Physiological Indicators For Real-Time Detection Of Operator’S Attention, Bojana Bjegojevic, Maria Chiara Leva, Sam Cromie, Nora Balfe Jan 2022

Physiological Indicators For Real-Time Detection Of Operator’S Attention, Bojana Bjegojevic, Maria Chiara Leva, Sam Cromie, Nora Balfe

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Attention is a safety-critical operator ability that needs to be sustained over the course of specific tasks. However, many internal factors (e.g.: cognitive underload or overload, fatigue, etc.) and external factors (e.g.: HMI quality, environmental stressors, noise, etc.), can cause attention to drift away from the task. Having real-time indicators of operator’s attention could increase the safety of any human-operated system. Recent industrial deployment of drivermonitoring systems demonstrated the possible use of certain physiological and behavioural metrics as indicators of attention. However, it is unclear how sensitive and accurate these metrics are in detecting attention-related changes. This paper aims to …

Genetics Of Currant Clearwing Moth (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), Gábor Gyulai, Renée P. Malone, Gábor Zs Gyulai, Péter Lehoczky, Zoltán Tóth

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

A group of clearwing moths Sesiidae (Syn.: Aegeriidae) is analyzed here with special emphasis on genetics of currant clearwing moth (Synanthedon tipuliformis, CLERCK 1759). DNA sequences of the longest (1544 nt) available sequence of Sesiidae genes Co1 (cytochrome oxidase subunit-1 of mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA) (mtDNA; NCBI# AJ864359.1) were analyzed after In silico data mining, and dendrogram was edited to reveal molecular diversity and genetic distances among Sesiidae species. Batesian mimicry, sexual dimorphism, and genetics and genomics of Sesiidae are indicated.

Unlocking The Functional Potential Of Polyploid Yeasts, Simone Mozzachiodi, Kristoffer Krogerus, Brian Gibson, Alain Nicolas, Gianni Liti Jan 2022

Unlocking The Functional Potential Of Polyploid Yeasts, Simone Mozzachiodi, Kristoffer Krogerus, Brian Gibson, Alain Nicolas, Gianni Liti

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Breeding and domestication have generated widely exploited crops, animals and microbes. However, many Saccharomyces cerevisiae industrial strains have complex polyploid genomes and are sterile, preventing genetic improvement strategies based on breeding. Here, we present a strain improvement approach based on the budding yeasts’ property to promote genetic recombination when meiosis is interrupted and cells return-to-mitotic-growth (RTG). We demonstrate that two unrelated sterile industrial strains with complex triploid and tetraploid genomes are RTG-competent and develop a visual screening for easy and high-throughput identification of recombined RTG clones based on colony phenotypes. Sequencing of the evolved clones reveal unprecedented levels of RTG-induced …

Fatigue Risk Management: Current Practices And Challenges, Further Learning, Ishbel Macgregor-Curtin, Nora Balfe, Maria Chiara Leva Jan 2022

Fatigue Risk Management: Current Practices And Challenges, Further Learning, Ishbel Macgregor-Curtin, Nora Balfe, Maria Chiara Leva

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This paper outlines the causes, consequences and prevalence of fatigue and demonstrates the risk fatigue plays in accident causation in safety critical transport industries. Approaches to fatigue risk management are described and the limitations and challenges of these approaches are discussed in the context of the transport industry. The paper expands on previous research by further analysing data from a benchmarking study to determine the approaches taken in the rail industry. The paper concludes that railway organisations are applying some elements of a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) approach to fatigue management, but this is not being applied systematically which …

The Writing Identity Of A Hip Hop Lyricist And Educator: An Autoethnography, Lamont Muhammad Jan 2022

The Writing Identity Of A Hip Hop Lyricist And Educator: An Autoethnography, Lamont Muhammad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Traditional educational curricula and instruction rarely take into consideration the social and community backgrounds of historically marginalized students. It is not that students are “incapable,” however, most times they do not see themselves as “school writers” (Stormer, 2017). This autoethnographic study (Poulos, 2021) examines the topic of writers identity. My research speaks from the positionality of a Black male educator and author, Hip Hop lyricist, and curriculum writer. The dissertation study details how writing raps or lyrics contributed to the development of my writer’s identity. I explored the following research question: How did Hip Hop writing nurture my writer's identity …

