Faculty Publications

This chapter unpacks the principles behind Doughnut Economics and explains how libraries can lead a long overdue social transition by incorporating the principles into their policies and operations. The actualization of Doughnut Economics will bring about a positive transformation of people’s behavior, which in turn will shift the focus of the economy from unfettered growth and opportunistic monetization to the well-being of people and biodiversity on the planet. In addition, libraries can help facilitate a redistribution of wealth in its various forms by supporting and promoting knowledge sharing. The chapter concludes with a discussion of five simple acts that drive …

A Thinking Person's Guide To Immigration And Environmental Racism At The Us - Mexico Border, Emma H. Kiefer Jan 2022

A Thinking Person's Guide To Immigration And Environmental Racism At The Us - Mexico Border, Emma H. Kiefer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In recent years, more attention has been paid to the immigration crisis at the US-Mexico border thanks in part to the strict immigration restrictions from the Trump administration, such as the family separation policy. Immigration remains a widely misunderstood issue and arguments against increased immigration are often laced with racist stereotypes and perceptions that find their roots in centuries of US policy, court cases, and administrative rules. Similarly, the concept of environmental racism can be difficult for the American public to understand when modern-day racism alone has become more insidious. Intersectionality, a concept coined by sociologist Kimberlé Crenshaw, asks us …

Underwater: Science & Story In Aquatic Communities, Lena J. Beck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

How do we manage fish species, and how do fish, in turn, impact us? This portfolio of three stories will explore some of the ways in which humans interact with aquatic landscapes. First, we’ll go to Flathead Lake in Montana, where invasive lake trout have all but decimated native trout species, and learn what the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are doing to address the issue. Then, we’ll examine stories of a legendary Big Fish in Alaska’s Lake Iliamna, and think about what it means to scientifically prove something as real. The last story looks at the aquaculture industry in …

Using Multiple Environmental Tracers To Estimate Field-Scale Longitudinal Dispersivity, Casey L. Kleppel Jan 2022

Using Multiple Environmental Tracers To Estimate Field-Scale Longitudinal Dispersivity, Casey L. Kleppel

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this study, we seek to reduce parameter uncertainty in groundwater modeling systems, particularly in reactive transport models, by quantifying effective field-scale longitudinal dispersivity using anthropogenic environmental tracers. We generate synthetic aquifer fields and model transport of atmospheric tracers and test whether tracers can be used to determine an effective aquifer-scale dispersion coefficient. We generate synthetic datasets by simulating transport of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC11, CFC12, CFC113), sulfur-hexafluoride (SF6) and tritium (3H) with input functions derived from known atmospheric concentrations, through a three-dimensional, stochastic, heterogeneous synthetic aquifer developed using sequential Gaussian simulation using the PFLOTRAN reactive transport model. …

Tales From A Placeholder: A Relational Journey With Land, Place, People And Self, Kalle O. Fox Jan 2022

Tales From A Placeholder: A Relational Journey With Land, Place, People And Self, Kalle O. Fox

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The proposed thesis is a collection of place-based, long- and-short-form creative nonfiction essays. The places of interest are where the author spent different amounts of time in during her twenties, including Iceland, Miami and Seaside, Florida, Butte and Missoula, Montana, and a series of National Parks on the western side of the Continental Divide. This thesis is informed what cultural geographer Yi Fu Tuan coined as topophilia: the affective bond between people and place. “Place” and “sense of place,” while each having their own array of definitions in environmental scholarship, are considered interchangeable in the context of my work. A …

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Mass Timber And Concrete Residential Buildings: A Case Study In China, Cindy Chen, Francesca Pierobon, Susan Jones, Ian Maples, Yingchun Gong, Indroneil Ganguly Jan 2022

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Mass Timber And Concrete Residential Buildings: A Case Study In China, Cindy Chen, Francesca Pierobon, Susan Jones, Ian Maples, Yingchun Gong, Indroneil Ganguly

