Species Distribution Models And Climatic Niche Comparisons Provide Clues On The Geographic Origin Of A Spider Invasion In The Americas, Laura Segura‑Hernandez, Gilbert Barrantes, Eduardo Chacon‑Madrigal, Adrián Garcia‑Rodriguez

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Identifying the source population of alien species is important to assess the distribution and potential effects in the invaded area. The araneid spider Cyrtophora citricola is widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and Africa; however, in the last 26 years, it has been reported in several countries across the Americas. To date, the geographic origin of the populations established in the Americas remains unclear, but considering the successful colonization after its recent arrival, assessing climatic similarities between the invaded and native geographic ranges could be useful to address this question. In this study, we used a combination of Species Distribution Models …

Quantitative Assay For Farnesol And The Aromatic Fusel Alcohols From The Fungus Candida Albicans, Cory H. T. Boone, Daniel Gutzmann, Jaxon J. Kramer, Audrey L. Atkin, Kenneth Nickerson Sep 2022

Quantitative Assay For Farnesol And The Aromatic Fusel Alcohols From The Fungus Candida Albicans, Cory H. T. Boone, Daniel Gutzmann, Jaxon J. Kramer, Audrey L. Atkin, Kenneth Nickerson

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The dimorphic fungus Candida albicans is a commensal and opportunistic fungal pathogen of humans. It secretes at least four small lipophilic molecules, farnesol and three aromatic fusel alcohols. Farnesol has been identified as both a quorum sensing molecule (QSM) and a virulence factor. Our gas chromatography (GC)-based assay for these molecules exhibits high throughput, prevention of analyte loss by avoiding filtration and rotary evaporation, simultaneous cell lysis and analyte extraction by ethyl acetate, and the ability to compare whole cultures with their cell pellets and supernatants. Farnesol synthesis and secretion were separable phenomena and pellet:supernatant ratios for farnesol were high, …

Myc is a powerful transcription factor implicated in epigenetic reprogramming, cellular plasticity, and rapid growth as well as tumorigenesis. Cancer in skeletal muscle is extremely rare despite marked and sustained Myc induction during loading-induced hypertrophy. Here, we investigated global, actively transcribed, stable, and myonucleus-specific transcriptomes following an acute hypertrophic stimulus in mouse plantaris. With these datasets, we define global and Myc-specific dynamics at the onset of mechanical overload-induced muscle fiber growth. Data collation across analyses reveals an under-appreciated role for the muscle fiber in extracellular matrix remodeling during adaptation, along with the contribution of mRNA stability to epigenetic-related transcript …

Motivation: Microbiota analyses have important implications for health and science. These analyses make use of 16S/18S rRNA gene sequencing to identify taxa and predict species diversity. However, most available tools for analyzing microbiota data require adept programming skills and in-depth statistical knowledge for proper implementation. While long-read amplicon sequencing can lead to more accurate taxa predictions and is quickly becoming more common, practitioners have no easily accessible tools with which to perform their analyses.

Results: We present MOCHI, a GUI tool for microbiota amplicon sequencing analysis. MOCHI preprocesses sequences, assigns taxonomy, identifies different abundant species and predicts species diversity and …

Mitochondrial quality control prevents accumulation of intramitochondrial-derived reactive oxygen species (mtROS), thereby protecting cells against DNA damage, genome instability, and programmed cell death. However, underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood, particularly in fungal species. Here, we show that Cryptococcus neoformans heat shock factor 3 (CnHsf3) exhibits an atypical function in regulating mtROS independent of the unfolded protein response. CnHsf3 acts in nuclei and mitochondria, and nuclear- and mitochondrial-targeting signals are required for its organelle-specific functions. It represses the expression of genes involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle while promoting expression of genes involved in electron transfer chain. In addition, CnHsf3 responds …

Hippo signaling, an evolutionarily conserved kinase cascade involved in organ size control, plays key roles in various tissue developmental processes, but its role in craniofacial development remains poorly understood. Using the transgenic Wnt1-Cre2 driver, we inactivated the Hippo signaling components Lats1 and Lats2 in the cranial neuroepithelium of mouse embryos and found that the double conditional knockout (DCKO) of Lats1/2 resulted in neural tube and craniofacial defects. Lats1/2 DCKO mutant embryos had microcephaly with delayed and defective neural tube closure. Furthermore, neuroepithelial cell shape and architecture were disrupted within the cranial neural tube in Lats1/2 DCKO mutants. RNA sequencing of …

