Characterization Of Porcine Respiratory Epithelial Cells And Their Innate Immune Responses To Bacterial And Viral Ligands, Yam Prasad Gautam Jan 2022

Characterization Of Porcine Respiratory Epithelial Cells And Their Innate Immune Responses To Bacterial And Viral Ligands, Yam Prasad Gautam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In response to a pathogenic attack, the host produces a series of defense mechanisms through various intracellular signaling pathways. The byproduct of these signaling pathways helps tackle the invading pathogen and protects the body from getting into a diseased state. This system is called the immune system. The immune system can be divided into two branches namely the innate immune system and adaptive immune system. The groups of immune cells that provide protection regardless of the pathogen specificity constitute the innate immune system. The system that acts according to the pathogen specificity is called the adaptive immune response. The production …

Emerging Respiratory Viral Pathogens, April Nelsen Jan 2022

Emerging Respiratory Viral Pathogens, April Nelsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Respiratory disease is arguably the most important health concern for the production animal industry [1-3]. Respiratory problems accounted for the highest mortality both in the swine and beef industries [1, 4]. Respiratory pathogens remain the most vital for swine and bovine research and disease monitoring [2, 5-7]. As pathogens, in particular viral pathogens, mutate, novel disease-causing viruses emerge, and there becomes an increasing concern and need for identification with control perimeters. One frequently identified disease syndrome is Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (PRDC). PRDC is characterized by pneumonia of mixed respiratory infections with contributions from the environment and management practices. The …

Systemic Risk Of Contract, Tal Kastner Jan 2022

Systemic Risk Of Contract, Tal Kastner

Scholarly Works

Complexity and uncertainty define our world, now more than ever. Scholars and practitioners have celebrated modular contract design as an especially effective tool to manage these challenges. Modularity divides complex structures into relatively discrete, independent components with simple connections. The benefits of this fundamental drafting approach are intuitive. Lawyers divide contracts into sections and provisions to make them easier to understand and reduce uncertainty. Dealmakers constructing complex transactions use portable agreements as building blocks to reduce drafting costs and enable innovation. Little attention, however, has been paid to the risks introduced by modularity in contracts. This Article demonstrates how this …

Distributed Governance Of Medical Ai, W. Nicholson Price Ii Jan 2022

Distributed Governance Of Medical Ai, W. Nicholson Price Ii

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to democratize expertise in medicine, bring expertise previously limited to specialists to a variety of health-care settings. But AI can easily falter, and making sure that AI works well across that variety of settings is a challenging task. Centralized governance, such as review by the Food and Drug Administration, can only do so much, since system performance will depend on the particular health-care setting and how the AI system is integrated into setting-specific clinical workflows. This Essay presents the need for distributed governance, where some oversight tasks are undertaken in localized settings. It points …

Microsatellite Based Genetic Diversity Of Mediterranean Fruit Fly(Ceratitis Capitata, Diptera: Tephritidae) Populations From Southwest Turkey, Abuzer Güler, Vatan Taşkin, Belgi̇n Göçmen Taşkin, Ersi̇n Doğaç

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Various pests cause economic losses in some agricultural products, especially in citrus fruits, which are grown in many countries and have a very important role in consumption and export. The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Wied. (Diptera: Tephritidae), which spreads throughout the Mediterranean basin, Europe, the Middle East, Central, and South America, and Australia, is considered the most destructive pest in the world. Turkey is an important part of the Eastern Mediterranean basin and, maybe plays a role in the colonization of this pest. This polyphagous species causes huge economic losses by negatively affecting yield and quality in many countries. …

Comparative Diversity Of Heteroptera (Hemiptera) In Fruit Orchards, Gülay Kaçar, Ahmet Dursun

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Among phytophagous insects, the Heteroptera (Hemiptera), true bugs, are economically important because of damage crops by sucking plant organs and by transmitting plant pathogens. The diversity and distribution of Heteroptera species associated with fruits were investigated in hazelnut, cherry, and apple orchards in the crop season of Bolu and Düzce provinces from May 2015 to October 2016. The species were collected with a Steiner funnel from three fruit varieties from two provinces and for each area at different vegetation in the western Black Sea Region. The highest number of sucking bug species and the greatest diversity occurred on hazelnut. A …

Relating The Makerspace Movement To Diy Adaptive Equipment In An Online Intervention Course For Adults With Physical Disabilities, Rose Mcandrew, Amanda L. Wilson

