This research will explore the multiple dimensions of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and their impact on civilians living in conflict zones. Current data gathered on the impact of UAS addresses their physical nature but not the psychological power they wield. UAS have been argued as one of the most humane weapons of warfare, but the same literature does not acknowledge their inherent asymmetry. Notably, ‘drone’ refers to both weaponized and unweaponized unmanned aerial vehicles whose tasks range from targeted killings to delivering medical supplies to taking photographs. Background: Daily rhythms are observed in humans and almost all other organisms. Most of these observed rhythms reflect both underlying endogenous circadian rhythms and evoked responses from behaviours such as sleep/wake, eating/fasting, rest/activity, posture changes and exercise. For many research and clinical purposes, it is important to understand the contribution of the endogenous circadian component to these observed rhythms. The validity of intrusive intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations in the maritime and air domains depends on the location from which the operation is conducted. Intrusive ISR conducted beyond the territorial sea and national airspace is considered an internationally lawful use of the sea that is not subject to coastal State jurisdiction or interference. Using film in the classroom to teach history has long been endorsed as an effective pedagogical method when the lessons’ purposes and goals are clearly supported with facts. This article, which includes a National Council for the Social Studies C3 inquiry-based lesson plan, is targeted for educators who aspire to help students understand basic European Medieval history and engage in critical thinking. Population Genomic Characterization Of Cercospora Janseana On Rice In The Southern United States, Jacob Searight

Cercospora janseana is the causative agent of narrow brown leaf spot (NBLS). Effort had been undertaken since the 1940’s to control this disease through resistance breeding in the Southern United States. However, a severe epidemic of NBLS in 2006 inspired renewed focus on managing this disease. One tool for managing this disease has been identified among resistant cultivars, the CRSP-2.1 resistance locus to NBLS. One thing limiting the investment and deployment of CRSP-2.1, and other unknown resistance genes, is the historical observation that resistance to NBLS rapidly breaks-down in the field. An Anthropology With Human Waste Management: Non-Humans, The State, And Matters Of Care On The Placencia Peninsula, Belize, William Alex Webb

The management of human waste is a seldom studied phenomenon in anthropology. Yet across the globe, in countries both rich and poor, it presents pervasive and difficult to tame problems. This dissertation draws on complimentary theories of management and entanglements to explore the practices and processes of organizing human waste on the Placencia Peninsula, Belize. The results illustrate how problems are conditioned and defined by messy relations between institutions, people, technologies, materials, and ecological life.

Síi Túupentak (CA-SCA-565/H) is a late precontact ancestral Ohlone village and cemetery site in central California (ca. 540-145 cal. BP). Integration of proteomic, genomic, and osteological analyses provided highly confident biological sex estimates for remains of most individuals at this site (65 of 76) spanning all age groups—from perinatal infants to aged adults. The comprehensive nature of the data allowed us to generate sex-specific Kaplan-Meyer survivorship curves for this burial population of sedentary hunter-gatherers. As was common among societies pre-dating modern western medicine and antibiotics, infant mortality was high for both males and females. However, male infants (from birth to …

Similar to previous pandemics, COVID-19 has been succeeded by well-documented postinfectious sequelae, including chronic fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, myalgia, and concentration difficulties, which may last 5 to 12 weeks or longer after the acute phase of illness. Both the psychological stress of SARS-CoV-2 infection and being diagnosed with COVID-19 can upregulate cortisol, a stress hormone that disrupts the efferocytosis effectors, macrophages, and natural killer cells, leading to the excessive accumulation of senescent cells and disruption of biological barriers. This dissertation charts the significant, if understudied, history of American horses during the era of World War I, from roughly 1914 to 1919. Its chapters trace how the US Army acquired, used, cared for, and ultimately demobilized horses over the course of that conflict. Beginning with their acquisition, via either an Army Horse Breeding Program or a complicated buying process, horses faced a complex introduction into military service. The emerging infectious disease (EID) crisis represents an immediate existential threat to modern humanity. Current policies aimed at coping with the EID crisis are ineffective and unsustainably expensive. They have failed because they are based on a scientific paradigm that produced the parasite paradox. The Stockholm paradigm (SP) resolves the paradox by integrating four elements of evolutionary biology: ecological fitting, sloppy fitness space, coevolution, and responses to environmental perturbations. It explains why and how the EID crisis occurs and is expanding and what happens after an EID emerges that sets the stage for future EIDs. The SP provides a number …

Deception and disinformation are as much a part of the battlefield as bullets and bombs. However, just like with bullets and bombs, if the law does not properly regulate a capability’s use the capability could degrade faith in the law. In this respect, this paper examines deepfake technology, a modern artificial intelligence-based capability that can generate superficially-perfect yet wholly invented media content. The paper looks ahead to its potential future applications in armed conflict, processes the ways in which current law contemplates such deception, and distills recommendations for improving governance where needed.

I will argue, we can construct effective means for norming the use of autonomous weapons short of a total ban by building upon the foundation of existing requirements stipulated in Article 36 of Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions that all new weapons technologies be reviewed for compliance with the International Law of Armed Conflict (ILOAC) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is building modern surface combatants faster than any other navy in the world. Before these new ships can be deployed, however, their crews must learn how to effectively operate them across the range of missions for which they were designed.
