Effect Of Pre-Carbonization Temperature On The Porous Structure And Electrochemical Properties Of Activated Carbon Fibers Derived From Kapok For Supercapacitor Applications, Nu Myat Thazin, Nattapat Chaiammart, Myo Myo Thu, Gasidit Panomsuwan

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were successfully synthesized from kapok via a two-step process: (i) pre-carbonization and (ii) chemical activation. The pre-carbonization temperature was varied at 300℃, 400℃, and 500℃. The mixing ratio of the pre-carbonized product and potassium hydroxide (KOH) was 3:1, while the activation temperature was 800℃. The effect of pre-carbonization temperature on the morphology, surface area and porosity, chemical functional group, and phase structure of ACFs was investigated and discussed. The characterization results showed that ACFs exhibited an amorphous carbon structure with a hollow fiber shape resembling the kapok. The specific surface area decreased from 487 m2×g-1 to …

Elastic Properties Of Boro-Tellurite Glasses Doped With Europium Oxide, Chinnappareddy Devaraja, G. V. Jagadeesha Gowda, Bheemaiah Eraiah, G. K. Narasihma Murthy

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The glass series of xEu2O3-5PbO-25TeO2-(70-x) B2O3, where x=0.1 mol% to 0.6 mol% were prepared by employing the conventional melt quenching method. The non-crystallinity of prepared BTE glasses was examined by the X-ray diffraction method. The very important mechanical properties such as elastic moduli, Debye temperature, Poisson’s ratio, fractional bond connectivity, softening temperature, acoustic impedance, and the thermal expansion coefficient of the BTE glasses have been studied by measuring ultrasonic velocity. The experimental results indicate that the calculated parameters strongly depend on increasing Eu2O3 concentration. The elastic moduli of the prepared samples were found to decrease with Eu2O3 concentration and this …

A Unified Theory Of Clean Water Act Jurisdiction, Robert W. Adler Jan 2022

A Unified Theory Of Clean Water Act Jurisdiction, Robert W. Adler

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

As it reaches its half century mark, the modern version of the federal Clean Water Act (CWA) remains a definitional quagmire. The U.S. Supreme Court, lower courts, and the two federal agencies charged with implementing the law have struggled to interpret its scope ever since its 1972 enactment. As a result, we still lack clarity regarding the most basic questions about the law’s reach. That causes massive uncertainty for regulated businesses and landowners, the federal and state agencies that implement the law, and members of the public Congress intended to protect. A unified interpretive approach focuses on the statutory text …

Stealing Organs?, Benjamin J. Mcmichael Jan 2022

Stealing Organs?, Benjamin J. Mcmichael

Articles

Every nine minutes, a new person joins a waitlist for an organ transplant, and every day, seventeen people die waiting for an organ that will never come. Because the need for organ transplants far outstrips the number of available organs, the policies and rules governing organ allocation in the United States are critically important and highly contentious. Recently, proponents of a new allocation system one focused more on sharing organs across the nation instead of allocating organs primarily to local transplant candidates have gained ground. Bolstered by two separate lawsuits in the past five years, advocates of greater national sharing …

Carli Creek Regional Water Quality Project: Assessing Water Quality Improvement At An Urban Stormwater Constructed Wetland, Christopher L. Desiderati Jan 2022

Carli Creek Regional Water Quality Project: Assessing Water Quality Improvement At An Urban Stormwater Constructed Wetland, Christopher L. Desiderati

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Stormwater management is an ongoing challenge in the United States and the world at-large. As state and municipal agencies grapple with conflicting interests like encouraging land development, complying with permits to control stormwater discharges, “urban stream syndrome” effects, and charges to steward natural resources for the long-term, some agencies may turn to constructed wetlands (CWs) as aesthetically pleasing and functional natural analogs for attenuating pollution delivered by stormwater runoff to rivers and streams. Constructed wetlands retain pollutants via common physical, physicochemical, and biological principles such as settling, adsorption, or plant and algae uptake. The efficacy of constructed wetlands for pollutant …

“Boys Will Be Boys”: Antithetical Boyhood In Claudia Rankine’S Citizen, Madilyn Abbe Jan 2022

“Boys Will Be Boys”: Antithetical Boyhood In Claudia Rankine’S Citizen, Madilyn Abbe

