This dissertation develops a theory of atonement in accordance with N. T. Wright’s covenant-apocalyptic interpretation of the ministry and message of the historical Jesus. A covenant-apocalyptic atonement theory, in opposition to the trajectory of contemporary soteriology, prioritizes divine causality in the means of salvation, because, as is generally expected from an apocalyptic hermeneutic, it peers behind systems of violence and oppression to the intangible powers that underlie them. Unlike other strands of apocalyptic theology, though, a covenant-apocalyptic soteriology can stand up to a liberationist critique of the escapism and the divine sadism of a certain popular form of Christian soteriology, …

Intramundane objects often become “intergenerational transfers of contaminated objects,” commonly known as heirlooms (Belk 151; Heisley and Cours 425; Holmes). Rather than priceless possessions, heirlooms are mostly ordinary objects, such as photographs and gardening tools. Regardless of rarity or monetary value, as familial artifacts, heirlooms compel an ethic of responsibility. For this project, the term “heirlooming” is a performance of communicative practices of story-telling, ritualizing, and kin-keeping that contribute to heirloom preservation and continuation. A narrative ethics background structures family communication to both make meaning and make sense of ongoing and changing practices across generations. Heirlooms situated within family narratives …

In this dissertation, I address the question of whether ground, the relation that obtains between entities e1...en and a further entity e when e ontologically depends on, and is metaphysically explained by, e1...en, should be understood causally and, if so, whether this has any substantive implications. I answer both in the affirmative. I argue that ground and causation are similar enough to motivate characterizing ground as a special kind of causation, and that this can be done if we adopt a powers-theoretic account of causation. Book challenges and bans are more prevalent than ever in the year 2022. The conversations surrounding the challenge of a book are often very stressful for the librarian, teacher, or administrator involved. This project seeks to ease some of that stress by giving the parties involved in conversation a talking frame. These talking frames are based on the norms of civil discourse and make use of sentence stems to guide potentially tense and awkward conversations.

Multi-media publications allow for the exploration of such governments which may never come to be. The video game “The Outer Worlds” by developer Obsidian Games does just that. Throughout the game the philosophy of Corporatocracy, colonialism and revolution is displayed in an explorative format allowing for a deeper insight into this governmental system. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the fictional government “Halcyon Holdings Corporation” and their control over the colonial planetary system of Halcyon.

Cities have little knowledge about their parking infrastructure despite clear evidence that abundant parking has environmental, economic, and transportation consequences. The objective of this thesis is to illustrate the need to accurately estimate the area dedicated to vehicle infrastructure (parking lots and streets) within urban areas. I focused on a method that estimated the vehicle infrastructure area within the Downtown Core of Albuquerque, New Mexico, by cross-referencing geospatial cadastral data with minimum parking requirements. The Clean Water Act has become a centerpiece in an enduring multifront battle against both environmental regulation and federal regulatory power in all of its settings. This Article focuses on the emergence, elements, and linked uses of an antiregulatory arsenal now central to battles over what are federally protected “waters of the United States.” This is the key jurisdictional hook for CWA jurisdiction, and hence, logically, has become the heart of CWA contestation. Human papillomavirus virus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease that can negatively affect both males and females by leading to cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancer. Vaccinating against HPV using the Gardasil vaccine is an effective method to prevent HPV, however, vaccination rates are still unacceptably low in adolescents ages 11 to 14. Pediatric providers should encourage and strongly recommend HPV vaccines to all adolescents. Addressing and easing parental hesitancy is a key component to improving vaccine acceptance. Discharge instructions are an important tool providers use to communicate information to patients about their medical diagnosis after they return to their home environments. When patients understand and follow discharge instructions there are improved outcomes, fewer callbacks, and decreased return visits. The purpose of this quality improvement project were (a) to develop and distribute discharge instructions at or below a sixth-grade reading level, (b) on common diagnoses appropriate for a rural community, (c) decreased the need for subsequent office visits, and (d) decreased call volumes at a rural walk-in clinic. Hsp100 chaperones, also known as Clp proteins, constitute a family of ring-forming ATPases that differ in 3D structure and cellular function from other stress-inducible molecular chaperones. While the vast majority of ATP-dependent molecular chaperones promote the folding of either the nascent chain or a newly imported polypeptide to reach its native conformation, Hsp100 chaperones harness metabolic energy to perform the reverse and facilitate the unfolding of a misfolded polypeptide or protein aggregate. Human AP Endonuclease 1 (APE1) is the primary enzyme in the base excision repair (BER) pathway that repairs apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites, the most frequently formed DNA lesions in the genome. Recently, through genome-wide mapping analysis, we have shown that APE1, as well as its post-translationally modified form, acetylated APE1 (AcAPE1), is enriched in the gene regulatory regions. The APE1/AcAPE1-enriched regions also harbor Guanine (G)-rich sequences that fold into DNA secondary structures called G-quadruplexes (G4s). Our lab has demonstrated a strong genome-wide correlation between the occurrence of G4 structures and the binding of APE1 and AcAPE1. However, it is unknown whether …

This method was adopted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in some of their specification standards. The method utilized hand torque instead of the pull method previously used by the NFPA to determine the Percent Bare Hand Control Value (%BHCV). The %BHCV, compares torque results of a gloved hand versus a bare hand. Protein kinase Cα (PKCα) is a member of the PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, which have been implicated in regulation of many cellular processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and transformation. A large body of evidence from the Black laboratory and others support an anti-proliferative function of PKCα in normal epithelial tissues, including the intestinal mucosa and endometrial epithelium. PKCα is also tumor suppressive in epithelial cancers, such as colorectal cancer (CRC) and endometrial cancer (EC). Patients who are immunosuppressed, such as solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs), are known to have a higher risk of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). This population is at a higher risk of metastasis and worse disease-specific survival, with over 1 million cases and an estimated 3,932 to 8,791 deaths each year in the United States. Large cancer genomic databases have reported on genomic drivers for many cancer subtypes, yet cSCC has not been included. In an attempt to increase the residence time of PSMA-targeted theranostics inside the prostate cancer cells and tumors, we designed and prepared a CPTA-PSMATA resembling PSMA-617 by adding a well-known cysteine protease inhibitor (E-64) to the conjugate. Lysosomal proteases, including cysteine, serine, and aspartic families of hydrolytic enzymes, are expressed in high concentrations in the lysosomes and are responsible for the catabolism of proteins inside the cell [165, 278]. We proposed that after successful internalization of the PSMA-targeted conjugates into the cells, they will be conveyed to the endolysosomes. Few would deny that contract law is filled with default rules, but there has been a great deal of scholarly debate about their purposes and functions. Some American scholars have argued that there are default rules that do not align with most parties’ expectations; indeed, they impose a burden on one or both parties if they are not departed from. Departing from these default rules typically requires one or both parties to share information that they might have otherwise kept to themselves. This article explores a linguistic defect in how Argentine Supreme Court dissents are written. The reader of these dissents has a hard time distinguishing between a majority opinion and a dissenting opinion, because dissents are written “as if” they were deciding the case. The confusion results from the use of performative language in dissents when adherence to reality and a plain-language approach require modal verbs reflecting the language of suggestion. This article explores the question of legal education in micro jurisdictions using the case of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency, positioned geographically, historically and culturally between two larger jurisdictions, France and the UK. It analyses how Jersey’s legal training is pulled towards those large “big neighbours,” rather than focusing on what makes its specificity and attraction.
