Code-Switching In Jordanian Stand-Up Comedy A Humor Tool And A Means To Reflect Social Diversity, Ghaida Al-Quran
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
This article discusses the function of code-switching in Jordanian stand-up comedy. Drawing on Hoffman (1991) and Troike (1982), analysis of twenty performances presented by Jordanian stand-up comedians revealed that the alternation between colloquial Jordanian Arabic, the dialect these performances are mainly delivered in, Standard Arabic, and sometimes English does not only emphasize the humorous role of this genre, but also reflects the social diversity among Jordanians and helps in building rapport with them regardless of their different backgrounds.

The Concept Of “Investment” At The Dawn Of The Digital Era, Dmitry A. Pentsov
The Concept Of “Investment” At The Dawn Of The Digital Era, Dmitry A. Pentsov
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
New methods of doing international business, which have appeared in the process of digital transformation of economic and social life, have not gone unnoticed by a number of States that use tax and administrative methods to regulate them. One possible way to protect the interests of operators of digital business models from such regulation could be bringing claims against these States on the basis of bilateral and multilateral treaties for the promotion and protection of investments. Among the mandatory conditions for the presentation of such claims is the presence in the territory of a host State of protected “investments” within …

Conflict Resolution Procedures Within The Courtroom: Between The Adversarial And Inquisitorial Traditions, Amos Gabrieli, Michal Alberstein
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
Modern courts have evolved around two central legal traditions—the adversarial and the inquisitorial. The two traditions have historically reflected different approaches towards consent and authority or towards conflict resolution and strict application of the law. Yet with the blurring of boundaries between the two legal traditions, and alongside various reforms in adversarial and inquisitorial legal systems, new practices of judicial conflict resolution within the courtroom have developed. This Article will compare the two legal traditions and examine the assimilation of ideologies and procedures typical to conflict resolution processes into the work of judges, as they strive to end civil legal …
Attributing Criminal Responsibility For The Crime Of Aggression, Nikola R. Hajdin
Attributing Criminal Responsibility For The Crime Of Aggression, Nikola R. Hajdin
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
To hold a person criminally responsible, the prosecution must prove that his conduct violated (without justification) a prohibitory norm of the criminal code and that he is culpable for such wrongdoing. In international criminal law, wrongfulness and culpability are assessed through the prisms of material (actus reus) and mental (mens rea) elements, respectively. Also called “objective attribution,” ascribing wrongfulness requires a causal link between individual conduct and criminal consequences. Attributing culpability, or “subjective attribution,” on the other hand, consists of establishing mental links between the perpetrator and the occurrence he has caused and the situation in which such an event …

Growth factors (GF) are critical cytokines in wound healing. However, the direct delivery of these biochemical cues into a wound site significantly increases the cost of wound dressings and can lead to a strong immunological response due to the introduction of a foreign source of GFs. To overcome this challenge, we designed a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel with the potential capacity to sequester autologous GFs directly from the wound site. We demonstrated that synthetic peptide sequences covalently tethered to PEGDA hydrogels physically retained human transforming growth factor beta 1 (hTGFβ1) and human vascular endothelial growth factor (hVEGF) at 3.2 …
Putting The Coronavirus To Work: Developing A Global Engineering Program During A Pandemic, Cynthia S. Chalupa
Putting The Coronavirus To Work: Developing A Global Engineering Program During A Pandemic, Cynthia S. Chalupa
Journal of International Engineering Education
In the aftermath of COVID-19 shutdowns at campuses across the U.S. in the spring of 2020, student enrollments have fallen and budgets have been severely constrained. To counteract the current and long-term repercussions of the pandemic on institutions of higher education, administrators have called for innovative program development and strategic transformation. In the past, many engineering and world languages departments may have considered the task of creating a collaborative degree program insurmountable or undesirable despite existing models that are successful (e.g. University of Rhode Island’s IEP program). In the era of COVID-19, however, innovative programs combining language with disciplines outside …

Losartan is an oral antihypertensive agent that is rapidly metabolized to EXP3174 (angiotensin-subtype-1-receptor blocker) and EXP3179 (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma [PPARγ] agonist), which was shown in animal studies to reduce inflammation, enhance mitochondrial energetics, and improve muscle repair and physical performance. We conducted an exploratory pilot study evaluating losartan treatment in prefrail older adults (age 70-90 years, N = 25). Participants were randomized to control (placebo) or treatment (daily oral losartan beginning at 25 mg per day and increasing every 8 weeks) for a total of 6 months. Fatigue, hyperkalemia, and hypotension were the most observed side effects of losartan …

Relationships Between Principles Of Gems Classification In Bhoja’S Yuktikalpataru And Ayurvedic Principles, Aroonwan Kongmebhol
Journal of Letters
According to the lapidary section in Yuktikalpataru ascribed to King Bhoja, some precious stones were classified by manifold principles, suspected to be predominantly based on Ayurvedic concepts. Research is needed to establish whether these classification schemes were truly based on Ayurvedic theory. This research paper examines gem classification as depicted in the Yuktikalpataru and its conformity with Ayurvedic-based schemes of classification. Research data were selected from descriptions of diamond (vajraparīkṣā) and pearl testing (muktāparīkṣā). Results show significant influence on gem classification of some basic principles of Ayurveda: a classification scheme based, with a few exceptions, on …

