Worlds Of Their Own: Narrative World-Making In Eighteenth-Century British Women’S Literature, Lisa Renee Brune Dec 2022

Worlds Of Their Own: Narrative World-Making In Eighteenth-Century British Women’S Literature, Lisa Renee Brune

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation argues that female writers in the eighteenth century engaged in fictional acts of world-making. Departing from the new modes of realist writing and the established precedents of romance, such female writers as Eliza Haywood, Charlotte Lennox, Sarah Scott, Sarah Fielding, and Jane Collier created a distinctive mode of utopian writing. They believed that fiction was not restricted to the job of representation but could imagine unrealized social possibilities. The strategies of fictional world-making I analyze include the deployment of romance scripts to change given structures of courtship, the repeated use of romance plot devices and character types to …

Scholastic A Cappella And The Construction Of Whiteness, Community, And Power, Daniel Fister Dec 2022

Scholastic A Cappella And The Construction Of Whiteness, Community, And Power, Daniel Fister

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Vocal-only student ensembles who cover contemporary popular music at most U.S. high schools and universities, known as a cappella groups, mold students as musical listeners and performers. Though predominantly composed of liberal and progressive people who value diversity and inclusion, a cappella communities perpetuate racialized inequities of sound and representation. I analyze how race, particularly whiteness, shapes the intersecting communities of scholastic a cappella through ideologies of sound (i.e. singing and arranging styles), social structures (i.e. audition processes, competition policies, and judging rubrics), and discourses (how a range of a cappella practitioners discuss, or not, social categories such as race …

The Impact Of Nucleolar Stress On Thymocyte Development And T Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Transformation, Joseph Ryan Krambs Dec 2022

The Impact Of Nucleolar Stress On Thymocyte Development And T Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Transformation, Joseph Ryan Krambs

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Increased Notch signaling is thought to be central to T-ALL pathogenesis, with activatingmutations of NOTCH1 in 60% of cases, and Notch pathway activation due to mutations in FBXW7 in an additional 15% of cases. Increased Notch signaling results in markedly increased ribosome biogenesis, inducing a negative feedback loop called the nucleolar stress pathway. This is an evolutionarily conserved homeostatic pathway that is triggered by excessive ribosome biogenesis that serves to limit rRNA synthesis, protein translation, and ultimately cell growth. CDKN2A, encoding both ARF and INK4A, plays a key role in the nucleolar stress pathway. Activation of ARF and INK4A inhibits …

A Synthesis-Based Approach To The Study Of Fe(Ii) Oxidation In Smectites, Robert Joe Kupper Ii Dec 2022

A Synthesis-Based Approach To The Study Of Fe(Ii) Oxidation In Smectites, Robert Joe Kupper Ii

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Smectite clay minerals are present in diverse environments on Earth as a major product of silicate weathering. Although smectites are compositionally varied, they almost always incorporate iron. Iron-bearing smectites are an important component of the biogeochemical iron cycle, serving as a major iron fraction in many soils and altered rocks as well as participating in redox reactions within the surrounding environment. Iron incorporates into smectites in the ferric [Fe(III)] form at the modern, oxygenated surface of Earth but clays forming in anoxic settings instead incorporate ferrous iron [Fe(II)]. Owing to their ubiquity at the surface of the modern Earth, the …

Kernel Estimation Of Spot Volatility And Its Application In Volatility Functional Estimation, Bei Wu Dec 2022

Kernel Estimation Of Spot Volatility And Its Application In Volatility Functional Estimation, Bei Wu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

It\^o semimartingale models for the dynamics of asset returns have been widely studied in financial econometrics. A key component of the model, spot volatility, plays a crucial role in option pricing, portfolio management, and financial risk assessment. In this dissertation, we consider three problems related to the estimation of spot volatility using high-frequency asset returns. We first revisit the problem of estimating the spot volatility of an It\^o semimartingale using a kernel estimator. We prove a Central Limit Theorem with an optimal convergence rate for a general two-sided kernel under quite mild assumptions, which includes leverage effects and jumps of …

