Impact Of Natural Cheese Composition On Proteolysis And Its Effects On Process Cheese Functionality, Natasha Scherber Jan 2022

Impact Of Natural Cheese Composition On Proteolysis And Its Effects On Process Cheese Functionality, Natasha Scherber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cheddar cheese is a commodity and a top-selling cheese in the United States. Enhanced flavors of cheddar cheese requires aging, which will allow proteolysis increase. Proteolysis is the most complex process that happens in cheese manufacturing and can be difficult to control because of environmental factors and compositional characteristics. The ripening process, which is the most timely and costly procedure in cheese manufacturing, can also be unpredictable when aspects, such as cheese composition, are changed. The coagulant is responsible for the first stage in proteolysis, which will produce large peptides. Small peptides are subsequentially produced during the second stage by …

Prairie Cordgrass Cellulose: A Sustainable Resource To Develop Biodegradable Films, Mominul Hoque Jan 2022

Prairie Cordgrass Cellulose: A Sustainable Resource To Develop Biodegradable Films, Mominul Hoque

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plastics are versatile and cost-effective materials with a wide variety of functionalities. Their non-biodegradability, however, is an environmental concern. Plastic waste accumulation in landfills and natural habitats results in health issues, mainly due to the leaching of chemicals from plastic products that further transfer to humans and wildlife. Many countries around the globe have imposed restrictions on plastic use. Despite these concerted efforts, a pressing scientific need exists to find an alternative to plastics. Cellulose from abundant agricultural biomass stands out as a viable alternative due to its robust structure, biocompatibility, biodegradability, low density, and non-toxicity. This research aims to …

Concerns and worries about these devices may be exacerbated over time or by a specific incident. To understand reactions to such situations, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with ten people who reported different types of worrying incidents with a range …

An Awe-Enhanced Wideband Subdomain Dg-Rtc Algorithm In Solving Electromagnetic Problems, Shimin Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Ping Li Jan 2022

An Awe-Enhanced Wideband Subdomain Dg-Rtc Algorithm In Solving Electromagnetic Problems, Shimin Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Ping Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this research, a Robin transmission condition enriched frequency-domain discontinuous Galerkin (DG-RTC) method is proposed to solve the electromagnetic problems. The proposed DG-RTC method directly discretizes the vector wave equation in each subdomain, and the numerical flux is used for the information communication of solutions between neighbor subdomains. Compared with the traditional Maxwell's equations-based DG (ME-DG) method, the proposed DG-RTC method merely solves the E-field in the whole computational region, while the H-field is only present at the interfaces of adjacent subdomains, which thus significantly reduces the number of unknowns. Moreover, the finalized globally coupled matrix equation is split into …

Design Of Dual-Band Mimo Decoupling Network, Min Li, Lijun Jiang, Kwan Lawrence Yeung Jan 2022

Design Of Dual-Band Mimo Decoupling Network, Min Li, Lijun Jiang, Kwan Lawrence Yeung

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the past decades, kinds of decoupling approaches were used to improve isolation among multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas, such as defected ground structure (DGS) [1], parasitic structure [2], decoupling network (DN) [3], etc. However, most were applied to single-band antennas. Dual-band decoupling is still challenging. This paper proposes a method to design the dual-band DN [4] with an arbitrary frequency band ratio (f2/f1). Besides, the proposed DN has a wideband decoupling performance.

Does U.S. Federal Employment Law Now Cover Caste Discrimination Based On Untouchability?: If All Else Fails, There Is The Possible Application Of Bostock V. Clayton County, Kevin Brown, Lalit Khandare, Annapurna Waughray, Kenneth Dau-Schmidt, Theodore M. Shaw

Faculty Publications

This article discusses the issue of whether a victim of caste discrimination based on untouchability can assert a claim of intentional employment discrimination under Title VII or Section 1981. This article contends that there are legitimate arguments that this form of discrimination is a form of religious discrimination under Title VII. The question of whether caste discrimination is a form of race or national origin discrimination under Title VII or Section 1981 depends upon how the courts apply these definitions to caste discrimination based on untouchability. There are legitimate arguments that this form of discrimination is recognized within the concept …