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Many occupational therapy programs use hybrid instruction methods that include virtual learning. To ensure active learning techniques, instructors must alter and adapt traditional instruction methods to the virtual environment. This article explores the use of a virtual Makerspace to create adaptive equipment used throughout online intervention course experiences. Thirty-seven first year occupational therapy students participated in an exclusively online, synchronous course focusing on interventions for adults with physical disabilities. A Makerspace was created to allow students to have access to adaptive equipment (AE) and teach students how to fabricate low-cost AE for future clients. During class, guided instruction was provided …

Occupation-Centered Anatomy And Applied Biomechanics Courses: Design And Outcomes, Rose Mcandrew, Vicki K. Kaskutas Jan 2022

Occupation-Centered Anatomy And Applied Biomechanics Courses: Design And Outcomes, Rose Mcandrew, Vicki K. Kaskutas

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupation-centered course design allows occupational therapy (OT) educators to differentiate ourselves from other professions while communicating the distinct value of occupation to our students. While there have been numerous calls to action for centering occupation in the OT classroom and proposed models to approach course design, there is limited literature on occupation-centered course design in specific courses, notably foundational science courses like anatomy and applied biomechanics. In this study, we outline our course design process in two courses taught concurrently, as well as our prospective study to determine if an occupation-centered course design allowed students to meet objectives and the …

Teaching Environmental Law After Trump, Doug Williams Jan 2022

Teaching Environmental Law After Trump, Doug Williams

Saint Louis University Law Journal

This Article addresses some of the challenges in teaching environmental law after the administration of President Donald Trump. The Trump Administration mounted a relentless, aggressive, and largely deregulatory overhaul of the nation’s major environmental regulatory efforts, particularly the efforts of the prior Obama Administration. Many of these efforts by the Trump Administration have been challenged in court, some successfully, while others have been reversed or are in the process of reversal by the administration of President Joseph Biden. For teachers of environmental law, these actions present opportunities to demonstrate how regulatory agencies (under the direction of presidents), rather than Congress, …

The Crt Of Black Lives Matter, Angela Onwuachi-Willig Jan 2022

The Crt Of Black Lives Matter, Angela Onwuachi-Willig

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Critical Race Theory (“CRT”), or at least its principles, stands at the core of most prominent social movements of today—from the resurgence of the #MeToo Movement, which was founded by a Black woman, Tarana Burke, to the Black Lives Matter Movement, which was founded by three Black women: Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza, and Patrisse Cullors. In fact, Critical Race Theorists have long defined CRT itself as a movement, one that has not only provided theoretical interventions regarding the relationship between race, racism, power, and the law, but that has also encouraged and, in fact, inspired and guided social movements. This …

Signature Of Multilateral Treaties: Still Meaningful In The Era Of Transnational Law?, Bantekas, Ilias Jan 2022

Signature Of Multilateral Treaties: Still Meaningful In The Era Of Transnational Law?, Bantekas, Ilias

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

The function of signing multilateral treaties has always been perceived as a sine qua non element of inter-state agreements. Its evolution has witnessed several useful variations, such as definitive signatures, the ‘all states formula’, as well as the enhanced role of treaty depositaries with respect to the effect of signatures. The article argues that despite signature requirements in all multilateral treaties there is a clear trend towards alternative forms of agreement, whether between states or between states and non-state actors. The rise in the power of non-state actors has given rise to simplified forms of agreement where formalities, including treaty-type …

Regulating International Commercial Surrogacy: A Balance Of Harms And Benefits, Sophia Shepherd Jan 2022

Regulating International Commercial Surrogacy: A Balance Of Harms And Benefits, Sophia Shepherd

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

International surrogacy can produce great joy, as well-paid surrogates help produce healthy children for caring parents. However, many current cross-border surrogacy arrangements occur under conflicting citizenship laws, which can leave surrogate-born children stateless and their intended parents fighting for parental rights. In addition, without sufficient regulation, international surrogacy can lead to abuses, including exploitation of surrogate mothers and abandonment of surrogate-born children. At the other extreme, excessive regulation, including prohibition, can also cause great harm as surrogates and intended parents are denied surrogacy’s benefits. Moreover, inadequate regulation can quickly lead to prohibition, as abuses cause a country to flip from …

Species-Specific Interactions In Avian–Bryophyte Dispersal Networks, Matthew Chmielewski, Sarah Eppley Jan 2022

