Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to recent studies, there has been increasing concern of terrorist threats to U.S. stadiums. The research problem is that existing U.S. stadium policies, procedures, and plans do not adequately address evacuation of special populations in the event of a terrorist threat. There is a particular concern regarding the adequacy of existing stadium evacuation plans for patrons with special needs. In the current study there were three research questions examining the organizational deficiencies and best practices of stadium evacuation plans currently in place to respond to terrorist threats How situational crime prevention (SCP) can help in the identification of deficiencies …

Perceptions Of Associate Degree Nursing Faculty Of A Primary End-Of-Life Care Course Within Prelicensure Nursing Curricula, Katherine Zaharchuk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe responsibility for educating U.S. nursing students on end-of-life (EOL) care concepts lies with prelicensure nursing programs; however, the majority of all prelicensure nursing programs offer only a few lectures, and only a small percentage offer EOL and palliative care courses. The lack of education on EOL care results in greater stress for nurses, poor symptom management for patients, and reduced support for family caregivers. There is limited knowledge on why primary EOL education has not yet been adopted by many Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of ADN …

A Case Study Of Elementary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Response To Intervention In Special Education Referrals, Heather Abney Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students identified as at-risk are overrepresented in special education due to specific learning disability referrals and placement. The problem is that elementary teachers’ perceptions of Response to Intervention (RTI) in special education referrals need to be examined due to excessive special education referrals due to lack of individualized instruction and formative data to assess how well the RTI model is implemented. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine elementary teachers’ perceptions regarding the implementation of RTI and the influence of the model on appropriate student referrals for special education services. The conceptual framework for this qualitative project study …

Strategies Small Business Human Resources Leaders Use To Reduce Voluntary Employee Turnover, Kristina Afonso
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small businesses are negatively affected when employees voluntarily leave their jobs. Small business human resources (HR) leaders who implement strategies can enhance employee job satisfaction to reduce voluntary employee turnover. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies small business HR leaders use to reduce voluntary employee turnover. The participants were five small business HR leaders from five different organizations in southern California who successfully implemented strategies to reduce voluntary employee turnover. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and company document reviews. Data were analyzed using Yin’s five phases. Three themes …
Relationship Between The Employee Incentive System, Employee Development System, And Employee Work-Related Stress, Ali Sattea Ali Al Ajaj
Relationship Between The Employee Incentive System, Employee Development System, And Employee Work-Related Stress, Ali Sattea Ali Al Ajaj
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Business owners are concerned with employee work-related stress, as it is the most important predictor of employee incentives and employee development practices. Grounded in Siegrist’s theory of effort/reward imbalance, the purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to examine the relationship between employee incentive, employee development, and employee work-related stress. The participants were 88 employees of a private power sector organization who completed the SurveyMonkey link questionnaires and complied with the survey inclusion criteria. The results of the multiple linear regression were significant, F (2, 85) = 7.167, p < 0.05, R2 = 0.144. In the final model, employee development was significant (t = 3.306, p = .001, β = 0.340) and incentive was nonsignificant. A key recommendation is for business leaders and managers to develop their employees by creating development working practices, acknowledging employees’ achievements, and providing the best employee career programs. The implications for positive social change include the potential to mitigate any employee’s work-related stress and thus support the local community workforce.

Analysis Of National Origin Discrimination Suits Filed With The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Arantxa N. Almodovar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Workplace discrimination has been a focus of scholars for several decades. Previous research has uncovered the practice of implicit bias in the form of pre-employment discrimination against minority groups based on factors not reflective of their work ethic or qualifications. The purpose of this study was to analyze national origin discrimination suits filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to understand why pre-employment discrimination continues to be a recurring issue in the workforce. The analysis focused on 46 randomly selected national origin discrimination lawsuits—two suits for each year between 1997 and 2020—of public record, which included the type of organization …

The constructivist self-development theory and the resilience theory were used as the framework for the study. The professional quality of life scale was used to measure the independent variables and VT. The resilience scale …
Disparities In The Sentencing Of African American Men In Wayne County, Michigan, Brian Banks
Disparities In The Sentencing Of African American Men In Wayne County, Michigan, Brian Banks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe ability of judges in the U.S. criminal justice system to administer penalties based on a defendant’s socioeconomic status has resulted in a disproportionate number of African Americans receiving harsher penalties than those of other racial groups and socioeconomic statuses. Currently, there is little evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of harsher sentencing of defendants with lower socioeconomic statuses in preventing crime or lowering recidivism, but more work is needed to clarify what sentencing factors judges use. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the factors that Wayne County, Michigan, judges used during the sentencing process of criminal defendants, along …

Assessing Relationships Among Autonomy, Supportive Leadership, And Burnout In Public Elementary Teachers, Jana Rose Benson
Assessing Relationships Among Autonomy, Supportive Leadership, And Burnout In Public Elementary Teachers, Jana Rose Benson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractStress and burnout among teachers are serious problems because of the negative consequences associated with them that have contributed to the current crisis in the American education system. Until the problems of teacher stress and burnout are understood and addressed, efforts to restructure American education cannot succeed. This study assessed the relationships among perceived autonomy, perceived transformational leadership style and burnout in public elementary teachers, and the moderating/mediating influence of teacher orientation (Montessori and traditional) on burnout levels. An integration of Maslach’s multi-dimensional burnout theory, self-determination theory, and the theory of transformational leadership formed the theoretical foundation of the study. …

Developing Resiliency Knowledge In New Graduate Nurses Through Self-Care Education, Keera Byrd
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During the transition to practice, new graduate nurses (NGNs) face conflict and uncertainty influenced by lack of resiliency and self-care knowledge. In a rural hospital, NGNs had minimal standardized guidance during the transition to practice. Without a proper understanding of resiliency and self-care knowledge, NGNs could not adapt to change and risked leaving the profession or harming patients. A self-care staff education project was developed to improve knowledge of resiliency in a group of NGNs. Self-care deficit theory provided the framework for the project. Sources of evidence published between 2017 and 2022 were used as well as previously analyzed data …
Exploring Parent Support For School-Based Health Programs To Reduce Childhood, Alaphiah Delaney Campbell Byfield
Exploring Parent Support For School-Based Health Programs To Reduce Childhood, Alaphiah Delaney Campbell Byfield
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rise in childhood obesity rates continues globally despite the design and implementation of social programs aimed at curtailing that phenomenon. The government of Jamaica has indicated that a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach is needed to control obesity. The literature has shown that in Jamaica, support for being fluffy impedes progress toward addressing the problem of childhood obesity; being fluffy is considered attractive and a sign that one has a good life. Studies have shown that obese or overweight children are at risk for developing psychosocial (e.g., having low self-esteem, and underperforming academically) and medical problems (e.g., noncommunicable diseases such as …