Self-Perceived Loneliness And Depression During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Two-Wave Replication Study, Alessandro Carollo, Andrea Bizzego, Giulio Gabrieli, Keri Ka Yee Wong, Adrian Raine, Gianluca Esposito

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The global Covid-19 pandemic has forced countries to impose strict lockdown restrictions and mandatory stay-at-home orders with varying impacts on individual’s health. Combining a data-driven machine learning paradigm and a statistical approach, our previous paper documented a U-shaped pattern in levels of self-perceived loneliness in both the UK and Greek populations during the first lockdown (17 April to 17 July 2020). The current paper aimed to test the robustness of these results by focusing on data from the first and second lockdown waves in the UK. We tested a) the impact of the chosen model on the identification of the …

The term “hyperscanning” refers to the simultaneous recording of multiple individuals’ brain activity. As a methodology, hyperscanning allows the investigation of brain-to-brain synchrony. Despite being a promising technique, there is a limited number of publicly available functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning recordings. In this paper, we report a dataset of fNIRS recordings from the prefrontal cortical (PFC) activity of 33 mother-child dyads and 29 father-child dyads. Data was recorded while the parent-child dyads participated in an experiment with two sessions: a passive video attention task and a free play session. Dyadic metadata, parental psychological traits, behavioural annotations of the play …

Biobanks are repositories of human biological samples and data. They are an important component of clinical research in many disease areas and often represent the first step toward innovative treatments. For biobanks to operate, researchers need human participants to give their samples and associated health data. In Ireland, research participants must provide their freely given informed consent for their samples and data to be taken and used for research purposes. Biobank staff are responsible for communicating the relevant information to participants prior to obtaining their consent, and this communication process is supported by the Participant Information Leaflets and Informed Consent …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The current work deals with the fabrication of novel MoO3 nanostructured films with Ce and Cu co-doping through the spray pyrolysis route on a glass substrate maintained at 460◦C for the first time. The phase of developed films was approved by an X-ray diffraction study, and the crystallite size was determined between 82 and 92 nm. The optical transmission of the developed films was noticed to be reduced with doping and found between 45 and 90% for all films, and the absorption edge shifted to a higher wavelength with doping. The optical energy gap of the fabricated …

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Varying levels of sensitivity to florpyrauxifen-benzyl and benzobicyclon applications among rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars have been observed. The safe use of florpyrauxifen-benzyl and benzobicyclon in the same herbicide program could provide broad-spectrum weed control and delay resistance in weed species. Two experiments were conducted in 2019 and 2020 near Stuttgart, AR, to test cultivars' sensitivity to multiple rates of florpyrauxifen-benzyl and applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl followed by benzobicyclon. The first experiment was designed to determine the sensitivity of the rice cultivars `XP753', 'CL XL745', 'Gemini 214CL', 'Titan', and 'Diamond' to applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl at 0.03 and 0.06 lb acid …

Background: Since COVID-19 vaccines became broadly available to the adult population, sharp divergences in uptake have emerged along partisan lines. Researchers have indicated a polarized social media presence contributing to the spread of mis- or disinformation as being responsible for these growing partisan gaps in uptake.

Objective: The major aim of this study was to investigate the role of influential actors in the context of the community structures and discourse related to COVID-19 vaccine conversations on Twitter that emerged prior to the vaccine rollout to the general population and discuss implications for vaccine promotion and policy.

