Examining Ayahuasca Constituents At 5-Ht2a Receptors In Search Of Antidepressant Action, Jeremy D. Rolquin
Examining Ayahuasca Constituents At 5-Ht2a Receptors In Search Of Antidepressant Action, Jeremy D. Rolquin
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, it has been reported that ligands of the 5-HT2A receptor can have drastic and fast-acting efficacy towards a number of different mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. A mixture of Amazonian plants calledayahuasca contains multiple compounds which have been shown to interact with the serotonergic system, and the 5-HT2Areceptor in particular.
The structurally similar compounds (DMT, harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine) found in ayahuasca were examined for differences in their physiochemical properties that might contribute to their binding affinity for the 5-HT2Areceptor. 3D Molecular modeling and docking studies of these compounds were …
Development And Validation Of A Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor Perception Feedback Scale, Robert Craig
Development And Validation Of A Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor Perception Feedback Scale, Robert Craig
Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory study developed and validated a Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor Perception Feedback Scale (VALTPFS). The VALTPFS is a self-report questionnaire that measures the perceptions of one-on-one adult literacy tutors about their values, knowledge sharing, and satisfaction. This instrument is designed to assess the perceptions of adults who volunteer to provide literacy instruction to tutees who are U.S. born native English language speaking adults. The theoretical framework used to inform the development of the VALTPFS is the community of practice (CoP). The CoP framework was used to identify subscales from instruments with established psychometric credentials to operationalize the VALTPFS. As …

SPLANCHNIC OXYGENATION AND FEEDING INTOLERANCE IN THE VERY LOW BIRTHWEIGHT INFANT
By Melissa C. Dollings, Ph.D.
A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University
Virginia Commonwealth University, 2022
Major Director: Lisa F. Brown, Ph.D., RN, School of Nursing
Background. Feeding intolerance is common in preterm infants but can be an ominous precursor of necrotizing enterocolitis, a life-threatening gastrointestinal disease. The definition and management of feeding intolerance vary widely. This research examined the relationship
between feeding intolerance, intrauterine factors, extrauterine factors, and intestinal immaturity and circulatory immaturity in the …
Therapeutic Approaches For Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Franck J. Kamga Gninzeko
Therapeutic Approaches For Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Franck J. Kamga Gninzeko
Theses and Dissertations
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is characterized by shortness of breath and low oxygen levels. RDS affects the neonatal and adult populations. In the neonatal population, RDS can be classified as NRDS (Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome), while in adults, it is known as ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome). This dissertation examines a therapeutic approach to NRDS and a mechanistic approach to ARDS with in vivo and in vitro models of lung injury. NRDS is characterized by a deficiency or lack of surfactant. Surfactant is an essential compound composed of phospholipids and proteins to prevent the lungs from collapsing. There are several …
Rational Design Of Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs)-Based Functional Materials Towards Better Air Quality, Zan Zhu
Theses and Dissertations
Air pollution is a major threat to environmental safety and public health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), and airborne microorganisms are three typical air pollutants. Conventional strategies to prevent and mitigate air pollution have been employed, which, however, are generally passive. For instance, VOC sensing through solid-state devices is a conventional approach, which, however, is not capable of capturing and removing VOCs. On the other hand, air filters and face masks are useful equipment to protect people from inhaling PM and airborne microorganisms. But most commercial filters can only capture them on the surfaces, which may cause secondary …
The Role Of Irf-1 In Spontaneous Mouse Glioma, Aakash B. Vaidya
The Role Of Irf-1 In Spontaneous Mouse Glioma, Aakash B. Vaidya
Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma Multiforme has been shown to be one of the deadliest primary brain cancers. One of the reasons why GBM is so deadly, is a unique immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment that promotes GBM growth and progression. Both astrocyte and microglia have been implicated in immunosuppression. In this study, we explored the role of Interferon Regulatory Factor 1 (IRF-1) in astrocytes and glioma cells on the growth of spontaneous glioma tumors. IRF-1 is regulated by the JAK/STAT pathway and induces expression of Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1). PD-L1 downregulates immune responses to glioma. We found that IRF-1 had no effect on spontaneous …
The Examination Of Health Care System Distrust As A Barrier To Utilization And Engagement Of Preventive Services In The Health Care System In Black Emerging Adults, With A Special Focus On Insurance Status And Usual Source Of Care., Alexandra Wynn
Theses and Dissertations
Health care system distrust is a well-known barrier to health utilization and engagement in older African Americans. However, it has not been explored in Black emerging adults, individuals 18- 26. It is important to explore the social and psychological effects of systemic barriers, such as health care system distrust, in this developmental period as emerging adults undergo unique demographic shifts, changes in sense of self, and identity exploration. Due to emerging adulthood being an exploratory and challenging transitionary phase, emerging adults have an increased susceptibility to preventable morbidity and mortality issues and decreased access to important preventive services. Thus, health …
A Simple Approach To Better Distinguish Real Earnings Manipulation From Strategy Changes, Theodore E. Christensen, Adrienna Huffman, Melissa F. Lewis-Western, Kristen Valentine
A Simple Approach To Better Distinguish Real Earnings Manipulation From Strategy Changes, Theodore E. Christensen, Adrienna Huffman, Melissa F. Lewis-Western, Kristen Valentine

