Investigation Of A Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase From An Uncultured Archaeon, Luke Moore
Investigation Of A Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase From An Uncultured Archaeon, Luke Moore
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Nickel based Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase (CODH) is an anaerobic metalloenzyme responsible for the reversible conversion of CO and water into CO2 and 2 protons and 2 electrons. This enzyme has importance in the environment as one of Earth’s first carbon fixation pathways, and for human uses as a potential source of biofuels and other commodity chemicals. CODH enzymes are present in a wide array of taxa, many of which are uncultured. In this study we express and purify the catalytic subunit (CooS) of the anaerobic CODH from an uncultured Hydrothermarchaeota JdFR-17 co-expressed with the nickel insertion accessory protein (CooC) …
Trophic Ecology And Mercury Bioaccumulation Among Lake Superior Lake Trout Ecotypes, Dalton C. Norris
Trophic Ecology And Mercury Bioaccumulation Among Lake Superior Lake Trout Ecotypes, Dalton C. Norris
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Lake Superior lake trout population consists of siscowet, lean, humper and redfin ecological morphotypes or ‘ecotypes’. In addition to morphological differences, these ecotypes occupy different habitats in Lake Superior and partition various invertebrate and fish prey resources. In this study, I measured the stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) and mercury concentrations among these ecotypes collected from Lake Superior waters surrounding Isle Royale. Average mercury concentrations were highest for redfins (1389 ng/g dry wt) followed by siscowets (823 ng/g), humpers (799 ng/g) and leans (519 ng/g) and differed significantly among the ecotypes ( …
A Coupled Viscoplastic-Damage Constitutive Model For Semicrystalline Polymers, Jeffrey Wiersma
A Coupled Viscoplastic-Damage Constitutive Model For Semicrystalline Polymers, Jeffrey Wiersma
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The ease of processing, recyclability, and ideal cost to weight ratio makes the semi-crystalline polymers attractive in the aerospace, automotive, and defense industries. Use of semicrystalline polymers for engineering design requires a thorough understanding of their response to mechanical deformation, rate of loading, temperature, and failure mechanisms. However, there lacks a generally agreed upon constitutive model to capture the large deformation elastic-viscoplastic response of semicrystalline polymers while incorporating the strain-rate dependence and damage behavior. To address this aspect, the objective of this dissertation is to develop an elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to predict the rate dependent, large deformation response of semicrystalline …

Romantic relationships are consequential to being an adolescent. Hence, it is inevitable that relationship dissolution is experienced during this life stage. One of the relationship dissolution strategies used in present times is ghosting. The present study aims to explore the perception of senior high school students on the effects of ghosting experiences on romantic relationships. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 17 participants selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed that after the ghosting experience, the participants' previous views on romantic relationships were either solidified or changed in terms of having labels, founded on friendships, and …

Do It For The "Gram": A Social Phenomenological Study On Selected Female Instagram Beauty Influencers In Metro Manila, Berlyn Kyle L. Argonia, Jannamae Joyce D. Chua, Ariana V. Fulliga, Wilfred Luis L. Clamor
Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
Instagram beauty influencers are often considered "trendsetters" when conforming to beauty ideals. To live up to the label given to them, they perform beauty practices, improve their appearance, and are cautious of the contents they put out. Despite their life mostly revolving online, it is difficult to decipher an influencers' whole life since their followers only get to see a portion of it, which means that the public eye can easily label them as "perfect." This research applies the social phenomenology by Schutz and Luckmann (1673), as the theoretical-methodological approach, along with a qualitative-descriptive research design. A one-on-one virtual interview …

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
Islam is widely recognized for its prominence on the manifestation of modesty throughout existing religious customs, primarily grounded on holy scriptures urging Muslimahs, especially, to maintain self-effacement in public. However, the universal benchmark for Islamic modesty has been interpreted and reshaped by Muslim women worldwide, depending on cognitive and external constituents observed and practiced across different localities, upbringings, and ethnic groups. The study utilized a qualitative approach in ascertaining these determinants and examining their comprehensive bearing toward a Muslimah's meaning-making of modesty. The research focused …

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
The difficulty to continue education in the Philippines, especially in the case of children, more often than not results from lack of motivation amid poverty. This problem brought the reason for this study — to create a way to spark motivation to continue education through a bibliotherapy storybook. Data were collected among twelve respondents, ages 6-12, through questionnaires describing their goals, wants, and hindrances, using coloring materials. Through thematic analysis, results show that most of the respondents were inclined to choose social service occupations that will help provide housing for their family. However, a considerable number of them expressed fear …

Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci And Developing First Molecular Marker For Race 5 Of Podosphera Xanthii Resistance In Melon (Cucumis Melo L.), Abdullah Ünlü, İlknur Polat, Aytül Yildirim, Ahmet Naci̇ Onus
Turkish Journal of Botany
Powdery mildew of melon caused by the Podosphaera xanthii factor is a disease that causes serious yield losses economically in all areas where melon is grown from Asia to Europe and America. The use of resistant varieties for the control of the disease is the most environmentally friendly method. However, traditional methods of melon breeding have made a noteworthy input to resistance varieties improvement, but they have been slow and incompetent in targeting complex powdery mildew disease resistance traits. To overcome these problems and to facilitate breeding programs, molecular markers closely linked to the Pm-R5 gene are needed for marker-assisted …

‘Complexation’ Of Palm Oil In Indonesia: The Actors And Their Involvement In North Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Mukrimin Mukrimin
‘Complexation’ Of Palm Oil In Indonesia: The Actors And Their Involvement In North Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Mukrimin Mukrimin
Forest and Society
This research examines the complexity of many significant changes in Indonesia's palm oil (PO) industry in North Mamuju, West Sulawesi, focusing on the actors' involvement. The PO commerce in this country continues to grow due to the increasing demand for crude palm oil (CPO) and kernel palm oil (KPO), low labor costs, vast lands, tropical climate, soil conditions, as well as domestic and global demand. Furthermore, private firms and smallholders continue to dominate the OP sector with continuous growth from upstream to downstream. This suggested that the PO industry has substantially impacted and helped change the newly constituted district of …

Reimagining The Right To Public Education, Logan Miller
Reimagining The Right To Public Education, Logan Miller
BYU Education & Law Journal
Critiques of the United States public education system abound. Many of these critiques expose the reality that the public school system regularly fails to do what it purports to do. Others discuss how the public school system in fact achieves some of its more insidious purposes. When the reality of the public schooling experience – especially for students from marginalized communities – is juxtaposed with the lofty rhetoric surrounding public education, a substantial disjuncture is evident: there is a gap between the idealized notions of public education and the actual learning environments and outcomes for many public school students. For …

When the lawn mower engine exploded and the barn caught fire, Mom got the boys together and told them that everything happens for a reason. They were young boys—all three of them between the ages of seven and twelve—and they had never seen such a fire before, nor had they seen a scorched goat, and the dead goats and the fire excited and scared them.
