Processes Underlying Black American College Students’ Mental Health: Examining The Roles Of Mental Health Literacy, Ethnic-Racial Identity, And Mental Health-Related Behaviors, Chloe Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Addressing the mental health of college students is a persistent and increasing priority (Auerbach et al., 2018), especially among Black American individuals. Given prevalent mental health disparities, it is critical to understand the association between Black American emerging adults’ mental health literacy (MHL) and mental health outcomes including promotive mental health-related behaviors (MHRBs) and symptoms (i.e., anxiety and depressive symptoms), and the modifiable underlying factors that inform them. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) and the Identity-based Motivation theory (Oyserman & Yoder, 2007), the present study aimed to examine the relation between mental health literacy and mental …
Progress Towards Next Generation Modulators Of Ctbp's Oncogenic Effects, Jacqueline L. West
Progress Towards Next Generation Modulators Of Ctbp's Oncogenic Effects, Jacqueline L. West
Theses and Dissertations
Human C-terminal binding proteins (CtBP1 and CtBP2) are transcriptional coregulators of multiple genes in the human genome, including tumor suppressor genes (e.g., Bik, PTEN, BRCA1, and E-cadherin) as well as oncogenes (e.g. MDR1 and Tiam1). Both homologues of CtBP are overexpressed in many types of cancer, including breast cancer (92%), ovarian cancer (83%), colorectal cancer (64%), hepatocellular carcinoma (60%), gastric cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Further, expression levels of CtBP correlate with worse prognostic outcomes and more aggressive tumor features because it promotes proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and cancer stem cell self-renewal activity.

The L1-Norm Regularized L1-Norm Best-Fit Line Problem And Applications, Xiao Ling
The L1-Norm Regularized L1-Norm Best-Fit Line Problem And Applications, Xiao Ling
Theses and Dissertations
The best-fit subspace or low-rank approximation of a data matrix revolves
around the norm approximation technique. l2-norm criterion is probably the most
widely used norm for fitting subspaces. As the computational power increases, the
l1-norm analogue has recently gained attention from the academic community. It is
widely agreed that the l1 norm is insensitive to outliers, compared to its l2 variant.
Because of the polyhedral structure interrelated with linear programming (LP),
the l0 norm is commonly relaxed into the l1-norm problem to induce sparsity in
models. In this work, we examine …
Puddlefist, Dylan Ahern
Puddlefist, Dylan Ahern
Theses and Dissertations
This written thesis focuses on my MFA thesis exhibition, Puddlefist. It begins with an introduction to both the artworks and my artistic approach, then discusses the text Transcendental Black Metal by Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, which serves as a larger reference point for the work. The latter part of this written thesis is a narrative influenced by the convergence of the sculptures that comprise the exhibition. I consider it a form of endurance writing that exercises motifs of noise, mantra, and monotony. In the section entitled Puc and Yellow, NPC (non-playable character) dialogue from the video game Fallout: New Vegas is transcribed …
Viral Overexpression Of Rprd2 In Mouse Nucleus Accumbens Induces Anxiety-Like Behavior And Regulates Genes Associated With Microtubule Transport, Claire Nuhad Atiyeh
Viral Overexpression Of Rprd2 In Mouse Nucleus Accumbens Induces Anxiety-Like Behavior And Regulates Genes Associated With Microtubule Transport, Claire Nuhad Atiyeh
Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illness in the United States with many individuals underdiagnosed and undertreated (Anxiety & Depression Association of America, 2021; Bandelow et al., 2017). While stress is a known risk factor for developing anxiety disorders, there is emerging evidence that biological variability in the expression of key proteins in the brain may contribute to regulating an organism’s stress-related behaviors. Earlier work from our laboratory identified a protein, called Regulation of Nuclear Pre-mRNA Domain Containing 2 (RPRD2), that was differentially expressed in the brain of mice stratified in terms of their phenotypic response to chronic stress …
Varied Levels Of Fructose Consumption Induce Physiological, Cognitive, And Mitochondrial Alterations In Aged Female Rats, Emilie L. Bjerring
Varied Levels Of Fructose Consumption Induce Physiological, Cognitive, And Mitochondrial Alterations In Aged Female Rats, Emilie L. Bjerring
Theses and Dissertations
Since the 1970s, fructose consumption has dramatically increased within the United States, as well as the world. While adolescents tend to be the largest consumer of fructose, mostly seen in the form of sugary beverages, the consequences of a high fructose diet started in adulthood can also have severe implications on physiological parameters as well as cognition. Several studies have linked fructose consumption to metabolic syndrome, a clustering of symptoms related to overall health, with particular emphasis placed on obesity, type II diabetes, and the relationship with Alzheimer’s Disease. These findings largely stem from the outcomes of studies on cognition, …

Automated Conjecturing On The Independence Number And Minimum Degree Of Diameter-2-Critical Graphs, Joshua R. Forkin
Automated Conjecturing On The Independence Number And Minimum Degree Of Diameter-2-Critical Graphs, Joshua R. Forkin
Theses and Dissertations
A diameter-2-critical (D2C) graph is a graph with diameter two such that removing any edge increases the diameter or disconnects the graph. In this paper, we look at other lesser-studied properties of D2C graphs, focusing mainly on their independence number and minimum degree. We show that there exist D2C graphs with minimum degree strictly larger than their independence number, and that this gap can be arbitrarily large. We also exhibit D2C graphs with maximum number of common neighbors strictly greater than their independence number, and that this gap can be arbitrarily large. Furthermore, we exhibit a D2C graph whose number …