Researchers typically infer real earnings management when a firm’s operating and investing activities differ from industry norms. A significant problem with classifying deviations from industry averages as myopic earnings management is that companies can change their operating and investing decisions for strategic business reasons rather than to mislead stakeholders. Using principal components analysis, we systematically evaluate existing measures and develop a comprehensive real activities measure to better capture earnings manipulation. Our measure reflects (i) deviations from industry averages across multiple activities and (ii) other signals of manipulation. This approach is promising because, although there are many sources of abnormal activities, …

In this literature review, we show that little attention has been given to pre-class learning in a flipped classroom setting. To support learning, a flipped classroom shifts the learning of basic content from a classroom setting to a pre-class setting, thereby freeing up time within class for more active learning activities. Active learning activities support student-centered learning as peers collaborate with deep application of pre-class learning concepts. Thus, higher-order skills of critical thinking and lifelong learning, which are valued in the accounting education curriculum and profession, can be developed through a flipped classroom pedagogy. However, if pre-class learning is not …

We examine the importance of audit partners' prior non-public accounting experience (hereafter, “industry experience”) to audit outcomes. We conducted 20 (nine) semi-structured interviews of audit partners with (without) industry experience. These interviews shed light on industry-experienced partners’ career path choices, perceptions of the challenges and benefits stemming from industry experience, and perceptions of how this experience influences their current audit work. Grounded in theory and the results of these interviews, we empirically examine using a unique hand-collected dataset whether audit partners with industry experience conduct higher quality and more efficient audits. Our evidence implies that industry experience is associated with …

To what extent do consumers boycott in response to corporate tax activities? Anecdotes suggest potential consumer backlash is a meaningful deterrent to corporate tax planning, and the tax literature has developed expectations that these boycotts happen. But empirical evidence on their existence and impact is limited. We undertake a comprehensive study to examine how consumers’ purchase behavior relates to corporate tax activities, triangulating across several designs, samples, and measures. First, we survey a representative sample of U.S. consumers to examine the reported relationship between corporate tax planning and consumer behavior; we find that consumers report that precisely zero have ever …

Women are underrepresented in the information systems discipline as well as other STEM fields. A common explanation for the significant gender gap is the difference in women’s and men’s self-efficacy concerning information systems (IS) tasks and roles during their secondary education. As a potential solution, this study explores how chatbot tutors impact confidence differently between 136 women and men in an introductory programming course. Our findings confirmed prior research showing that while men have greater confidence in information systems tasks, there is no difference in performance in those tasks between women and men. Next, we found that a chatbot used …