Beating “Love” To Death: Emotion Junkies, The Unnatural Affectations Of “Loving Earth,” And Other Ghostly Infatuations

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

If the sentiment, or more precisely, an emotion that one identifies as ‘love’ becomes the protagonist of and footnote to almost everything we do, that is, if that thing ‘love’ reigns supreme and is definitive of what most humans do or want, then grinding and packing everything else into the same ‘love’ sausage casing becomes commonplace if only to add provenance to ‘our feelings’ – in order to, unnecessarily perhaps, validate them. When we beat ‘love’ to death (virtual signalling) it is more likely, it seems, that we are in the shadows of its scarcity. In its clamoring we know …

Proximate And Ultimate Perspectives On Romantic Love

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

Romantic love is a phenomenon of immense interest to the general public as well as to scholars in several disciplines. It is known to be present in almost all human societies and has been studied from a number of perspectives. In this integrative review, we bring together what is known about romantic love using Tinbergen’s “four questions” framework originating from evolutionary biology. Under the first question, related to mechanisms, we show that it is caused by social, psychological mate choice, genetic, neural, and endocrine mechanisms. The mechanisms regulating psychopathology, cognitive biases, and animal models provide further insights into the mechanisms …

BACKGROUND: For patients with brain tumors, maximizing the extent of resection while minimizing postoperative neurological morbidity requires accurate preoperative identification of eloquent structures. Recent studies have provided evidence that anatomy may not always predict eloquence. In this study, we directly compare transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) data combined with tractography to traditional anatomic grading criteria for predicting permanent deficits in patients with motor eloquent gliomas.

METHODS: We selected a cohort of 42 glioma patients with perirolandic tumors who underwent preoperative TMS mapping with subsequent resection and intraoperative mapping. We collected clinical outcome data from their chart with the primary outcome being …

Anti-cancer immunity and response to immune therapy is influenced by the metabolic states of the tumours. Immune checkpoint blockade therapy (ICB) is known to involve metabolic adaptation, however, the mechanism is not fully known. Here we show, by metabolic profiling of plasma samples from melanoma-bearing mice undergoing anti-PD1 and anti-CTLA4 combination therapy, that higher levels of purine metabolites, including inosine, mark ICB sensitivity. Metabolic profiles of ICB-treated human cancers confirm the association between inosine levels and ICB sensitivity. In mouse models, inosine supplementation sensitizes tumours to ICB, even if they are intrinsically ICB resistant, by enhancing T cell-mediated cytotoxicity and …

The classification of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemias was last updated in 2016 within a collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO), the Society for Hematopathology, and the European Association for Haematopathology. This collaboration was primarily based on input from a clinical advisory committees (CACs) composed of pathologists, hematologists, oncologists, geneticists, and bioinformaticians from around the world. The recent advances in our understanding of the biology of hematologic malignancies, the experience with the use of the 2016 WHO classification in clinical practice, and the results of clinical trials have indicated the need for further revising and updating the classification. As …

Eigen’S Paradox And The Quasispecies Model In A Non-Archimedean Framework, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article we present a new p -adic generalization of the Eigen–Schuster model where the genomes (sequences) are represented by words written in the alphabet { 0 , 1 , … , p − 1 } , where p is a prime number, with a time variable length. The time evolution of the concentration of a given sequence is controlled by a p -adic evolution equation. The long term behavior of the concentration of a sequence depends on a fitness function f , a mutation measure Q , and an initial concentration distribution. The new model provides essentially two …

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP) is a vital regulator of optimal vitamin D homeostasis and bioavailability. Apart from its well-documented role as a key component in vitamin D dynamic transfer and circulation, it has a myriad of immunoregulatory functions related to innate immunity, which becomes particularly critical in states of increased immunological tolerance including pregnancy. In this regard, VDBP dyshomeostasis is considered to contribute to the development of several fetal, maternal, and neonatal adverse outcomes. However, precise physiological pathways, including the contribution of specific VDBP polymorphisms behind such phenomena, are yet to be fully deciphered. Our aim was to assess …

Applying The Seven Principles Of Learning To Development Communication, Lina Abd El Ghaffar Sep 2022

Applying The Seven Principles Of Learning To Development Communication, Lina Abd El Ghaffar

Theses and Dissertations

Development communication originated as a post-war term meaning “the application of communication strategies and principles in the developing world.”. As time went by, various definitions of development communication emerged, each reflecting its political agenda and interests. A more recent definition states that development communication aims to remove constraints for an increasingly participatory and equal society.