Publications, Reports and Presentations

As the population continues to grow in China’s urban settings, the building sector contributes to increasing levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Concrete and steel are the two most common construction materials used in China and account for 60% of the carbon emissions among all building components. Mass timber is recognized as an alternative building material to concrete and steel, characterized by better environmental performance and unique structural features. Nonetheless, research associated with mass timber buildings is still lacking in China. Quantifying the emission mitigation potentials of using mass timber in new buildings can help accelerate associated policy development and …

Boron Isotopes In Boninites Document Rapid Changes In Slab Inputs During Subduction Initiation, Hong-Yan Li, Xiang Li, Jeffrey G. Ryan, Chao Zhang, Yi-Gang Xu Jan 2022

Boron Isotopes In Boninites Document Rapid Changes In Slab Inputs During Subduction Initiation, Hong-Yan Li, Xiang Li, Jeffrey G. Ryan, Chao Zhang, Yi-Gang Xu

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

How subduction-related magmatism starts at convergent plate margins is still poorly understood. Here we show that boron isotope variations in early-formed boninites from the Izu-Bonin arc, combined with radiogenic isotopes and elemental ratios document rapid (~0.5 to 1 Myr) changes in the sources and makeup of slab inputs as subduction begins. Heterogeneous hornblende-granulite facies melts from ocean crust gabbros ± basalts fluxed early melting to generate low silica boninites. Hydrous fluids from slab sediments and basalts later fluxed the low silica boninites mantle source to produce high silica boninites. Our results suggest that initially the uppermost parts of the slab …

Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) greatly enhances the livability of cities by reducing urban heat buildup, mitigating stormwater runoff, and filtering airborne particulates, among other ecological services. These benefits, combined with the relative ease of measuring tree cover from aerial imagery, have led many cities to adopt management strategies based on UTC goals. In this study, we conducted canopy analyses for 300 cities in Florida to assess the impacts of development practices, urban forest ordinances, and hurricanes on tree cover. Within the cities sampled, UTC ranged from 5.9 to 68.7% with a median canopy coverage of 32.3% Our results indicate that …

Modeling Through, Ryan Calo Jan 2022

Modeling Through, Ryan Calo

Articles

Theorists of justice have long imagined a decision-maker capable of acting wisely in every circumstance. Policymakers seldom live up to this ideal. They face well-understood limits, including an inability to anticipate the societal impacts of state intervention along a range of dimensions and values. Policymakers cannot see around corners or address societal problems at their roots. When it comes to regulation and policy-setting, policymakers are often forced, in the memorable words of political economist Charles Lindblom, to “muddle through” as best they can.

Powerful new affordances, from supercomputing to artificial intelligence, have arisen in the decades since Lindblom’s 1959 article …

Classification Of Seismic Activity At The Lazufre Volcanic System, Based On 2011 To 2012 Data, Heather Mcfarlin, Glenn Thompson, Stephen R. Mcnutt, Jochen Braunmiller, Michael E. West

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Lazufre Volcanic System (LVS), on the border of northern Chile and Argentina, is an active complex of two volcanoes, Lastarria to the north and Cordón del Azufre to the south. The LVS is not regularly monitored with any scientific equipment despite being recognized as a top ten volcanic hazard in Argentina by the Observatorio Argentino de Vigilancia Volcánica of the Servicio Geológico y Minero Argentino. The system has shown unusual inflation signatures observed in InSAR but the level of seismic activity and its spatial and temporal distribution were unknown due to the lack of a permanent local seismic network. …

Complicated Mercy: Compensating The Wrongfully Convicted In Georgia, Elizabeth O'Roark Jan 2022

Complicated Mercy: Compensating The Wrongfully Convicted In Georgia, Elizabeth O'Roark

Georgia Law Review

An exoneree’s story does not end when they walk out of prison and back into society. After spending years in prison for a crime they did not commit, the exoneree must rebuild a life with years of lost income, little credit, and no retirement. Georgia is one of the few states that does not have a statute setting out how to fairly and efficiently compensate its exonerees. Exonerees must instead ask state representatives to present a resolution to the General Assembly. If the resolution passes through both chambers of the legislature, then the exoneree can receive some compensation for the …