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

This paper explores Claudia Rankine’s work Citizen: An American Lyric and how the text applies boyhood and manhood differently to white and black males. The text subverts these terms’ straightforward relationship with actual age, instead recognizing them as reverse age categorizations. While these contradictory applications minimize black men through infantilization and expedite the maturation of black children, these same converse categorizations excuse the violence of white men. Through this distinction, Citizen exposes childhood as a subjective categorization to benefit white power. To address the resulting self-fragmentation for African American males, I maintain that the text proffers storytelling as symbolic mothering …

Disability In An American Indian Community : Prevalence, Distribution, And The Role Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Thoin Farzana Begum

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Akwesasne reservation along the St. Lawrence River has experienced significant exposure to several persistent organic pollutants due to rapid industrialization. The Aluminum Company of America, General Motors, and Reynolds Metals operated aluminum foundries that used polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as hydraulic fluids, which contaminated the community environment, the soil, air and water, and community food sources with PCBs. We administered the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule II (WHODAS II) to 119 Akwesasne Mohawk adults residing along the St. Lawrence River in New York. We used exploratory factor analysis to summarize the 36- items comprising the WHODAS II. The 7 …

Fluorescent Labelling Of Ribosomal Rna In Live Mammalian Cells, Amir Agharezaee Jan 2022

Fluorescent Labelling Of Ribosomal Rna In Live Mammalian Cells, Amir Agharezaee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This thesis describes a bio-orthogonal chemistry-based approach for new methods of fluorescence labelling of RNA in live HeLa cells via an IEDDA reaction of TCO with tetrazine. The key step of the approach is synthesis of two nucleobase analogues which were modified with TCO and a masked 5′-phosphate group using aryl phosphonamidite chemistry. Synthesis of tubercidin and uridine analogues were considered in this investigation for incorporation into RNA in live HeLa cells. Synthetic approach was successful at installing the handle containing TCO to tubercidin and uridine to make compounds 12 and 21 respectively (the synthesis of both of which are …

Radical Trachelectomy For Invasive Cervical Cancer : A Pathway To Fertility For Some, But Not Without Repercussions, Erica Jamro-Comer Jan 2022

Radical Trachelectomy For Invasive Cervical Cancer : A Pathway To Fertility For Some, But Not Without Repercussions, Erica Jamro-Comer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

BackgroundRadical trachelectomy (RT) is a surgical procedure that offers a substantial benefit to women diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer: fertility preservation. However, as a newer surgical option, there are still many unknowns about the characteristics and outcomes of women who undergo this procedure after a cervical cancer diagnosis. Initial research in this area indicates that some disparities exist in who has the surgery versus the standard radical hysterectomy procedure; however, these are not fully understood and characterized. Furthermore, little is known about how women plan their families and how their high-risk pregnancies are managed in the absence of a standard …

Educational Materials And Image Induction Increase Treatment Credibility, Zi Ling Fiona Low Jan 2022

Educational Materials And Image Induction Increase Treatment Credibility, Zi Ling Fiona Low

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Patient-perceived treatment credibility is linked to important outcome measures including symptom reduction, therapeutic alliance, patient satisfaction, and attrition rates. However, few studies have tested strategies to enhance treatment credibility. The present study investigates the effect of brief, written educational materials and the use of an image induction prime on perceptions of credibility for cognitive behavioral therapy and psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression. Participants (N = 493) rated the perceived credibility of depression treatments before and after reading brief educational materials. Half of the participants were asked an image induction question priming the construct of open-mindedness. Results indicate that brief educational materials …

Institutionalized Normative Heterosexuality : The Case Of Sexual Fluidity, Nicole Lamarre Jan 2022

Institutionalized Normative Heterosexuality : The Case Of Sexual Fluidity, Nicole Lamarre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Since Alfred Kinsey’s early exploration of sexual behaviors, identities, and desires, there has been a proliferation of studies on what is generally regarded today as sexual fluidity. Inquiry into sexual histories that are neither wholly heterosexual nor homosexual (or even bisexual) has been incredibly well documented by this time. Generally, theories about sexual fluidity have taken one of two positions. The first camp interprets sexual variance as a sign of changing times and crumbling sexual and gender binaries. The second group of theorists postulate that sexual fluidity is neither new nor a particularly positive or liberating social trend. Instead of …