Species-Specific Interactions In Avian–Bryophyte Dispersal Networks, Matthew Chmielewski, Sarah Eppley

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies from seed plants have shown that animal dispersal fundamentally alters the success of plant dispersal, shaping community composition through time. Our understanding of this phenomenon in spore plants is comparatively limited. Though little is known about species-specific dispersal relationships between passerine birds and bryophytes, birds are particularly attractive as a potential bryophyte dispersal vector given their highly vagile nature as well as their association with bryophytes when foraging and building nests. We captured birds in Gifford Pinchot National Forest to sample their legs and tails for bryophyte propagules. We found 24 bryophyte species across 34 bird species. We examined …

Phylogenetics And Genetic Variation Of Heligmosomoides Thomomyos In Western Pocket Gophers (Thomomys Spp.), Malorri R. Hughes, Alexandra A. Gibson, Emily R. Wolfe, Cecily D. Bronson, Deborah A. Duffield Jan 2022

Phylogenetics And Genetic Variation Of Heligmosomoides Thomomyos In Western Pocket Gophers (Thomomys Spp.), Malorri R. Hughes, Alexandra A. Gibson, Emily R. Wolfe, Cecily D. Bronson, Deborah A. Duffield

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The host specificities and systematics of North American Heligmosomoides species remain particularly uncertain. The primary aim of this study was to verify that a species described previously based only on morphology, H. thomomyos, from pocket gopher (Rodentia: Geomyidae) hosts in Oregon represented a monophyletic lineage. In order to address this aspect, as well as to further understand relationships and geographic patterns, we carried out phylogenetic, genetic diversity, and population dynamic analyses using partial 18S rRNA and COI mtDNA sequences of Heligmosomoides specimens. Phylogenetic analyses suggested that there are likely multiple Heligmosomoides species present in these hosts. This was supported by …

Spatio-Temporal Movement Patterns Of Sub-Adult Adfluvial Bull Trout, Aimee Taylor Jan 2022

Spatio-Temporal Movement Patterns Of Sub-Adult Adfluvial Bull Trout, Aimee Taylor

All Master's Theses

Bull Trout in the Yakima River basin of Washington are primarily adfluvial, often using managed lakes as habitat. Kachess Lake, composed of Big and Little Kachess Lakes, is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) for water storage. BOR plans to build a structure that can withdraw an additional 200,000 acre-feet of water in drought years, which would disconnect the two basins for multiple years. This study examined the spatio-temporal movement of sub-adult Bull Trout in Kachess Lake to understand distribution patterns and the effects of environmental variables. We sought to answer 1) does time (week of the year), diel …

Genome Assembly Of The Chemosynthetic Endosymbiont Of The Hydrothermal Vent Snail Alviniconcha Adamantis From The Mariana Arc, Corrina Breusing, Nathan Hagen Klobusnik, Michelle A. Hauer, Roxanne A. Beinart Jan 2022

Genome Assembly Of The Chemosynthetic Endosymbiont Of The Hydrothermal Vent Snail Alviniconcha Adamantis From The Mariana Arc, Corrina Breusing, Nathan Hagen Klobusnik, Michelle A. Hauer, Roxanne A. Beinart

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Chemosynthetic animal-microbe symbioses sustain hydrothermal vent communities in the global deep sea. In the Indo-Pacific Ocean, hydrothermal ecosystems are often dominated by gastropod species of the genus Alviniconcha, which live in association with chemosynthetic Gammaproteobacteria or Campylobacteria. While the symbiont genomes of most extant Alviniconcha species have been sequenced, no genome information is currently available for the gammaproteobacterial endosymbiont of Alviniconcha adamantis—a comparatively shallow living species that is thought to be the ancestor to all other present Alviniconcha lineages. Here, we report the first genome sequence for the symbiont of A. adamantis from the Chamorro Seamount at the …

Effects Of Buried Wood On The Development Of Populus Tremuloides On Various Oil Sands Reclamation Soils, Kaitlyn E. Trepanier, Laura Manchola-Rojas, Bradley D. Pinno Jan 2022

Effects Of Buried Wood On The Development Of Populus Tremuloides On Various Oil Sands Reclamation Soils, Kaitlyn E. Trepanier, Laura Manchola-Rojas, Bradley D. Pinno

