In a prospective cohort of healthcare personnel (HCP), we measured severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleocapsid IgG antibodies after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among 79 HCP, 68 (86%) were seropositive 14-28 days after their positive PCR test, and 54 (77%) of 70 were seropositive at the 70-180-day follow-up. Many seropositive HCP (95%) experienced an antibody decline by the second visit.

Analysis Of Variation In Pre-Procedural Fasting Duration For Common Inpatient Gastrointestinal Procedures, Vorada Sakulsaengprapha, Michael Daniel, Jiarui Cai, Diego A. Martinez, Simon C. Mathews

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal procedures generally require pre-procedural fasting to optimize sedation safety. While the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) recommends no intake of clear liquids and solid food 2-4 and 6-8 hours respectively prior to endoscopic procedures, the actual nil per os (NPO) duration for these procedures in practice is unknown. Our objective was to analyze NPO duration for patients undergoing these procedures and to determine its association with clinical and administrative variables.

METHODS: Inpatient data from 2016-2018 for the three procedures was extracted from electronic medical records and administrative data at a single-center tertiary academic medical center. Various statistical tests …

Investing In Late-Life Brain Capital, Walter D Dawson, Eric J Lenze, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Within many societies and cultures around the world, older adults are too often undervalued and underappreciated. This exacerbates many key challenges that older adults may face. It also undermines the many positive aspects of late life that are of tremendous value at both an individual and societal level. We propose a new approach to elevate health and well-being in late life by optimizing late-life Brain Capital. This form of capital prioritizes brain skills and brain health in a brain economy, which the challenges and opportunities of the 21st-century demands. This approach incorporates investing in late-life Brain Capital, developing initiatives focused …

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are one of the most common healthcare-associated infections in the US, accounting for over 1 million cases annually and totaling 450 million USD. CAUTIs have high morbidity and mortality rates and can be caused by a wide range of pathogens, making empiric treatment difficult. Furthermore, when urease-producing uropathogens cause symptomatic CAUTI or asymptomatic catheter colonization, the risk of catheter failure due to blockage increases. The enzyme urease promotes catheter blockage by hydrolyzing urea in urine into ammonia and carbon dioxide, which results in the formation of crystals that coat the catheter surface. If CAUTI is …

Glial Dysfunction And Its Contribution To The Pathogenesis Of The Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses, Keigo Takahashi, Hemanth R Nelvagal, Jenny Lange, Jonathan D Cooper

2020-Current year OA Pubs

While significant efforts have been made in developing pre-clinical treatments for the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs), many challenges still remain to bring children with NCLs a cure. Devising effective therapeutic strategies for the NCLs will require a better understanding of pathophysiology, but little is known about the mechanisms by which loss of lysosomal proteins causes such devastating neurodegeneration. Research into glial cells including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes have revealed many of their critical functions in brain homeostasis and potential contributions to neurodegenerative diseases. Genetically modified mouse models have served as a useful platform to define the disease progression in the …

Risk Based Day-Ahead Energy Resource Management With Renewables Via Computational Intelligence, Pratik Mochi, Kartik S. Pandya, Dharmesh Dabhi, Vipul N. Rajput

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

An indeterminate and variable nature of renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind power, load consumption, electric vehicles trips and market spot prices, make the operation and control of energy management system quite complex. Also, it is expected that the system should be consistent and resilient in case of extreme events like faults, hurricanes etc. This paper has used the risk based optimization strategies considering uncertainty of aforementioned parameters to minimize the operational cost of the aggregator. A 13-bus practical distribution system with 15-scenarios (03-scenarios as extreme events with high impact) are considered as a test system. WCCI-2018 award winning, …

Hybrid Approach Integrated With Gaussian Process Regression For Condition Monitoring Strategies At The Rotor Side Of A Doubly-Fed Induction Generator, Shuo Zhang, Emma Robinson, Malabika Basu Jan 2022

Hybrid Approach Integrated With Gaussian Process Regression For Condition Monitoring Strategies At The Rotor Side Of A Doubly-Fed Induction Generator, Shuo Zhang, Emma Robinson, Malabika Basu

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Regression-based Machine Learning (ML) approaches are mainly applied to fit the power curve for the performance evaluation of wind turbines (WTs). Although a fitted power curve is prevalent and straightforward for anomaly detection, it is difficult to identify the fault types at the rotor side of a WT, particularly, because the operation can be dependent on multiple parameters. The present paper suggests an interesting approach towards condition monitoring (CM) and fault diagnosis of a DFIG by only processing rotor currents through several signal processing techniques to recognize and localize miscellaneous electrical disturbances. A non-parametric regression approach, Gaussian process regression (GPR), …

Early Detection Of Mental Health Through Universal Screening At Schools, Jihye Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Randy Kamphaus Jan 2022

Early Detection Of Mental Health Through Universal Screening At Schools, Jihye Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Randy Kamphaus

Georgia Educational Researcher

Depression, anxiety, and stress are common mental health problems among adolescents. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have found that students who suffer from mental health problems (e.g., ADHD, anxiety, or depression) tend to manifest school and social problems. It is urgent to identify and intervene early to help children with mental health problems to improve their life outcomes. Unfortunately, research has shown that a significant proportion of children who suffer from behavioral or emotional problems remain unidentified because their symptoms are too mild to be noticed through casual observation by caregivers and teachers. As a result, their symptoms continue to develop …