Automated Video Interviewing As The New Phrenology, Ifeoma Ajunwa Jan 2022

Automated Video Interviewing As The New Phrenology, Ifeoma Ajunwa

Faculty Publications

This Article deploys the new business practice of automated video interviewing as a case study to illuminate the limitations of traditional employment antidiscrimination laws. Employment antidiscrimination laws are inadequate to address the unlawful discrimination attributable to emerging workplace technologies which gatekeep employment opportunities. The Article maintains that the practice of automated video interviewing is based on shaky or unproven social scientific principles that disproportionately impact racial minorities. In this way, the practice of automated video interviewing is analogous to the pseudoscience of phrenology, which enabled societal and economic exclusion through the legitimization of eugenicist and racist attitudes. After parsing the …

Public Investment In Climate Resiliency: Lessons From The Law And Economics Of Natural Disasters, Donald T. Hornstein Jan 2022

Public Investment In Climate Resiliency: Lessons From The Law And Economics Of Natural Disasters, Donald T. Hornstein

Faculty Publications

This Article takes issue with an important claim in the public choice and climate disaster literature: that American political markets will not allow appropriate investments in disaster preparedness and prevention, even when those investments are cost-benefit bargains. The claim is significant because the costs of climate disasters in the twenty-first century are estimated to be in the trillions of dollars due to the presence of legacy greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Thus, even assuming a sustained, successful global campaign to limit future greenhouse gases, the ingredients for decades of droughts, wildfires, storms, and floods are already locked into the atmosphere. …

Precautionary Ratemaking, Jonas J. Monast Jan 2022

Precautionary Ratemaking, Jonas J. Monast

Faculty Publications

For more than one hundred years, states have relied on ratemaking to ensure that electric utilities deliver affordable and reliable power to their customers. This process helped keep costs down, but it also produced an electricity system that is a cause of, and vulnerable to, some of the most pressing challenges now facing society: climate change, catastrophic wildfires, extreme storms, and air and water pollution.

This Article argues that risk regulation is an alternate legal foundation for interpreting bedrock principles of ratemaking, such as prudency, reasonableness, least cost, and the public interest. The traditional economic regulator view of ratemaking evaluates …

Impact And Coping Strategies Among Vulnerable Groups: An Urban-Rural Resilience Trajectory Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rizki Fillali, Ana Rosidha Tamyis, Sulton Mawardi, Hening Wikan Sawiji

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound effects on the livelihoods of vulnerable groups. Previous studies have indicated that vulnerable groups in urban areas suffer more economic impacts than their counterparts in rural areas, largely due to mobility restrictions, social and physical distancing measures, and pre-pandemic vulnerabilities, exacerbating the challenges that urban groups face to survive. This article examines variations in the impacts and coping strategies of vulnerable groups in selected urban and rural areas in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic, and determines how these impacts and coping strategies have shaped the trajectory of community resilience. The article argues that although …

The Genetic Diversity And Distribution Of Two Endangered Pit Vipers (Bothriechis Marchi And Cerrophidion Wilsoni) Within Cusuco National Park, Honduras, Debbie Starbuck Jan 2022

The Genetic Diversity And Distribution Of Two Endangered Pit Vipers (Bothriechis Marchi And Cerrophidion Wilsoni) Within Cusuco National Park, Honduras, Debbie Starbuck

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The current extinction rate is being increasingly recognised as an escalating issue, with observations still indicating that humans are the leading cause of a sixth mass extinction. Cloud forests in particular are home to a variety of threatened species, however, many of these forests are highly fragmented resulting in many species and populations existing in isolation. These forests have become centres of endemism for many species, leading to a high representation within global biodiversity hotspots and “irreplaceable” protected areas. This study primarily investigates the genetic diversity and distribution of two recently re-classified, sympatric pit vipers (Bothriechis marchi and Cerrophidion wilsoni) …

Secure Storage Model For Digital Forensic Readiness, Avinash Singh, Richard Adeyemi Ikuesan, Hein Venter Jan 2022

Secure Storage Model For Digital Forensic Readiness, Avinash Singh, Richard Adeyemi Ikuesan, Hein Venter