With growing climate change concerns, and constant advancements in smart technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and algorithms (STARA), organisations in emerging economies are becoming more compelled to go green, develop and deploy their STARA capability to boost profits more effectively, and their environmental sustainability (ES). Likewise, with governments increasingly calling for ES, organisations' human resource management (HRM) is further pressured to ensure their programmes aid realisation of environmental objectives without compromising profit maximisation. However, it remains unclear how complementary Green HRM (GHRM) programmes can be supported by organisational STARA capability (OSC) to bolster ES. Accordingly, we investigate how OSC and GHRM …

Though socially anxious individuals tend to seek safety, little is known about whether this relationship depends on context, including the affordances of social networking sites (SNSs) to provide anonymity and publicness, and whether safety-seeking can be explained by impression management, privacy calculus or both. Based on the psychobiological model of social anxiety, we conducted two studies (Study 1: N = 103, Study 2: N = 1,184) to examine the contextual dependence of safety-seeking behaviors and to disentangle which types of concerns mediate the effect of social anxiety on safety-seeking behaviors. Results indicated that socially anxious individuals tend to seek safety …

Environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) has recently gained traction among academics, practitioners, and policymakers as a critical driver of sustainable development. However, the impact of ECSR on actual pro-environmental behavior remains unclear in the literature, particularly in the context of developing countries. Grounded in the social exchange and social network theories, this study examines the effect of ECSR on proenvironmental behavior via the mediation of a green shared vision and the moderation of two types of personal ties (business ties and political ties). Data was collected and analyzed from 375 manufacturing sector employees in Pakistan at two time periods. The …

Federalism scholars have long been fascinated by the unique relationship between the federal government and states that have legalized marijuana. And with good reason. For the past fifty years, Congress has classified marijuana as a Schedule I drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act (“CSA”), deeming the drug to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. Congress’s aim in establishing Schedule I of the CSA was to “eliminate the market in Schedule I substances.” Thus, possessing, distributing, and manufacturing marijuana are federally illegal. Congress’s objective notwithstanding, over two-thirds of the states (and territories) have legalized marijuana …

Out Of Sight And Out Of Mind: Criminal Laws Disguised Moral Culpability Requirement, Andrew Ingram
University of Richmond Law Review
Last spring, the Supreme Court of the United States made a little-remarked constitutional ruling in Kahler v. Kansas. Upon casual inspection, Kahler looks like a doctrinal dead-end. The petitioner asked the Supreme Court to recognize a due process right for mentally ill defendants to raise the M’Naghten right-and-wrong test of insanity, and the Court said, “No.” The petitioner’s failure notwithstanding, Kahler is not a barren vine. On the contrary, it is heavy-laden with new doctrinal insights for criminal law scholars.
The case deserves a thorough look—not for what it can teach us about constitutional contentions that the Court has …
Unservice: Reconceptualizing The Utility Duty To Serve In Light Of Climate Change, Heather Payne
Unservice: Reconceptualizing The Utility Duty To Serve In Light Of Climate Change, Heather Payne
University of Richmond Law Review
Many facets of utility monopoly regulation are approaching a minimum of eight decades as part of our legal landscape. A bedrock principle of state utility regulation is the duty to serve, which demands that utilities provide nondiscriminatory service to all those within their geographic territory for the specific service for which they have been granted a monopoly. Within its exclusive territory, a utility is required “to serve all present and reasonably to be anticipated future users.” Each state has adopted some form of this for its regulated monopolies, although formulations differ. This Article argues that in light of climate change …
The Pain Of Paying Taxes, Gary M. Lucas Jr.
The Pain Of Paying Taxes, Gary M. Lucas Jr.
University of Richmond Law Review
With a few caveats, standard economic models assume that, from society’s perspective, the payment of a tax constitutes a costless transfer from the taxpayer to the government. The financial loss to the taxpayer is exactly offset by the financial gain to the government, which can use the resulting tax revenue for the benefit of its citizens. In other words, paying taxes forces taxpayers to forgo private consumption, but the resulting loss in utility can be counterbalanced by an increase in utility from government spending. In fact, if the government spends wisely on beneficial public goods that are undersupplied by private …