Ecological Protection Alone Is Not Enough To Conserve Ecosystem Carbon Storage: Evidence From Guangdong, China, Lihan Cui, Wenwen Tang, Sheng Zheng, Ramesh P. Singh
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The increase in atmospheric CO2 caused by land use and land cover change (LUCC) is one of the drivers of the global climate. As one of the most typical high-urbanization areas, the ecological conflicts occurring in Guangdong Province warrant urgent attention. A growing body of evidence suggests LUCC could guide the future ecosystem carbon storage, but most LUCC simulations are simply based on model results without full consistency with the actual situation. Fully combined with the territorial spatial planning project and based on the land use pattern in 2010 and 2020, we have used the Markov and Patch-generating Land …

BACKGROUND: The existing World Health Organization (WHO) pneumonia case management guidelines rely on clinical symptoms and signs for identifying, classifying, and treating pneumonia in children up to 5 years old. We aimed to collate an individual patient-level data set from large, high-quality pre-existing studies on pneumonia in children to identify a set of signs and symptoms with greater validity in the diagnosis, prognosis, and possible treatment of childhood pneumonia for the improvement of current pneumonia case management guidelines.
METHODS: Using data from a published systematic review and expert knowledge, we identified studies meeting our eligibility criteria and invited investigators to …
Perspectives On Determinism In Quantum Mechanics: Born, Bohm, And The “Quantal Newtonian” Laws, Viraht Sahni
Perspectives On Determinism In Quantum Mechanics: Born, Bohm, And The “Quantal Newtonian” Laws, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
Quantum mechanics has a deterministic Schrödinger equation for the wave function. The Göttingen–Copenhagen statistical interpretation is based on the Born Rule that interprets the wave function as a “probability amplitude.” A precept of this interpretation is the lack of determinism in quantum mechanics. The Bohm interpretation is that the wave function is a source of a field experienced by the electrons, thereby attributing determinism to quantum theory. In this paper, we present a new perspective on such determinism. The ideas are based on the equations of motion or “Quantal Newtonian” Laws obeyed by each electron. These Laws, derived from …

Hospitals see a rise in the critically ill population. These patients present with multiple comorbidities resulting in frequent emergency department trips. Unfortunately, with each visit, these patients require a vascular access device. Over time their veins will no longer be easily accessible. Patients with veins that are no longer visible, palpable, or require special techniques to obtain access are considered to be difficult intravenous access (DIVA) patients. They will likely experience multiple attempts with each admission to the hospital, resulting in physical and emotional pain, not to mention being costly. The purpose of this paper is to compare the advantages …

Esther Inglis: A Franco-Scottish Jacobean Writer And Her Octonaries Upon The Vanitie And Inconstancie Of The World, Jamie Reid Baxter
Studies in Scottish Literature
This article draws attention to the hitherto ignored poetry of the Franco-Scottish Jacobean calligrapher and limner, Esther Inglis (c.1570 -1624). Inglis is the subject of a fast growing body of published scholarship, but though she left a small body of original prose and verse, she has been given no place in Scottish literature. The article falls into six sections. The substantial first section notes first that to date, there has been a tendency to shy away from dealing with her as a writer, and that Inglis’s formative Scottish background has been largely ignored. The second section looks at Inglis and …

Even though engineering programs, accreditation bodies, and multinational corporations have become increasingly interested in introducing global dimensions into professional engineering practice, little work in the existing literature provides an overview of questions fundamental to global engineering ethics, such as what global engineering ethics is, why it should be taught, how it should be taught, and when it should be introduced. This paper describes the what, why, how, and when of global engineering ethics – a form adopted from a 1996 article by Charles Harris, Michael Davis, Michael Pritchard, and Michael Rabins, which has influenced the development of engineering ethics for …

Mental health is an often-overlooked aspect of overall health and wellness (well-being). Mental illness is increasingly common with 1 in 5 American adults experiencing it annually, and 1 in 20 suffering from a serious mental illness each year [1]. Treatment rates for mental illness are lower in men (37.4%) compared to women (51.2%) [1]. Globally, treatment rates are similar with an estimated cost to the global economy of $1 trillion annually, yet less than 2% of government health expenditure is for mental health worldwide [2]. Despite this, only nine studies have been published specifically targeting men’s mental health through lifestyle …

Objectives: Derive latent profiles of accelerometry-measured moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for Hispanic/Latino adults, examine associations between latent MVPA profiles and neurocognition, and describe profiles via self-reported MVPA.
Methods: Complex survey design methods were applied to cross-sectional data from 7,672 adults ages 45-74 years in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL; 2008-2011). MVPA was measured via hip-worn accelerometers. Latent profile analysis was applied to derive latent MVPA profiles (minutes/day of week). Neurocognition was assessed with the Brief-Spanish English Verbal Learning Test (B-SEVLT) Sum, B-SEVLT Recall, Controlled Oral Word Association Test (word fluency), and Digit Symbol Substitution (DSS) test.
