Mental Age V Chronological Age: Rethinking Our Approach To Criminal Responsibility For Developmentally Delayed Young Persons Under The Youth Criminal Justice Act, Michael Michel Dec 2022

Mental Age V Chronological Age: Rethinking Our Approach To Criminal Responsibility For Developmentally Delayed Young Persons Under The Youth Criminal Justice Act, Michael Michel

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) is meant to ensure that only the most serious cases warrant imprisonment. Both in the pre- and post-trial stages of a criminal proceeding, the YCJA contains safeguards designed to divert youth away from correctional institutions and encourage the use of community-based services. Yet, for youth suffering from mental disorders or injuries that cause significant cognitive impairment, these safeguards can be inadequate, detrimental, or simply unavailable. To resolve this shortcoming, this article advocates using mental age, rather than chronological age, as the benchmark for determining criminal responsibility under the YCJA.

Factors Influencing Young Consumers’ Impulse Intentions Toward Visiting Pop-Up Stores In South Africa, Miriam-Miri Retief, Bertha Jacobs, Ann-Marie Fiore

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

Consumers are constantly seeking out new and memorable experiences. This study empirically examines how external factors, such as the characteristics of innovation (relative advantage, trialability, observability, low complexity, compatibility) and exterior store design, and internal factors (positive mood, hedonic motivations, consumer innovativeness) aff ect young consumers’ impulse intention toward visiting pop-up stores in the South African context. Survey data was collected from a convenient sample of 461 students from two universities in South Africa via a self-administered questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis revealed that (a) external factors related to the characteristics of innovation (i.e., compatibility and low complexity), (b) exterior store …

In recent years, different global events have led to increased awareness of the benefits of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and education. Notably, the aviation industry is seeing increased research initiatives to promote DEI among all generations. Nevertheless, given the rising concerns about mental health in higher education, this paper sought to connect coping and addressing mental health through implementing DEI teachings in aviation education. Integrating DEI in the aviation classroom can be challenging, as many faculty members might feel uncomfortable addressing the topic in their courses. Consequently, the researchers proposed and tested an aviation education approach …

A Mobile Phone Text Messaging Intervention To Manage Fatigue For People With Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury, And Stroke: Development And Usability Testing, Kerri A. Morgan, Alex W K Wong, Kim Walker, Rachel Heeb Desai, Tina M Knepper, Pamela K Newland

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Fatigue significantly affects daily functioning in persons with disabilities. Fatigue management can be challenging, and the information provided during routine physician visits to manage fatigue can be overwhelming. One way to address fatigue is to increase knowledge, skills, and confidence for self-management (ie, patient activation). Self-management programs have shown promising effects in targeting fatigue in persons with disabilities. However, satisfaction with self-management programs is low for persons with disabilities, and tailoring interventions to personalized needs has been recommended. SMS text messaging is increasingly being used to implement health behavior change interventions in a person's natural environment. Little has been …

Can A Combined Agriculture And Nutrition Behaviour Change Intervention Improve Women’S Empowerment? A Mixed Methods Feasibility Study In Rural Bangladesh, Elizabeth K. Kirkwood, Michael J. Dibley, Wajiha Khatun, Gulshan Ara, Mansura Khanam, Anowarul Bokshi, Mu Li, Neeloy Ashraful Alam

The Qualitative Report

Many agricultural and home gardening interventions aim to improve the nutritional status of women and children in low- and middle-income countries by focusing on women as the recipients of the intervention and make assumptions that women will be empowered as a result. This paper examines the potential impact of an intervention study that combined home garden training and support, and nutrition behaviour change communication, with a social safety net payment, on women’s empowerment in rural Bangladesh. We assessed the implementation of this study in terms of feasibility, acceptability, and practical application. Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with randomly selected women …

Migrant Visits Over Time: Ethnographic Returning And The Technological Turn, Loretta Baldassar Dec 2022

Migrant Visits Over Time: Ethnographic Returning And The Technological Turn, Loretta Baldassar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper reflects on four decades of research (via ethnographic returning) to explore the social transformations in travel and communication technologies that have impacted the lived experiences, and consequently the theoretical conceptualization, of migrant visits. A comparison of migration waves between Italy and Australia reveals both continuities in visiting experience as deeply relational practices that facilitate a mutuality of being, but also transformations brought about by the technological turn. Visits take on different meanings depending on individual/ family life stage, generation, and community and national histories. The capacity for both physical and virtual copresence must be understood as coconstitutive, requiring …

The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Self-Silencing Behaviours And Symptoms In Women With Fibromyalgia., Alison M. Bacon, Leah White

School of Psychology

Poor adult health has consistently been associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The process is not fully understood but is likely to involve a complex interaction of biological and psychosocial factors. Early life stress can affect the developing brain resulting in long-term hyper-responses to stress and raised inflammatory biomarkers. Women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) frequently report ACEs and also self-sacrificial behaviours whereby they repress their own needs and emotions to preserve personal relationships. This behavioural profile (termed self-silencing) may develop following ACEs but has not previously been considered in the context of FMS. This study examined whether self-silencing mediates the …

Pursuit To Valenciennes 1918: The Fate Of Soldiers At The Point Of Capture, Brian Pascas