Geometry And Dynamics Of Rolling Systems, Bowei Zhao Dec 2022

Geometry And Dynamics Of Rolling Systems, Bowei Zhao

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Billiard systems, broadly speaking, may be regarded as models of mechanical systems in which rigid parts interact through elastic impulsive collision forces. When it is desired or necessary to account for linear/angular momentum exchange in collisions involving a spherical body, a type of billiard system often referred to as no-slip has been used. Previous work indicated that no-slip billiards resemble non-holonomic systems, specifically, systems consisting of a ball rolling on surface. In prior research, such connections were only observed numerically and were restricted to very special surfaces. In this thesis, it is shown that no-slip billiard and rolling systems are …

Contribution To Data Science: Time Series, Uncertainty Quantification And Applications, Dhrubajyoti Ghosh Dec 2022

Contribution To Data Science: Time Series, Uncertainty Quantification And Applications, Dhrubajyoti Ghosh

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Time series analysis is an essential tool in modern world statistical analysis, with a myriad of real data problems having temporal components that need to be studied to gain a better understanding of the temporal dependence structure in the data. For example, in the stock market, it is of significant importance to identify the ups and downs of the stock prices, for which time series analysis is crucial. Most of the existing literature on time series deals with linear time series, or with Gaussianity assumption. However, there are multiple instances where the time series shows nonlinear trends, or when the …

Truncated Realized Variations Of Lévy Models: Optimality, Debiasing, And Implementation Approaches, Yuchen Han Dec 2022

Truncated Realized Variations Of Lévy Models: Optimality, Debiasing, And Implementation Approaches, Yuchen Han

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Statistical inference for stochastic processes under high-frequency observations has been an active research area in econometrics and financial statistics for over twenty years. In this thesis, we consider some aspects related to the estimation of the volatility of an Itô semimartingale in the presence of Lévy-type jumps, which is of fundamental importance in derivatives pricing evaluation, risk management and portfolio allocation. The main technique we use is the Truncated Realized Variation (TRV) that is both rate- and variance-efficient, in the Cramer-Rao lower bound sense, when jumps are of bounded variation.Motivated by recent results that state that the optimal threshold parameter, …

Canonical And Noncanonical Mechanisms Of Resistance To Arginine Starvation In Cancer, Leonard Christopher Rogers Dec 2022

Canonical And Noncanonical Mechanisms Of Resistance To Arginine Starvation In Cancer, Leonard Christopher Rogers

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The enzyme argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1) catalyzes the condensation of citrulline and aspartate into argininosuccinate as part of the urea cycle and citrulline-nitric oxide cycle. This reaction is essential for mammals to synthesize the amino acid arginine, which is required for all cells. Nearly all human tissues express at least some ASS1, but they import most of their arginine from the extracellular space after it is produced and released by the kidneys. Most solid tumors lack a functional level of ASS1, including over 85% of sarcomas, which are cancers of connective tissues. Published evidence suggests that this provides a proliferation …

Using Proteomics To Discover New Connections In The Arabidopsis Circadian Clock, Maria Lynn Sorkin Dec 2022

Using Proteomics To Discover New Connections In The Arabidopsis Circadian Clock, Maria Lynn Sorkin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The plant circadian clock is an endogenous timekeeping mechanism that uses daylength and temperature cycles to synchronize internal physiology with the external environment. Much of our understanding of the clock in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana comes from genetic approaches. In this thesis, I use affinity purification coupled with mass spectrometry (APMS) to identify protein-protein interactions for core clock components on a proteomic scale. I developed and optimized a protocol to perform APMS on a core set of circadian clock proteins: CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 (CCA1), LATE ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL (LHY), PSEUDORESPONSE REGULATOR 5 (PRR5), PRR7, PRR9, TIMING OF CAB 1 …

Local Spectroscopy Data Infrastructure: Solid State Nmr Crystallography With Experiment, First-Principal Analysis And Machine Learning, He Sun

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Solid-state magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for obtaining precise information about the local bonding and morphology of materials. The detailed local structure of crystalline materials cannot be easily solved by traditional experimental methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). SSNMR combined with first principal calculation methods such as density functional theory (DFT) can be of great use in this research area. The methodology that is called “NMR crystallography” today has been widely applied to the determination of a wide range of solid materials with an increasing amount of computationally simulated NMR spectra. The construction of a well-established computational …