Aspen Bibliography

Buried wood is an important but understudied component of reclamation soils. We examined the impacts of buried wood amounts and species on the growth of the common reclamation tree species trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides). In a greenhouse study, aspen seedlings were planted into four soil types, upland derived fine forest floor-mineral mix (fFFMM), coarse forest floor-mineral mix (cFFMM), and lowland derived peat and peat-mineral mix (PMM), that were mixed with either aspen or pine wood shavings at four concentrations (0%, 10%, 20% and 50% of total volume). Height and diameter growth, chlorophyll concentration, and leaf and stem biomass were measured. …

High-Sugar Adapted Drosophila Melanogaster Display Differences In Feeding Behavior, Melina Brunelli Jan 2022

High-Sugar Adapted Drosophila Melanogaster Display Differences In Feeding Behavior, Melina Brunelli

Research Days Posters 2022

Overnutrition due to chronic high-sugar (HS) feeding has been shown to reduce lifespan and elicit type II diabetes-like pathophysiology phenotypes in Drosophila melanogaster. We are using an experimental evolution approach in large, outbred Drosophila populations using a HS diet as the selective pressure. This has produced rapid phenotypic adaptation including a significant increase in survival for selected flies on the HS diet. One mechanism by which flies might reduce the effects of a HS diet would be to reduce consumption. Thus, we hypothesized that there would be differences in feeding behavior between control and adapted populations. Four control and four …

Variational Data Assimilation For Two Interface Problems, Xuejian Li Jan 2022

Variational Data Assimilation For Two Interface Problems, Xuejian Li

Doctoral Dissertations

“Variational data assimilation (VDA) is a process that uses optimization techniques to determine an initial condition of a dynamical system such that its evolution best fits the observed data. In this dissertation, we develop and analyze the variational data assimilation method with finite element discretization for two interface problems, including the Parabolic Interface equation and the Stokes-Darcy equation with the Beavers-Joseph interface condition. By using Tikhonov regularization and formulating the VDA into an optimization problem, we establish the existence, uniqueness and stability of the optimal solution for each concerned case. Based on weak formulations of the Parabolic Interface equation and …

Dental Health And Self-Reported Childhood Socioeconomic Status In The William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection, Lydia Blizzard, Haley Horbaly Jan 2022

Dental Health And Self-Reported Childhood Socioeconomic Status In The William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection, Lydia Blizzard, Haley Horbaly

Research Days Posters 2022

Research on health disparities in modern populations has established that an individual’s socioeconomic status (SES) determines their participation in dental services, with lower SES groups exhibiting reduced engagement in such services. While this association between SES and health care is established for living populations, it is unknown whether this pattern is observable in a skeletal population. This study assesses whether this trend is evident in the dentition of 186 randomly selected donors in Bass Donated Skeletal Collection (WMB). Antemortem documents include self-reported childhood SES, which were scored on a scale of one (low income) to four (high income). Individuals were …

Vision In Virginia Woolfe's To The Lighthouse, Sydney Werner Jan 2022

Vision In Virginia Woolfe's To The Lighthouse, Sydney Werner

Research Days Posters 2022

In their article, "The Eye, The Mind & the Spirit: Why ‘the Look of Things’ Held a ‘Great Power’ Over Virginia Woolf," author Michael R. Schrimper creates an argument surrounding the idea of Virginia Woolf being "fixated on vision."Schrimper bifurcates "vision" between two poles: "the actual act of seeing," and "the concentrated observation of objects and surroundings” (33). They go on to detail how that vision manifests itself in terms of active "seeing" and being "seen.". "Seeing" and "being seen" splits the act of perception into a straightforward logic of subject/object; either/or; active/passive. Woolf is perhaps arguing "seeing" cannot be …

Not A One Night Review: How Sexual Hookups Have Changed Over The Past 10 Years: A Review, Emily Presutti, Juan Riestra, Coral Nizen-Jacobellis, Ilana Plotkin, Danielle Kinches

Research Days Posters 2022

In 2012 Garcia et al. reviewed the existing hookup literature and concluded that hookups were an engrained behavior driven by both biological factors as well as ever-changing social scripts (Garcia et al 2012). Ten years have passed by and there have been substantial cultural changes, there have been shifts in attitudes about sexual orientation to gender roles. This current work is focused on a 10-year follow-up on how hookup research has changed. The term “hooking up” refers to uncommitted sexual encounters, which can include a range of sexual activities such as kissing, oral sex, and penetrative intercourse. The previous review …
