The South African Constitution of 1996 has had a significant im-pact on all the branches of South African law, including its succes-sion laws. The Constitution has transformatively reshaped im-portant aspects of South Africa's succession laws over the past two-and-a-half decades. This Article surveys the reshaping of two such aspects critically, namely (i) the extension of spousal inheritance under the Intestate Succession Act of 1987 and the Wills Act of 1953 as well as the extension of parental inheritance under the former statute; and (ii) the limitation of testamentary freedom. The separation of a company from its members, based on legal personality, is recognized as one of the fundamental principles of corporate law. It expresses the legal distinction between the two entities. A consequence of the separateness principle is that members are not liable for the debts of their companies, and companies cannot be held liable for the debts of their members. The concept of the Social-Ecological Model was originally introduced in the 1970s by psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner and designed to theoretically capture the multifaceted influence different personal, social, and environmental factors have on health behaviors and outcomes. Human AP Endonuclease 1 (APE1) is the primary enzyme in the base excision repair (BER) pathway that repairs apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites, the most frequently formed DNA lesions in the genome. Recently, through genome-wide mapping analysis, we have shown that APE1, as well as its post-translationally modified form, acetylated APE1 (AcAPE1), is enriched in the gene regulatory regions. The APE1/AcAPE1-enriched regions also harbor Guanine (G)-rich sequences that fold into DNA secondary structures called G-quadruplexes (G4s). Our lab has demonstrated a strong genome-wide correlation between the occurrence of G4 structures and the binding of APE1 and AcAPE1. However, it is unknown whether …

Omics technologies, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, have been pivotal in our current understanding of development, how developmental defects can lead to cancer, and importantly, our approach to chemotherapeutic treatment for cancer patients. In 2014, ASTM International (ASTM), one of the world's largest international standards developing organizations, published a new test method on glove grip performance. This method was adopted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in some of their specification standards. The method utilized hand torque instead of the pull method previously used by the NFPA to determine the Percent Bare Hand Control Value (%BHCV). The %BHCV, compares torque results of a gloved hand versus a bare hand. Despite increasing incidence, male breast cancer (MBC) remains understudied in almost all aspects of disease management. MBC patients are more likely to be diagnosed with larger tumors, at an advanced stage, and to experience poorer survival than female patients. There is a need to identify modifiable factors that can improve MBC patients’ survival.

This dissertation aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in the refusal of recommended treatments and related survival, by gender, in breast cancer patients enrolled in the National Cancer Database. Protein kinase Cα (PKCα) is a member of the PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, which have been implicated in regulation of many cellular processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and transformation. A large body of evidence from the Black laboratory and others support an anti-proliferative function of PKCα in normal epithelial tissues, including the intestinal mucosa and endometrial epithelium. PKCα is also tumor suppressive in epithelial cancers, such as colorectal cancer (CRC) and endometrial cancer (EC). Patients who are immunosuppressed, such as solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs), are known to have a higher risk of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). This population is at a higher risk of metastasis and worse disease-specific survival, with over 1 million cases and an estimated 3,932 to 8,791 deaths each year in the United States. Large cancer genomic databases have reported on genomic drivers for many cancer subtypes, yet cSCC has not been included. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) allow for the formation of all cell types in the blood and maintain these populations throughout a person’s life. The process of hematopoiesis is regulated through a variety of molecular mechanisms that are either signaled from the cell’s environment (extrinsic) or from within the cell itself (intrinsic). One intrinsic mechanism that regulates hematopoietic cell fate decisions is the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS). The UPS controls protein levels by tagging them with polyubiquitin chains and promoting their degradation through the proteasome. In an attempt to increase the residence time of PSMA-targeted theranostics inside the prostate cancer cells and tumors, we designed and prepared a CPTA-PSMATA resembling PSMA-617 by adding a well-known cysteine protease inhibitor (E-64) to the conjugate. Lysosomal proteases, including cysteine, serine, and aspartic families of hydrolytic enzymes, are expressed in high concentrations in the lysosomes and are responsible for the catabolism of proteins inside the cell [165, 278]. We proposed that after successful internalization of the PSMA-targeted conjugates into the cells, they will be conveyed to the endolysosomes. In this dissertation, I address the question of whether ground, the relation that obtains between entities e1...en and a further entity e when e ontologically depends on, and is metaphysically explained by, e1...en, should be understood causally and, if so, whether this has any substantive implications. I answer both in the affirmative. I argue that ground and causation are similar enough to motivate characterizing ground as a special kind of causation, and that this can be done if we adopt a powers-theoretic account of causation. Few would deny that contract law is filled with default rules, but there has been a great deal of scholarly debate about their purposes and functions. Some American scholars have argued that there are default rules that do not align with most parties’ expectations; indeed, they impose a burden on one or both parties if they are not departed from. This article explores the question of legal education in micro jurisdictions using the case of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency, positioned geographically, historically and culturally between two larger jurisdictions, France and the UK. It analyses how Jersey’s legal training is pulled towards those large “big neighbours,” rather than focusing on what makes its specificity and attraction. Book challenges and bans are more prevalent than ever in the year 2022. The conversations surrounding the challenge of a book are often very stressful for the librarian, teacher, or administrator involved. This project seeks to ease some of that stress by giving the parties involved in conversation a talking frame. These talking frames are based on the norms of civil discourse and make use of sentence stems to guide potentially tense and awkward conversations.

Schools’ overt or explicit practices are a dominant lens through which education researchers and policymakers attempt to understand how schools are racially inequitable. Yet, Lewis and Diamond argue that contemporary racial inequalities are largely sustained through implicit factors, like institutional practices and structural inequalities. Ray’s framework on racialized organizations similarly outlines how our racialized sociopolitical structure becomes embedded in organizations, legitimating and perpetuating the racialized hierarchy. We apply illustrative cluster analysis techniques to rich data on schools, teachers, and students from the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 to find that structural inequities (e.g., student body, sector, average …