Essays In Microeconomics, Lintao Ye Dec 2022

Essays In Microeconomics, Lintao Ye

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation has four chapters. The first chapter studies the testable implications of stable weighted (hedonic) coalitions. The second chapter explores an extension of Bayesian persuasion where the receiver can acquire additional information after receiving information from the sender. The third chapter studies observable implications when a decision-maker endogenously forms consideration sets. The last chapter examines weighted network formation where agents have social status concerns. Omitted proofs in each chapter are presented in the last section of each chapter. In the first chapter, we study the testable implications of a stable profile of weighted coalitions. We then apply our result to …

Analyzing The Interconnectedness Of The Human Genome, Nicholas Jacobs Dec 2022

Analyzing The Interconnectedness Of The Human Genome, Nicholas Jacobs

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The human genome is much more interconnected than many people realize. In this thesis, I will outline two efforts to portray this idea. First, I will seek to display that cell fitness is an omniphenotype. That is to say, cell fitness can be used to determine whether an unknown factor interacts with a known factor for any phenotype. The human genome is sufficiently interconnected that if two factors interact with one another then that can be reflected by a multiplicative change in cell fitness. This change in fitness can be used to determine if a new factor of interest is …

Inferring Adaptation In Social Microbes From Experimental Evolution Under Relaxed Selection, Tyler John Larsen Dec 2022

Inferring Adaptation In Social Microbes From Experimental Evolution Under Relaxed Selection, Tyler John Larsen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Microbes exist against a backdrop of other organisms, and the interactions between microbes have major consequences on their traits, their evolution, and their impact on the world. Microbial interactions and the adaptations that enable them are extremely diverse – they can unlock abilities beyond the reach of individual cells or lead to a population’s destruction, they can be temporary or permanent, they can be between genetically identical cells or different species entirely. The first chapter of this dissertation reviews microbial interactions and the related concept of the evolution of conflict and cooperation. To be certain a trait is an adaptation at …

Dysregulation Of Gene Expression In Non-Photosensitive Trichothiodystrophy, Brittany Townley Dec 2022

Dysregulation Of Gene Expression In Non-Photosensitive Trichothiodystrophy, Brittany Townley

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The pre-mRNA life cycle requires intron processing; yet, how intron processing defects influence splicing and gene expression is unclear. Here, we find TTDN1, which is frequently mutated in non-photosensitive trichothiodystrophy (NP-TTD), functionally links intron lariat processing to the spliceosome. The conserved TTDN1 C-terminal region directly binds lariat debranching enzyme DBR1, while its N-terminal intrinsically disordered region (IDR) binds the intron binding complex (IBC). The IDR forms condensates in vitro and is needed for IBC interaction. TTDN1 loss causes significant intron lariat accumulation, as well as splicing and gene expression defects, mirroring phenotypes observed in NP-TTD patient cells. Ttdn1∆/∆ mice recapitulate …

Crisisready's Novel Framework For Transdisciplinary Translation: Case-Studies In Wildfire And Hurricane Response, Andrew Schroeder, Caleb Dresser, Akash Yadav, Jennifer Chan, Shenyue Jia, Caroline Buckee, Satchit Balsari

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Extreme weather events including wildfires and hurricanes are becoming increasingly hazardous due to climate change, and often result in transient or permanent population displacements. Disaster-related disruptions in infrastructure, workforce, wages, and social networks can combine with population displacements to result in interruptions in health care access and prolonged impacts on morbidity and mortality. The data needed to make health systems and emergency management approaches more resilient to these hazards, and more responsive to the needs of affected populations, are sequestered in silos across private corporations and public agencies. In two case studies, we describe how our research team at CrisisReady …

Topics In International Finance, Jonathan Lennon Hsu

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on two main unanswered questions that lie at the intersection between international financing, international trade, and supply chains. Firstly, to what extent can international trade networks offer borrowing opportunities for firms that face significant barriers in traditional financing markets? Second, what are the potential impacts of financial globalization on firms’ borrowing and extension of trade credit?