All Works

Securing digital evidence is a key factor that contributes to evidence admissibility during digital forensic investigations, particularly in establishing the chain of custody of digital evidence. However, not enough is done to ensure that the environment and access to the evidence are secure. Attackers can go to extreme lengths to cover up their tracks, which is a serious concern to digital forensics – particularly digital forensic readiness. If an attacker gains access to the location where evidence is stored, they could easily alter the evidence (if not remove it altogether). Even though integrity checks can be performed to ensure that …

Loguad: Log Unsupervised Anomaly Detection Based On Word2vec, Jin Wang, Changqing Zhao, Shiming He, Yu Gu, Osama Alfarraj, Ahed Abugabah

All Works

System logs record detailed information about system operation and are important for analyzing the system's operational status and performance. Rapid and accurate detection of system anomalies is of great significance to ensure system stability. However, large-scale distributed systems are becoming more and more complex, and the number of system logs gradually increases, which brings challenges to analyze system logs. Some recent studies show that logs can be unstable due to the evolution of log statements and noise introduced by log collection and parsing. Moreover, deep learning-based detection methods take a long time to train models. Therefore, to reduce the computational …

Development And On-Road Applications Of A 1/10-Scale Autonomous Vehicle, Laura Cornejo Paulino Jan 2022

Development And On-Road Applications Of A 1/10-Scale Autonomous Vehicle, Laura Cornejo Paulino

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are a key component in the creation of the new transportation infrastructure. Over the last several decades, nations across the world have experienced an increase in traffic congestion, environmental deprecation due to greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in time loss and productivity. A key factor in these components is the increase in numbers of vehicles on the road, a number that continues to increase gradually every year. In addition, the continued increase in vehicles on the road poses a threat to human and environmental safety. There is strong evidence to support that accidental vehicular deaths and …

Dysfunction, Deference, And Judicial Review, Barry Friedman, Margaret H. Lemos Jan 2022

Dysfunction, Deference, And Judicial Review, Barry Friedman, Margaret H. Lemos

Faculty Scholarship

This symposium poses a provocative question: Should judges exercising the power of judicial review defer to the political branches as a means of giving voice to the “will of the people”? The inquiry assumes a connection between majority will and the outputs of the political branches—a connection we argue is frayed, at best, in the current political context.

In the first part of this Essay, we highlight how well-known aspects of our political system—ranging from representational distortions in federal and state governments to the relationship between partisan polarization and the behavior of elected officials—call into question whether political outcomes reliably …

In a bid to save the planet from rising temperatures, the European Union is introducing a carbon border adjustment mechanism—essentially a levy on imports from countries with weak climate rules. The United States, Canada, and Japan are all openly mulling similar proposals. The Biden Administration is adopting new Buy American rules, while countries around the world debate new supply chain regulations to address public health issues arising from COVID-19 and shortages in critical components like computer chips. These public policy initiatives—addressing the central environmental, public health, and economic issues of the day—all likely violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules governing …

Toward More Robust Self-Regulation Within The Legal Profession, Veronica Root Martinez, Caitlin-Jean Juricic

Faculty Scholarship

The Trump Administration left reverberations throughout American life, and the legal profession was not insulated from its impact. The conduct of lawyers—both public and private—working on behalf of former President Trump was the subject of constant conversation and critique. The reality, however, is that the questions regarding the conduct of the Trump Administration lawyers, are rooted, in part, in more fundamental questions about the appropriate role of the lawyer within society. This Essay advocates for the adoption of a self-regulation scheme whereby lawyers regulate and oversee the conduct of other lawyers, to ensure that members of the legal profession are …

A Restatement Of Corporate Criminal Liability’S Theory And Research Agenda, Samuel W. Buell Jan 2022

A Restatement Of Corporate Criminal Liability’S Theory And Research Agenda, Samuel W. Buell

Faculty Scholarship

This Article, for a collection in which authors were asked to “imagine a world without corporate criminal liability,” specifies the material questions that should be addressed if debate about the doctrine is to progress past longstanding and oft-repeated assertions. The strongest case for corporate criminal liability is based on the potential for its unique reputational effects to contribute to the prevention and deterrence of crime within corporations. Further research should take up a variety of unanswered questions about those effects having to do with mechanisms and audiences. The relevant inquiries are both theoretical and empirical. Answers will lie in further …