Canadian Military History

This article tracks the Canadian Corps’ pursuit of the retreating German army in the last weeks of the First World War. As French hamlets, villages and towns were liberated, the war-weary troops—nursing grudges after almost four years of war—encountered civilians who had endured poor and sometimes brutal treatment under the yoke of the cruel invader. During the Battle of Valenciennes hundreds of German soldiers were killed; the vast majority perished under immense artillery barrages. But a number who survived the onslaught of shells and bullets succumbed to Canadians’ rifles while or after surrendering. Motives are identified that drove frontline soldiers …

Unlocking Passion And Setting Students Free: The Impact Of Culturally Relevant Writing Instruction In A Middle School English I Classroom, Adam Whitaker, Trina J. Davis, Mónica V. Neshyba

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Culturally relevant writing instruction has the potential to validate the voices of students often not heard. Documented disparities in student writing proficiency in grades K-12 indicate a pressing need to employ more effective approaches in facilitating writing instruction. This paper presents the findings of a mixed methods research study that explored eighth grade English I students’ middle school reading and writing preferences, writing experiences, and the impact of culturally relevant writing instruction. Data were gathered from 63 students via reflective journals, writing interest forms, learning logs, and writing artifacts collected throughout a 3-week writing unit. Our findings reveal that writing …

Examining The Influence Of Information Technology On Health Behaviors And Health Outcomes, Mohammad Moinul Islam Murad

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Information Technology (IT) has radically changed our daily lives and it has the potential to help us adopt healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes. This two-part study investigates the influence of IT on health behaviors in population health management. Crises lead to severe uncertainty, high-risk perceptions, and vulnerability among people. Crisis communication through social media platforms influences people to undertake recommended behaviors that mitigate crisis consequences. Political leaders utilize Twitter to deliver crisis messages that offer mental support and empower local communities to spawn resilience and adaptability with emergent collective behaviors necessary to respond to the crisis. The primary objective …

Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On College Students And Their Teamwork Abilities, Cameron Garde

Honors Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic left a significant negative impact on the mental health of the world, most notably on traits that affect how people work well with others. Previous research into the effects of the pandemic have found how education has been impacted from the sides of both colleges and students to detract from upper education as a whole. Teamwork and group efforts also ran into unforeseen issues, heavily impacting college students both in the middle of and well past the effects of pandemic restrictions. This thesis uses and analyzes data from a survey disseminated to the University of New Haven …

We draw from diary entries and follow-up interviews with eighteen undergraduate researchers at two different institutions, analyzing the rhetorical and affective elements of undergraduate research. Connecting undergraduate research with the concept of meaningful writing, we conclude by offering recommendations for teachers, mentors, and administrators.

A Classical Model Of Speculative Asset Price Dynamics, Sabiou M. Inoua, Vernon L. Smith Dec 2022

A Classical Model Of Speculative Asset Price Dynamics, Sabiou M. Inoua, Vernon L. Smith

ESI Working Papers

In retrospect, the experimental findings on competitive market behavior called for a revival of the old, classical, view of competition as a collective higgling and bargaining process (as opposed to price-taking behaviors) founded on reservation prices (in place of the utility function). In this paper, we specialize the classical methodology to deal with speculation, an important impediment to price stability. The model involves typical features of a field or lab asset market setup and lends itself to an experimental test of its specific predictions; here we use the model to explain three general stylized facts, well established both empirically and …

Rewriting Kendra’S Law: A More Ethical Approach To Mental Health Treatment, James Diven

Pace Law Review

Michelle Go was pushed in front of a subway car by a man suffering from schizophrenia that had fallen through the cracks of New York’s mental health care system. Michelle’s death was imminent because the severely ill man had every right to be on the streets under present law. This note will discuss the problems with New York’s mental hygiene laws that prevent courts from mandating treatment even when treatment is in the state’s best interest.

Michelle’s death is not unique. Historically, New York has struggled to enact effective legislation governing the treatment of mentally ill individuals. As a result, …

Philippine Journal of Physical Therapy

Introduction:

Studies have already investigated the practice of physical therapists (PTs) in promoting non-treatment physical activity (NTPA). However, these were done in the context of mostly western settings or were not specific to older adult practice. It is still unclear if a similar level of practice and perspectives on NTPA promotion exists in a setting where physical therapy is more associated with rehabilitation than health promotion, such as in the Philippines. Therefore, this study aimed to describe Filipino PTs' knowledge of WHO physical activity (PA) guidelines and their use of behavioral change techniques (BCTs) and theories when promoting PA in …

Study Of The Effect On The Introduction Of A Lockdown (Covid-19 Pandemic) On Abnormal Return Rate, Marcin Kot

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

In general, everyone has an individual approach to investing their capital. In the case of the capital market, two extreme approaches can be observed, for some investors the key is the security of investments while for others it is maximization of profits. There are also many investors who follow their own beliefs when making decisions – the emotional factor. Such behavior is explained by a relatively new field, namely behavioral finance. Its inseparable elements are exchange rate fluctuations. The amplitude of occurring fluctuations increases in case of unexpected random events. One such event was COVID-19 and the announcements of lockdowns …
