Present study aimed to perform literature review to investigate the current status and potential use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for enhancing the soil plant’s health, plant growth and productivity in sustainable ways. The Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methods was applied according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) on published scientific literature from 2012-2022. Results revealed that genus diversity of PGPR (Bacillus sp., Serratia sp., Streptomyces sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Burkholderia sp.) produce siderophore and phytohormones such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellin (GAs), auxin, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, organic acids, biocontrol agent that …

Impaired proteostasis is associated with normal aging and is accelerated in neurodegeneration. This impairment may lead to the accumulation of protein, which can be toxic to cells and tissue. In a subset of frontotemporal lobar degeneration with tau pathology (FTLD-tau) cases, pathogenic mutations in the microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) gene are sufficient to cause tau accumulation and neurodegeneration. However, the pathogenic events triggered by the expression of the mutant tau protein remain poorly understood. Here, we show that molecular networks associated with lysosomal biogenesis and autophagic function are disrupted in brains from FTLD-tau patients carrying a MAPT p.R406W mutation. We …

Fusion Energy For Peacebuilding: A Trinity Test-Level Critical Juncture, Elias Carayannis, John Draper, Balwant Bhaneja
Fusion Energy For Peacebuilding: A Trinity Test-Level Critical Juncture, Elias Carayannis, John Draper, Balwant Bhaneja
Peace and Conflict Studies
Peacebuilding used to power humanity’s quest for fusion; it still could. This article analyses the enormous implications of a burning plasma fusion breakthrough, for both worsening conflicts and peacebuilding, by applying the nonkilling global political science peacebuilding framework; the quintuple helix technology innovation ecosystem model; and recent path dependence theory. The first burning plasma will be an unprecedented historical event, with the closest parallel being the Trinity Test; we analyze the Test in path dependence terms to compare it with fusion. As with fission, fusion will be weaponized due to its intrinsic benefits. However, the innovations leading to fusion are …
How Can You Call Her A Woman? Male Soldiers’ Views On Women In The Drc Armed Forces, Dostin Lakika, Ingrid Palmary
How Can You Call Her A Woman? Male Soldiers’ Views On Women In The Drc Armed Forces, Dostin Lakika, Ingrid Palmary
Peace and Conflict Studies
There has been a longstanding body of literature on women in the armed forces at least since the 1970s (Segal, 1999). This literature varies considerably in its approach, from feminist work that reflects on the forms of masculinity produced through military and militarization, to work that considers women’s role in the army and attitudes towards women in the army. Furthermore, policy efforts to increase women’s participation in the army (such as UN Security Council Resolution 1325) have explicitly called for the inclusion of women in peace and security efforts. In this paper, we contribute to this literature by assessing how …

Depression Secondary To Isotretinoin – A Case Report, Rohan Karkra, Megha Sadashiv, Kishor M
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Depression is one of the leading causes of morbidity in the world and significantly affects the lives of people suffering from it. The exact cause of depression has not been established and it is believed to be a complex play between various social, biological, environmental, personal factors. A relatively rare but distinct cause includes pharmacological agents.
In this case report, we describe the case of a 17-year-old girl who developed depression with psychotic symptoms on two occasions, both preceded by a history of Isotretinoin use. She was admitted and treated with anti-psychotics and psychotherapy with significant improvement in her mental …

Sizeism--What Multicultural Education & Training Are Missing, Jen Rynes
Counselor Education Capstones
Training in multiculturalism is a major focus in most counselor education graduate programs. These programs seek to graduate competent counselors who aspire to serve all populations. The harsh reality is that many programs fail to acknowledge body diversity and sizeism in these multicultural courses and trainings. There are a multitude of reasons why body diversity needs to be a part of multicultural education and training. The literature reviewed in this paper has a purpose of discussing those reasons, dismantling the many myths associated with fatness, identifying how body size intersects with other diverse identities, and reviewing current multicultural guidelines and …

Vimentin intermediate !laments form part of the cytoskeleton
of mesenchymal cells, but under pathological conditions often
associatedwith in"ammation, vimentin !laments depolymerize as
the result of phosphorylation or citrullination, and vimentin
oligomers are secreted or released into the extracellular environment.
In the extracellular space, vimentin can bind surfaces of cells
and the extracellular matrix, and the interaction between extracellular
vimentin and cells can trigger changes in cellular functions,
such as activation of !broblasts to a !brotic phenotype. The
mechanism by which extracellular vimentin binds external cell
membranes and whether vimentin alone can act as an adhesive
anchor for cells is largely …
Comparative Intellectual Property Protection For Marijuana: United States Vs. The European Union, Jillian Gosser
Comparative Intellectual Property Protection For Marijuana: United States Vs. The European Union, Jillian Gosser
Global Business Law Review
Protecting intellectual property relating to marijuana is a complicated endeavor. The federal ban on marijuana renders trademark protection difficult at best, and patent protection, while available, still rife with complications. In Europe, the laws pose similar challenges in the protection and enforcement of marijuana related intellectual property. This Note presents a comparative law analysis of the various ways marijuana related intellectual property may be protected in the United States and Europe. Different types of intellectual property protection explored include utility patents, design patents, trademarks, plant patents, Plant Variety Protection Act coverage, and Community Plant Variety Act coverage. This Note explores …