Executive Discretion And First Amendment Constraints On The Deportation State, Jennifer Lee Koh Jan 2022

Executive Discretion And First Amendment Constraints On The Deportation State, Jennifer Lee Koh

Georgia Law Review

Given the federal courts’ reluctance to provide clarity on the degree to which the First Amendment safeguards the free speech and association rights of immigrants, the immigration policy agenda of the President now appears to determine whether noncitizens engaging in speech, activism, and advocacy are protected from retaliation by federal immigration authorities. This Essay examines two themes: first, the discretion exercised by the Executive Branch in the immigration context; and second, the courts’ ambivalence when it comes to enforcing immigrants’ rights to be free from retaliation. To do so, this Essay explores the Supreme Court’s influential 1999 decision in Reno …

Discrimination, Trump V. Hawaii, And Masterpiece Cakeshop, Christopher C. Lund Jan 2022

Discrimination, Trump V. Hawaii, And Masterpiece Cakeshop, Christopher C. Lund

Georgia Law Review

This short symposium piece is a comment on two of the Supreme Court’s recent religion cases. The first is Trump v. Hawaii, the travel ban case, where the Court rejected the claim of unconstitutional religious discrimination against Muslims.1 The second is Masterpiece Cakeshop, the case about the baker who refused to make a cake for a gay wedding, where the Court accepted the claim of unconstitutional religious discrimination against a conservative Christian.2 One case finds discrimination, while the other rejects it. Yet more fundamentally, the pairing suggests differences in how we perceive or react to evidence of discrimination. Both on …

Northwest Semitic Epigraphy And Historicity In The Book Of Jeremiah, Matthew Tyler Bronson Jan 2022

Northwest Semitic Epigraphy And Historicity In The Book Of Jeremiah, Matthew Tyler Bronson

Masters Theses

This thesis examines recent finds in Northwest Semitic epigraphy in an effort to determine their effectiveness for speaking to the historical validity of the prose sections of the Book of Jeremiah. In light of the book’s complex compositional issues, many models for understanding its development have been published over the last century; one foundational theory, expounded primarily by Robert P. Carroll, argues that material in Jeremiah apart from chapters 2–26 (Source A) fail to provide an accurate picture of the Historical Jeremiah. This claim is examined in light of Hebrew epigraphy. Chapter one introduces the issues involved in the study …

Elementary String Orchestra: A Hybrid Curriculum, Deborah Jeannette Hickey Jan 2022

Elementary String Orchestra: A Hybrid Curriculum, Deborah Jeannette Hickey

Masters Theses

Remote and distance musical instruction can be traced back to the earliest transmissions of radio and television. In the last few decades, it has made considerable strides due to the development of the internet and growing supportive software and online platforms. However, when the COVID-19 virus swept the world, many school districts were forced to convert to full- remote instruction instantaneously. While some unique and beneficial strategies developed out of this, many aspects and strategies proved to be less than ideal and inferior to in-person instruction, particularly where it pertained to performance and ensemble-based instrumental instruction. This project strives to …

Food Security Through Disaster Planning In Tanzania: How Agriculture-Based Disaster Preparedness Can Improve Food Security In Tanzania, Savannah A. Emerich Jan 2022

Food Security Through Disaster Planning In Tanzania: How Agriculture-Based Disaster Preparedness Can Improve Food Security In Tanzania, Savannah A. Emerich

Masters Theses

In Tanzania, half the population lives below the poverty line and suffers from food insecurity. Of the population, women and children primarily suffer from malnutrition due to food insecurity. For Tanzania, the problem is so severe that some women do not name their newborns for weeks or months due to their unlikely survival. This problem worsens for those who have a significant reliance on agriculture and live in the nation’s rural areas. These rural communities face more traumatic burdens when floods and droughts destroy crops, fields, and tools and ruin livelihoods. A solution has not been implemented thus far due …

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian Jan 2022

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper the semilinear equation of the spin-12 fields in the de Sitter space is investigated. We prove the existence of the global in time small data solution in the expanding de Sitter universe. Then, under the Lochak–Majorana condition, we prove the existence of the global in time solution with large data. The sufficient conditions for the solutions to blow up in finite time are given for large data in the expanding and contracting de Sitter spacetimes. The influence of the Hubble constant on the lifespan is estimated.