Challenges Among Latine Daca Recipients And Anxiety: A Systematic Meta-Analytic Review, Isis A. Garcia-Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
Immigrant-origin Latine young adults (ILYAs) face a challenge that is specific to their developmental period. As ILYAs transition from high school to beyond (e.g., workforce, college, etc.), they begin to grapple with participating in normative experiences for all young adults in the U.S. (e.g., obtaining a driver’s license, getting their first job at 16). The lives of ILYA, particularly those who are DACAmented or DACA eligible, are characterized by the legal and social contradiction that arises from growing up in the U.S. yet facing barriers to full participation in U.S. society. The nonexistent synthesis of the exponentially growing literature in …

Madeleine Béjart: La Femme Galante, Katherine E. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
The 17th Century marked the beginning of women professionally joining the acting profession and as such brought about change in the career opportunities for women. Madeleine Béjart was one of these actresses who is notorious for her liaison and working relationship with famed playwright, Molière. Through this personal relationship her role in history was relegated to that of mistress and the scandal concerning Molière’s wife Armande who is speculated to either be Madeleine's daughter or sister. By using historical and biographical information on Madeleine along with two works of Molière in which she originated roles, I will explore the intricacies …

Taking Flight: An Independent Living Facility For Emancipated Foster Youth, Kristy Mcdaniel Leitzel
Theses and Dissertations
Motivation
Many of us think about foster care in the context of younger children removed from home. However, little thought is given to youth that age out of the foster care system and the associated challenges and risks they face, namely in the area of housing.
Youth in foster care often receive minimal support in making the transition to independence and are frequently forced into instant adulthood. They are faced with an abrupt end of support at a time when they have not yet mastered the educational, social, or economic survival skills necessary to be independent in the community (Haas, …

Periodic Trends In The Infrared And Optical Absorption Spectra Of Metal Chalcogenide Clusters, Alain Ward
Theses and Dissertations
We have investigated the Optical absorption, Infrared spectra, Binding Energies, and various other cluster properties to determine the existence of periodic trend for Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters ligated with CO ligands. We were motivated to answer the question of whether periodic behavior can be observed in properties of octahedral metal-chalcogenide clusters. We have used the Amsterdam Density Functional code to calculate the electronic structure of Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters using gradient-corrected density functional theory. We determined the existence of several periodic trends in properties of octahedral Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters TM6Se8(CO)6. To investigate these …
Connections Exposed | A Library For The People, Stephanie Wilburn
Connections Exposed | A Library For The People, Stephanie Wilburn
Theses and Dissertations
MOTIVATION
The U.S. economy, democracy, and the health and happiness of citizens depends on maintaining social capital, the networks of bonds between community members. Social capital creates the trust that facilitates action and cooperation for mutual benefit. Since the 1960s, there has been a decline in-person socialization and social bonds both within and between demographic groups in the US resulting in reduced social capital (Putnam, 2000).
One measure to combat declining social capital is to create third places where incidental and repeated social interactions build and reinforce bonds between community members (Oldenburg, 1997).
With the reduction of accessible and inclusive …

Towards New Antimalarial Drug: Depolarization Of Liposomal Membranes By Aminooxoethylcarbamothioate In The Presence Of Fe3+ Ions, Aaron Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the efforts of scientists around the world 409,000 people died of malaria in 2019 alone. According to the WHO 90% of those deaths occurred in Africa. Despite the high number of available treatments, malaria continues to plague many parts of the world. This is due in part to drug resistance developed among mosquito populations as well as limited access to medicines that do work. Furthermore, when traveling to malaria prone areas, pretreatment with a chemoprophylaxis is common practice. However, often the side effects to malaria pretreatment are severe. A new approach to the treatment of malaria is a compound …

Considering Queerness - Actor Training's Issues And Alternatives, Jacob Leblanc
Theses and Dissertations
Educators in academic theatre programs, whether queer or non-queer, trans or cisgender, may not intentionally consider queerness in their pedagogical practices. What follows is an examination of current issues in academia that can affect queer students negatively and disproportionately. Anecdotal evidence is provided to demonstrate different issues that may be present in the classroom experiences of queer students. The Stanislavski system is critiqued through a contemporary, queer lens to locate possible shortcomings in the acting technique when it is applied by queer performers. Queer alternatives to the Stanislavski system are vetted and offered to queer students who might seek something …
The Economic Value Of Pharmacist-Physician Collaborative Care Models In Hypertension Management, Jessica S. Jay
The Economic Value Of Pharmacist-Physician Collaborative Care Models In Hypertension Management, Jessica S. Jay
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Hypertension is highly prevalent in the United States, affecting nearly half of all adults (43%). Studies have shown that pharmacy-physician collaborative care models (PPCCM) for hypertension management significantly improve blood pressure (BP) control rates and provide consistent control of BP. Time in target range (TTR) for systolic BP is a novel measure of BP control consistency that is independently associated with decreased cardiovascular (CV) risk. There is no evidence observed improvement in TTR for systolic BP with PPCCM is cost effective.
Objective: This study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of PPCCM with usual care for the management of hypertension …

Characterizing Senescence Induction And Senolytic Sensitivity In Murine Lung Cancer Cell Lines, Rana A. Estaleen
Characterizing Senescence Induction And Senolytic Sensitivity In Murine Lung Cancer Cell Lines, Rana A. Estaleen
Theses and Dissertations
While cancer patients often experience tumor reduction after receiving chemotherapy, tumors can eventually emerge from a state of dormancy. Cancer cells treated with the topoisomerase II poison, etoposide (ETO), enter senescence, which is a durable and prolonged cell cycle growth arrest. Different murine lung cell lines were screened for their levels of senescence induction by ETO, and those showed promising senescence induction were then treated with the senolytic, ABT263, to promote apoptosis. The hypothesis of this work was that non-small cell lung cancer cell lines will have different degrees of senescence and that the magnitude of the response to senolytics …