Quantifying Carbon Dioxide And Methane Fluxes From Sargassum Strandings On Florida Beaches, James O. Westphalen
Quantifying Carbon Dioxide And Methane Fluxes From Sargassum Strandings On Florida Beaches, James O. Westphalen
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Floating Sargassum is thought to be a sink of blue carbon in that it removes carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and sequesters organic carbon by sinking into the deep ocean or being buried in sediments. However, Sargassum that washes into intertidal ecosystems will eventually decompose, releasing greenhouse gases to the surrounding air, groundwater, and surface coastal seawater. In recent years, Sargassum strandings have increased in the Atlantic Ocean, making our understanding of the fate of beached Sargassum critical for determining how much carbon is sequestered by the seaweed. This study investigated greenhouse gas fluxes of decaying Sargassum …

Untangling The Evolution Of Body-Part Terminology In Pano: Conservative Versus Innovative Traits In Body-Part Lexicalization, Roberto Zariquiey, Javier Vera, Simon J. Greenhill, Pilar Valenzuela, Russell J. Gray, Johann-Mattis List
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research
Although language-family specific traits which do not find direct counterparts outside a given language family are usually ignored in quantitative phylogenetic studies, scholars have made ample use of them in qualitative investigations, revealing their potential for identifying language relationships. An example of such a family specific trait are body-part expressions in Pano languages, which are often lexicalized forms, composed of bound roots (also called body-part prefixes in the literature) and non-productive derivative morphemes (called here body-part formatives). We use various statistical methods to demonstrate that whereas body-part roots are generally conservative, body-part formatives exhibit diverse chronologies and are often the …

Effect Of Education On Self-Reported Health, Mai Le '24
Student Research
Human Capital Theory pointed out health as a possible return to education. The question at the center of this research is if education can improve health. Replicating the work of Goesling (2007) on new data from the 2000-2022 Current Population Survey (CPS), a cross-sectional probit analysis shows a positive relationship between educational level and self-reported health. This relationship is robust and significant across age groups.
“The Ugly Truth”: Examining War Trauma And Therapeutic Storytelling Through The Works Of Tim O’Brien, Meredith Ivy Fedewa
“The Ugly Truth”: Examining War Trauma And Therapeutic Storytelling Through The Works Of Tim O’Brien, Meredith Ivy Fedewa
Masters Theses
Within this work, a close study on the relationship between trauma and storytelling is examined through three of Tim O’Brien’s works: The Things They Carried, Going After Cacciato, and In the Lake of the Woods. Through the application of psychoanalysis, specifically the work of Jacques Lacan, and modern trauma theory, the relationship between individual identity and the traumatizing encounter of the Real is examined through O’Brien’s concepts of Story Truth versus Happening Truth, as well as how those concepts work together to navigate one’s trauma story. Through weaving the aforementioned theory with each text, O’Brien is seen …
Antibiotic Production Of Facultative Anaerobic Bacteria From Soil Isolates, Cierra Paaaina-Daquioag, Debra Kerr
Antibiotic Production Of Facultative Anaerobic Bacteria From Soil Isolates, Cierra Paaaina-Daquioag, Debra Kerr
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
In nature, antibiotics are produced by organisms to deter and possibly communicate with other organisms. The use of antibiotics to treat infections revolutionized medicine, but bacteria and fungal pathogens become resistant due to the overuse of these medications. A potential solution is to search for novel antibiotics produced by soil bacteria. Bacteria gene expression patterns, including antibiotic production, are different under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The objective of this research project was to identify soil bacteria that produce antibiotics that inhibit the growth of benign relatives of the ESKAPE pathogens under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. A secondary objective was to …

Hydraulic Redistribution Under Saline Conditions, Josh Gottlieb
Hydraulic Redistribution Under Saline Conditions, Josh Gottlieb
Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Water scarcity and soil salinity are dual stressors for plants in arid, salt-affected ecosystems. Hydraulic redistribution, a hydraulic adaptation which moves water through plant roots into dry or saline soil regions along potential gradients, aids plant survival in stressful environments. Recent theory regarding hydraulic redistribution proposes limitations on the process within saline soils. This study applies a minimalist resistor-capacitor model of the soil-plant-atmosphere system to the experimental conditions of a 2010 study investigating hydraulic redistribution in a salt affected area. The effectiveness of the model is evaluated, and a sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify key dynamics affecting the moisture …

