This project included an archaeological survey by Prof. Andrew Womack and students in ANT-304 Archaeological Methods and Theory in Spring of 2022 on the campus of Furman University. The archaeological survey, located on campus property, exists as part of ongoing research conducted by the “Furman Landscapes Archaeological Project” in order to garner a better understanding of the land-use and occupation history of the current Furman campus. Our focus this season was on the remains of a historic structure visible in aerial photos from the 1940s, but with only a foundation are surrounding debris visible today. The Howard B. Hamilton, MD, papers, MS 66, includes material from 1945-1997 related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). Hamilton was the Chief of Clinical Laboratories for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission from 1956 until its dissolution in 1975. He served in the same capacity for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, which succeeded the ABCC, until 1984. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Hamilton's career, as well as his related scholarly work after his retirement from RERF. See more at MS 066.

The widely applauded conviction of officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd employedthe widely criticized felony murder rule. Should we use felony murder as a tool to check discriminatory and violent policing? The authors object that felony murder—although perhaps the only murder charge available for this killing under Minnesota law—understated Chauvin’s culpability and thereby inadequately denounced his crime. They show that further opportunities to prosecute police for felony murder are quite limited. In their article, “BreadTube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats to Spread Countercultural Ideology,” J.J. Sylvia IV and Kyle Moody analyze the rise of BreadTube. Scholars have argued that YouTube’s algorithms lead to greater radicalization (Ribeiro et al.) and bad actors have weaponized algorithms to draw users into conspiracies (boyd, What Hath We Wrought?). Several alphaviruses, critical human pathogens, have re-emerged in recent years. Alphaviruses are found on all continents and infect both invertebrates and vertebrates, including some aquatic animals. They are classified as arboviruses because hematophagous arthropods transmit them. Based on the symptoms they cause, alphaviruses are classified as either arthritogenic or encephalitic.

Rising global travel has led to outbreaks of infections in new regions, increasing the geographical ranges of alphaviruses and causing new infections in susceptible hosts. Currently, there are no approved prophylactic or therapeutic measures to prevent or treat alphavirus infections; prevention measures have focused on vector control. These measures are …

In the absence of signal imperfections other than the presence of additive white Gaussian (AWGN) noise, Continuous Phase Frequency Shift Keyed (CPFSK) signals with a changing modulation index (referred to in the literature as "multi-h") will have only a few possible starting and end phases at each symbol interval. This allows them to be represented in a trellis diagram where they inherently possess coding gain that can be realized with a Viterbi decoder. However, with a low earth orbit altitude small satellite exhibiting a large time-varying Doppler, the Viterbi decoder fails to maintain this coding gain advantage if the receiver …

US and its allies worked closely to deny the USSR’s access to advanced technologies during the Cold War. In addition to multilateral mechanisms such as CoCom, they also took similar unilateral measures despite disputes between them. Yet, compared to the US-Soviet strategic rivalry, US-allies cooperation over technology denials against China is much less coordinated. Allies have not only taken different unilateral policies but also shown major disputes with the US. In recent years, the global economy has been beset by cyber-attacks. These events disrupt business and governmental operations, large and small, and include broad-horizon attacks on infrastructure and pointed network takeovers. The attacks can include malicious online activities directed at stealing financial and intellectual property or, manipulating, destroying, and denying access to critical information. Despite increased awareness of these challenges, the victimization of private and public networks continues, and the economic impacts mount daily. This research will present the economic impact of cyberattacks on United States businesses and governmental agencies.

The democratic peace theory holds that democracies rarely, if ever, go to war with one another based on the institutional and normative features of democratic governments. Alternatively, the capitalist peace theory insists that, rather than the democratic nature of a government, states opt out of warfare when their economic interests are at play – whether that be trade interdependence or general market features. Traditionally, scholars have focused on explaining the causes of Militarized Interstate Disputes (MIDs) among advanced industrialized democracies. Based on the tenets of capitalism and a new outcome variable of intervention (e.g., coups), this thesis uses two instances …

Space And Existential Risk: The Need For Global Coordination And Caution In Space Development, Chase Hamilton

This Article examines urgent risks resulting from outer space activities under the current space law regime. Emerging literature alarmingly predicts that the risk of a catastrophe that ends the human species this century is approximately 10–25%. Continued space development may increase, rather than decrease, overall existential risk due in part to crucial and identifiable market failures. Addressing these shortcomings should take priority over the competing commercial, scientific, and geopolitical interests that currently dominate in space policy. Sensible changes, including shifting space into a closed-access commons as envisioned by the 1979 Moon Treaty, may help in achieving existential security.
