World War II was a profoundly transforming experience in the development of the South and the state of Florida. As historian George Tindall has noted of the region, “To a greater degree than the previous war it put people on the move: to shipyards, war plants, training camps, and far-flung battlefields.” Military facilities costing more than four billion dollars came into being throughout the South, and Florida shared fully in this expansion. The war also brought increased prosperity to both rural and urban areas and hastened the demands of black residents for greater political and economic opportunities.

Carpetbagger reputations suffered greatly for most of the century following the end of Reconstruction. Within the past few decades, however, historians have reexamined the careers of many of these individuals and discovered that they made more positive contributions to southern life than previously thought.1 On the regional level this trend was exemplified by the 1988 publication of Richard N. Although critical to American military operations in the Third Seminole War, Fort Myers would have probably faded into history after its abandonment in 1858 if not for the Civil War. Towards the end of that bloody conflict the post took on a new significance for both sides. Not only did the Union reactivate the fort in the very midst of a presumed Confederate stronghold, but it staffed the garrison with black troops— the ultimate insult to those Southerners who stubbornly remained true to the Stars and Bars. William Tecumseh Sherman graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1840, while the United States Army was fighting the Second Seminole War. About three months later this young second lieutenant, an Ohio native, received his first assignment as an officer, and joined the Third Artillery in Florida. Sherman spent the next seventeen months serving at three posts— Fort Pierce, Fort Lauderdale, and Picolata— from which he scouted swamps to find elusive Indians, led an expedition to bring in Coacoochee (Wild Cat)— one of the most colorful Seminole leaders— and commanded a supply depot. An overemphasis on technology among Canadian privacy scholars has neglected other important historical factors in the development of privacy law. The chapter aims to help fill that void through a case study examining how a broader Post War paradigm, centred on freedom of information, impacted on Canada's most important early privacy laws, including Canada's first privacy law - Part VI of the Canadian Human Rights Act (1977); the federal Privacy Act (1983); and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)(2000). The United States is under siege; however, the cause is not a foreign adversary. Rather, infighting among states to attract and retain big businesses is jeopardizing the Nation’s economic prosperity.

States compete for businesses, using tax incentives, hoping to capitalize on the benefits these businesses represent. Benefits include improved job growth numbers, a future increase in tax revenue, or, simply, elevated political clout. While competition can lead to a more efficient use of resources, unregulated competition between states for businesses does not illustrate this theory. Our research focuses on self-rated general health and access to healthcare among veterans. We used data collected by the 2010 National Survey of Veterans, a nationally representative survey of veterans in the U.S. The purpose is to identify and assess aspects of military experiences which could be responsible for differences in veterans’ health and their access to healthcare. Specifically, we investigate how exposure to combat, as well as exposure to specific traumas, can have a lasting impact on the health of veterans. Frontal polymerization (FP) is a process in which a front propagates in a localized reaction zone converting monomer into polymer. This work explored the kinetics and applications of FP for the development of cure-on-demand materials.

The kinetic effects of fillers on frontal polymerization have not been thoroughly explored. In Chapter 2, various fillers were used, and their effects on front velocity and front temperature were determined. Clay minerals are primarily used, but the thermal conductive effects of milled carbon fiber were also explored. It was found that some fillers inhibit frontal polymerization through radical scavenging, while others increased the front …

The relativistic magnetron with diffraction output (MDO) is one of the most efficient
microwave sources for sub-100 ns pulses. For pulse widths greater than 100 ns, the microwave production stops due to anode-cathode (A−K) gap closure. In the presence of a solid cathode, the anode and cathode plasmas expand towards each other, shorting the gap. First shown by Britain’s civilian population during the Blitz, this Blitz Spirit is widely understood today as a heroic display of courage, cheerfulness, unity, and the ability to “keep calm and carry on” in the face of danger and discomfort. Drawing from radio broadcasts, photographs, propaganda posters and films, and the wartime morale reports of Mass-Observation, I seek to uncover the true Blitz Spirit and how it became an integral – if somewhat mythicized – element of Britain’s modern identity. Radio Frequency Fingerprinting (RFF) is often proposed as an authentication mechanism for wireless device security, but application of existing techniques in multi-channel scenarios is limited because prior models were created and evaluated using bursts from a single frequency channel without considering the effects of multi-channel operation. Our research evaluated the multi-channel performance of four single-channel models with increasing complexity, to include a simple discriminant analysis model and three neural networks. Performance characterization using the multi-class Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) revealed that using frequency channels other than those used to train the models can lead to a deterioration in performance from …
