can be a major factor in health outcomes, but prior research on psychosocial functioning in hydrocephalus has been with limited etiologies. This study examined psychosocial functioning using the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) and the Hydrocephalus Outcome Questionnaire (HOQ) in children aged 5-17 years old. BASC-3 and HOQ parent report scores were compared between hydrocephalus etiologies. Medical factors (number of CSF diversion procedures, history of seizures, and years with hydrocephalus) and SES factors (family income, parent education, and parent occupational status) were examined …
Production Effect And Recall, Lexi Long, Kayla Zevenbergen
Production Effect And Recall, Lexi Long, Kayla Zevenbergen
Student Work
The production effect, that producing words by saying them aloud can yield strong memory improvements relative to silent reading, was tested by presenting two short word lists read silently or aloud by college student participants with testing free recall. The results were not significant, possibly as a result of pure-list design, where a whole list was either read silently or aloud rather than some words read silently and some aloud on a single list, and too short of a distraction between study and recall.
The Fall Of The Pakatan Harapan (Ph): Contesting Nationalism In Malaysia, Cheng Kidd Sun
The Fall Of The Pakatan Harapan (Ph): Contesting Nationalism In Malaysia, Cheng Kidd Sun
Honors Theses
The collapse of the 22 months-old Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition-government in 2020 was the ultimate manifestation of contestations over nationalism that have continued in Malaysia since the nation’s inception more than six decades ago. The “middle ground” platform — a political moderation strategy to win across ethnic lines to obtain multiethnic support — that helped the PH coalition to win the 14th Malaysian General Election was shattered due to identity tensions. The current political discourse has persistently insisted that the betrayal of politicians and political parties, along with economic insecurity and media fragmentation, had contributed to the downfall of this …

Leadership And Paradox: The Role Of Servant-Leadership In Recognizing, Accepting, And Responding To Paradox, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
As much as we would like to live in a world that is logical, straightforward, and simple, this is not the world in which we live. The world we inhabit is full of inconsistency, irony, and paradox. Improvement requires change, but the security needed to navigate change is rooted in stability. Diversity is both a powerful force for creativity and community and a source of tremendous myopia and conflict. We engage in in-depth strategic planning knowing that much of what we do to navigate our world once our plans are set involves deviating from those plans; and yet, the existence …
Servant-Leaders As Co-Laborers: A Field Philosophy Model, Jae Webb
Servant-Leaders As Co-Laborers: A Field Philosophy Model, Jae Webb
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In 2013, Professor R. Edward Freeman joked about his father’s sarcastic witticism in response to his choice of career. The joke is not that philosophy is a feckless art, but rather that its modern practice has been relegated to the realm of theory, with incredibly salient subject matter but a practice that is seemingly ineffectual in the everyday world. Justice is one such area of interest for philosophers; however, abstract theoretical or philosophical justice, especially in relation to environmental resources and in consideration of environmental relationships, is increasingly meaningless for contemporary society. Environmental injustice is lived and experienced, it is …

The fifty-four mile march from Selma to Montgomery through rural Alabama holds sacred space both geographically as well as on the list of the most iconic moments of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Thanks to the ongoing public service of Rep. John Lewis, who as a young man aided in organizing that march, the route is now a National Historic Trail offering interpretive centers and recreation areas for those seeking to learn from the trail blazing leaders of this country’s struggle for equity (National Park Service, 2020). Two marches bookend the trail’s history. The first, better known …
A Conceptual Model For Community-Building Through Servant-Leadership At Different Organizational Levels, Kasey N. Morris, Kevin J. Hurt
A Conceptual Model For Community-Building Through Servant-Leadership At Different Organizational Levels, Kasey N. Morris, Kevin J. Hurt
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Community lays the foundation for a strong, flourishing society. It interconnects individuals, organizations, and societies by encouraging shared vision and mutual respect among all parties involved. The term community has two primary uses: (1) geographic and (2) relational, where geographic describes community as a physical location while relational refers to a community in terms of its psychological closeness to and quality of relationships with others (Gusfield, 1975). McMillan and Chavis (1986) build on the relational concept, stating that a “sense of community is a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to …
Love In Basketball: Transforming Inappropriate Power In Men's College Basketball Coaching Through A Servant-Led Response And Companionate Love, Adam Gierlach
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In the summer of 2003, the Baylor University’s men’s basketball program was ripped apart when student-athlete Carlton Dotson murdered his teammate and roommate, Patrick Dennehy. While the details surrounding the events are still unknown, the abhorrent tale, which weaves a tapestry of drug use, gun violence, and unstable behavior, was held as an example of the moral decay of big-money college sports. And it remains the only known case of a student-athlete killing a teammate in the history of U.S. intercollegiate athletics (Wise, 2008). The story fails to simply end with tragic violence; investigations revealed deception, lies, manipulation, and an …

A bus seat in the first Colored row, an unusual flood of White commuters, a testy bus driver, a recently minted young minister, and a U.S. court order for desegregation, none of these are static items. Each is a happening in itself. Each is the product of a precipitating flood of moments leading up to an event or more than an event, a protracted event that history has dubbed the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On the other side of the 381-day ordeal Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as the nationally recognized leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC) (Williams, 1996/2009). …

Servant-Leadership At Servicemaster: A Commitment To Love, Development, And Diversity, Helen H. Chung
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In society and business, there is increased energy and focus on caring and inclusive forms of leadership. An emphasis on control and exchange has shifted to more personalized forms, including but not limited to transformational, authentic, ethical, and spiritual leadership. Servant-leadership in particular is gaining traction as a practice that potentially facilitates multiple benefits for organizations and individuals. While servant-leadership ideals and practices have resonated with religious, non-profit, and educational institutions, they have also emerged in the for-profit business sector. In management scholarship, curiosity about the model in the 1990s has evolved into an earnest examination of the framework (Eva …