Methods: We collected tweets …

Big Data Visualization Through The Lens Of Peirce’S Visual Sign Theory, Alon Friedman, Martin Thellefsen Jan 2022

Big Data Visualization Through The Lens Of Peirce’S Visual Sign Theory, Alon Friedman, Martin Thellefsen

Data from social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, are generated by people who produce, spread, share, or exchange multimedia content. Such content may include text, images, sounds, or videos. To derive insight into the behavior of social media users, researchers often use open-source technologies to visualize data and generate models for data analytics. One of the most popular open-source applications for managing and analyzing social media data is the open-source R programming language. Friedman and Feichtinger (2017) created an R package termed ‘Peirce’s sign theory R package’ to analyze data using Peirce’s principles of discovery. Though Peirce semiotics …

The Entity Attorney-Client Privilege Meets The Twenty-First Century: Rethinking Functional Equivalent Analysis In The Time Of A Nonemployee Workforce., Grace M. Giesel Jan 2022

The Entity Attorney-Client Privilege Meets The Twenty-First Century: Rethinking Functional Equivalent Analysis In The Time Of A Nonemployee Workforce., Grace M. Giesel

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Courts have struggled with whether an entity’s attorney-client privilege can protect communications between the entity’s lawyer and a nonemployee who has information the entity’s lawyer needs to best advise the entity. The nonemployee might be a former employee. But increasingly in recent times, the nonemployee is an individual who was never an entity employee. Corporations and other entities have incorporated nonemployees in their economic enterprises in all sorts of roles—roles employees may have held in the past. Many courts have accepted that the privilege can apply to communications involving former employees.

When faced with nonemployees who are not former employees, …

On (Not) Seeing The Chicken: Perdue, Animal Welfare, And The Failure Of Transparency, Calvin Coker, Rachel A. Coker Jan 2022

On (Not) Seeing The Chicken: Perdue, Animal Welfare, And The Failure Of Transparency, Calvin Coker, Rachel A. Coker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this essay, we analyze Perdue’s animal welfare campaign from 2016 to 2020 to isolate how demands for transparency are mediated and subverted by Perdue’s public facing rhetoric. Though Perdue’s annual releases and commitments to change nominally constitute a victory for animal welfare advocates, the company’s campaign enacts transparency as a sort of publicity for the company that belies marginal gains for the lives of chickens and may ultimately result in increased meat consumption. In providing trackable metrics, offering paternalistic justifications for their treatments of chickens, and through strategic omissions of language and visuals, Perdue satisfies demands for transparency without …

In 1629, Thomas and John Buck, Cambridge University Press printers, published three texts—the Book of Common Prayer, the Bible and the Whole Book of Psalmes (known as the “Metrical Psalter”)—that were often bound together in one volume [UL], 1 one copy of which is now on permanent loan to the Archives & Special Collections of Ekstrom Library, University of Louisville. We do not know with any certainty when UL was bound, but because the KJV second edition was published in 1638, with many scholarly corrections based on the original languages, we can assume that the three texts were bound together …

Toward An Archaeology Of Manuscripts, Mark A. Mattes

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The title of Rachael Scarborough King’s edited collection of essays, After Print, refers at once to Peter Stallybrass’s insight that printing is a provocation of manuscript, as well as to what the study of manuscripts looks like when we move away from stadial and supersessionist print culture paradigms of authorship and publication and instead embrace archival methods and interpretive approaches that center on concepts of media interrelation in early modern manuscript cultures, such as Margaret Ezell’s concept of social authorship. The essays in King’s collection, including an epilogue by Ezell herself, bear the fruits of such intermedial and transmedial approaches, bringing …

Implementation Of A Software Defined Flisr Solution On An Active Distribution Grid, Darren Leniston, David Ryan, Clem Power, Paul Hayes, Steven Davy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Background: The resiliency of the distribution grid is of increasing concern to the distribution system operator (DSO) due to factors such as climate change and the resulting faults caused by inclement weather conditions, leading to service disruption to consumers. Loss of service negatively affects key performance indicators (KPI) of the DSO, such as customer minutes lost (CML) and customer interruptions (CI), leading to financial penalties imposed by the regulator. Methods: In this paper we propose a software-driven Fault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR) solution, leveraging modern software and communication technologies married with the DSO's existing infrastructure, to aid fault …