The first chapter seeks to answer the first research question listed above: to what extentcan international trade networks offer borrowing opportunities for firms that face significant barriers in traditional financing markets? I show that firms use their trade flows to borrow …

Examination Of The Role Of Peer Effect On Board Diversity Among Us-Listed Companies, Liyang Wang Dec 2022

Examination Of The Role Of Peer Effect On Board Diversity Among Us-Listed Companies, Liyang Wang

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, government mandates and investor activism influence board diversity in the United States. This study proposes peer effects as a third important determinant of board diversity. The results suggest that companies consider the progress made by their peers when deciding their own diversity. Interestingly, companies only match the performance of their peers and will spend comparable efforts in improving their diversity according to their peer's progress. Meanwhile, the peer effect has grown stronger in recent years, and companies are more likely to track the performance of mid-level peers. The results provide evidence on a new channel that can affect board …

Infrared Imaging Of Water Condensation On Hydrophobic, Hydrophilic, Superhydrophobic, And Lubricant-Infused Surfaces., Yufan Wu

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

This project studied condensation on a lubricant-infused surface, a hydrophobic surface, a hydrophilic surface, and a superhydrophobic surface, during which the temperature gradient and movements of droplets were recorded. Dropwise condensation behaves differently across samples with different types of coating. On a hydrophilic surface, droplets have a tendency to coalesce and wet the surface. A water film will form as condensation equilibrates. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces tend not to be wetted by droplets, which stay distinct during condensation. On lubricant-infused surfaces, the high droplet mobility on the lubricant helps the droplets to retain their circular shape and promote long-term stable …

Ceria Defect Engineering Using Thin-Films/Ald And Biological Applications, Udit Kumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Ceria nanostructures have been utilized for various engineering applications due to their unique defect structure, enabling them to have regenerative redox properties. The ability to shuttle between Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states extends to unique properties. Defect level in ceria is usually expressed in the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. It can be achieved by varying the size(0 to 3D), morphologies, dopants, hetero-nanostructures, and external stimuli. However, it is still a challenge to have precise control over defect structures in the ceria lattice. The current study aims to explore the thin film deposition techniques for cerium oxide using ALD (Atomic layer deposition) and …

Plants are the primary source of food for world’s population. Diseases in plants can cause yield loss, which can be mitigated by continual monitoring. Monitoring plant diseases manually is difficult and prone to errors. Using computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) for the early identification of plant illnesses can prevent the negative consequences of diseases at the very beginning and overcome the limitations of continuous manual monitoring. The research focuses on the development of an automatic system capable of performing the segmentation of leaf lesions and the detection of disease without requiring human intervention. To get lesion region segmentation, we …

Decolonizing The Brazilian Efl Classroom: Creating Space For Afro-Brazilian Students Of English, Robyn Diane Mosely

Master's Projects and Capstones

ABSTRACT

Afro-Brazilians constitute the majority of Brazil’s total population. When compared to White Brazilians, Afro-Brazilians are more than twice as likely to live in abject poverty. These striking disparities have significant implications for this community and the socioeconomic well-being of the entire country. Securing access to quality secondary education is imperative for the Black communities of Brazil to ascend out of poverty and hardship.

Completing a foreign language program, typically English, followed by successfully passing a rigorous competency exam, is a prerequisite to obtaining a postsecondary degree in Brazil's university system. This assessment can present a dilemma for Black Brazilians …

Teaching Chinese International Students Two-Word Verbs Through Three C’S Approach, Xiaoli Lu Dec 2022

Teaching Chinese International Students Two-Word Verbs Through Three C’S Approach, Xiaoli Lu

Master's Projects and Capstones

This field project probes into miscommunication problems between Chinese international students and native English speakers due to the formers’ lack of knowledge of two-word verbs. Research findings indicated that difficulty in the acquisition of two-word verbs lies in the polysemy and a large number of two-word verbs. The traditional classroom teaching method, which relies on memorizing the meanings of two-word verbs by rote, also brings challenges to Chinese students’ language learning. Furthermore, the frequent use of two-word verbs by native speakers of English in everyday scenarios leads to miscommunication issues with Chinese students who are unfamiliar with the meaning and …

Improving Nursing Shift Handoff Reports: A Quality Improvement Project, Nathan Mm Secrest

Master's Projects and Capstones

Nursing shift-to-shift handoff report can greatly impact a patient’s quality of care. According to the Joint Commission, “an estimated 80 percent of serious medical errors involve miscommunication between caregivers when patients are transferred or handed-off” (Inadequate handoff communication, 2017). In total, this quality improvement (QI) project worked with three hospital inpatient units on three different floors in an urban California (CA) city. Each unit and even shifts within each unit varied, leading to the conclusion that interventions should be trialed by units with the most buy-in, then adjusted to the unique needs of each unit. For our main intervention we …