Pharmacotherapy For Opioid Use Disorder In Mississippi, Amanda Michelle Whitacre
Pharmacotherapy For Opioid Use Disorder In Mississippi, Amanda Michelle Whitacre
Doctoral Projects
The opioid epidemic is affecting Mississippi’s young to middle-aged adult population in a profound way. Pharmacotherapy for opioid use disorder (OUD) is the gold standard treatment. Despite the FDA-approved evidence-based treatment of pharmacotherapy for OUD, rural areas often lack providers available who will initiate and provide maintenance of this life-saving medication. For this doctoral project, a 36-question survey was developed based on a preliminary literature review. The survey was disseminated to advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in the family and psychiatric specialties across Mississippi to assess the barriers to APRNs filling the gap in pharmacotherapy prescribing for OUD. A continuing …

A Subspecies-Level Database Of Amazonian Bird Distributions, With Inferences On Suture Zones And Conservation, Marco Antonio Rego
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Amazonia has the largest and most biodiverse tropical forest on the planet. However, the distributions of its species are still poorly understood, even for well-studied vertebrates such as birds. Available distribution maps for Amazonian birds often lack accuracy in delimiting the area where species occur. Existing distributional information for Amazonian birds is often limited to species-level level taxonomy, even though many Amazonian bird subspecies represent biological species. Here, I investigate the geographic distributions of 4,148 bird taxa (species and subspecies) using museum scientific specimens as the primary source of data. To build the data base I use more than 600,000 …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) causes peripheral vascular disease because of which several blood-borne factors, including vital nutrients fail to reach the affected tissue. Tissue epigenome is sensitive to chronic hyperglycemia and is known to cause pathogenesis of micro- and macrovascular complications. These vascular complications of T2DM may perpetuate the onset of organ dysfunction. The burden of diabetes is primarily because of a wide range of complications of which nonhealing diabetic ulcers represent a major component. Thus, it is imperative that current research help recognize more effective methods for the diagnosis and management of early vascular injuries. This review addresses …

Moral Status And The Oversight Of Research Involving Chimeric Animals, Patricia Marshall, Kaitlynn P. Craig
Faculty Scholarship
The use of nonhuman animals in research has long been a source of bioethical and scientific debate. We consider the oversight and use of nonhuman animals in chimeric research. We conducted interviews with twelve members of embryonic stem cell research oversight committees, nine members of institutional animal care and use committees, and fourteen scientists involved in human–nonhuman-animal chimeric research in different areas of the United States. Interviews addressed animal welfare and conceptual issues associated with moral status and humanization of nonhuman animals that contain human cells. Our findings suggest that concepts of enhanced moral status and consciousness are not very …

Moscow State University (MSU) in Russia does not have an adequate general education curriculum as part of the undergraduate requirements. The curriculum does not cover classical topics such as the exploration of human nature. At the college level, Russian students are not able to change their specialization even as freshmen. The policy recommendations are going to be grounded on the various philosophical understanding of education and its role in our society. MSU should include more open discussion seminars in order to develop crucial virtues of character. At the same time, MSU should implement a general education curriculum, which would keep …
Wearable Sensors For Plants, Nafize Ishtiaque Hossain
Wearable Sensors For Plants, Nafize Ishtiaque Hossain
Electrical Engineering Theses
This thesis reports PlantFit: a research and development project that is intended to develop wearable sensors for plants. Plants are responsible for providing food, fiber, fuel, and fodder to the society. To overcome the problem of a limited land base, a more efficient farming approach needs to be developed, and thus precision farming is required. Precision farming would entail personalized healthcare in plants. When the plant is under any stress, the productivity declines. Plants release phytohormones, also known as early responders, in response to these stressors. The key crop phytohormones that respond to environmental stresses include salicylic acid (SA), indole-3-acetic …

Differential Expression Of Photosynthetic Genes In Cryptophyte Algae (Hemiselmis Cryptochromatica Ccmp 1181), Chastity D. Aguilar
Biology Theses
Cryptophytes are a group of freshwater algae that have acquired photosynthesis through secondary endosymbiosis with a red alga and an unknown eukaryote heterotroph. Cryptophytes possess photosynthetic pigment-protein structures called phycobiliproteins (PBPs). Cryptophyte phycobiliproteins are composed of α and β-protein subunits and four chromophores (bilins). There are nine classes of cryptophyte PBPs that absorb different wavelengths of light based on the type of bilins covalently bound to the protein subunits. Three cryptophyte PBPs are phycoerythrins that give the algae a red appearance and six are phycocyanins that give the algae a blue to green appearance. Hemiselmis cryptochromatica (CCMP 1181) is a …
Novel Patterns For Nucleosome Positioning: From In Vitro To In Vivo, David Andrew Bates
Novel Patterns For Nucleosome Positioning: From In Vitro To In Vivo, David Andrew Bates
Theses and Dissertations
The fundamental unit of chromatin is the nucleosome, which consists of a core of eight proteins wrapped by DNA. This core is composed of four pairs of histone proteins: H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. The DNA wraps around the protein core ~1.7 times, facilitating compaction of DNA length in the cell. Further, the location of nucleosomes makes genomic elements encoded in the DNA, such as promoters or enhancers, accessible or inaccessible to RNA polymerase and transcription factors. Thus, where nucleosomes are located (or positioned), can play a major role in transcription or other cellular processes. Additionally, histone proteins are frequently …
