Treating Triple Negative Breast Cancer With Targeted Nano-Therapy, Mikayla Bridges
Treating Triple Negative Breast Cancer With Targeted Nano-Therapy, Mikayla Bridges
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Bone metastasis in breast cancer patients is a prominent problem, with 70% of metastatic breast cancer patients having bone metastasis.[1] The resulting complications are painful and decrease patient survival rate.[1,3] This study is based on the previous lab work of Ross et al., who found that bone metastatic breast cancer cells over-express the integrin αvβ3. Through a series of in vitro experiments, this study sought to investigate the degree to which the single lipid membrane αvβ3-targeted nanoparticles could function as a less toxic and more effective treatment to bone metastatic breast cancer.

Geometric Characterization Of Mouse Intestines Under Applied Loading, Sara-Marie Reed
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
The purpose of this experiment was to apply bench-top imaging (optical coherence tomography or OCT) to intestinal and pelvic floor tissues from mice, focusing on the visualization of these anatomical structures and geometric characterization under applied loading. Quantifying such properties of the intestine will allow for further understanding of this tissue’s response to pressure and its mechanical properties. To supplement the images gathered from the OCT imaging (loaded and unloaded tissue samples), the histology was also examined to further understand the structure of these tissues.

Production Of Nbvzr Refractory Multi-Principal Element Alloy For Research Application, Mikayla Jenkins
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
The objective of this study was to learn about high entropy alloys, multi-principal element alloys, and refractory alloys, as well as to produce a refractory multi-principal element alloy, NbVZr. This report focuses on the compositional error resulting from sample mass before and after an initial arc melting process. With an expected sample weight of 15.00 g per sample, material was initially measured within an average of 0.036% error. After this initial melting process, mass error increased by 0.030%, resulting in an average error of 0.1201%. This can be attributed to sample vaporization, oxidation, and displacement of small particles. For future …

Liberalism And Humanism - The Arab Case, Ibrahem Badran
Liberalism And Humanism - The Arab Case, Ibrahem Badran
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
Liberalism as a school of thought focuses on individul freedom, the rule of law, constitutional government, economic freedom, tolerance of others in thought, apinion and belief, and denial of authoritative regimes. The practical interpretation of liberalism is institutional democracy, equal citizenship and freedom of ownership. Liberalism stems from the fact that individiaul freedom and right is the essence so no authority should not block such freedom. Because "Liberal Capitalism" is not an ideology, every society builds its economy and institutions according to what its experts, thinkers and environment dictate. Hence, countries differ totally in the details of its economic and …

Effect Of Freeze Thaw Cycles On Elbow Mobility In A Long Evans Rat, Sophia Miller
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Throughout the 2022 Fall semester I worked in Dr. Lake’s musculoskeletal soft tissue lab on the Post Traumatic Joint Contracture(PTJC) project. Previous work on this project used a rat model of the elbow to explore different factors affecting this disease and potential treatments. There are many different tests used to quantify the rats progress through this condition. One is range of motion testing. The typical procedure for this project is to sacrifice the animals and then freeze them before performing range of motion testing. This project tested the animals range of motion immediately after sacrifice and then again after the …

Effective antigen delivery facilitates antiviral vaccine success defined by effective immune protective re- sponses against viral exposures. To improve severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV- 2) antigen delivery, a controlled biodegradable, stable, biocompatible, and nontoxic polymeric micro- sphere system was developed for chemically inactivated viral proteins. SARS-CoV-2 proteins encapsulated in polymeric microspheres induced robust antiviral immunity. The viral antigen-loaded microsphere sys- tem can preclude the need for repeat administrations, highlighting its potential as an effective vaccine.

Anti-Cancer Mechanisms Of Action Of Therapeutic Alternating Electric Fields (Tumor Treating Fields [Ttfields]), Shadi Shams, Chirag B Patel
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Despite improved survival outcomes across many cancer types, the prognosis remains grim for certain solid organ cancers including glioblastoma and pancreatic cancer. Invariably in these cancers, the control achieved by time-limited interventions such as traditional surgical resection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy is short-lived. A new form of anti-cancer therapy called therapeutic alternating electric fields (AEFs) or tumor treating fields (TTFields) has been shown, either by itself or in combination with chemotherapy, to have anti-cancer effects that translate to improved survival outcomes in patients. Although the pre-clinical and clinical data are promising, the mechanisms of TTFields are not fully elucidated. Many …

This paper presents the study results on stress and deformation of the piston crown of a biogas engine converted from a conventional diesel engine using dedicated software. The original diesel engine was modified to reduce the compression ratio to suit biogas fuel. The original engine's combustion chamber and compression ratio were changed by modifying the piston crown to a heron type. The parameters of in-cylinder pressure and temperature were determined by the thermodynamic simulation software AVL Boost. Research results show that the in-cylinder pressure decreased compared to diesel when using biogas fuel, but the temperature increased. The infinite element method-based …

The subset of plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) that coprecipitate with low-density lipoprotein (LDL-EVs) carry coagulation and fibrinolysis pathway proteins as cargo. We investigated the association between LDL-EV hemostatic/fibrinolysis protein ratios and post-acute myocardial infarction (post-AMI) left ventricular (LV) remodeling which precedes heart failure. Protein concentrations of von Willebrand factor (VWF), SerpinC1 and plasminogen were determined in LDL-EVs extracted from plasma samples obtained at baseline (within 72 h post-AMI), 1 month and 6 months post-AMI from 198 patients. Patients were categorized as exhibiting adverse (n = 98) or reverse (n = 100) LV remodeling based on changes in LV end-systolic volume …

Determining Kinetic Parameters Of Cellulose And Lignin Pyrolysis By Gaussian Process Regression (Gpr) Method, Pichayaporn Viriya-Amornkij, Kazunori Kuwana
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
The ignition and flame-spread processes in the forest and urban fires involve the pyrolysis reactions of biomass materials. One of the most common methods for estimating the fire performance of a material is the evaluation of kinetic parameters, i.e., activation energy (𝐸), pre-exponential factor (𝐴), and reaction model (𝑓(𝛼)), from thermogravimetric analysis (TG) data. Typically, 𝐸 is estimated based on an Arrhenius-type equation such as Kissinger, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Friedman equations. Then, its value is adjusted along with other parameters by assuming a reaction model, e.g., the 𝑛-order model. This study proposes a Gaussian process regression (GPR) method to determine …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
The green revolution was based on genetic modification of the gibberellin (GA) hormone system with “dwarfing” gene mutations that reduces GA signals, conferring shorter stature, thus enabling plant adaptation to modern farming conditions. Strong GA-related mutants with shorter stature often have reduced coleoptile length, discounting yield gain due to their unsatisfactory seedling emergence under drought conditions. Here we present gibberellin (GA) 3-oxidase1 (GA3ox1) as an alternative semi-dwarfing gene in barley that combines an optimal reduction in plant height without restricting coleoptile and seedling growth. Using large-scale field trials with an extensive collection of barley accessions, we showed that a natural …

Two Sides To Every Psyche: Implications Of Positive Psychology For "Mental Health" Research In Engineering Education, Muhammad Asghar, Angela Minichiello
Engineering Education Student Research
“Mental Health.” Throughout the 20th century, these familiar words have been quietly commandeered by a physiological model of health (Greenspoon & Saklofske, 2001). Unknowingly, society conspired to use these words—colloquially, academically, and scientifically—for the sole purpose of depicting (or implying) negative states of the human mind. Since the origins of psychological research over 100 years ago, our understanding of what mental health is has been conflated with notions of mental illness.