Sustainability and inclusivity are at the heart of effective development. The current development communication paradigms are the top down Dominant paradigm which is criticized for not being inclusive and the bottom up Participatory paradigm which is criticized for not being sustainable.

Based on the Seven …

Comparing The Evidence From Observational Studies And Randomized Controlled Trials For Nonskeletal Health Effects Of Vitamin D, William B. Grant, Barbara J. Boucher, Fatme Al Anouti, Stefan Pilz

All Works

Although observational studies of health outcomes generally suggest beneficial effects with, or following, higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have generally not supported those findings. Here we review results from observational studies and RCTs regarding how vitamin D status affects several nonskeletal health outcomes, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, autoimmune diseases, cancers, cardiovascular disease, COVID-19, major depressive disorder, type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension, all-cause mortality, respiratory tract infections, and pregnancy outcomes. We also consider relevant findings from ecological, Mendelian randomization, and mechanistic studies. Although clear discrepancies exist between findings of observational studies and RCTs on vitamin …

The Planetary Sublime Part Ii Of The Problem Of An Unloving World, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer Sep 2022

The Planetary Sublime Part Ii Of The Problem Of An Unloving World, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

This essay interprets Dipesh Chakrabarty’s The Climate of History in a Planetary Age in light of the European tradition of thought about the sublime. The first half of the essay stages Chakrabarty’s historiography within that tradition focusing on a critical understanding of Kant. Then, the essay considers how the trace of the sublime in Chakrabarty’s approach to planetary history is interpretable as a form of social alienation. That argument draws on the critical theory of Steven Vogel and decolonial critique. Finally, the essay considers the moods of protest as non-alienated responses to the planetary bypassing the coloniality of the sublime.

Patenting Human Genes: Wherein Lies The Balance Between Private Rights And Public Access In India And The United States?, Elizabeth Siew-Kuan Ng

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

This article examines the patentability of human genes by evaluating where the balance should lie between the protection of private rights and public access for the promotion of further innovation and public health. The author investigates this issue by providing a comparative study on the approaches adopted in India and the United States – two highly divergent nations that offer unique contrasts in a comparative analysis of their patent regimes. The outcome of the appraisal discerns a potential convergence in the Indian and US approaches on certain aspects of human gene patent-eligibility. This interesting result reveals that contrary to intuition, …

Understanding The Status Of Important Criteria Air Pollutants And Its Health Effects – A Review, Christeena Varghese, Lingaraju H G, Shankramma Kalikeri

International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences

In India, airborne pollutant is serious, and a growing illness cause of concern, adding considerably to the country's disease burden. Atmospheric effects are generally known to have several harmful health implications. India's air pollution has risen significantly because of population expansion, rising vehicle numbers, fuel usage, inefficient transit networks, poor land use patterns, industrialisation, and most importantly, insufficient environmental legislation. Because air pollution is a major factor, this has an impact on human health. People gradually understood that contaminated outdoor air had detrimental consequences on human health. Hypercholesterolemia, breathing problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma are all connected …

A “Kind Of Impiety”: Deforestation, Sustainability, And Self In The Works Of Samuel Richardson And Yuan Mei, Samara Cahill

Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy & the Arts

[From first paragraph] In line with scholarship by Timothy Clark, Erin Drew and John Sitter, David Fairer, and Tom Keymer, I argue that it is a distortion of eighteenth-century literature to identify the Romantic period as the origin of modern ecological consciousness. Indeed, according to Drew and Sitter, the dismissive characterization of the eighteenth century in current ecocritical scholarship is “puzzling” because much of the literature of that period “not only deals with the natural world but does so in ways arguably more ecocentric and less egocentric in orientation than much Romantic writing” (227).