Examining The Potential Of Epigenetic Age To Mediate The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Locus Of Control Using The Alspac Cohort, Christopher Reddy Jan 2022

Examining The Potential Of Epigenetic Age To Mediate The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Locus Of Control Using The Alspac Cohort, Christopher Reddy

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are negative events and environments (e.g., poverty) that occur during childhood and are known to undermine health and wellbeing. Adverse childhood experiences are related to cognitive outcomes in populations of children. A specific area of cognition associated with ACEs is locus of control (LoC). While the association between ACEs and LoC is clear, what is not well understood is how—that is, through what mechanism—ACEs influence LoC. The purpose of this research was to evaluate epigenetic age as a potential mechanism connecting ACEs with LoC. To address this hypothesis, a mediation model was evaluated using the Accessible …

X Ray Phase And Coherent Scatter Imaging Measurements, Mahboob Ur Rehman Jan 2022

X Ray Phase And Coherent Scatter Imaging Measurements, Mahboob Ur Rehman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In conventional radiography, anatomical information of the patients can be obtained, distinguishing different tissue types, e.g. bone and soft tissue. However, it is difficult to obtain appreciable contrast between two different types of soft tissues. Instead, coherent x-ray scattering can be utilized to obtain images which can differentiate between normal and cancerous cells of breast. An x-ray system using a conventional source and simple slot apertures was tested. Materials with scatter signatures that mimic breast cancer were buried in layers of fat of increasing thickness and imaged. The result showed that the contrast and signal to noise ratio (SNR) remained …

Inhibition Of Lysine Acetyltransferases Kat 3a/3b And Its Effect On Poliovirus Proliferation, Eduards Norkvests Jan 2022

Inhibition Of Lysine Acetyltransferases Kat 3a/3b And Its Effect On Poliovirus Proliferation, Eduards Norkvests

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Ribosomes have been traditionally viewed as invariable machinery, but in recent years more and more evidence for their heterogeneity has emerged. Core ribosomal proteins, ribosomal-associated proteins, and post-translational modifications all contribute to the variations found within these crucial subcellular components. In our research, we focused on lysine acetylation – a post translational modification found on many ribosomal proteins. We used a chemical inhibitor of acetyltransferases KAT 3A and KAT 3B to observe the effect that inhibiting acetylation may have in the context of translation. By using poliovirus to shut off conventional cellular translation, we were able to look at a narrow …

Salivary Gland Stromal Heterogeneity And Epithelial Controls, Nicholas L. Moskwa Jan 2022

Salivary Gland Stromal Heterogeneity And Epithelial Controls, Nicholas L. Moskwa

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Organogenesis is the process organs go through where cellular communications coordinate all a developing organ needs. What organs need are more cells, in the right place, doing the right job. In the salivary gland, we know that stromal cells are important for organogenesis and that they coordinate the epithelium’s form and functions. However, specific stromal contributions have focused on epithelial quantity and placement. There is less information about how the stroma directs the epithelium towards certain functions. Here we used organoids as a model for understanding what stromal signaling directs epithelial cell fate. We found that stromal cell state is …

A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Fairness Issues In Algorithmic Policing Systems, Emmanuel Sebastian Udoh Jan 2022

A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Fairness Issues In Algorithmic Policing Systems, Emmanuel Sebastian Udoh

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Algorithmic governance (AG) systems aim to utilize machine learning (ML) in the form of mathematical modelling and predictive analytics to achieve greater efficiency and accuracy, effect equal treatment and eliminate bias. In its application to policing, algorithmic policing (AP) or predictive policing applies tree-based risk training algorithms on criminal complaint data to predict where and when the next crime is likely to occur, and who the likeliest perpetrators and victims are. Thus, AP preemptively determines where, how, and when to deploy police resources. However, as more and more cities adopt AP, there are fears that AP may be reinforcing age-long …

Photopolymers : Environmentally Benign Technology For A Variety Of Industries, Tatyana Tarasevich

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Photopolymerization is a well-known process with applications in a variety of industries. Photopolymers are formed by a reaction of monomers or oligomers, photoinitiators and in some cases crosslinkers. Upon irradiation with UV or visible light, monomers undergo conformational change to form polymers via a photochemical process. Several photopolymerization types will be discussed in this thesis. End products of photopolymerizations included epoxies, inks, coatings, photoresists, etc.