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The so-called ‘memorial turn’ triggered a huge shift in historical studies of the late 20th century. It brought into focus stories of the ‘small people’ previously left out from the ‘grand narrative.’ For post-Soviet countries, the memorial turn can be perceived as an indicator of changes in society associated with the opportunity and interest of previously oppressed social groups and religious movements in finding their "roots," when the reconstruction of personal history becomes the history of the church and strengthens collective identity. In this essay, we attempted at reconstructing the traumatic history of the "little" people in the context of …

Acrylonitrile, an industrial chemical, is a multisite carcinogen in rats and mice, producing tumors in four tissues with barrier function, that is, brain, forestomach, Zymbal’s gland, and Harderian gland. To assess mechanism(s) of action (MoA) for induction of neoplasia and to evaluate whether the findings in rodents are indicative of human hazard, data on the potential key effects produced by acrylonitrile in the four rodent target tissues of carcinogenicity were evaluated. A notable finding was depletion of glutathione in various organs, including two target tissues, the brain, and forestomach, suggesting that this effect could be a critical initiating event. An …

Stormwater is expelled from the urban environment and treated as a greater product of waste. Excess watershed is rushed from the vast grey landscape we’ve built of impervious surfaces and below the surface through hundreds of miles of outdated storm sewer waterways into the nearest natural water source, carrying with it pollutants and hazardous materials that contaminate the very source that our communities rely on. An increase of rainfall introduced from the surfaces of our metropolitan municipalities to these natural waterways become too much to contain and damaging events of flooding occur to surrounding areas. Consequently, during times of little …

Manufactured Quality Of Life: Planning For Equity, Environment And Community In A Rural Mobile Home Park, Abigayle Brown
Landscape Architecture Theses
Over 20 million Americans reside in a mobile home park. The homes are hardly mobile and calling them a park is an exaggerated compliment. The automobile industry birthed the trailer that is now used as a permanent home. After the industrial revolution and World War II, reaching suburbia quickly became an American dream. Manufacturers took advantage of this movement by rapidly producing homes that have resulted in the permanent communities of today. Banks view mobile homes as personal property, which depreciates at the same rate as an automobile. Since a mobile home is not valued as real property, it makes …

Litigation Bias, Adam N. Eckart
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
There is pervasive litigation bias in law schools. Despite significant interest in transactional law fields among law students, law schools disproportionately teach to the student interested in litigation: litigation-based legal writing assignments outnumber transactional-based ones 19 to 1; litigation-based clinics outnumber transactional ones 9 to 1; and doctrinal classes focus primarily on appellate court cases, often failing to entertain substantive discussion on the creation or content of the documents that led to the dispute. As a result, law school graduates are 44% less prepared for transactional careers than litigation careers.

What seems to be the problem? The problem is nationwide- Minnesota is just late to the party. Our privilege of 10,000(+) lakes has led us to turn somewhat of a blind eye to stormwater management. This is especially true on a residential scale. Yes, certain jurisdictions & municipalities are rolling out increased restrictions and standards. However, the qualifications are still limited in quantity and often they focus solely on hard cover restrictions. Through my professional work and my research on this topic I have uncovered an unpleasant trend: Residential stormwater management landscape design is boring. Whether that is due to …
On The Tides: A Resort Raising Awareness Of Coral Reefs Through Environmental Intimacy And Accessible Exploration Off Hollywood, Florida's Coast, Trey Kramer
Landscape Architecture Theses
Reef ecosystems around the world are facing threats from all sides. They see destruction and physical damage from careless people participating in destructive practices such as improper fishing, dredging, or even people removing coral itself. It isn’t just from water however, urban development along coasts has changed the ecosystem in the water. Nutrients from agriculture finds its way into runoff. Urban stormwater as well as inadequately treated sewage makes its way into the oceans via our coastal cities. Overfishing can alters the delicate food chain the most reefs rely on for survival. This already fragile ecosystem is under a barrage …