On Rotationally Driven Nonlinear Inclined Polymeric Jet With Gravity Effect, Daniel N. Riahi, Saulo Orizaga Jan 2022

On Rotationally Driven Nonlinear Inclined Polymeric Jet With Gravity Effect, Daniel N. Riahi, Saulo Orizaga

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We consider rotationally driven nonlinear polymeric fiber jet, whose centerline is in an inclined plane, in the presence of gravity force. An empirical viscosity model is used for the polymeric fluid flow to investigate properties of the rotating inclined polymeric fiber jet. The aim of the study is to understand properties of such inclined fiber jet shape, which can be due to orientation change of an orifice in a rotating spinneret that generates such jet. Perturbation, asymptotic, scaling and numerical techniques are used to determine the nonlinear steady solutions for the jet quantities for different values of the parameters due …

Scientific Breakdown Of A Ferromagnetic Nanofluid In Hemodynamics: Enhanced Therapeutic Approach, M. M. Bhatti, Sara Abdelsalam Jan 2022

Scientific Breakdown Of A Ferromagnetic Nanofluid In Hemodynamics: Enhanced Therapeutic Approach, M. M. Bhatti, Sara Abdelsalam

Basic Science Engineering

In this article, we examine the mechanism of cobalt and tantalum nanoparticles through a hybrid fluid model. The nanofluid is propagating through an anisotropically tapered artery with three different configurations; converging, diverging and non-tapered. To examine the rheology of the blood we have incorporated a Williamson fluid model which reveals both Newtonian and non-Newtonian effects. Mathematical and physical formulations are derived using the Lubrication approach for continuity, momentum and energy equations. The impact of magnetic field, porosity and viscous dissipation are also taken into the proposed formulation. A perturbation approach is used to determine the solutions of the formulated nonlinear …

On Behavioral Response Of Ciliated Cervical Canal On The Development Of Electroosmotic Forces In Spermatic Fluid, Sara I. Abdelsalam, A. Z. Zaher Jan 2022

On Behavioral Response Of Ciliated Cervical Canal On The Development Of Electroosmotic Forces In Spermatic Fluid, Sara I. Abdelsalam, A. Z. Zaher

Basic Science Engineering

The goal of this research is to conduct a theoretical investigation about the effect of the electroosmotic forces on the swimming of sperms throughout the cervical canal. To imitate male semen with self-propulsive spermatozoa, a hyperbolic tangent fluid is used as the base liquid. Swimming sperms move inside a ciliated cervical canal and peristalsis occurs due to the ciliated walls. The perturbation method is used to solve the controlling partial differential set of equations analytically. Due to selfpropulsion of swimmers and long wavelength assumption, a creeping flow protocol is used throughout the stream. The stream pattern, velocity distribution, and pressure …

Computational Framework Of Magnetized Mgo–Ni/Water-Based Stagnation Nanoflow Past An Elastic Stretching Surface: Application In Solar Energy Coatings, M, M. Bhatti, O. A. Bég, Sara Abdelsalam Jan 2022

Computational Framework Of Magnetized Mgo–Ni/Water-Based Stagnation Nanoflow Past An Elastic Stretching Surface: Application In Solar Energy Coatings, M, M. Bhatti, O. A. Bég, Sara Abdelsalam

Basic Science Engineering

In this article, motivated by novel nanofluid solar energy coating systems, a mathematical model of hybrid magnesium oxide (MgO) and nickel (Ni) nanofluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation point flow impinging on a porous elastic stretching surface in a porous medium is developed. The hybrid nanofluid is electrically conducted, and a magnetic Reynolds number is sufficiently large enough to invoke an induced magnetic field. A Darcy model is adopted for the isotropic, homogenous porous medium. The boundary conditions account for the impacts of the velocity slip and thermal slip. Heat generation (source)/absorption (sink) and also viscous dissipation effects are included. The mathematical …