Neural Correlates And Neuroanatomy Of Juvenile And Adult Contextual Fear Memory Retention, Natalie Odynocki Jan 2022

Neural Correlates And Neuroanatomy Of Juvenile And Adult Contextual Fear Memory Retention, Natalie Odynocki

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

AbstractFear is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that allows an organism to discern potential harm and act accordingly by engaging in defensive behaviors. While fear is an adaptive response, dysregulation of fear by means of a traumatic event can lead to psychiatric conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Animal research using rodents in Pavlovian context fear conditioning experiments allows for the ability to study the underlying neural circuitry of threat-appropriate and aberrant fear learning and memory that may contribute to PTSD. However, despite reports that women are more than two times more likely to develop PTSD compared to men, the …

Evaluation Of Aquatic Plant Survey Methods For Efficacy In Invasive Species Detection, Izaac Cooper Jan 2022

Evaluation Of Aquatic Plant Survey Methods For Efficacy In Invasive Species Detection, Izaac Cooper

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Aquatic invasive plants can often be ecologically devastating to ecosystems where they are introduced. This devastation has been widely apparent in the United States, including many locations in New York State over many decades, following anthropogenic transport of species from their native ranges. Due to the difficulty involved in eradicating these plants once they have become fully established, there is keen interest in strategies for early detection to assist with prevention and monitoring to mitigate future management costs. Invasive species detection research aims to find methods for detecting new invaders more effectively. I evaluated three detection methods for their effectiveness …

Mechanisms By Which Protective Human Outer Surface Protein A Antibodies Block Transmission Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Amber M. Frye Jan 2022

Mechanisms By Which Protective Human Outer Surface Protein A Antibodies Block Transmission Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Amber M. Frye

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi) is the causative agent of Lyme disease in the United States and Europe, which remains a major threat to public health. While currently no human Lyme disease vaccine is available, a previously licensed OspA-based vaccine was shown to effectively prevent transmission of B. burgdorferi from ticks to mammalian hosts. Concerning the vaccines mechanism of action, OspA antibodies enter the bloodmeal of a feeding tick and engage with B. burgdorferi producing OspA on their outer surface in a manner that impairs migration of the spirochete to the host; however exact antibody-spirochete interaction is unknown, despite the importance …

Causal Exclusion And Free Will Arguments, Nicholas Jacobson Jan 2022

Causal Exclusion And Free Will Arguments, Nicholas Jacobson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

ABSTRACTIn my dissertation, I defend a compatibilist conception of free will against a variety of arguments against compatibilism, and free will more generally. In the process of defending compatibilist free will against these arguments, I will be fleshing out some details of what I think free will is. Along the way, I will be developing and defending some views on related concepts, such as the concept of control. An important theme I will be revisiting throughout is that these arguments against compatibilist free will assume certain things about causation, and particularly how different kinds of phenomena causally compete with each …

The Vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a specialized olfactory sensory organ located in the ventral region of the nasal cavity in rodents. The vomeronasal epithelium (VNE) of rodents is composed of 2 major types of vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs): 1) VSNs distributed in the apical VNE regions that express vomeronasal type-1 receptors (V1Rs) and the G protein subunit Gi2, and 2) VSNs in the basal territories of the VNE that express vomeronasal type-2 receptors (V2Rs) and the G subunit Go. Besides these two neuronal types, VNE also accommodate a third non-neuronal cell type called Sustentacular cells that lie anatomically above apical …

Ab42 Alters Glutamatergic Transmission In The Ca1 Region Of The Mouse Hippocampus, Patrick Harry Wehrle Jan 2022

Ab42 Alters Glutamatergic Transmission In The Ca1 Region Of The Mouse Hippocampus, Patrick Harry Wehrle

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting 4.5 million people in the US, a number expected to increase 3-fold over the next 30 years. One of the hallmarks of AD is the extracellular accumulation of the protein Aß₄₂ throughout in the brain, particularly in limbic structures like the temporal cortex and hippocampus, key regions for learning and memory. Currently available animal models for AD aim to reproduce key genetic traits of the familial variant of the disease, but >90% of AD patients are affected by idiopathic AD. To overcome this potential limitation, we use a different approach to study …
